Saint Augustine’s University was chartered as Saint Augustine Normal School and Collegiate Institute on July 19, 1867, by the Reverend J. Brinton Smith, D.D., secretary of the Freedman’s Commission of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and Reverend Thomas Atkinson, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina. Bishop Atkinson became the first president of the Board of Trustees and Dr. Smith was the first principal. The school opened its doors for instruction on January 13, 1868. In 1893, the School’s name changed from Saint Augustine Normal School to Saint Augustine’s School. In 1919, the name changed to Saint Augustine’s Junior College. The School became a four-year institution in 1927. In 1928, the institution was renamed Saint Augustine’s College. Baccalaureate degrees were first awarded in 1931. The College established St. Agnes Hospital and Training School for Nurses to provide medical care for and by African Americans. It was the first nursing school in the state of North Carolina for African-American students and served as the only hospital to serve African Americans until 1960. The University was the nation’s first HBCU to own an on-campus commercial radio station (WAUG-AM Power 750) and television station (WAUG-TV 168). Since the beginning of its existence, Saint Augustine’s University has blazed the trails in academics. Alumna Anna Julia Cooper, who was a prominent writer, educator, and scholar, became the fourth African-American woman in the US to earn a doctoral degree. Falcons soar in academics and athletics. The men’s track and field team has experienced the victory of being Number #1 on numerous occasions. Saint Augustine’s University alumnus, legendary head track and field coach, and athletic director, George “Pup” Williams, has built a dynasty in track and field and cross country at the University. Since he began coaching in 1976, his track and field programs have won an astounding 39 national championships. Williams has coached 39 Olympians including three gold medalists. On August 1, 2012, Saint Augustine’s College transitioned in name and status to Saint Augustine’s University. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #hbcu https://www.instagram.com/p/CgMLFcTuiuN6uY8rqt9M0umzeF5irI137g9a0M0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

DIANE ARBUS
Diane Arbus photographer, was born March 14, 1923 in Manhattan and passed July 26, 1971 in New York city at only 48 years old. She is considered one of Americas’ great photographic artists.
She was born to the wealthy Jewish family who owned the fashionable fifth avenue department store, Russeks. Dianes’ father David Nemerov, was constantly busy with running the family business. Her mother Gertrude Russek Nemerov, was consumed with the social life in New York and was diagnosed with clinical depression. They were not the picture of parenting. Diane, her brother Howard and sister Renee were raised by governesses and maids.
As Diane grew older she separated herself form her family.
Tumblr media
Diane met her husband Allan Arbus at 14 while at school. Married at 18 years old, they had 2 daughters, Doom and Amy. Allan was a World War II photographer and started his civilian career as a photographer with Diane when they married. The pair were favourite fashion photographers of magazines like Seventeen, Harpers Bazaar and Esquire. Diane directed the shoots and Allan did the photography. Diane and Allan separated in 1959, but continued to remain friends and share a dark room until 1969, at which time they divorced and Allan moved to California to pursue a acting career. He gained notoriety for his role on the television series M.A.S.H. as Dr. Sidney Freedman. Allan made sure that Diane still had a dark room and they continued their friendship until her death.
In 1956 Diane had been encouraged by friends to pursue her own photography and she did. She became known for using a twin-lens reflex Rolleiflex camera due to the image size and the clarity. Diane also used a 2 1/4 Mamiyaflix camera. Living in New York, Diane would walk the streets looking for subjects to shoot. Many of her subjects were men wearing make up, freak show performers, street people and people with disabilities. Anyone who looked different or unusual, and many she befriended. She pushed the boundaries of what was called acceptable photography of the age. She is quoted “ I really believe there are things that nobody would see, unless I photograph them.” It is said that she photographed people different from herself, to make her feel less privileged from her sheltered upbringing.
Diane never made a good living from her art and in 1963 she was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship and this was renewed in 1966.
