some words about yellow and autumn, please?
“It’s exactly the time of year at which everything is mustard-crested. It’s the most absolute of autumns.” (Sara Baume, Spill Simmer Falter Wither)
“The light is golden and the trees are lit from within. In autumn, you feel beloved by the earth, all its inhabitants, for entire afternoons, sometimes.” (Ellen Welcker, ‘Any Grieving Mammal’)
“October, crisp, misty, golden October, when the light is sweet and heavy.” (Angela Carter, The Magic Toyshop)
“Certain afternoons in early fall, waterfalls of immaterial gold, the transformation of this world, when everything loses its body, everything is held in suspense…” (Octavio Paz, ‘I speak of the city’)
“This is the light of autumn, not the light that saysI am reborn.[…]This is the light of autumn; it has turned on us.Surely it is a privilege to approach the end still believing in something.” (Louise Glück, ‘October’)
“The autumn trees gleam in the yellow moonlight, in the light of harvest moons, the light which mellows the energy of labour, and smooths the stubble, and brings the wave lapping blue to the shore.” (Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse)
GUILDENSTERN: It’s autumnal.ROSENCRANTZ (examining the ground): No leaves.GUILDENSTERN: Autumnal - nothing to do with leaves. It is to do with a certain brownness at the edges of the day… Brown is creeping up on us, take my word for it… Russets and tangerine shades of old gold flushing the very outside edge of the senses… deep shining ochres, burnt umber and parchments of baked earth — reflecting on itself and through itself, filtering the light.” (Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead)
“In the mid days of autumn, on their eves    The breath of Winter comes from far away,And the sick west continually bereaves    Of some gold tinge [...]” (Keats, ‘ Isabella; or The Pot of Basil’)
“The light is in its element of Autumn. / Clear. With yellow leaves falling.” (Eavan Boland, ‘In a Bad Light’)
“I love the autumn-that melancholy season that suits memories so well. When the trees have lost their leaves, when the sky at sunset still preserves the russet hue that fills with gold the withered grass, it is sweet to watch the final fading of the fires that until recently burnt within you.” (Gustave Flaubert, ‘Novembre’)
“And like the maple that stood in our front yard with orange-yellow leaves that fell in fall like a shower of sunset, I’ve branched off (if you will).” (Janelle M. Williams, ‘The Way to Reach You’)
“look at that strange autumnlight as a scrap of (me)” (Anne Carson, Float)
“Now purple tints are all around;         The sky is blue and mellow; And e’en the grasses turn the ground        From modest green to yellow.” (Paul Laurence Dunbar, ‘Merry Autumn’)
“I find no other way of saying it: it is a luminous light. It is noble and subtle at the same time; never gray, never low (even when the sun is not shining), it is light-as space, defined less by the colors it imparts to things than by the eminently habitable quality it communicates to the earth. You must see this light (I would almost say: hear it, so musical is its quality) in autumn, which is the sovereign season of this country; liquid, radiant, heartrending since it is the last fine light of the year, illuminating each thing in its difference.” (Roland Barthes, Incidents)
“Autumn is a song. On nights of ‘steamed osmanthus flower’ it is like a flute melody played in a kitchen. In the daytime, it is a song sung by small children: ardent and familiar and clear.” (Fatima Mohideen)
“‘Light still brilliant, still still.’ It had been the most beautiful of summers into fall. No slap-red leaves, turning, but yellow, effusive.” (Sarah Greenslit, ‘What’s Not There’)
“October’s a blink of the eye. The apples weighing down the tree a minute ago are gone and the tree’s leaves are yellow and thinning. A frost has snapped millions of trees all across the country into brightness. The ones that aren’t evergreen are a combination of beautiful and tawdry, red orange gold the leaves, then brown, and down.” (Ali Smith, Autumn)

The Potter Wedding (Part 2/3)
Part 2 of 3
Part 1 here
Part 3 here
Warnings: Friend feels; Wedding Feels; FatherxDaughter Feels; SiriusxReader
Summary: Reader x Sirius at the wedding of Lily and James. Both realise that they are with the one they wish to marry, and eventually end up in an intimate proposal situation.
Tumblr media
You stiffened your back and caught your breath. Everyone was smiling at you as you walked towards the aisle, rose petals of pink and peach whirling around your feet as your long dress flowed around your ankles with each step. You smiled politely back at them, turning your head slightly to the left and right as you walked. You were glad that most of them were turning their attention back to the house above, watching eagerly for a glimpse of Lily.
As you stepped closer to the altar, you saw James standing in front of the aisle, a stupid massive grin on his face. You chortled back at him as he winked and gave a small thumbs up, his hair an unruly mess, his tux hanging perfectly on his broad shoulders. You shook your head slightly as he turned his attention behind you. James will be James. He looked handsome, and nervous, and cocky, and (most importantly) the happiest you had ever seen him.
