Ch. 17: Highgarden
“You’ve not left your chambers,” the small voice of Floris enters the room.
Elyse faces the window, watching the afternoon sun bleed through the satin curtains. Floris walks across the floor, the sound of her slippers growing louder the closer she gets. The bed dips as she sits beside her sister.
Floris brings a hand to Elyse’s head, caressing the dark hair that matches her own.
“Let us go outside,” Floris begs, “get you some fresh air.”
Elyse does not answer, she continues to stare. Her dark hair is matted from sleeping all hours of the day. She does not know how long she has slept, the light bleeds through the window and then it fades. And then she closes her eyes again.
As Elyse sleeps, the realm descends into war.
“I am happy to see you have risen,” Lord Maceon says, greeting her as she enters the gardens.
Elyse looks toward the sky, as though hoping the familiar call of Vhagar will soon be heard. The call does not come. Nor does that of Vermax.
“Has Prince Jacaerys departed?” Elyse asks.
Her voice catches in her throat as though she has not spoken in a long while. She wets her chapped lips. Elyse has not had much appetite and has only consumed small pieces of bread and meat. Floris abandons her duties as the lady of Highgarden several times a day to hold water to her sister’s lips.
The gardens open up to a spacious grove of twisting ivory vines and white lilies that decorate them. The air is heavily perfumed with the scent of flowers, much reminding Elyse of her room at the Red Keep after Lord Maceon had bestowed her with gifts.
How different would it have been if the late King Viserys had lived through the night? If Elyse had made it to Highgarden and married Lord Maceon. The gods are mysterious indeed, in the way they work.
“He was needed on Dragonstone,” Maceon tells her, joining her in her stride.
Elyse is barely dressed. A simple shift and a thick wool cloak to keep the cool air from her skin. The Reach has begun to grow cold, another sign that winter was well on its way. Her black curls have been pulled from her face, as she finally allowed the lady’s maid to comb through her hair with expensive oils from the Free Cities.
And she has finally left her chambers. This pleases Lord Maceon.
“I see,” Elyse says, voice breaking.
He did not say goodbye, Elyse thinks to herself.
Though she supposes Jace must hate her now. The true wife of his enemy.
“Your sister requested those,” Lord Maceon says, attempting small talk by pointing to the ivy vines that swirl up an archway.
Elyse cracks a small smile at this, at memories of Floris knee-deep in her garden at Storm’s End. How she would trudge mud through the halls causing the Septa to scold her. Floris was always too bright a flower to keep in the Stormlands.
“We would never have made a good match,” Elyse tells him.
Lord Maceon looks at her, parts his lips to speak, but thinks twice before doing so. He watches Elyse, the melancholic look on her face as the wind blows through her. Maceon shivers in the breeze but Elyse does not tremble.
“Your sister is lovely,” Maceon tells her, “I do hope she shall be happy here.”
“How long have I been here?” she asks.
“A fortnight.”
Too long. Too long without Aemond’s embrace. Too long without Helaena. Too long without the children. Even the absence of Aegon’s jests leaves a hole in her heart.
“What goes on in the world?”
Maceon glances toward the ground as though debating whether or not to tell her.
“Your husband has eviscerated what was left of the Riverlands. From what I hear we are fighting a losing battle.”
A smile tugs at Elyse’s lips almost unconsciously. Maceon’s cheeks redden, surprised by her bloodlust.
“This pleases you?”
“News of my husband’s victories does please me, lord,” Elyse tells him.
“You consider massacre a victory,” Maceon snaps.
“You fault him though this was a war you started.”
“Mine?” he scoffs, “imagine my surprise when Prince Jacaerys landed at my gates.”
Elyse looks at him, a sneer on her pretty lips.
“You could have refused him,” she tells him.
“If I had refused him Prince Daemon would arrive next,” Maceon tells her, “and I doubt his offer would be as generous, nor as kind.”
“What was Prince Jacaerys’ offer?” Elyse questions.
“Avenging a slight,” Maceon tells her, causing Elyse to scoff.
“A slight,” she murmurs, walking away from him, “you wished for a Baratheon bride and you were afforded one. Your actions are those of a spoiled child.”
