*jumps into the series, brings Emma to a coffee shop* Emma, Shin loves you!! He’s loved you this whole time, but while you’re dealing with that, I’m telling you this now because Itsuomi loves Yuki, he’s learning sign language for her, that’s why he’s been distant with you. You’ve gotta let him go, I know it’s hard but he’s found someone else, and I’m sorry. But Shin…Shin’s been pining like a forest tree for you. Let me order you some tea, not wine, not alcohol, cause you need something soothing after all this, and not something that will just make you feel worse later
*runs to find Shin* and you! Shin, get over there and talk to Emma! Tell her you love her at least, dude I know it’s hard but life’s too short and I know y’all are still young and under 25 and navigating post high school life and all these feelings but *screams* yall are stressing me out!😭
*takes Rin’s hand and runs to the bar* c’mon, let’s go get your man, hey Kyouya! We need to talk to you!

A Sign Of Affection Episode 9 Review - Sign Language Boot Camp
I think what makes A Sign of Affection such a good romance story is that the characters are young adults. Because they are adults, they handle their romance issues in adult-like manners. Whether it be confessing or expressing their feelings for their crushes or being affectionate towards a lover, the writer knows how to write it so that none of their issues are juvenile. Nobody is dense and whatever miscommunication is flung onto the characters is resolved rather quickly due to good communication.
Tumblr media
The sign language boot camp is the perfect example of this. We have Yuki and Itsuomi who are able to communicate well and still have adorable moments together as they are lovers now. For example, she had been feeling a bit down due to not being updated by Madoka regarding the job offer and she says this to Itsuomi after he noticed she was feeling down. He then apologized to her as he felt as if he had pressured her into wanting her to stress about earning money to go on vacation together; that isn’t the case, according to Yuki. Just seeing them be able to communicate without the need for words is the reason why they work so well as a couple. They both are very understanding towards each other. My favorite part was when they were eating together and Itsuomi was feeding Yuki. I was legit going “Excuse me? In front of my salad?” Such shameless flirting…
With the potential side couple, Kyouya and Rin, they have good communication too! While Rin is getting invitations from her colleague Tsujimura, she turns them down because her eyes were always set on Kyouya. I like that! She isn’t wishy-washy between two handsome guys and firmly knows who she likes and makes a beeline for him—it’s like Yuki falling for Itsuomi and charging straight into love without taking any forks in the road. I do like how some more information about Kyouya and Rin are revealed. They both had dating experiences, but are clearly interested in each other; Kyouya’s previous relationship lasted six years before calling it quits. Rin had a boyfriend in the past too. The fact that these two had dating experience also helped them understand their feelings and the signs of a potential interest in each other, which is mutual. I felt bad for Rin when she was cockblocked by a rock which then sprained her ankle. However, it is clear that they both like each other and made it clear that they are interested in dating each other. Hopefully, some good news will come out of it next episode.
I think the reason why Oushi bugs me a lot is because he’s written with the typical shoujo tropes and it just doesn’t work in this sort of setting. He loves Yuki and is jealous of Itsuomi. However, the fact that he doesn’t communicate well with her is the prime reason why he never gets good things happening to him; not only is he bad at communicating with Yuki, he is just bad at communication in general. In a romance where communication is the key factor, he just keeps losing. I just hope there will be a day where he understands this and tries to communicate well with others and with Izumi who clearly has an interest in him.
It sucks that the boot camp was short-lived due to Rin’s sprain, but at least we know what to expect the next time they decide to hold one. Will they get more people the next time? Will Kyouya and Rin get together by the next camp? Will there even be another boot camp? What are your thoughts on this episode?
