Ranking the Doraemon Movies

Having watched (or rewatched) and reviewed every Doraemon movie released up to this point, the temptation to rank them is hard to resist. I’ll stress that the following ranking is of course based on my own opinions and I can’t pretend to represent any sort of consensus viewpoint. The Doraemon films have played with such a wide variety of settings and story genres that it’d only be natural for different viewers’ rankings to differ dramatically based on personal taste.

It’s striking to me that even after over 40 installments, there are very few Doraemon movies that I’d outright consider “not worth watching”. Not only that, but each cinematic storyline manages to do something that sets itself apart from the others (excluding remakes, that’s a total of 36 unique narratives to date). Considering how easy it would be for the nearly annual releases of such a long-running, popular franchise to descend into staleness and mediocrity, that is quite an achievement. No, not every Doraemon film is a winner, and I’m not going to claim that even my favorite movies in the franchise are the pinnacle of animated entertainment. However, if you enjoy family-friendly science fiction about adventure and friendship, there are certainly worse ways to spend an evening than with a Doraemon movie that has an enticing premise.

Also, because I have to be a dork about this, I made a graph of this ranking with the movies ordered by release date. Each film is assigned a score based on its ranking, with the highest-rated having a score of 42 and the lowest-rated having a score of 1. The green line on the left separates the entries produced within the manga author Fujiko F. Fujio’s lifetime from those that came afterward, whereas the green line on the right marks the beginning of the 2005 anime reboot.

It’s interesting to see where the rises and dips are (or so I think). Looks like I’m not a fan of most movies that came out during the first decade of the anime reboot! More recent Doraemon films, however, have started rising in the ranks again. I look forward to seeing this year’s movie!

Yuya Hashizume.

Fascinatingly unique portraits from Japanese artist Yuya Hashizume.

Hashizume, who is from Okayama Prefecture, Japan, gained recognition for his "eyewater" series, which showcases subjects reminiscent of Japanese anime with single-color backgrounds, captured at the moment a tear falls from their eyes. Drawing inspiration from manga artist Fujiko F. Fujio and his popular character Doraemon, Hashizume's work explores themes of originality, fiction, and anonymity while incorporating the rounded drawing style he admired in the Doraemon series.

Hashizume's artistic journey began with self-taught art and illustration before presenting his work in independently organized exhibitions. His first exhibition, "eyewater" in Tokyo, garnered a well deserved response from viewers and art critics alike. Since then, he has held solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Bangkok, Seoul, and London, including a successful large-scale solo exhibition "eyewater SHANGHAI" at XU Gallery, Powerlong Museum, Shanghai. Hashizume's hometown of Okayama remains important to him, as he frequently holds exhibitions there and aims to contribute to the local community on an ongoing basis.

Doraemon Vol. 16 from The Complete Works of Fujiko F. Fujio

The stories here were published in 1984–1991. At this late stage in Doraemon's magazine run, reruns of previous stories were becoming more common, so more years' worth new stories can be collected into a single volume. Some of the most iconic ones from this one (as determined by my personal experience and biases):

"きこりの泉" ("Woodcutter's Spring", 1984): Doraemon brings out a mechanical pond inspired by the "Honest Woodcutter" fable: dropping an object into the pond will cause a robot spirit to emerge with an improved version of that object and question the user about whether this was the version they originally had; if the user answers honestly, they will be given the improved object. Everything works out until Gian ends up falling into the pond, resulting in Nobita and Doraemon being given a "nice Gian" and the original Gian being trapped in the pool. Despite appearing only in this one story, "nice Gian" is an iconic Doraemon character and often featured in official merchandise. There is also a statue of him on display at the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum.

"顔か力かIQか" ("Looks, Strength, or IQ?, 1988): To help Nobita complete his homework faster, Doraemon gives him a gadget that can elevate his looks, strength, or intelligence (but raising one will lower the others to compensate). As usual, Nobita decides to try the gadget out for other purposes and nothing goes as planned.

"しずちゃんをとりもどせ" ("Winning Back Shizuka", 1989): Nobita uses Doraemon's Time TV to see what his future family gets up to, and is shocked to see grown-up Shizuka looking after a child who looks like Dekisugi. Thinking that his future marriage is in jeopardy, Nobita vows to get better at household chores so he can impress Shizuka. (In reality, future Shizuka and Nobita are watching Dekisugi's son for him while he and his spouse go on a business trip to Mars.)

"ふたりっきりでなにしてる?" ("What are You Two Doing?", 1989): It's Nobita's birthday, but all Shizuka apparently wants to do is hang out with Dekisugi, so a bitter Nobita uses Doraemon's Enclosed Space Scanner to spy on what they're doing. (They're baking a cake for him as a surprise. If I had a nickel for every time a 1989 Doraemon story had the premise of Nobita misunderstanding a situation involving Shizuka and Dekisugi...)

"ジャイ子の新作まんが" ("Jaiko's New Manga", 1990): Jaiko is struggling to brainstorm ideas for a new manga, so Gian repeatedly demands that Doraemon and Nobita help her out in various ways, including using the Time Machine to collect reference material for her to use.

75. Đến một hội chợ địa phương và ăn sập mọi món bán ở đây

77. Vào ngồi xuyên đêm tại một quán cafe manga

=> thực ra nếu xuyên đêm thì thử khách sạn con nhộng hay ho hơn

78. Mặc trang phục samurai dạo quanh thành Kasumigajo

=>(e là nữ ạ=))

79. Nhậu kiểu Nhật: uống sake, ăn oden và cơm nắm vào một ngày trời gió lạnh

=> all time wishes

80. Vào cửa hàng tiện lợi và ăn các món tại đó, rất ngon lành và tiết kiệm

=> well life of a business trip

81. Chụp ảnh với những nắp cống tuyệt đẹp trên đường phố

=> not a fan

82. Đến quán cafe trong phim Your Name ở quận Shinjuku

=> mục tiêu là mỗi lần đến Shinjuku sẽ khám phá được 1 góc, và không lạc

83. Ở dorm khi đến Nhật

=> Nope, già rồi

84. Chơi cả ngày ở Tokyo Disneyland & Disney Sea

85. Ăn món soba đặc biệt ở vùng Fukushima

List của anh này dễ thương ghê, thực ra với kinh nghiệm vài lần đi công tác ở Nhật cho hay thì cố gắng đừng bị lạc ở Nhật vì người Nhật không nói tiếng anh đâu =)))

Để xem giờ nghĩ ra thêm cái gì cho list của mình (chỉ mong lần tới tới Nhật không phải là đi công tác :D

4. Uống trà nóng ở máy bán hàng tự động,uống calpis, all kind of barley, wheat, ...... tea

5. Vào Matsumoto Kiyoshi và BigCam mua sập hầ đồ skincare và công nghệ =))

6. Đến tất cả các Starbuck cổ trong thành phố, this’s a MUSTTTTTT
