St.Hilaire to Soult, 1807

A brief snippet from a book that lists (somewhat hodgepodge) different reports and correpondence relating to the French occupation of Prussia in 1807 to 1809, “Berichte aus der Berliner Franzosenzeit 1807 - 1809″: When Victor was named gouverneur of Berlin and surroundings mid-1807, general St.Hilaire, who before famously had commanded the first division of Soult’s army corps and had been one of the generals to take Pratzen heights at Austerlitz, was transferred to Berlin in order to command the troops under Victor. So he had to leave his old post and his old corps.

St. Hilaire had commanded the First Division of the Fourth Corps under Marshal Soult. When he was recalled to Berlin, he wrote to Soult from Finkenstein on 29 August 1807 expressing his hope of retaining the marshal's affection: " cet espoir adoucit le regret de me voir separé de ma famille militaire, sans savoir, si je suis destiné à la rejoindre. "

The French passage says: “this hope softens the regret of seeing myself separated from my military family, without knowing if I am destined to return to it.“

That term “military family” I found very touching. There are more examples of such letters, not only from Soult’s corps. This one just surprised me.

EDITOR: “Christmas Time is Coming” is a favorite song of mine that reminds me of another favorite, Advent season, the anticipation of the birth of Christ.  Many churches use an Advent wreath to light an Advent candle each of the 4 Sundays before Christmas to reflect and prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ.  The first candle is purple and represents  Hope of the Savior through the prophesies.  The second candle is purple and represents Peace that comes from trust in God’s promises.  The third candle is pink and represents Joy as we rejoice in the promised birth.  The fourth candle is purple and represents Love of our Father God in Heaven.  Finally, the 5th candle is white, located in the center of the wreath, and represents Christ, God with us, which is what Christmas is all about! Christmas is coming! Let our hearts be glad in the anticipation of the season.   LRMartin

ESCAPED PRISONERS THOUGHT SIGHTED NEAR SALEM - (The following story was in the July 8, 1953 issue of the Keowee Courier). . .Residents of the Salem area experienced quite a flurry of tense excitement Thursday afternoon when two men answering the descriptions of two bandits who recently escaped from the Greenville county jail were spotted in the Boone's Creek section. . .They were spotted on the property of Garvin Littleton near the creek, first by Mr. Littleton's daughter. She returned home and told her family about the men, and Mr. Littleton recalled that he had read a story about two escaped prisoners in the newspaper. . .He walked down the path toward the creek, and he too saw the men standing on the bank. They also saw him, and when they did they fled into the woods. . .Mr. Littleton went to Salem and reported the sighting, and Rug Burgess accompanied him back to his home and they went to the creek, but no one was to be seen. . .Meanwhile, word of the sighting spread around Salem like wildfire, and Oconee lawmen were summoned. However, other than footprints along the bank, no other traces of the two men could be found, and it will probably never be determined if they were the escaped bandits or simply a pair of trespassing fishermen.

Jottings from Miz Jeannie  by Jeannie Barnwell                   Wreaths Across America- Patsy Earnhardt,  Debbie Kimbrell and I promote patriotism by decorating  23 veterans' graves at our Salem Methodist Church at Christmas.   The cemetery had been pretty much ignored. But when we had a purpose to study it, it became a fascinating history lesson!  One soldier died in combat in World War II. The remaining  22 veterans returned to Salem after serving in the military.  As well as peacetime service, these men participated in World Wars I and II, Korea,  and Vietnam.   And Oh! Yes! In our cemetery one lone Confederate soldier rests. Since he didn't have a plantation or slaves, we ordered a wreath for him, too.                                                                                                                          *Favorites:  Sony 107.9 radio. School District of Oconee County: The next public meeting is Monday, December 11 at 6pm at the District Office, 414 SOUTH PINE STREET, Walhalla. We need support to protest the closing of our Tamassee-Salem Elementary School.  Send each board member an email, found on the Oconee County School District website, with valid reasons to protect our school, and our tax-payer dollars invested on Highway 11.  The 20 acres of land and building will return to the Tamassee DAR if they close T-S El.  How will that save taxpayers money when the school board will need to purchase more land in the future at who knows the cost of future land?  T-S El is an asset now as well an investment for the future already  in our possession.  The School Administration wants to give away this valuable asset. In Mark 9:23  Jesus said,  “All things are possible to him that believes.”    Please join me and pray for hearts to open, ears to hear, and eyes to see.  LRM