Maceon flushes at her words, the sharp tongue she hides. He had known nothing but her sweetness when he visited the capital. But long gone was the sweet summer girl who awarded him her favor at the Tourney of Fire. The girl who danced with him at the Harvest Feast.
“You are upset,” Maceon says, clasping his hands behind his back.
“I have been taken from my home,” Elyse snaps, “kept from my husband. What did you expect from me?”
Maceon meets her eyes.
“Gratitude,” he answers.
Elyse does not answer.
“I thought you wanted to marry me,” he tells her, honestly.
Elyse breaks away from his gaze.
“It does not matter what I wanted,” Elyse tells him, trying to avoid the discussion.
“Did you?” he presses.
Elyse does not look at him.
“No,” he answers her, “no I supposed that much upon your arrival here.”
Maceon turns to leave, walking a few strides away from her before pausing.
“You are a guest here, my lady,” Maceon tells her, “though I do hope not to see you again, outside of formal mealtimes.”
“You need not worry,” Elyse tells him, back facing him.
“Then I shall bid you a good day,” he tells her, disappearing back toward the castle.
Elyse stays out in the cold far longer than she should until her teeth are rattling in her skull and the tips of her fingers have turned blue. A lady’s maid comes to get her as the sun sinks lower into the sky, plops her in a steaming bath, and scolds her for her carelessness.
The water is nearly boiling, but Elyse barely feels it. Perhaps she herself has turned into a dragon at last, made to withstand the flames that lick against her.
Food is brought to her room, they know she shall not join them in the great hall while they sup. Tonight, Elyse feels her stomach rumble, the deep ache of hunger echoing throughout her frame. Aemond would want me to eat, she tells herself, dipping a piece of bread into the steaming stew. She chews slowly, the action feeling almost foreign to her.
Elyse sits like that for some time, until her lady’s maid clears her plate. She watches Elyse with sad eyes as she sinks into the mattress. Perhaps she shall sleep more. Perhaps that shall help.
The door to her chambers creaks open at the hour of the wolf.
“Elyse,” a voice calls from the darkness.
She sits up in bed and Floris closes the door behind her. She comes over to the bed and lays down some clothes. Her blue eyes are fearful as they meet Elyse’s.
“We do not have much time,” she tells her elder sister, “quickly now.”
Elyse doesn’t ask questions, she simply changes into the rough wool pants, and the shirt, and presses the cloak around her shoulders. She quickly laces up her boots as Floris sticks her head out the door, looking out into the corridor.
As Elyse gets up to join her, she slips her hand into hers. Floris guides her down the hall, and Elyse can feel her heart in her throat.
“Where are we going?” she asks, as Floris stops suddenly.
A few knights walk by, the sisters hidden behind a stone beam. Floris pressed her hand to her lips, motioning for Elyse to stay quiet. As the soft patter of their armor grows fainter, Floris begins to move once more, tugging Elyse along.
They continue through stone passageways until reaching the stables. A young squire stands with two horses, a sword strapped at his hip. Elyse looks at her sister.
“You ride southwest,” Floris whispers, pressing into Elyse her sheathed blade. Elenei. Aemond’s gift.
“Ride straight until you reach the river Honeywine,” she continued, “follow it then, until you reach Oldtown. It shan’t take but a day or two.”
“Oldtown?” Elyse asks, and Floris nods.
“Daeron is there,” Floris says, “your kin, he shall accept you.”
Daeron. Daeron is there. Elyse feels her heart beating hard in her ribs.
“They shall send someone after me,” Elyse says.
“I shall delay them as long as I am able,” Floris promises, “Gareth here shall accompany you.”
Elyse grabs her sister’s face in both hands, causing Floris’ eyes to widen. The soft flower of the Stormlands uprooted to flourish in the Reach. Perhaps she was tougher than Elyse anticipated. The blood of the storm kings flows through Floris as well, after all.
“Thank you,” Elyse says, kissing her sister’s forehead.
“Perhaps it can be stopped,” Floris says, kissing her sister’s cheeks, “before more bloodshed.”
Gareth holds his hands out to assist Elyse on her horse. She steps into his hand, looping her leg over the steed. As Gareth mounts his own ride, Elyse looks at her sister once more.
“I shall not soon forget this sister,” Elyse tells her.
Floris smiles at her, teeth glowing in the moonlight.