During the 1960’s she supported herself shooting documentary photos and magazine commissions. Diane also photographed famous people like Jane Mansfield, Ozzie and Harriet Neilson, Norman Mailer and Gloria Vanderbilt’s young son Anderson Cooper. There were many others as well. As her fame increased, her work with magazines diminished. Diane taught photography at Parson’s School of Design, the Cooper Union in New York, and Rhode Island School of Design.
In 1967 Diane had her first exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Along with two other artists, she was recognized as “a new generation of photography”.
Diane Arbus suffered with depression thoughtout her life. It is noted that she was struggling in a letter to her friend Carlotta Marshall, who she also photographed. Her ex-husband Allan also said Diane had episodes of violent mood swings. On July 27,1971 Diane took barbiturates, got in the bath and cut both her wrists. Leaving a note saying “Last Supper”. Two days later her friend Marvin Israel discovered her. She was only 48 years old. To think what she could have achieved. Depression seems almost be a common thread among some artists of all genres - music, painting, acting and photography.
There have been ongoing struggles with Dianes’ estate, as she had no will. There has been much controversy about the use of her photographic works. Her daughter Doon has tried to maintain control over her work to protect her legacy
Since her death there have been many exhibitions of her work. Several books have also been written, one by Doon and friend Marvin Israel. There is a film loosely based on her life titled “Fur”. This movie was considered a “Fairytale”. In 2007 the Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased 20 of Arbus’ photographs, apparently worth millions. Also the MET received archives of her work including hundreds of negatives, early and unique photographs, prints and 7500 rolls of film, as a gift from her estate. It is wonderful that Diane Arbus’ work will be protected and cared for future generations.
There are so many articles online about Diane. Her daughter Doon made a documentary film about her in 1972, a year after her passing. You can find this on Youtube.
Keep learning, keep well-
Diana

Closed Starter for @littlexunsteady for Cooper
Justin had heard that Cooper was in the hospital. Taking a liking to the other man and hoping to learn from him a bit. Cooper wasn’t a surgeon but he was a peds doctor so it never hurt to gain any wisdom when it came to dealing with kids. Happy to have been on the peds floor today he got his lab coat on and headed for the peds floor. Once up there he greeted the nurses and looked around for Cooper. Seeing him heading out of one of the rooms he walked over to him. “Hello, Dr. Freedman. I heard you were here today.”

“Dr. Freedman!  Hi!  Hello!  How are you?” Levi called out as he ran to catch up with the attending physician.  He had a few questions before Cooper left for the practice, and Levi didn’t want to have to leave messages with the receptionist and wait for a call back.  He took a breath when he finally caught up with the other man.

Where The Lincoln’s Chapter 2: Illness
It was a typical night in the Lincoln Household, the sound of children sleeping filled the house with a calming sound for the most part. Amelia and Link were getting ready for bed by changing Elsa and feeding her before putting her in the bassinet next to the bed when 6 year old Annabel started crying in her bedroom. Amelia handed Elsa over to Link and ran to her daughter. She placed her hand on Annabel's forehead that she found that her daughter had a fever. Amelia yelled for Link who had just put the baby to bed to come. Link ran in the room and picked Annabel up bringing her out to the living room to keep her from waking up Eliza. Amelia called Maggie to come watch the 4 children while Link and Amelia took Annabel, and Elsa to the hospital. Amelia and Link took Elsa with them so that Maggie wouldn't have such a big amount of difficulties especially with the twins. When they got to the hospital Annabel was in a lot of pain and vomiting. Link and Amelia didn't know what was wrong with Annabel because this was the second time in a week taking her to the hospital.
"Daddy It hurts." Annabel screamed. "I know sweetie we called Dr. Freedman, and Dr. Karev to see what they could do to help because Dr. Hayes isn't sure what is going on." Amelia said. "Amelia it's okay we will figure out what is wrong with Annabel. "Daddy I got to puke again." Annabel said. "It's okay Annabel my sweet girl." Link said rubbing her head while she vomited again. "Hello, I'm Dr. James I will be in charge of Annabel's case." The doctor said. "But we called Dr. Cooper Freedman, and Dr. Alex Karev to see our daughter." Amelia said. "Dr. Shepherd they are aware of Annabel of being a niece and she calls them Uncles and unfortunately we can't have them on her case because she's like family and they would sugar coat what is going on." Dr. James replied.
