Welcome to Unagi City!
Tumblr media
This bustling city is the #1 place for the troopers to fight crime and save the day! Unagi City gets its name from the Japanese word "unagi", meaning eel. It's supposedly named after the electric eel, because of all of the advanced technology there. Let's meet some of the civilians of Unagi City!
Tumblr media
Bingo (he/him)
Cishet Man
Age: 25
He is the troopers' best friend, and quite a worrywart, too. He's often known for being kind of a butt-monkey, because he often gets into major injuries now and then. Poor guy!
Fun Fact: Bingo has a similar role to Kenny and Butters from South Park; He gets mutilated a lot like the former, and he's just as innocent as the latter.
Tumblr media
Joe (he/him)
Cishet Man
Age: 33
Joe is as cool as a cucumber. He's just an easygoing guy who likes to do water-related activities. Wait.... speaking of cucumbers, he sure does have a fondness for eating those.
Fun Fact: Joe is a kappa, a popular yokai from Japanese folklore. His fondness of cucumbers is actually true to the myth; the kappa were known for liking cucumbers.
Tumblr media
Meep (she/her)
Cishet Girl
Age: 3
She's small and cute, but she's also a noisy little demon child. She only communicates by making little squeaks; hence the name.
Fun Fact: Meep is based on one of the creator's cats. The cat she was based on was known for being extremely noisy, too.
Tumblr media
Chip (she/her)
Cishet Woman
Age: 22
She's so small, she can fit in the palm of your hand! Chip is very sweet and kind, and despite her size, she's pretty adventurous too! She recently moved from Mijinko City to Unagi City to make friends with regular sized beastmen.
Fun Fact: She's actually part of a species of beastmen called "micro-beastmen". Micro-beastmen are the size of bugs, and they all live together in Mijinko City, which is named after the Japanese word for "water flea".
Tumblr media
Roe (he/they)
Gay Demiboy
Age: 28
He is the owner of "Winner Winner", a restaurant he inherited from his late father. They and Brock are in a same-sex relationship together, and they can change their fur color based on their mood!
Fun Fact: The whole color-change thing was based on that of a mood ring, but real mood rings only change color based on temperature.
Tumblr media
Old Man Windy (he/him)
Cishet Man
Age: 91
He is a peaceful ol' guy who likes feeding the birds at the park, but he's also the coach of the famous soccer team "Allstar Armadillos".
Fun Facts: He is supposed to be a Bichon Frise-poodle mix, and he gets his name because of his cloudlike face.
Tumblr media
Whiz (he/him)
Cishet Male Dog
Age: 3 (29 in dog years)
He's a one-eyed stray dog who has an unstable bladder, but he also has an IQ of 900.
Fun Fact: His name has a double meaning; "whiz" can either mean being a genius or taking a piss.
Tumblr media
Paper Bag Kamen (he/him)
Cishet Man
Age: ???
He's a random homeless guy who thinks he's a superhero. When he always tries to save the day, he'll either get injured or get in trouble.
Fun Facts: He is an obvious parody of Kamen Rider, and the way his "face" is stylized is called a "henohenomoheji". The henohenomoheji is made up of Japanese characters that spell out its name (and make up the face), and it's also used as a placeholder for a nondescript person.
Tumblr media
Mandrake (she/her)
GNC Cishet Woman
Age: 24
She's the troopers' greatest rival, and she always like causing trouble on purpose, from bullying to littering.
Fun Facts: She has a similar role to Roger Klotz from Doug, and she gets her name from a plant that's rumored to have a demon inside that'll kill you when you uproot it.

In movies, love is always about the big moments. Grand speeches made in front of everyone, "marry me" written on the Jumbotron. But maybe love is actually about the moments when you think no one is watching.

Excerpt from this story from Grist:
As the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the country last year, then-candidate Joe Biden pushed one message again and again: “Build Back Better.” The phrase now lends its name to the White House’s massive, multi-pronged proposal to help the country recover from the COVID-induced recession, tackle climate change, and bring the country’s railroads, bridges, and water pipes into the modern era.
But what if this ambitious plan misses an easier opportunity: remove what isn’t working? The Biden administration’s slogan reveals something about how people normally go about trying to improve the world — they’re driven by a default impulse to build big things to solve big problems.
New research suggests that people often overlook the option of getting rid of elements in favor of adding new ones, even when the simpler solution is superior. Behavioral scientists are making the case that a “subtractive” approach could be useful in tackling global problems like the climate crisis.
“Especially in this moment, there’s a strong push to focus on repairing or rebuilding existing infrastructure, which is in some ways a form of status quo thinking,” said Erin Sherman, a vice president of Ideas42, a nonprofit behavioral design firm. Sherman says that there are plenty of ways that removing infrastructure could help the environment, whether that’s taking down highways, saying goodbye to seawalls, or tearing out pavement.
Leidy Klotz, the author of the new book Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less, suggests that the old slogan “reduce, reuse, recycle” needs a 4th R: remove. “Reduce, reuse, recycle is not going to solve climate change, because you’ve already surpassed emissions,” he said. “I mean, remove should be one of the things that we consider, and should probably be the first thing we consider.”
What would that look like in the real world? It could mean adapting to heavier downpours by taking out pavement in a flood zone, or digging holes in it to allow the soil to soak up more water. That might help flood-prone, concrete-heavy cities like Houston weather more storms like Hurricane Harvey. Adapting to rising seas might mean replacing sea walls (which can erode beaches even further) with “living shorelines” made up of wetland plants, sand dunes, other natural elements. Subtraction could also mean simply removing an old, falling-apart freeway in a city, as Seattle and San Francisco did, making way for parks, public transit, or affordable housing.