“Send word when you arrive,” Floris tells her, “and send word to your husband.”
Aemond, Elyse thinks, I am going to see Aemond again.
“I shall,” Elyse promises.
“Take care of her Gareth,” Floris tells the squire.
“With my life, my lady,” Gareth promises, ears turning pink.
“Go,” she tells them both, “go now!”
The horses are off the sounds of their hooves, the only noise in the darkness of night. The gates open and Elyse does not look back. She must not look back, only ahead, only towards Oldtown. Only toward Daeron.
Only toward the greens.
Only toward her way back to him.
note: hope you enjoyed it 💚 sorry for the wait/short chapter, as this one winds down I've been really focused on my other fics.

Reaping Hook, Chapter Twelve: Out of the Rain
“What have you been up to, Sooga?”
“...It’s a long story. One that we don’t have time for.”
“So give me the short story.”
A Sheikah teenager with uncontrolled powers, eerily resembling Sooga’s, poisoned by a mysterious illness. The “illness” in question are hands, by the way. And the teen is no ordinary Sheikah, but the chosen one of the village to protect the king and princess. Only the Yiga’s most hated enemy. No biggie, Elyse.
Summary: Sooga comes clean about all that he’s been up to lately. Plans are made, everyone is on board more or less. All seems a little too good, but Sooga’s worries finally break the light.
Word Count: ~2.8k
---
Esteemed Provost Fallow,
His Majesty, I heard, will be the first one to breach the Sheikah protocols, since the age of King Drake, some 10 thousand years prior. I cannot tell His Majesty what's best, (perhaps you may be better in his court) but I believe that some things are best left forgotten. What kind of horrors lie beneath that caked earth, awaiting to be breached like a dead whale on shore.
And when that near day arrives, I fear we will see another resurgence of that shadow of Hyrule. The Yiga Clan. Be prepared, and watch your back, as well as the backs of your kin. When one falls, we all do.
Sooga peeled the letter away, gritting his teeth at the sound of crinkling, dried paper sticking to another. His mind filled in the blanks with the context he had to mull on;
Everyone in the Clan was there when King Rhoam was crowned. They were there when Queen Zelda Persephe died. Mysterious circumstances, they said, and left it at that. Contrary to belief, the Yiga Clan had nothing to do with Persephe's death. Not that time, at least.
Back to Rhoam...He had made a name for himself like many of the royals before; The prohibition of Sheikah technology remained divine law. But his daughter, Zelda Ivy, was more inclined to that ancient history. Sooga had even heard they were instating a new research facility for Sheikah technology.
"Hmph," Sooga clicked his tongue at his own thoughts--He wondered who the credit for unearthing the buried tech truly went towards; Was the cranky old man having second thoughts, or was his daughter too stubborn to let sleeping dogs lie?
Sooga uncovered another letter, and carefully unfolded it, kicking himself for his messiness in retrieving the letters. He should have killed Rowley a little more to the left.
Lord Rowley,
I share many of your fears and worries about His Majesty’s decision. Though it’s said that the Sheikah are supposed to protect the kingdom---divine duty, as ours is the upkeep of our divided sanctions. Yet I cannot keep my eyes away--our past king to keep us safe from Calamity. That foul clan is-----if something is to fall, they are surely the reason. I don’t trust the Sheikah….
The letters were faded and ink smeared too much to read.
Sooga poured through the pages again before reluctantly gathering them up into a pile of crinkly paper. As much as he hated the idea of bothering Master Kohga, someone had to make sense of it all. The date of the letters indicated they were received by the late nobleman Rowley two weeks ago. The night that Sooga completed his mission.
The Yiga would be safe for the next week, it seemed. But time was flimsy and fickle, Sooga knew. What they think is comfort in the night could be the shadow of a trap.
Rubbing a hand over his face, Sooga pushed back from his desk and reached for his swords to tie back to his waist.
He'd have to fill the rest of the mentors in on his findings. Again. But this time, he realized with a quiet groan, he’d have to talk to Tulsi, the footsoldier mentor. Tulsi always creeped him out.
“Sooga? Sooga!”
Elyse stepped into their shared room, and with a sudden fury, she threw back the curtain-door and marched in. “Where have you been?!”
