When I hear my name, I feel like I am my own country. I do not have my parent’s name but their blood runs through me like hyphens. Shout out to the fam addicted to addiction, the conception of greed, for the feeling a body has when it has too much. I know men on the block are full to the ends of their skin with sin. On the corners of my block, brothas rep their hood like nations would. Allegiance is the only name that binds. I pledge it like a President, one hand on the bible, the other dipped in blood. I’m faithful to my people with no god. Godless tribes deserve the shout out, the call to the hopeless. We have no church to burn. Shout out to the streets undone, the concrete that memorizes the word surrender. Shout out to the surrendered. You fail for us to fail easy. When I jog through rain I feel each bulb catch fire on me. Watch me sing bright with a somber song. Shout out to the women who’ve sung for me. I am a man with many songs but sing none. I want to acknowledge the homes I know, the brick frames with smoke in the interior, I want to give a shout out to the place that’s displaced. I do think in the world of Bridgerton, Kate will hyphenate her name. That Anthony would welcome it too. Understanding what “Sharma” and being called by her full name “Kathani” mean to her. A women of high society wasn’t allowed to have a lot in those days but she had her name and seeing as how Kate was intent on NOT finding a match for herself and staying unmarried instead being intent on making her own way in the world. Her own way as Kathani Sharma. Her name, a solid tangible piece of her parents. Seeing as how (in the show), Lady Mary kept her last name pre marriage, adding it to Mr Sharma’s (Sheffield Sharma), I don’t see why Kate wouldn’t do the same.

I’m reading a fic and it’s prompting me to think more about why Kate chose to go by Miss Sharma and not Miss Kate. Was it because she was older? Would Edwina have gone by Miss Sharma too had Kate not been there? Is Edwina “Miss Sharma” now until she marries? Lady Mary went by “Lady Mary” instead of “Lady Sheffield Sharma”. Was it for ease in communication? To reduce the link to scandal — of leaving the Sheffields to marry Mr Sharma? Hmmm?

I also wonder why Kate chose to go by Kate. Was it to protect herself? To protect her name from (possibly) being butchered by the ton? To anglicise her name? It was likely already an anglicised nickname. Edwina being Edwina and her nickname being Eddie and all (did I remember that wrong from the books?). Did she do it to keep it close to her? To keep what was HERS to herself?

Yes, in the book, she’s Kate because she’s Katherine but this is like MJ/Michelle stuff okay? I also remember Kate (books) preferring to be called Kate over Katherine. She’s not Katherine here, she’s Kathani and she’s epic. I love her. So, I’m going to sit and wonder what led her to choose “Kate” for the ton and I’m going to continue to hope that if her choice to keep “Kathani” to herself and her fam, that Anthony will call her “Kathani” in the privacy of their own home or just between them like a secret. Or if she chooses to step into the role as Kathani Bridgerton, that “Sharma” is used affectionately like when (cute) annoyed, “Kate” is her nickname with family etc.

Ya know, like when Lizzie Bennet has that whole convo with Darcy about what they should called each other. LIKE THAT YA KNOW??

Rita hadn't thought about moving back to the States. She'd gotten comfortable in Swynlake. It had easily become home once things in her personal life began to slot together nicely. She had things there that she hadn't ever thought she'd ever have. A husband she loved, three happy and healthy children, friends and family that stood by her side no matter what.

But then Dodger went back to New York. Then the rest of the gang followed. And when news that things were finally finished with Bill reached them, Rita knew that there was no keeping Roscoe from going back home. No matter how dark some of the memories were that came from there.

None of which mattered because while she had feared that some things would go back to the way that they were, Roscoe proved time and time again that his ideals had shifted. That things weren't going to be the way they had been before. They had a family together now, more love than possible, and a future that was bright ahead of them.

It was crazy how easily New York City became home again. Once the kids were settled in school, Rita found work in a lounge that didn't exploit her or the other girls that performed. She could come and go as she pleased (though she had a feeling that was more thanks to her hyphenated last name than anything else) and she could perform whatever she liked.

Though, she still kept in touch with her people back in Swynlake and when she was told about the gala for the MMLA she knew it was the perfect excuse to go back and visit everyone. More than aware that the only person really excited about the trip is her daughter, Rita still plans to enjoy herself and catch up on all the hot goss she's missed out on over the years.

To the anon who talked about changing last names, I kinda wonder how relevant that would be in 2022? People change their names for all kind of reasons of course, but if there isn’t any negative/traumatic link and you choose not to have kids idk why a name change would be needed after a wedding. Unless it’s just bc it’s Christian tradition or something. Can someone enlighten me? For eg Sarah is changing your name something you would want ?

I think it's become more common/accepted to keep one's last name by choice after marriage. Of my friend group who are married, it's actually a 50/50 split between those who kept their last name and those who took on the last name of their new spouse. I personally know only one friend who has hyphenated. I think the choice to have children can weigh into it (having a unified last name makes identification papers, passports, future travel, etc easier).

There's no wrong choice, only the choice that feels right for you/your fam.
