Asian and Pacific Islander (and diaspora) singers of Western classical music: a list that may actually be slightly more complete than its predecessors
The reason I say that — and why most of these artists are still with us — is that this is a fairly recent phenomenon. Still, I’m bound to have missed some. This list includes East, South, and North Asia; the region sometimes known as Central Asia will get its own list.

I Am Hera Review!
Tumblr media
Album title: I Am Hera (more info here)
Singer: Hera Hyesang Park
Label: Deutsche Grammophon (DG)
Release date: November 2020
 Rating: 5/5 Hotteok’s
Tumblr media
Summary: A debut album by soprano Hera Hyesang Park. The album includes songs written by Gluck, Pergolesi, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Puccini, Bellini, and especially, two Korean songs by Joowon Kim and Un-Young La.
No content warnings apply.
Note: I’m not that knowledgeable in classical music so I won’t be commenting on any musical technicality or quality in the review, but rather, will be focusing more on introducing the artist and talking about the impact the album had on me personally.
Review: As many other people did, I spent most of 2020 alone in my apartment. To pass time, I tried to stream many virtual live events, ranging from book readings and workshops to ballet and musical performances. Among them was a live concert by Hera Hyesang Park to celebrate her signing with the classical music record label Deutsche Grammophon (DG). Unfortunately, the event is not available for replay but DG did post one song from the event on their Youtube page, if you’re interested in listening.
The classical music sphere is heavily centered around white musicians in Europe and the field has a long way to go to be inclusive. Hera is the first Korean singer to sign with DG (and the second Korean musician to sign with DG; the first was pianist Seong-jin Cho) and I’m so proud of her. The fact that she is trying to be herself, as her album title “I Am Hera” suggests, is hopeful to me. She said in an interview that when she first went to the US, she tried to assimilate and act like an American, but she realized that she needs to love her own identity. She picked the album title from that transformative experience. It’s something that most expats in the U.S., including myself, can relate to.
Tumblr media
Besides the traditional classical music by Gluck, Pergolesi, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Puccini, and Bellini, the album also includes two Korean songs: Like the Wind That Met with Lotus (연꽃 만나고 가는 바람같이) and Psalm 23 (시편 23편). In DG’s 120+ years of history, it is the first time that Korean songs were included. It was refreshing and exciting to see Korean songs representing our existence, in the same album with songs by classical artists whom people conventionally think of. At the live event I mentioned earlier, she sang Like the Wind That Met with Lotus and another Korean song, Leaning On Time (시간에 기대어). I couldn’t find a video of Hera singing it, but here is one sung by Haewon Lee. It’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard and when I saw non-Korean-speaking listeners commenting on the beauty of these songs during the live event - I must say, I welled up a bit.
I would like to briefly note something about Like the Wind That Met with Lotus. It is a poem made into a song. The original poem was written by Jeong-ju Seo (서정주). He worked for Imperial Japan while Korea was colonized by Japan and also wrote poetry praising Japanese Imperialism. This serves as another reminder that while I was happy that she chose to include Korean music to be able to express her true self, complicated, painful, and unresolved bits of history are entangled in that song. It makes me think about the work that needs to be continued regarding decolonization and reparation.
I will leave you with Hera’s performance in a traditional Korean house. Her singing Purcell in a place surrounded by the kiwa architecture is a quite pleasant juxtaposition.
Happy listening,
CoreaMod

This free concert, a special edition of DG’s Yellow Lounge streamed from Berlin, features four outstanding young stars from DG’s family of artists - Nadine Sierra, Magdalena Hoffmann, Bomsori and Hera Hyesang Park. Their collective programme mines a rich seam of works by women composers, embracing everything from songs and salon pieces by Clara Schumann and Amy Beach to Grażyna Bacewicz’s Oberek No.1. The performances will be enhanced by visuals provided by Trial and Theresa, a feminist VJ collective with a focus on the presence of women in the electronic arts scene.