It had only been a few hours, right? A day or two, yeah? Sooga’s silence as he tried to think back to the last time he had left the Hideout only made Elyse shake her head in disbelief.
“Are you shitting me? No one has seen you for…For at least three days! You got your new sword and dipped, you dipshit! You have forgotten all of your responsibilities, and you are about to answer to Master Kohga if you do not show up for at least one of them today.”
Sooga blinked. “Apologies, Elyse. I have been…It is a long story. And I…” He trailed off. He had no idea what he was supposed to be doing, and Elyse took in an explosive breath.
“You’re supposed to be teaching a class, idiot! Myself, Lareina, Adriel, Tulsi…” She counted everyone on her fingers. “And Adriel’s been covering your spot for every day you’ve been absent. Three. Days. How much longer do you think we can explain this?”
“Apologies, Elyse.” Sooga said again, wearily. “However, I did not forget that I started something within Hyrule Castle, and I intend to finish it. It involves the entire Clan. That’s where I have been this week.”
Elyse, hands on her hips, her shoulders slowly lowered. She tilted her head, her annoyance and irritation burning out. “At least you weren’t slacking.” She sighed. “I’m…sorry for yelling. Have you made any progress on it?”
Sooga gestured to the letters, his mind running to other thoughts. “In an unorthodox way, yes. One that will make sense in the future.” He began. “The five of us. After training.” He decided, and Elyse stared at him.
“What have you been up to, Sooga?”
“...It’s a long story. One that we don’t have time for.”
“So give me the short story.”
Elyse blocked Sooga’s way out, her shoulders tensed again. The two of them stared at each other through their masks. Elyse waited for an explanation, fingers drumming on her waist expectantly, and Sooga was debating on whether or not he should. How could he sum up the past few days without sounding completely ridiculous? Fabricated?
A Sheikah teenager with uncontrolled powers, eerily resembling Sooga’s, poisoned by a mysterious illness. The “illness” in question are hands, by the way. And the teen is no ordinary Sheikah, but the chosen one of the village to protect the king and princess. Only the Yiga’s most hated enemy. No biggie, Elyse.
“Well?”
Sooga pressed his hands together-
“Sooga!”
-And he teleported away.
"That is all for class today." Sooga lowered the practice sword, and returned a bow that the few students had given him. "Continue practicing your positions; Partner and make use of the sparring room."
A few chuckles and murmurs went around between the six or seven students. Sooga blinked, and pursed his lips, but let it slide.
As the classroom filed out, familiar faces filed in one by one. Adriel swiped a wooden stick left behind, brandishing it at Sooga with a playful jab. "En guard, Sooga! Eh, eh?" He posed like a Hylian knight, snickering at the exaggerated movements. Elyse walked in behind, scoffing.
"Are you going to teleport away again?"
"Ah, he's gotten the hang of it, finally?" Adriel replied. Elyse crossed her arms.
“Sooga’s only been avoiding my questions, like he’s been avoiding training.” Elyse’s disdain could be heard loud and clear. Adriel looked over at Sooga with a grin in his voice.
“Now, that’s no fun, Sooga. Is that what this meeting is for? To tell us all the gossip~”
“I will, but-”
“Did anyone invite Tulsi?” Lareina asked.
“I did, she scuttled away, said she had to feed Stella.” Adriel responded quickly, before turning his head back to Sooga. “Soooo…We can get started early and fill Tulsi in later. What have you been doing that’s so much more important, Sooga?”
Sooga crossed his arms with a grunt. “You must all swear secrecy. Right now. Hands in front of you.”
The three of them glanced at each other, and Sooga knew this was not how they envisioned it would begin. But Sooga closed two eyes and opened three; He needed to know they weren’t lying as they promised.
Sooga took a deep breath, took a seat down on the mats, and began.
“There is talk that the king will begin excavations around Hyrule. For buried Sheikah technology. Knowing the history of the last Calamity, there is buried technology here in the desert.”
The room was quiet between them. Even Adriel had nothing to say, chin in his hand, attention on Sooga.
“We need guards in and around the village and the hideout.” Sooga explained, and Elyse held up a hand to stop him from going any further.
“Does Master Kohga know about this?” She asked, and seemingly read his mind. “We can’t keep this from him.”