Trieste: la mostra fotografica "lost places" di Barbara Essl inaugurata nella sala Leonor Fini del Magazzino 26 del Porto Vecchio. Giovedì 16 marzo, alle ore 11.00, nella sala Leonor Fini del Magazzino 26 del Porto Vecchio – Porto Vivo di Trieste, sarà inaugurata la mostra “Lost Places” della fotoartista Barbara Essl, organizzata dal Comune di Trieste. Dal 17 marzo al 7 maggio si potranno ammirare una cinquantina di opere della fotografa austriaca Barbara Essl raccolte in una mostra ad ingresso libero, prima esposizione nella sala Leonor Fini dopo il recente riallestimento, sita presso lo storico Magazzino 26 del Porto Vecchio di Trieste. Dal 2013 Essl lavora alla serie “Lost Places”, “luoghi abbandonati”, mappando singoli edifici o aree nel loro degrado e trasformazione. L'artista, attiva a livello internazionale, è interessata al quotidiano, al quasi dimenticato o al represso, di cui fa emergere le storie dall'anonimato. Nell’attuale lavoro presenta, tra le altre, fotografie di palazzi storici a Trieste, Fiume, Venezia e Vienna, che per il loro tempo dimostravano lo sviluppo fortemente accelerato della tecnologia, della medicina e della scienza che hanno accompagnato l'espansione delle relazioni commerciali all'interno dell'Europa e la conseguente prosperità, simboleggiata dalla cultura e da una vivace attività di viaggio. Rivela officine e magazzini industriali, strutture per il tempo libero ed ospedali che sono stati privati della loro funzione come manifestazioni di pietra di utopie (sociali) del passato e del desiderio di una vita migliore. Essl racconta i valori e gli aneliti del tempo e l'integrazione dell'individuo nel mondo che ha trovato. L'artista riporta così nella memoria collettiva luoghi che si trovano ai margini dell'orizzonte, luoghi che - in quanto contro-mondo rispetto alle strutture che oggi dominano - aprono altri mondi e la cui entrata e uscita non è possibile per tutti e che, inoltre, in modo inspiegabile, sembrano resistere alla riconquista e creano molte barriere interiori ed esterne misteriose. Barbara Essl ha completato la sua formazione fotografica a Parigi come allieva di Paolo Roversi e ha trovato rapidamente il suo stile inconfondibile. La sua attenzione tematica si concentra sull'affascinante dissoluzione di luoghi, figure e oggetti in decadenza e dimenticati. Utilizzando diverse tecniche fotografiche e pittoriche, rivela l'unicità delle proprie entità e le impregna di un'aura misteriosa, rintracciando così la loro anima e facendole risuonare di nuovo. L’esposizione è ad ingresso libero e resterà aperta fino al 7 maggio, giovedì e venerdì dalle 10.00 alle 18.00; sabato, domenica e festivi dalla 10.00 alle 20.00. A brief snippet from Saint-Chamans’ memoirs, taking place on the morning after the battle: 

It was during this same visit to the battlefield of Eylau that the Emperor, having seen a young Russian hussar lying on the snow with his leg shattered by a cannonball, had him questioned by an interpreter, who translated the words of this hussar as follows: "Tell the Emperor to have me healed, and I will serve him as I served Alexander.”

Napoleon ordered one of his surgeons to take care of him; I do not know what has become of him since, but this story has provided the subject of several paintings, and I saw shortly afterwards M. Lejeune, a good painter of battles and Berthier's aide-de-camp, working on a painting about this event at Finkenstein.

So, we know how Lejeune spent all those weeks in Poland.
