"Adam the First"
So much of the story feels like a string of missed opportunities to delve deeper into the characters and themes, but I appreciate what this self-discovery drama is going for.
Writer / director Irving Franco‘s “Adam the First” is a film that wears its heart on its sleeve, offering an earnest and universal story that should resonate with most viewers. This rough around the edges drama has just the right amount of indie quirk to make it feel unique, but the amateurish writing and clumsy acting detract a bit from the dramatic impact. In this story about finding your…

facts about tissot since i’m now obsessed w him
• was born in Nantes! his birth name was actually Jacques Joseph Tissot, but by 1854 he was known as James Tissot.
• was friends with Degas, Manet and James McNeill Whistler (whom you may know bc of his relationship with Oscar Wilde)! he also studied under Flandrin and Lamothe (Degas was also a student of Lamothe).
• here’s a portrait of him by Degas ca. 1867-68
Tumblr media
• HE FOUGHT IN THE PARIS COMMUNE (though idk if he shared their ideals), as well as in the Franco-Prussian war as part of the defense of Paris.
• He was mostly famous for painting fashionable ladies decked in their best gowns (which you can tell)
• One of the most interesting periods in his life was during his relationship with Kathleen Newton. She was an Irish divorcee, and he met her around 1875-1876. According to her niece, they fell in love while he painted her portrait, and she went to live with him in 1877. They had “their own little literary and artistic circles” w people like Oscar Wilde, Charles Wyndham, Henry Irving, Mary Moore, Thomas Gibson Bowles, William Stone, etc. The servants called Kathleen “Madame Tissot”, despite them not being married. Kathleen called him Jimmie and he called her “petite femme” and “mavoureen” (form the Irish “mo mhuirnín”, meaning “my dear”).

he painted like a million portraits of her but here’s a few
In the late 1870s Kathleen contracted tuberculosis and died in Tissot’s arms on 9 November 1882, “with the ardent faith of a neophyte and the silent resignation of a saint.”

The Lithuanian-American artist Irving Norman was a social surrealist who painted large-scale and highly detailed critiques of contemporary life with hopes that viewers would consider the consequences of their actions and change their behavior. Influenced by the dire conditions of the Great Depression, his massive canvases feature armies of clone-like figures behaving in the clockwork manner in which they have been programmed. He moved from New York to Los Angeles in 1934 before helping to defend the Spanish Republic from the fascist Franco dictatorship. He survived the Spanish Civil War and in 1939 settling on Catalina Island off the Southern California coast, where he began drawing and painting from the atrocities he had witnessed. In 1940, he moved to San Francisco and had a solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Art two years later. He then traveled to Mexico City and saw the murals of Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros before moving to New York City to studying at the Art Students League from 1946 to 1947. He returned to San Francisco in the late 1940s. Because of his political and social engagement, Norman was under FBI surveillance for decades. From 1950s, in the wake of McCarthy's conspiracy theories and persecution of communists, his mail was monitored. The surveillance continued until 1974, despite the fact that he had brought successful legal action against the FBI's frequent interrogations and harassment with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union. In 1988, fire destroyed his home, studio, artwork, and personal papers.

Groucho Marx and Kitty Carlisle in A Night at the Opera (Sam Wood, 1935) Cast: Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx, Kitty Carlisle, Allan Jones, Sig Ruman, Margaret Dumont, Walter Woolf King. Screenplay: George S. Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind, James Kevin McGuinness. Cinematography: Merritt B. Gerstad. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons. Film editing: William LeVanway. Music: Herbert Stothart. Verdi's Il Trovatore is one of my favorite operas, but it only works if it's performed by a cast willing to give it their all. To see what I mean, try to find the live recording from the 1962 Salzburg Festival conducted by Herbert von Karajan and starring Leontyne Price, Franco Corelli, Ettore Bastianini, and Giulietta Simionato. Thrill to Price and Corelli in a duel of high notes, Corelli and Bastianini trying to out-ham each other, and Simonato camping the hell out of Azucena. That's what opera is all about and why it's such a natural target for the Marx Brothers. A Night at the Opera is not my favorite of their films, however. It was made after they left Paramount for MGM, where Irving G. Thalberg seemed determined to file down the team's rough edges, Louis B. Mayer didn't get their jokes, and the direction was assigned to Sam Wood, who earned his surname honestly. So we get an insipid romance between the opera singers played by Kitty Carlisle and Allan Jones, who are allowed to do the "Miserere" scene straight-faced, and one of those gooey musical interludes in which Chico and Harpo are allowed to charm a bunch of kids with their piano and harp playing. For many, the comic highlight of the film is the stateroom scene, in which much of the cast is crammed into a tiny space, but I'm afraid too many viewings have left me cold to it. But I will never grow cold to Groucho, who rises above all inanities. Any moment he's on screen cracking wise is golden. The rest ranges from silver to Wooden.
