most fucked up thing at my new job is there's only zero calorie sweeteners at the coffee station in the break room. three different kinds of zero calorie sweetener but no regular sugar because the assumption is that literally everyone is on a diet?

Humid.

The first thought that runs through Killua’s mind as his eyes flutter open and he peers through dark heavy lashes, moaning.

He’s cold. His turtleneck sticks to his skin uncomfortably, the remnants of the rain on his bare legs; Killua shivers as the cold air whips around and hits them.

Hot… his chest feels hot, and his head throbs... Killua draws his hands up to his head, resting a palm on each side of his face.

His skin feels like it’s on fire.

“Killua!”

He doesn’t register Gon gracefully jumping down, entering the shade of the tree like he’s been doing it his whole life; he probably has… weirdo, or even notice him get closer until he can feel Gon’s warm palm pushing up his soaked bangs.

“Mm. You’re still burning up.”

Burning up…?

Yeah, his skin is a little hot, but… he pulls his own hands away shortly after Gon drops his hand, letting them fall into his lap.

Gon peers out into the thunderstorm, shaking his head and shrugging his backpack off. He’s soaked to the bone, his jacket off, acting like he doesn’t even care…

“It’ll be a while ‘till we can get back. I don’t want to make your cold worse…”

Cold…?

Killua can’t even remember what happened. He tries to hum in response, but his nose gets clogged, and he coughs, his lungs burning and chest aching, his vision blurring.

He brings his hand up, hacking into his sleeve, staring at the disgusting mixture on his deep blue sleeve through half-lidded eyes, rubbing it into the ground.

"Easy..."

Gon picks up his jacket from the ground that Killua only now realizes he has been sleeping on, draping it over Killua's small frame, sitting down, and putting his backpack in his lap.

Killua tugs the jacket closer, even though it’s damp; shivering.

Gon starts pulling a bunch of stuff out, until he gets to a small fruit, smiling triumphantly.

He takes a small sharp rock and cuts a small piece off.

“Here. It has honey in it; it’ll help with your throat! At least ‘till Aunt Mito can make you some of her homemade tea!”

Killua stares warily at it; purple fruit? But his throat does feel so scratchy it makes him want to cough until he passes out, and he leans over to take it, losing balance.

Gon catches him by the shoulder, and Killua’s nose collides with Gon’s chest, pain shooting through it, which he ignores, breathing heavily and leaning heavier into Gon.

This seems so familiar…

“Easy.”

Gon is so warm…

Gon places the fruit near his lips, and he reluctantly eats it.

Bitter.

His face scrunches up in disgust, and Gon laughs, and he peers up at Gon, giving his best glare.

Gon gives him a genuinely sympathetic look.

“Sorry, sorry! It does taste a little bad! But your face! You look so cute.”

Killua’s face is already red, burning hot from the fever, but he swears he can feel his cheeks get even hotter.

Stupid Gon!

He huffs weakly, drawing his arms closer.

“You can sleep. I promise I’ll look after you!”

How’s he supposed to believe that…?

But his eyelids feel so heavy, and Gon is so warm, and Killua can feel the muscle of Gon's arm as Gon pulls Killua’s legs up into his lap, and-

Killua isn’t supposed to… isn’t allowed to feel safe.

But…

“It’s okay; you’re safe. I’ll protect you.”

His eyes shut.

Killua wakes up disappointingly alone.

Gon’s jacket is still over his shoulders, and he pulls it closer, whining.

Gon sheepishly rubs his neck.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to leave you.”

Gon packs up his supplies while Killua watches, still glowering, until Gon comes over and lifts Killua up, an arm under his legs, his fingers leaving a gentle yet firm grip on his shoulder.

Killua clings to Gon, face flushed, but leans into the contact, smiling into Gon’s chest.

Maybe being sick for once… won't be so bad.