You saw Peter standing on his tip toes, leaning on Remus for a better look down the aisle. His tux was bulging at the stomach, and already had a stain on the left lapel of his jacket. Remus kept pushing Peter off him. He looked unusually handsome and coy, all dressed up as he was. He smiled and winked at you. You smiled back. He, too, looked happier than you had seen him in a long time. It helped, you thought, that the full moon was 2 weeks away. You made a small wish in your heart at that moment that a cure for lycanthropy would be found someday, if only for the sake of his personal happiness.
As you heard the bridal march begin, you knew that Lily had started walking down the aisle. Your eyes fell on the tallest man standing right next to James. He was devilishly handsome, his dark hair falling gracefully around his beautiful face, and little butterflies fluttered in the pit of your stomach as his mysterious grey eyes locked with yours. You knew that he had watched every step you had taken from the moment you had walked out of the house. He was smiling gently at you, and you couldn’t help but smile back. Sirius Black was the love of your life, and as he stood there, you imagined him watching you this way on your own wedding day.
You came to a standstill on the left side of the alter, turning your body out to the crowd, but eyes never leaving those of Sirius.
“Beautiful” Sirius mouthed, winking at you.
“Stop it” you mouthed back, smiling incredulously at him. You shifted your eyes in Lily’s direction, indicating to Sirius to do the same. You both watched her reach the front of the aisle, tears streaming down her face as James sobbed from happiness. You couldn’t help dabbing at your own eyes as you saw the exchange of love between Lily and James. Mr Evans placed his youngest daughter’s hands into those of James Potters, cupping them both with his own.
“A better man she could not have chosen” Mr Evans chocked, clapping James on the back.
Throughout the ceremony, you stole glances with Sirius, smiling beautifully all the while. You both did your duty as Best Man and Maid of Honour; you holding the bridal bouquet and shifting Lily’s dress, Sirius offering the rings and taking James’ handkerchief… But there was something different in the way that Sirius was watching you during the proceedings that caused you to frown at him every now and again.
“You may kiss the bride!” The marriage officiator said, and as James and Lily lovingly kissed, the crowd clapped politely, a few cheers were heard, and Sirius continued to gaze at you.
As the day wore on, the newlyweds took photos with all their guests, cut the cake, and toasted with towers of pink champagne. The beautiful day turned into a warm autumn evening, the reception took place under a light pink tent draped with branches of sage and Lily flowers. Live fairies were dotting the tent as little pink and yellow lights, and a rustic harvest table had been enchanted to refill with a delicious offering of fresh breads, different cheeses, an array of cold meats, scrumptious vegetables and homemade pies.
You were too busy helping Lily with her dress, and keeping her hair and make-up perfect to notice much else of the wedding. Only when she sat down with James to eat did Sirius appear next to you.
“Come eat, my love.” He crooned, ushering you to the seat next to him.
“Ah, thank you! I’m starving,” You said, stuffing some bread and hummus into your mouth. “Woo kno’ gus’ wha’ I like.” You swallowed as Sirius laughed at you.
“Stop laughing. I’m hungry. It’s been a long day.”
“Yeah, tell me about it,” he said, grinning mischievously at you.
“What are you smiling like that for?” You asked, knowing all too well what he was thinking.
He didn’t answer for a while. He placed his hand absentmindedly on your bare shoulder, rubbing it gently. Despite his touch being innocent, you felt a tingling sensation start at the base of your spine. He was watching you again, his expression unreadable. He finally said “You look so beautiful tonight.”
“Thanks.” You replied, taking a sip of pumpkin juice and watching the other guests talking and laughing. You glanced at him quickly, his grey eyes meeting yours. “What are you thinking?”
He leaned forward and whispered gently into your ear “That I am the luckiest man here today.” He kissed your neck.
Tumblr media
His hot breath on your bare skin sent a wave of shivers over your body. “No, James is the luckiest man here today. How he got Lily to marry him is beyond me.”
“Y/N”, Sirius hushed, kissing you again. “I want to ask you something…”
You sat up as straight as a needle, stopping mid-chew. Sirius was never like this in public with you. You looked at him curiously. You were about to ask him to finish his question when you heard your name being called.
“Y/N!” It was Lily. She was laughing and pulling a chair to the middle of the dance floor. “It’s the bouquet toss! Come here and help me!”
“On my way!” You yelled back, quickly getting up from your seat. You glanced apologetically back at Sirius, who watched you with a gleam in his eye. James sat down next to him, grinning as he started to engage his best friend in conversation. You made a mental note to finish this discussion with Sirius later on in the evening.
(to be continued)
