IRANIAN PRESIDENT AND FOREIGN MINISTER KILLED IN HELICOPTER CRASH, AYATOLLAH KHAMENEI DECLARES FIVE DAYS OF MOURNING

In a message issued by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Iranian leader declared five days of mourning following a freak helicopter crash on Sunday, May 19th, that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, leader of Friday prayers in Tabriz, Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Al-e-Hashem, and the Governor of East Azerbaijan, Malek Rahmati, along with members of the President's security team and his crew.

The wreckage of the President's helicopter was found by rescue crews in the early hours of Monday morning following an exhaustive search in extremely foggy weather.

President Raisi's convoy included three helicopters, with two of them carrying a number of ministers and officials that managed to land safely in the fog.

“In this bitter tragedy, the Iranian nation lost a warm-hearted, humble and valued servant,” Ayatollah Khamenei said in his statement, adding that President Raisi was a hard worker who never stopped working round-the-clock for the Iranian people despite facing intense push-back from "ill-wishers".

Khamenei further offered his condolences to the Iranian nation and approved Vice-President Mohammed Mokhber to take over the position of interim President and to work with members of the Iranian Parliament to prepare for new elections for President in the next 50 days.

Iran starts registration period for presidential election after Raisi’s death

Iran has opened a five-day registration period for candidates seeking to run in the 28 June presidential election to replace Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash earlier this month, Irish Examiner reports.

The election comes as Iran grapples with the aftermath of the May 19 disaster, with heightened tensions between Tehran and the US and protests, including over the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, sweeping the country.

While supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 85, retains ultimate authority to decide all matters of state, presidents in the past have tilted the Islamic Republic of Iran toward closer engagement or increased hostility with the West.

Individuals between the ages of 40 and 75 with at least a master’s degree will be registered as potential candidates within five days.

All candidates must be endorsed by Iran’s 12-member Guardian Council, a panel of clerics and jurists headed by Ayatollah Khamenei. The council has never accepted women or anyone calling for radical changes in the country’s governance.

Iranian president gives 'full support' to Putin in call

After a phone call between Putin and Raisi, the Iranian president's political deputy quoted the Iranian president in a tweet, saying "the Islamic Republic of Iran supports Russian sovereignty."

MOSCOW: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi gave “his full support” to Vladimir Putin during a telephone call, the Kremlin announced in a statement on Monday, two days after an aborted mutiny in Russia.

“The Iranian president has expressed his full support for the Russian leadership in connection with the June 24 events,” the Kremlin said in an announcement.

After a phone call between Putin and Raisi, the Iranian president’s political deputy, Mohammad Jamshidi, quoted the Iranian president in a tweet, saying “the Islamic Republic of Iran supports Russian sovereignty.”

According to the Iranian official, “President Putin explained the events related to the failed mutiny and insisted that such incidents cannot affect Russian sovereignty.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, reiterated on Monday that Iran “does not support any side in the war in Ukraine”, while the United States accuses Tehran of supplying drones to Moscow and of helping to build a factory to manufacture them, which Tehran denies.

Putin also received in the morning “support” from the emir of Qatar, according to another press release from the Russian presidency.
