Lecture 7: HITSVILLE, USA. Now known as the Motown Museum, 2468 West Grand Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan. A lot of musical magic was made here, once upon a time. Motown grew so rapidly in the 1960s that, before long, Berry Gordy purchased another seven houses in the neighborhood, and would eventually buy the huge Motown Mansion in Detroit’s  Boston–Edison Historic District, before relocating to Los Angeles. But this house on West Grand Boulevard is where the dream began.

On April 14, 1960 Berry Gordy incorporated Motown Records in Detroit. By the end of the decade, the Motor City was known as “Hitsville USA” as R&B officially separated from rock and roll and began to blossom as it’s own genre. Hear the music of TheCity in the 1960s.