“There’s not enough information.” Sooga replied. “Rumors and gossip is all that’s in those letters, but there is some truth in the talk. Infiltrating the castle again is my only hope to gain more insight. To know exactly when, how, and where it’s going to happen.”
“We can’t have another situation like Faron.” Elyse announced all of their fears, confirmed by head nods. “I didn’t want to pursue it, but…I see now that I need to put my fears aside.”
Silent footsteps came up behind Sooga, and he closed his eyes to hold back a sigh. “Welcome, Tulsi. Did you finish feeding the spider?”
“Her name is Stella. And…Yes. Sorry for my absence.” She said, and Sooga braced himself for another jab. But Tulsi moved around him, and folded her long legs down to sit on the empty mat between Sooga and Lareina. “I have already heard, no need to fill me in. I will train the footsoldiers.”
Lareina lifted her head, quiet the whole time. “I can handle the investigation.” She looked at Sooga. He almost did a double-take. He had no doubt in Lareina’s abilities, but…
“I thought you said you were not a good liar.” Sooga said. Lareina turned her gaze down.
“That’s true, but…I want to help. I can learn.”
“Elyse and I can take up guard duty.” Adriel shrugged. “But that means you’ll have to take up training, Sooga.”
“Very well.” Sooga nodded. But something lingered on his mind. “There is one more thing that I have discovered. It seems the royals do not trust the Sheikah. And I….I have met one that was exiled from the castle, it seems. The way the old Sheikah was exiled long ago.”
The others all stared at Sooga, Elyse being the first one to whisper, “What?!”
“A young kid. I found him far away from the castle, farther than any castle Sheikah has ever gone. They are usually bound to the king or princess, but this one was injured outside of the Highlands.”
“A spy, then.” Elyse snapped. “Did you ever think of that?”
“Of course I did.” Sooga responded. “But I know how to detect intentions. He shares the same curse as I do. He’s had multiple chances to betray me, and I have had ample times to betray him.”
“Aaaand you’re friends now?” Adriel guessed, deadpan.
Tulsi tilted her head, listening intently to Sooga.
“You know as well as I do that the Sheikah and Yiga are closely related. I am not heartless, Adriel. He was attacked by a monster we’ve never seen before in the Tabantha fields. It has left him with a poison that only grows worse every night. If he were a spy, he’d have returned by now, or been retrieved. No one has come.”
“I want to see them.” Tulsi spoke up, every word clicking in sound. “If they are Blademaster size, then you two can work it out amongst yourselves. But if they are Footsoldier size, I will be the judge.”
Oh, no…Sooga held back a long and weary sigh. “Fair enough.” Sooga braced a hand on his knee. “Are we all at an understanding?”
“Adriel and I will take a few students to begin guard duty. You and Lareina will work on infiltration. Tulsi will continue training, and apparently have one more student.” Elyse rolled her eyes at the last part.
With that, Lareina, Adriel and Elyse all filed out one by one, to work on their next tasks for the night. Tulsi did not leave, instead unfolding herself as Sooga stood. When she stood, she towered over him with her height alone. The decor of her mask never helped, and neither did the fuzzy tarantula walking across her shoulders.
“Your son?” Tulsi asked, and Sooga did a double-take on that.
“Wha- No!”
“Only a question.” Tulsi giggled- A chalky, gritty laugh, and her spider--Stella--Crawled up the sides of her mask to rest on her head. “I want to meet them.”
“Why?”
Tulsi stared at Sooga. Better not to ask again. Sooga sighed, and nodded begrudgingly. “Fine. Fine…”
He just hoped Kiso was where Sooga had left that morning. But something wavered inside of him that hinted otherwise. Call it a hunch, or…
“Do you hear that?” Tulsi froze.
Sooga stopped, and Tulsi cocked her head to the side, farther back as she turned her head side to side. The commotion grew louder; Young voices arguing, shrieking, yelling.
That bad feeling grew. Sooga and Tulsi glanced at each other, and walked at a brisk pace through the halls. They followed the noise until Sooga rounded the corner, hand on his sword.
“What is going on here?!”
