Min'atoa Portal Station - New Arrival
You arrive through a crystal portal to the portal station of Min’atoa, crafted and built as the beautiful pleasure world of the Tempire Hexsystem. Explore the station, find out what happened here, and how to get out.
My game, in my ‘spare’ time with a buddy, while I’m learning just a few things I need to make it like...game design, 3d art, Unity, coding, audio, UI, animation, narrative. Oh and writing devlogs apparently!

Min’atoa Game Devlog
Its been a while. I'm sorry, poor lonely devlog. While engrossed in making a game, its hard to make time to write about the dev process. But apparently fresh insight is highly valuable after the game is done and the process is forgotten (like childbirth - there might be very good reasons for forgetting the pain of making a game, I might never make another. And I did birth two kids...). And devlog is a course requirement.
youtube
So to recap nearly ...oh dear...two months.  Under orders I made an asset list. After being revived with smelling salts, I  was forced to trim asset quality and scope. The asset list is still terrifyingly long. The scene has most of its 3D assets and basic functions errr functioning. Drawers open, lights turn on, buttons click...and 3D notes turn into UI notes.  With nice stationery! Textures! Fonts!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Playtesting showed players didn't want to read screeds and screeds of text on the UI, so my goal now is 'show not tell' - which means making props, creating images and recording audio.
I recorded myself (cringe) voice acting. Found that players didn't want to listen to long audio either! Pesky players! Back to the drawing board - trim the audio, trim the text even further.  When players started the game they wanted to know quickly where they are, and what the rules of the 'world' are. The design of the intro is going to be very important, given that they didn't want a long exposition.
A big part of story game design is 'gating' players so they don't get story spoilers too soon, but feel like they have choice about where they go and what they read.  To encourage players to read notes, when players pick up a note, they sometimes find under it, the key that unlocks the next clue. Hmmm reminds me of treasure hunts, in long ago childhood parties.
Tumblr media
So to ramp up that mechanic a notch, I have locked drawers and doors, and have created gated areas within the room.

Oh that reminds me! Apparently its an 'Escape Room' game, I discovered today.  Who knew their genres?
Some another in-game screenshot for your viewing pleasure:

I hope you see progress over two months.  In that time also, life happened.
I learned that doing 'research' playing other games is risky - I got captivated by a game, so progress almost halted 'til I tore myself free. Pesky games!
My fellow dev has been absent for 3 months, so this is solo work.
I was thrilled to interviewed for a job with Weta GameShop (didn't get it, but even so!) and invited to be a playtester for another game studio. Life options after study suddenly became very real.
So that's my devlog. Until  next time, my thousands of super excited fans, fellow crazy devs and wild and woolly gamers!

✏️ Spring Sauna's Bring May Lasagna's (Does That Even Rhyme?) | 🎮 Proteus @curvedigital ⁣ It happens too many days that begin by looking the best; just then a cloud conjures itself and winds pick up from the west. ⁣ ⁣ Reflexes see you bummed as you stand there in drenched clothes. Lost in A Forest Game DevLog 4
A video clip of the beta build of our game.....I hope you notice at the end the new volume sliders for each of the audio asset types. I started with Alexander Zolov’s excellent simple tutorial here. However, I’d spent quite a bit of time tweaking the volumes to balance the various audio in the game. I had to do actual maths to adjust the script for the different maximum volumes for each AudioSource, adjusting each maximum volume in proportion to its initial volume setting. I was pretty pleased with myself for getting that done in one class.
I also followed a great series of Brackeys tutorials on making menus, including one that helped me with making the UI stretchy, and sized for different monitors. Since I don’t have a downloadable build yet, only time will tell if that worked!
From Vinnie’s lovely storyboard art,  Kyle created two .mp4 scenes (an intro and outro) that tell the story behind the game. Up to then we had mostly been working in separate Main Menu and Game scenes (with Scene Fusion TM). So of course, Murphy’s Law, when we were under pressure, and put them all together, everything broke. When a scene loads, it resets various settings, which breaks, among other things, the audio and UI systems...
Kadin did  the heavy lifting on debugging each bit; I (for example) fixed the lock cursor settings (described last devlog), restarting the particle effects, and ensuring the scene names in the build settings match the loadscene script...so between us on Friday the game was ALL WORKING!! Yay!!
I also created a “Escape to Skip” panel for the new intro, for when a player doesn’t want to go through the intro again. An issue that I have identified, but haven’t yet fixed, is that it takes about 7 seconds to load the game, and given the long intro we have the potential to load it in the background using  LoadSceneAsync and allowSceneActivation - that’s first thing on my list for tomorrow.
It’s currently being playtested, so once we get feedback sorted, we'll be putting this game up on itch.io. Maybe as soon as a week or so ..
So watch this space!!! You saw it first here.

Post Launch Blues...Goodest Boi
Thanks for so many of you trying out our freebie game! It’s great to share our musings with the world. However when I downloaded it to my MacBook at home, it ran like treacle. I did a bunch of optimising, tried it again faster treacle but still treacle...Or maybe you younger peeps have never been made to eat treacle anyway so you don’t know what I am talking about. I am currently trying to optimise things but it will take a wee while and the whole team has an autumnal cold (sniff cough) so bear with us!
In the meantime, one of my favourite moments when you get the first sight of the mountain and river....