Amelia couldn't believe what was going on and what was happening to her daughter when she asked for the best to be in the care of her daughter. Dr. James did some tests on Annabel that showed that there was nothing wrong with her that's when Dr. Bailey stepped in to look at the tests. She found a blockage in Annabel's stomach that needed some surgery. Amelia was scared for her daughter and didn't know why this was happening to her daughter. Bailey prepped Annabel for surgery while Amelia and Link held baby Elsa not knowing what was really going on with Annabel. It was something else to keep Amelia from returning to work considering that Elsa is 3 months old now. She was preparing to go back to work the next morning but because Annabel has been so sick she didn't know what to do.
"Amelia it's Maggie she's calling us." Link said. "Hey Maggie what's going on?" Amelia asked. "Scout is running a fever and has a rash do you want me to bring him in?" Maggie asked. "What Scout is sick two what about the twins or Eliza?" Amelia asked. "They are fine I'll bring Scout in after I drop the twins off in Kindergarten." Maggie said. "Okay we are still waiting for Annabel to come out of surgery we don't know what is going on with her." Amelia said crying. "It's okay honey she will be fine Scout will be fine they are fighters just like their mother." Link said. "I know honey but I want them to be okay." Amelia said.
About an hour later Bailey came by with the new Gastrologist Dr. Williamson to talk about what was going on with Annabel. Dr. Williamson talked to Amelia and Link to talk about how Annabel's intestines are compromised with a rare stomach disorder. He told them the options about what to do and was referring them to a doctor in Boston who specializes in the disorder. Amelia began to panic because she had heard of this disorder before in med school but never in her wildest dreams would imagine her daughter or any of her family members to have this awful disease. As for Scout he had a case of the Chicken Pox. Just another thing for them to worry about.
"Mommy I'm a chicken because I have the Chicken Pox." Scout said. "That's our boy making silly jokes even when he is sick." Link said. "Yes he's a character always making an illness a joke I wonder if he's going to be a comedian." Amelia asked. "Mommy I want to be funny to make sick kids laugh much like Sissy who is very sick is she going to die mommy?" Scout asked. "No Scout she is going to be okay she's just has to go to a special hospital to get the proper medicine to make her feel better." Amelia and Link said. "Okay Mommy I'm going to get some sleep now." Scout said.
She held Elsa who had started to cry when Meredith came by asking how Annabel was. She knew about Anna's condition and knew that it wasn't a good diagnosis. Meredith suggested going to Kansas to see Alex because he could easily help it so she could have a normal life. Amelia knew that it was an option next to going to LA to see Cooper. Later that morning Link went to work but Amelia chose to stay on maternity leave for a few more days maybe even weeks depending on how her two oldest children were doing. Scout of course would be perfectly fine but Annabel was the main concern for Amelia and Link.
A/N: So I have been suffering from writer's block and have been extremely busy but I have this sad chapter but hopefully it will get better soon Atleast Scout will be perfectly fine but Annabel however is going to have some more drama towards her diagnosis.

Shepherd’s Superheroes
Hello! During last season’s hiatus and before posting stories publicly; I wrote this and it might be one of my most favorite (out of my own writings) stories ever! A few days ago I sat down to reread it and make a few changes with more information we have gotten this season. This story is mostly an alternative-universe but mostly it’s a lot of fluffy-comfort with a small portion of angst. This is a long one!! I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I do! PS; if anyone is interested, there is a part two still in my drafts 💗😊
Traveling with an eleven month old proved to be tremendously different to Owen and Amelia than they initially it would be like, once landing, they realized it was totally worth it. The couple did not travel much due to their busy career lives but shortly after Miranda Bailey discussed with the neurosurgeon about having too many vacation days built up; both her and her fiance thought it was the perfect time to go visit and introduce the family she built with Owen, to her family. No matter how many years had passed; she has always missed them in a way that is impossible for her to describe to the average person. Half of Amelia missing her family was due to curiosity over the question of if they would be proud of her new life or not.