Kurre stomped her way past two nervous footsoldiers trailing along, her hand wrapped tightly around Kiso’s wrist with an iron grip that he couldn’t let go of. It didn’t stop him from trying, though, and the sight gave Sooga an immediate headache. Kiso’s feet dug back, but Kurre’s grasp was stronger; She was literally dragging him behind her like a ragdoll, and Kiso growled at the two footsoldiers that unfortunately wandered too close. His face was shielded by a Yiga mask, he was dressed in traditional clothes of the culture.
He could have fit in seamlessly, if not for the ghastly, glowing miasma on his skin, now coiled around his fingers.
The footsoldiers immediately stopped and bowed to Tulsi and Sooga, nervously announcing their names in respect.
“Let me through.” Kurre demanded. “I’m going to see Master Kohga.”
“Can you please explain to me the meaning of this?” Sooga gestured to Kiso, and he tried yanking his arm away again.
“I’m fine!”
“He’s NOT fine. He collapsed in the street. His blood is infected-”
“I’m FINE.”
“-And the corrosion has grown worse since last night. I have no references to treat this, and the other doctors in town are a waste of time. I am taking him to Master Kohga.”
Tulsi leaned down, watching Kiso’s hand flailing. “How terrifying it must be.”
She raised her head as Kiso moved again, quickly joining his hands to teleport with Sheikah magic. A blue flame erupted from his palms, and combusted with a loud pang, and Kurre flinched- Enough for her grasp to loosen, and Kiso tore away, stumbling back into the footsoldiers.
Everything happened within a matter of seconds.
“Woah!” They shouted, and caught him easily, and Kiso’s mask flipped up for a brief second. Sooga’s mouth fell open as he saw the corrosion had taken over half of Kiso’s face, turning his left red eye into something monstrous; He saw yellow, red, a sharp pupil and the swirling poison before the mask fell again, and Kiso grabbed at his chest.
He saw Kiso’s third eye alight.
Kiso’s gaze whipped upwards to the walls in panic, and Sooga followed; There was nothing there, but Kiso tore himself from the footsoldiers grip and scrambled farther into the dim hall.
“Sooga, it’s-!” Kiso shouted, before his words were cut off with a choking gasp. His back flew to the adjacent wall and was pinned. His head lifted as if something were strangling him. Tulsi snapped at the footsoldiers and they nodded and took off.
“What is going on, Sooga?!” Kurre shouted, and Sooga quickly removed his own mask as he sprinted forward.
Sooga closed his eyes, reaching out to Kiso, and finally saw what the Sheikah did.
All the warm lights in the room bursted with a wailing scream; A bloody creature had its long hand wrapped around Kiso’s neck, and the color of the poison matched the creature near perfectly.
Something like blood poured down from the walls too quickly, taking shape as another hand-like creature, one with a single eye darting around before landing on its fresh target.
“Help….Me…” Kiso wheezed.
Sooga tore his gaze away and moved to press his palm against Kiso’s forehead; To make it all stop like the last time. But something unleashed and a flash of red across his vision made Sooga shout, and he felt his body crash into a stack of boxes nearby.
Someone shouted; He couldn’t tell who.
Long fingers grabbed underneath his arms and lifted, and Sooga fought against the urge to elbow a monster in the face, but Tulsi’s scarf stopped him from starting a fight.
He saw Kurre kneel down beside Kiso, hands reaching for his neck.
“WHAT is GOING on here?!!”
Kiso let out a gasp, and then a rough cough as he crumpled to the floor in Kurre’s arms. Sooga tried to stand before his legs and brain connected, and Tulsi held him afloat by his arms.
“Ah,” She said with a tense voice. “Good evening, Master Kohga.”
Oh, fuck.

Felivy - The Choice
Soooo after a solid week of constant gushing about this au with @whumpopology I decided to try writing a bit of it! I'm uh pretty much completely obsessed with this au at this point, the amount of brainstorming we've done is incredible and soooo much fun.
Very brief context: AU where Felicia and Ivy both end up at Volkan's mean man estate together. The girls bond, Volkan is mean, the teams try to find them. Volkan decides to spice things up, contacts the teams and tells them they can choose one girl to have sent home and he'll keep the other. This is the timeline where they choose Ivy to come home.
cw: drugging, noncon kiss/touch, general noncon implications (none happens), whumper pov. ao3 link here.
