O atual vice campeão passou para semifinal após derrotar quatro adversários nesta sexta-feira (24), incluindo o turco Mete Gazoz atual campeão olímpico de Tiro com Arco. Com a classificação para a segunda rodada, o brasileiro enfrentou uma verdadeira maratona nesta sexta-feira (24).

Pela primeira partida do dia, Marcus derrotou de virada o alemão Nico Schiffhauer (76 no ranking), por 6 a 2, onde foi dominante na maior parte do confronto. Na terceira rodada, o luxemburguês Jeff Henckels foi um confronto previsto como duro e se confirmou isso, o brasileiro começou perdendo a partida por dois sets, porém conseguiu virar num teste de paciência decidido no detalhe com 29 pontos (de 30 no total) no set decisivo, 6 a 4 pro brasileiro e classificação para as oitavas-de-finais, onde enfrentou, o também turco, Samet Ak. Dois sets terminaram empatados, porém o brasileiro foi melhor no final da partida, vencendo por também 6 a 4.

Já na última partida de sexta-feira, pelas quartas-de-finais, Marcus D'Almeida enfrentou o atual campeão olímpico Mete Gazoz, dada como a partida mais nivelada do dia, o turco começou vencendo o primeiro set por 29 a 28, porém Marcus empatou no segundo set por 29 a 27. Com um terceiro set perfeito de 30 pontos Gazoz ganhou do brasileiro que terminou com 28 pontos, abrindo assim a liderança por 4 a 2. Com mais uma prova de resiliência, Marcus ganhou o quarto set (29 a 28) devolveu a desvantagem empatando sets. Já no set decisivo, o brasileiro conseguiu três 9 consecutivos, onde contou com um 7 do turco para vencer por 27 a 26 e avançar para as semifinais, disputadas no domingo (26).

Brasil na competição

Matheus Gomes e Ane Marcelle dos Santos foram outros brasileiros competindo em suas categorias individuais que chegaram a ir mais longe na competição. Matheus, que era 75º colocado do ranqueamento, eliminou o holandês Rick Van der Ven na segunda rodada, porém na terceira rodada foi eliminado pelo francês Pierre Plihon por 6 a 4.

Ane Marcelle dos Santos chegou a ir mais longe, porém infelizmente foi eliminada nas oitavas-de-final. Na sua primeira partida ganhou da italiana Elisabetta Mijno por 6 a 0, passando para a próxima fase onde iria enfrentar a alemã Katharina Bauer por 6 a 4. Nas oitavas, pegou Rezza Octavia, atleta da Indonésia, onde a adversária foi mais forte e acabou vencendo por 6 a 2.

As outras brasileiras competindo, que infelizmente pararam na primeira fase de mata-mata, foram Ana Luiza Caetano, Ana Machado e Marina Canetta.

FBI Data Show An Unprecedented Spike In Murders Nationwide In 2020 (NPR) The number of murders in the United States jumped by nearly 30% in 2020 compared to the previous year in the largest single-year increase ever recorded in the country, according to official FBI statistics released Monday. The data show 21,570 homicides in the U.S. in 2020, which is a staggering 4,901 more than in 2019. The tally makes clear—in concrete terms—just how violent last year was. The overall violent crime rate, which includes murder, assault, robbery and rape, inched up around 5%, while property crimes continued their long-running decline and dropped 8% from 2019. But the spike in murders jumps out in the FBI report because of the sheer scale of the change. Jeff Asher, a data consultant who studies crime rates, said the increase is the largest since national records began being kept in 1960s. The homicide rate thus far in 2021 is up 10% from last year.

The gala remembers the late great Yankees captain and catcher Thurman Munson and has raised more than $18 million for the AHRC NYC Foundation which supports programs that enable children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to lead richer, more productive lives.

Joining in the celebration is a stellar lineup of sports dignitaries that includes baseball notables Bobby Valentine, John Flaherty and Nelson Figueroa, ever-popular Knicks guard John Starks, and a trio of New York Football Giants Super Bowl champs who are previous ‘Thurman” recipients: Hall of Famer Harry Carson, Chris Canty and Karl Nelson.

Tina Cervasio, lead sports anchor for FOX 5 in New York, will be the Master of Ceremonies. New York Islanders co-owner and Katie Ledecky’s proud uncle, Jon Ledecky, will accept on her behalf. Katie Ledecky will also send a video message since she is unable to attend due to the date change from the originally-scheduled February 1

The Thurman Munson Awards are presented annually for success and inspiration on the fields of play, and community spirit off the field. Thurman’s widow Diana Munson is an honorary chair who has supported AHRC NYC and its fund-raising efforts through the Thurman Munson Awards for four decades.