Eventually after their plane safely landed and the purchase of their rent-a-car was confirmed; Owen and Amelia along with Leo reached their destination and began walking towards the same red brick building that held countless amount of memories for the neurosurgeon. Once in the building the family stepped into the elevator and rested their backs on the wall, Amelia sighed causing the small boy to giggle at his mom and later causing all three of them to laugh. Watching Owen bounce Leo on his hip bone made the brunette realize that what she found attractive in Owen was drastically different than what she found attractive many years ago; as she was in the same exact elevator.
“Shut up; bitches. I need to get laid. I need to get laid, really bad.” The young brunette shared with the other two women on the elevator- in her true, non-existent filter self. Both Addison and Violet brought their conversation to a pause once hearing Amelia’s declaration. The psychologist grew concerned due to the fact of not knowing the neurosurgeon well.
“So bad that I’m going to run naked through the street and grind a cop, if something doesn’t happen soon. Wouldn’t one of you just lie on top of me and rub around, for like ten minutes.”
Her laughter amplified once the particular memory of her, Violet and Addison after Amelia returned from her Seattle trip. Owen stared at the same beautiful smile he could watch all week long and noticed how truly happy she seemed once breathing in the California air. Choosing not to question her about why her laughter changed, the two walked off the elevator with Leo beside them, towards a blonde receptionist at the desk and allowed the brunette to take charge with the plan she had in mind since sitting on the plane.
“Hello, our son; Leo, has an appointment with Dr. Cooper Freedman for his yearly checkup.” Amelia informed the blonde receptionist that appeared to be new from since her sudden departure from the group nearly six years ago.
With a confused expression upon her face, the receptionist looked up and down her computer screen to find the brunette’s name.
“I’m sorry, but are you positive his name isn’t under a different name? Maybe you are scheduled for a different day or-?” The not-so-friendly but unamused receptionist asked Amelia. Owen watched Amelia for a second before he noticed a small invisible light bulb, lit up inside of her beautiful brain. Knowing his fiancé well, the trauma surgeon took it as a cue before speaking to the blonde in front of him.
“Excuse me; ma’am? Could you please point me in the direction of the restrooms. We had a very long drive and did not think to find a place before arriving.”
The receptionist removed herself from the back of the desk; where she had been sitting and started walking with Owen and Leo, and made their way to the restrooms. Once the woman was gone and Owen’s back was turned, Amelia began to walk back to the familiar area. The area that hasn’t changed a bit. The area that so many memories were made. And that’s when she saw her family.
Deciding to have her identity remain anonymous the brunette kept her dark-shaded sunglasses on her cerulean eyes and slowly walked into the legendary kitchen of Seaside Wellness Group. Every doctor from the practice was enjoying sandwiches that appeared to be catered by a local sandwich shop.
“I was wondering where I could maybe find a doctor?”
“Oh hello; I’m sorry ma’am, but this area is for employees only. The receptionist should be able to point you in the direction of the waiting room.” The familiar and ever-so-kind male psychologist suggested to who he thought was a stranger.
Amelia continued to stand she removed her sunglasses and before she had time to fix her short hair, every person in the room gasped at who was standing in the kitchen across from them. As if on an impulse all of them stopped what they were doing and practically ran over to Amelia.
“Amelia? Amelia Shepherd? What the hell are you doin’ here?” Charlotte asked with her thick southern accent still very present, after hugging her “junkie best friend” tightly and they smiled at one another.
“Vacation! I need a vacation and I thought what better people to visit my favorite people.”
From afar stood her former sister-in-law, grinning ear to ear with tears shining in her electric blue eyes. Addison shook her head once Amelia removed herself from the blonde’s hug, neither one of them moved for a few moments until they couldn’t take a second more apart. Addison wrapped her longer arms around Amelia and held on for longer than she thought she would, the brunette buried her head into Addison’s shoulder and silently started to allow happy tears to pour out of her eyes. After reconnecting with the people Amelia loved the most, she wiped her tears away as Addison escorted her sister towards the sandwiches where she began to enjoy lunch with them just like old times.