---
The girl was strapped into a chair, thick leather cuffs tight on wrists that strained against the imprisonment. Even with the needle still in her arm, the drug coursing through her bloodstream, she fought; she had fought from the moment he first showed her just how he planned to transport her back to her team.
Red, Harrison had called her, for the striking color of her thick curls, but her hair color wasn’t enough to set her apart here. That fighting spirit, though; that was something his healer lacked, a tenacity bordering on feral that kept things interesting in a way Felicia couldn’t. And yet all it took was one wandering touch, one comment dripping with innuendo, one look, and she fell apart. Beneath all her bluster and bravado, Ivy was a scared little girl, and he was happy to remind her of that every time.
Her head began to droop and he thought that was it, until she snapped back to full alertness with fresh fire in her eyes. “You’re—” Her words were slurred, the effort to get them out visible in her face. “You’re fucking sick.”
He smiled and inclined his head in acknowledgement. “You should relax,” he said, and just to make sure she couldn’t relax, he leaned over her where she sat, one hand rising to brush strands of hair from her face. “Just let this happen. Next thing you know, you’ll be waking up in your boyfriend’s arms.”
“Nuh—” Despite the determination blazing in her eyes, she shuddered. A thin sheen of sweat broke out across her forehead, and he imagined he could see the drug working its way through her body, slowing her nervous system until she succumbed. Yet she still fought it; she couldn’t not, not with the needle still in her, and the knowledge that there wasn’t a single thing she could do to stop him from taking anything he wanted.
He leaned in for a kiss, and she was still awake enough to snap at him. Pulling back with a grin, he watched the terror dancing in her eyes, drank in the soft hitch of her breath as his hand caressed her cheek before traveling down further. His second kiss dipped lower, lips tracing the curve of her neck, sucking hard enough to bruise until he pulled a weak sob from her. Her pulse was racing beneath his tongue; every touch from him would send the drug through her body faster, which would make her more and more vulnerable to his touch. A delicious feedback loop of her suffering.
He lifted his head to meet her gaze, and the fire he’d seen there moments before was snuffed out. She was breathing heavily, eyes glimmering with unshed tears, mouth working as if she wanted to speak but couldn’t push the words out. He took her in another kiss and she whimpered against him, and god, he was going to miss this. Her fear was so different from Felicia’s, tinged with frustration at her own helplessness, and he could spend months drawing it out, showing her again and again that she was small and weak and nothing. But he had made a deal, and he was a man of his word. Better to leave her a sweet memory to remember him by, then.
When he pulled back from the kiss, he let his hand drift lower, until his thumb fretted with the fastenings of her pants. He hadn’t thought she could become more despairing than she already was, but at that touch she let out another sob, her head shaking weakly, slurring out words that might’ve been stop, please, no, don’t. He didn’t particularly care what they were. Fingers deftly undoing the button of her pants, other hand rising to press a harsh thumb into the bruise he’d kissed into her, he took her mouth in his one more time. She had no resistance left, and his tongue touched hers, his teeth dragging along her lower lip as he tasted her once again.
Her cry left her in a rush of air, and she slid into oblivion.
He studied her face, hands still on her body. In sleep, her features softened, the panic and desperation of moments before dulled to the slightest downward curve of her lips. So different from the wild thing who’d spat blood in his face, laughed under the threat of his knife, fought against him with everything in her. So much more fitting for the weak, terrified girl she became whenever he began to undress her, the lost thing he knew she was deep inside.
Refastening her pants, he took his hands from her body and began undoing the leather cuffs holding her in place. She had somewhere she needed to be, and it wouldn’t do for her to be late.
***
Felicia blinked, and stared at the bare white wall of her room, and fought a losing battle with her emotions.
One of us is going home. Volkan had dropped that bomb on them, and then dragged them off to their separate rooms before they could fully process. Before they could think to ask a single question. Before they could say goodbye.
She couldn’t hope. She couldn’t dare to hope, because if she went home, that would mean Ivy was staying here, and if Ivy stayed here alone she would be dead within the week.
She couldn’t hope, because she wouldn’t be strong enough to survive if her hope shattered and Ivy went home and she was left here, alone, with him.
There was no solution; only branching paths that ended in different flavors of heartbreak. Even when he offered them freedom, he twisted it into a weapon against them. Her heart raged against the unfairness of it all, and she crushed that feeling down, closing herself off, a few stray tears leaking from eyes squeezed shut.
