Confusion in determining Chinese Dialect/Pronunciation of Character’s Name

When I googled "why native english writers often mistakenly mixed chinese dialect/pronunciation in naming characters?" The results of the search instead hilariously switched the subject.

Actually, I was curious about the further discussion regarding the similar topic from this video from Accented Cinema at minute 8:43

For example, having a character named “Fai” in a fanfic from TGCF fandom. FYI, TGCF is a danmei novel originally written in Mandarin by MXTX. 

I don't know where the fanfic author got the name "Fai" for their OC, the info I got from googling is this:

According to google, “Fai” is a Chinese boys name meaning 'growth' or 'beginning'.

Then I got like two hanzi which are pronounced as “Fai”,  「 非 」 and  「 辉 」.

I always use wiktionary.org to check how every hanzi and kanji are pronounced in various dialects (I suggest that we as the writers to use that/or other better alternative in the future), and here’s the information regarding “Fai”:

In Mandarin, this  「 非 」 should have been pronounced as “ Fēi ”.

As a note,  「 輝 」 is a traditional form of  「 辉 」, and in Mandarin, this 「 辉 」 should have been pronounced as “Huī”. The writer accidentally mixed the Cantonese pronunciation into a fandom which its character names are mainly pronounced in Mandarin.

Another case is the name "Kuo" (still in TGCF settings):

The top result from Google said that “Kuo” is the transliteration of several different Chinese surnames, its meaning varies depending on how it is spelled in Chinese, and which dialect it is pronounced in.

in Mandarin, this 「 郭 」 should have been more accurately pronounced as “Guō”.

Actually it's nothing serious for me (other than just me being nitpicky), and if what the writers mean is to show the diversity of their characters in ethnicity/origin (will be relevant to their story), then that's fine.

Example:

Fei Yi was born in Beijing, but lived in Hong Kong long enough for him to know Leung Siufan and form a friendship that continues till these days.

But if that’s not the case, I think we’ll better pay more attention to this in the future.

Remember that Chinese language is not just “chang ching chong” noises, like my country, they also have many ethnicities and dialects. They have more diversity than what mainstream popular culture generally portrays.

I realize that most native English are likely still heavily influenced by Cantonese pronunciation regarding Chinese language, considering the history of Hong Kong which is often used as a main reference for popular culture in writing China (it was established as a colony of the British Empire after the Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong Island in 1841-1842).

My suggestion is, if you are still new to Chinese, when creating OC/character names, use the keyword "List of Mandarin Baby Names" instead of "List of Chinese Baby Names" if your universe settings mainly use Mandarin Pronunciation. Or if your story takes place in Hong Kong, use keyword “List of Cantonese Baby Names” for your character’s name.

Or pick any Chinese Name, get its hanzi, then check it on wiktionary.org to pick which pronunciation you like to use.

So that in the future, there will be no more “Fa Mulan” (Hua Mulan or Fa Muklan!?), and “Xu Shangchi” / Xú Shàngqì (徐尚氣) with his sister “Xú Xiàlíng” / Hsü Hsialing (徐夏靈).

since everyone is calling pjo out for inaccurate rep anyway i might as well add some more gasoline to the fire lmao

frank zhang’s name.

his grandmother says “frank” is too english a name and not chinese enough and insists on calling her grandson “fai”. now, chinese has a lot of sub-languages (300+). the zhang family speaks mandarin.

fai isn’t mandarin. in no way does “fai” create one word in the hanyu pinyin system. it’s clear that rick just randomly made up a word and slapped it onto the pages. it’s like calling chinese people lingling, ching chong and such. words may sound “mandarin” to english-speakers, but it doesn’t mean it is mandarin. 

since grandma zhang insisted on addressing frank with a more “chinese” name and she speaks mandarin, i don’t think she’d pick “fai” to call him. you can argue that “fai” is a wades-giles variant spelling, but she seemed extremely proud of her chinese heritage, so i doubt she’d want to use a foreigner’s romanization system.

“UNIFYING PRESENCE”

Design brief: To unify

YTL Corporation Berhad, a large Malaysian infrastructure conglomerate founded in 1955, grew from a small construction firm into a global infrastructure company spanning oil & gas, cement, construction, property development and hotels.

Previously occupying various offices in different locations, this YTL Headquarters located in Central Kuala Lumper (along Jalan Bukit Bintang) brings together for the first time, the entire suite of YTL departments (numbering more than a dozen, comprising 1000 staff members), each of which have developed their own culture and operations.