-[Hyerin's ships with Ateez
Tumblr media
Seonghwa + Hyerin
A.k.a 2Park, HyeHwa, RinSeong, HyeSeong: These two are the 'mothers' of Ateez. If they aren't mothering their members, they're mothering each other. Despite being the same age, atiny have pointed out that Seonghwa tends to act like her younger brother when he's tired. Just as partners tend to copy each other, the pair both share Seonghwa's trademark judgemental stare, their reactions in sync a majority of the time. Not overly affectionate with each other, they have been spotted on vlive and group content to be comfortable cuddling against each other.
Hongjoong + Hyerin
A.k.a RinJoong, HongRin, HyeJoong: Ateez's resident producers and the avid song cover duo. These two are most seen joining each other's vlives, glancing at the other with - as pointed out by atiny - 'pride and admiration in their eyes '. As the first few trainees to join KQ, Hyerin and Hongjoong share many early memories of learning from Eden. Helping each other with their covers, it isn't a rare sight to see their names in the credits for their cover videos. Skinship isn't a prevalent part of this ship, but it has been seen that the pair own a matching set of earrings.
Yunho + Hyerin
A.k.a YunRin, HyeHo: If Yunho is Ateez's puppy, Hyerin is the group's wolf cub. The pair are always dancing together - if not together, they're watching the other with a fond smile. Fond of Yunho's enthusiasm, Hyerin tends to allow the younger male to hold her wrists and play with her arms in the mirror during practice. Skinship is almost constant when they're put together, Yunho back hugging Hyerin and resting his head on her shoulder.
Yeosang + Hyerin
A.k.a SangRin, RinSang, YeoRin, HyeSang: There's never a missed beat with this pair. If it's not Yeosang roasting his members on TV, it's Hyerin. Atiny have coined these two as 'The Twins' due to their close birthdays and matching Zodiac signs. Often firing back at each other in a relay to the amusement of fans, these two are also very soft with each other. Braiding the ends of Yeosang's hair whenever she's left to her own devices, Hyerin regularly admits how often she'll sleep in Yeosang's bed, falling asleep much easier
San + Hyerin
A.k.a RinSan, HyeSan: As Hyerin often states, San is 'her son'. This sweet pairing is never far from an endearing moment together or chaos that results in a plethora of memes. If it isn't WooSan cuddling, it's RinSan huddled together as they use their phones - until San gets bored and watches Hyerin. With Hyerin's love of coffee and sweet drinks and San's enjoyment of eating out, Hyerin's vlogs and tweets usually consist of the pair grabbing a bite to eat - Hyerin's treat as always.
Mingi + Hyerin
A.k.a HyeMin, HyeGi, RinMi: Anyone who wasn't aware that Mingi and Hyerin were groupmates would be forgiven for thinking they were a couple. Referring to each other with pet names more often than by name, the two rappers are very fond of hand-holding, using it as comfort. Due to their similar rapping styles, the two often switch parts on stage to the amusement of their fans. Turning to Mingi during their wins on stage, Atiny have taken to calling Mingi 'Hyerin's Comfort'
Wooyoung + Hyerin
A.k.a WooRin, HyeYoung: The 'Sunshine' and 'Sunshine Protector' duo. With more energy than Hyerin, it's not rare to see Wooyoung being energetic with Hyerin watching his shenanigans fondly nearby. Enthusiastic performers, the two often work on facial expressions and perfecting their dancing together. Not big on obvious displays of affection, Hyerin often allows Wooyoung to initiate any skinship; often being tight hugs or him laying in her lap while she keeps herself busy.
Jongho + Hyerin
A.k.a JongRin, HyeJong: Ateez's 'least' (which is definitely not true-) affectionate members. Both being older siblings at home, Jongho and Hyerin tend to share an 'I'm done with life' look - often in the presence of Ateez's usual chaos. Showing their affection for each other through more, subtle, choices, the two have often been photographed falling asleep on each other's shoulders in the waiting room. Whenever the pair are caught being cute, the fandom has affectionately called them the 'cubs of Ateez'

Hera Hyesang Park · Kim: Like the Wind That Met with Lotus (2020)

Co-production with Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro del Maggio, Opéra national de Paris and Greek National Opera.
Tumblr media
ABOUT
“Marina Abramović has been fascinated by the life of the “Tigress”, as Callas was known, for decades. She has now developed the 7 Deaths of Maria Callas opera project, in which seven deaths on stage are recreated in exemplary form on the basis of the musical and scenic formative highlights of the respective operas – all arias that were immensely important for Maria Callas. In seven films and together with Willem Dafoe, Marina Abramović will die seven times and at the end of the performance, with the real death of Maria Callas in Paris in 1977, will be on the stage performing as herself. In addition to the well-known arias from the 19th and 20th centuries, Serbian composer Marko Nikodijević will compose music for the opera’s musical arrangement, and with it illustrate how Callas’s unconditioned love for her art never allowed a separation between the person on stage and the private person.“