“I have to catch up on some charts; but it is so wonderful to see you again, Amelia.” Jake told Amelia as he held several patient charts in one arm and hugged her from the side. Once done hugging him, Amelia returned to the crafting of her sandwich.
Moments later after returning from the restroom with Leo; the trauma surgeon began to wander the hallways of the welcoming practice and noticed a quiet yet beautifully lit, to his left; with the door slightly open already, he made his way inside. Unaware of a unique calmness that coursed through his body, Owen felt guided to walk towards the wall with multiple framed photographs.
“Bradley S. Kramer. Detroit, Michigan
Lucile “Lulu” E. Allen. Los Angeles, California
Sarah G. Tanner. Chicago, Illinois
Gideon T. Yang. Los Angeles, California”
The trauma surgeon read the four names to himself and saw their photographs. Confused as to what and why the four children were standing beside his fiance; Owen slightly jumped upon hearing one of the doctors at the practice he assumed was Addison’s husband based on photos Amelia has shown him in the past.
“That was an incredible day for all of us; but definitely for Amelia.” Jake told Owen as he also focused on the wall in front of the two men, a smile washed over his face as he remembered that day clearly.
“What is this exactly? Why was it such an incredible day?” The dumbfounded trauma surgeon asked the dark haired man with several patient files in between his arm muscle and his side.
“You see this little guy; right here?” Jake pointed to the photograph in the center of the wall; a small baby boy wrapped in a sky blue blanket, held by his mother. His eyes were closed and his body was small and fragile like. Some moments after fixing his eyes on the small baby; Owen noticed the woman holding the baby, none other than Amelia with a giant smile on her face holding her perfect son. The same son she had told Owen that only lived for forty three minutes, several years ago.
“This is Christopher. Amelia’s son. And children like Gideon and Lulu and Bradley are just some of the children he saved because Amelia decided to donate all of his organs so other kids could leave the hospital. He was, or should I say still is her little superhero.”
No words came to the trauma surgeon’s mouth as he remained speechless, a few months ago was one of the first times that Amelia spoke about her son and told Owen his name but she never talked about what had happened after forty three minutes had passed. She told him that she will tell him the rest of the story one day. Jake left Owen with the bright smile on his face after his visit. Removing Owen from his thoughts; the trauma surgeon heard a knock on the glass door, he looked up and saw the brunette.
“That was a spectacular day.” She said as she walked into the office in which used to be Pete’s office, the brunette watched her fiance continuing to look in shock.
“Remember when I ran away because I was afraid to have your baby?” The brunette asked him; without saying a word, Owen shook his head and turned his attention on her to agree with her.
“Well I didn’t only run away to Stephanie’s.. I flew to Los Angeles to be apart of the grand opening of this office, in my happy place. This little boy is my superhero. Each one of these kids are my superheroes.” Amelia told Owen after she hugged him tightly in a place she never imagined she would be with the love of her life. A place from her past but also a place of her present. A state that she considered home. From afar on the couch in the same somewhat large room; Leo watched on has his parents embraced and giggled. Causing all three of them to laugh.
Hope you all enjoyed!

Closed Starter for @epiphanics for Cooper
Josh had been put on peds for the day and he wasn’t exactly thrilled about it. He loved kids but just didn’t enjoy working with them. He wanted to be back at plastics but he was here so he had to deal with it. When he saw a patient come in they told him to page over to practice because the patient was on of Dr. Freedman’s. So he let the nurse know to page Dr. Freedman and he waited for him to show up. Looking down at the chart and closing it. He looked up to see a man walking towards him. “You must be Dr. Freedman?”

“Dr. Freedman!  Hi.  Good afternoon!” Levi greeted as he met the pediatrician as he came onto the floor.  He had been working on a lot of peds cases and had already pulled both charts the other man who need.  “Glad I caught you.  Just rounded on these guys,” he explained before passing the charts off.