The brief for MOD (Ministry of Design)was to design the public areas shared by these departments, i.e. Ground Floor lobby and levels 8-10, and present a unified brand identity under one roof. As such, MOD sought to create a series of choreographed spatial experiences which aim to balance YTL’s legacy of corporate professionalism with a future-forward attitude that embraces change.

Design concept: To respect legacy and infuse future-forwardness

There are 2 main public area zones, the Ground Floor lobby, and 3 upper floors (levels 8-10) which comprises a host of collective meeting zones, and a cafe.

At the Ground Floor, visitors are greeted by a vertically cavernous lobby which spans more than 25-meters in height (7 floors). The design challenge for MOD, was how to enhance the majestic quality of the space, yet not dwarf the human scale and provide a welcoming entrance. As such, the lobby is a study in proportion, light control and a disciplined use of materials. The soaring space has been designed to capture the rays of light in the daytime, and glow like a lantern in the evening.

MOD designed the marble-clad columns such that its rhythm is denser and more grounded at the bottom, yet getting lighter towards the top, giving the impression of ascending lightness. MOD inserted horizontal striations and ridges using bronze accents, in the continuing pattern of white Bugatsa Marble, to provide visual relief rather than a continuous ascension to the top.

A glittering art installation hovers like a cloud over a series of pavilion niches, which provide a sense of human scale in this vast space. MOD designed the seating areas as architectural pavilion niches rather than mere decorative benches. These seating areas provide iconic Barcelona Couches for visitors to sit on and admire the lobby’s majestic cavernous quality, and the pavilion niches are also designed in the same restrained material palette, featuring bronze bead blast metal trims for consistency.

After a visitor signs in at the reception desk and proceeds past the turnstiles, they would indicate the destination floor number at the lift call button area before entering the lift lobby (incorporating a “destination-dispatching” elevator system). Design-wise, while MOD wanted to keep the entrance experience entirely symmetrical from the drop-off to the lift car, there was an existing stair core which prevents this symmetry; in response, MOD created a bronze-clad “portal” to anchor the lift portal and draw a visitor’s eyes towards that lift lobby when he enters the main lobby. The lift lobby is accented with the same bronze metal as the main lobby for a consistently disciplined material palette.

Levels 8 to 10 comprise a café, multiple types of open & closed meeting spaces and a 122-pax function room. This public zone is conceived to be an extension of the lobby area, and is conceptualized to be the point of interface between YTL staff and external visitors and consultants.

The “heart” of L8 is the handsome grey granite café counter with bronze shelves and oak timber ceilings and walls. Serving up freshly baked confectionary as well as aromatic espressos, this café counter is designed with a rough-edged split-face granite on its vertical surfaces and a smooth black sesame polished granite for the horizontal counter.

To introduce connectivity between Levels 8 and 9, MOD introduced a void and a feature spiral stair, designing an arresting and dynamic cage-like stair with vertical rods made of powdercoated bronze metal, sitting on a bed of black gravel. A visitor is meant to feel a sense of timeless elegance and beautifully crafted materiality whilst climbing the stair, with one hand on the elegant leather handrails.

On all three levels 8, 9, and 10, MOD has created a myriad of meeting space types to suit a variety of small to large gatherings, private to non-private. These spaces range from casual communal tables, open discussion areas, hot-desk / banquette seating / booth seating areas, to semi-enclosed meeting rooms, acoustically private rooms, a VIP room and a large multi-function meeting area that can seat 122 persons.

These spaces are designed with a warm and sophisticated palette, featuring warm oak timber for the walls and ceilings, silver mink marble flooring, and black powder-coated metal trims for lighting fixtures. The café, banquette and booth seating are upholstered in German-based innovative fabric from Saum & Viebahn whose “magic” range features high quality fabrics built for high-usage and easy maintenance.

The tables feature either striking black Nero Marquina marble or elegant white Calacatta marble. The enclosed meeting rooms feature handsome carpet flooring from the Net Effect Collection, elegant brown leather chairs and timber tables.

[1600 Word Essay] Women’s & Minority Representation in DTV Martial Arts Movies

It’s long interested (and, recently, concerned) me how movies represent women and minorities (ethnic and cultural). As of late, I’ve turned this scrutiny on my particular film niche – direct-to-video American martial arts movies. Specifically, I wanted to measure which demographic was most likely to produce stars within the subgenre. I already had an idea, but the results were still a little surprising.

I’ve collected the data as to who’s been a leading star in these sorts of movies since 1985. All of the performers listed below have starred in or co-led at least three US-based DTV/limited release action/martial arts productions. Where applicable, I’ve substituted a starring role in a TV production in lieu of a third film lead.