The door to her room creaked open and she gripped the edges of the cot she sat on. He filled the frame, silhouetted against the hallway lights. She couldn’t bring herself to look at him, and yet she knew she had to. His expression was unreadable. Maybe she just didn’t want to read it.
“Come with me,” he said, and walked away without waiting for a response. She rose and followed him.
He brought her to his lounge, all dark leather and polished wood and a fire crackling in the hearth. At a gesture from him, she sank into the couch and he poured two glasses of amber liquor, handing one to her. He sat across from her, and in his eyes she saw that look, that fucking look that meant he was savoring the anticipation of breaking her down in some new way, and that was how she knew to prepare herself a heartbeat before he said, “Why do you think they chose her over you?”
She pressed her lips into a thin line and willed herself not to feel. From the moment she had woken up in his office, some part of her had always known she was going to die here. This changed nothing. At least Ivy was safe. She could take this.
He gestured at the glass in her hand, the drink within untouched. “Drink. It’ll help you relax.” She stared through him, setting the glass on the table without a word, and he took a sip of his own liquor. “I just want to talk tonight. I know you must have a lot of mixed feelings right now.”
She shifted her gaze to look him in the eye, and his face crinkled with a genuine smile. “I wish I could’ve been there for the discussion,” he mused. “What do you think was the deciding factor? What was it that pushed them over the edge, made them realize that Ivy was worth more than you?”
He wasn’t going to let up. She bit down the urge to say they made the right choice—self-deprecation was only playing into his hands. And she couldn’t do it, couldn’t dwell on what sort of conversation must have taken place, so she said, “I don’t know.”
“No theories at all?” He raised a skeptical brow. “You have no idea what might’ve led your girlfriend to look me in the eye and tell me that she was choosing to leave you here with me in favor of a stranger?”
Elyse. Her face flashed in Felicia’s mind, and shit, a few tears welled up before she could close herself off to the feeling, and then her chest ached with longing and grief and despair, and her fingers dug into the leather of the couch as her breath hitched in a sob, and then another.
Volkan shushed her with a faux-soothing hum, his hand like fire against her skin as he tucked her stray strands of hair behind her ear. “I’m sorry. I know this must hurt.” Through the haze of tears, the smirk on his face was infuriating. “If it helps, I think their choice makes sense.”
“Nothing about this makes sense, and you know that, you—” Now that she’d started, the sobs kept coming, racking her body with shudders. “You know, because you rigged this fucking game from the start, because that’s what you do, you—”
“Shhh.” He pressed a finger to her lips as he shushed her this time, and she flinched. “You’re getting emotional. Try to think about this logically. I’m sure your team did when they made their decision.” He sipped his drink again, considering. “Ivy’s a strong girl. A much better fighter. She doesn’t just roll over and submit at the first threat of pain. Although,” and his smile turned mocking, conspiratory, “you and I both know she’s not as tough as she likes to pretend. For a girl with two boyfriends, she sure fell apart quickly as soon as I—”
“You don’t know a goddamn thing about her,” Felicia lashed, stomach churning. Her skin warmed with the memory of Ivy’s touch, the only kind thing about this place. Ivy’s beautiful fierceness as she fought Volkan in every way. Ivy’s smile, and her tears, and her whispered promises in the night. “She’s—she’s so brave, and she’s good, and she’s not going to just leave me here.” Please.
Volkan’s eyes sparkled with delight. “Adorable. She already did.”
The flash of Ivy’s hazel eyes, wide with shock as she was dragged to her own room to wait for a decision to be made. “She didn’t leave. You took her.”
He chuckled. “Technically, you’re correct. Would you prefer she was still here with you?”
“I—” Felicia hated herself, then, for how close she came to saying yes, and she hated him even more for the slight quirk of his lips as he saw the indecision play across her face, as he read her like a book. “I’m glad she’ll be safe now,” she managed at last.
“Safe is a relative term,” Volkan said, setting his empty glass down on the table. “But I’m sure we can both agree she’s in a better place than you are.” He leaned in closer to her, pressing her against the couch, and his arms surrounding her were the jaws of a trap closing in on her.