The obvious implications of this data are that (1) white men enjoy far greater representation than all other groups, and (2) women of color are completely unrepresented. Additionally, no other ethnicities or cultural identities than the ones listed here are represented at all, and this includes Asians who don’t fall under the eastern or southeastern headings.

So... What’s the problem here? What’s the issue, especially since we’re talking about such a very specific subgenre? Well, to everybody outside of this niche, there isn’t a problem beyond the degree to which DTV action flicks mirror the larger filmmaking scene. However, representation matters here as much as for any genre because it helps determine the future of this kind of movie. If these films are viewed by customers and filmmakers as primarily a gilding hall for white male leads, the number of women and minorities vying for anything beyond stuntwork or supporting parts isn’t encouraged to grow...and that’s likely to deprive us all of potentially great talent. Women, people of color, and other minorities help comprise the cream of the martial arts crop, and the thought of losing out on the next potential Cynthia Rothrock or Michael Jai White is galling. These movies don’t necessarily thrive on technical or dramatic innovation, but rather the physical innovation of its performers. Given this, it’s within everybody’s interest that anybody with the potential to thrill martial enthusiasts be duly considered.

“Objection: As this data only represents the DTV realm, it’s not an accurate portrayal of representation in American filmmaking or even the action/martial arts genre as a whole.”

The fact that DTV films don’t encompass the entirety of a genre doesn’t negate the significance of their own sector, the same way that one avenue of occupation needn’t encompass the entire job market to have unique implications for those involved. Though often viewed as a derivative of Hollywood, the DTV realm is very much its own place with unique hierarchies and politics. Entire careers are played out within it. What’s more, the DTV circuit isn’t so small as to be insignificant: even if the U.S. blockbuster scene became a beacon of representation, poor practices in the DTV scene could still be enough to unsettle the landscape. When you consider that less than 100 films are given a widespread theatrical release in the U.S. each year, it’s easy to imagine how quickly the smaller, quickly-produced releases can overtake them in quantity. Add to that the popularity of online video streaming services and their equalizing nature, and you can see that DTV flicks are a significant part the national film market.

“Objection: A quantitative measurement doesn’t properly convey how well a group is represented. For example, Wesley Snipes is more prolific and successful than almost every white male star listed here.”

Aside from the fact that too many demographics are still entirely unrepresented, the problem with pointing to a Wesley Snipes or a Lorenzo Lamas as adequate representation for an entire group is that it closes off the chances for anyone else who might fall within that demographic. If you take one prominent star and say there’s no need for additional representation, then what reason is there for someone else from that group to be taken on? Again, the result is the DTV circuit potentially depriving itself of the next great showstopper.

“Objection: The sample is too limiting. There’d be more women and minority entrants if you counted those with fewer than three starring roles and/or counted supporting ones (e.g. lead villains).”

I opted for no less than three starring roles because this indicates an established career within the DTV realm, which indicates a willingness of studios/distributors to repeatedly invest in a performer – this is, to some degree, the mark of a star. I’ve limited the credits to lead roles because such parts convey prestige and social esteem, and this is important. Yes, fans can definitely find favorites among lifetime supporting players, but supporting role or even those of the lead villain typically don’t convey the positive qualities that usually define protagonists. Aside from being promoted the most, lead characters are most likely the ones the audience is encouraged to identify with. By comparison, other roles don’t measure up.

“Objection: Maybe there aren’t more women/minorities in lead roles because there are no viable contenders.”

Here’s but a small sample of viable contenders – women and men with the necessary physical talent to lead a fight flick.

“Do you have any good news?”

The good news is that the trend of white guys dominating this subgenre does seem to be abating as we move further into the 21st century. Of the 52 names in the sample, thirteen (13) are individuals who’ve begun starring in these movies within the past 16 years; of these, only 5 are white men – about 38 percent of the total.

Also, I get the impression that big-budget Hollywood is making an effort to diversify the selection of people it has leading its movies. Short of stepping down from a theatrical career, there are generally two ways that new performers acquire starring roles in the DTV scene: (1) they work their way up from smaller parts and/or stuntwork, or (2) they finance or co-finance their own productions. In either case, what you need to do is support them. Help finance indie projects they’re developing via crowd-funding. Feature them and their work on your social media. If they’ve had parts in studio work, review these movies publicly and point out that their involvement is the reason you looked at the picture in the first place. And if a movie they’ve starred in gets released, buy it directly – don’t download or buy it from a third party seller, and for goodness sake don’t post the whole thing online for free.

It’s up to the performer(s) in question to prove that they’d rock a starring role, but it’s up us to make their effort worth it.