Watch intrigue and drama unfold in the trailer for MOTHERLESS BROOKLYN starring Writer/Director Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, with Alec Baldwin and Willem Dafoe. Coming to cinemas soon. Lionel Essrog (Edward Norton), a lonely private detective living with Tourette Syndrome, ventures to solve the murder of his mentor and only friend, Frank Minna (Bruce Willis). Armed only with a few clues and the engine of his obsessive mind, Lionel unravels closely guarded secrets that hold the fate of New York in the balance. In a mystery that carries him from gin-soaked jazz clubs in Harlem to the hard-edged slums of Brooklyn and, finally, into the gilded halls of New York's power brokers, Lionel contends with thugs, corruption and the most dangerous man in the city to honor his friend and save the woman who might be his own salvation. Edward Norton directed, wrote, produced and stars in “Motherless Brooklyn.” The film’s journey to the screen began in 1999 when Norton saw the cinematic potential in Jonathan Lethem’s novel Motherless Brooklyn and its unforgettable central character. But from the beginning, Norton aimed to transpose Lethem’s contemporary characters into a different period and plot and give it a distinctive atmosphere by re-setting the drama in the 1950s—a time of great change in New York City. The film’s stellar ensemble cast also includes Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Bobby Cannavale, Cherry Jones, Michael Kenneth Williams, Leslie Mann, Ethan Suplee, Dallas Roberts, Josh Pais, Robert Ray Wisdom, Fisher Stevens, with Alec Baldwin and Willem Dafoe. Norton also produced the film with his Class 5 Films producing partner Bill Migliore; Michael Bederman; and MWM Studios’ Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane. Adrian Alperovich, Sue Kroll, Daniel Nadler, Robert F. Smith, and Brian Niranjan Sheth served as executive producers. Behind the scenes, Norton collaborated with two-time Oscar-nominated director of photography Dick Pope (“Mr. Turner,” “The Illusionist”), production designer Beth Mickle (“Drive,” “Collateral Beauty”), Oscar-nominated editor Joe Klotz (“Precious,” “The Butler”) and costume designer Amy Roth (TV’s “The Looming Tower,” “Indignation”). Music plays an important role in setting the tone and establishing the period of “Motherless Brooklyn.” The score is composed by Daniel Pemberton (“Steve Jobs,” “All The Money In The World,” “Oceans 8,” “Spider Man: Into The Spiderverse”) and features Wynton Marsalis on the trumpet. The film also features an original song written and performed by Thom Yorke.

Musical Monday
Tumblr media
1995 was one of those off years that we just don’t talk about, with regards to the Tony Awards, that is. With only two musicals up for Best Musical, there wasn’t much competition going on. Furthermore, only two musicals were up for Best Revival of a Musical. And all four musicals have been highlighted on this segment of the blog already. So, this week is a little hybrid-1995 highlight post, because what would Monday be without a little Musical love? Enjoy!
Musical Monday date: 1/14/2019
Musicals: Sunset Boulevard competed against Smokey Joe’s Cafe, and won. The revival of Show Boat was up against the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and won!
Sunset Boulevard: Not only did it win Best Musical, but it rocked the Tonys this year with six wins. Glenn Close won for Best Actress in a Musical, George Hearn won for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, in addition to various technical and writing wins.
Smokey Joe’s Cafe: The little revue that could, received seven nominations, but took home no wins. But that’s okay, it did enjoy a 2,036 show run.
Show Boat: Of the ten nominations it received, Gretha Boston was the sole acting winner, for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Susan Stroman stood strong as the winning choreographer, and Harold Prince took home another Tony to add to his collection, this time for Best Direction of a Musical. And, of course, the iconic Florence Klotz had Tony-winning glory for her glorious costumes.
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying: Only four nominations could be spared for this Pulitzer-winning musical. However, Matthew Broderick certainly knew how to succeed this season as being the sole Tony winner for his production, which was as the Best Actor in a Musical.
There ya have it! 1996 will be a little more rewarding of a year, I swear! But now you have some fun Tony facts to chew on for the week. Now go pick up a few of these cast recordings and give them a listen. Until next week, keep happy and go see a show!

Kulbakov Saves Win For Mallards
MOLINE, IL – For the first time in franchise history the Quad City Mallards took on the Idaho Steelheads on Friday night in what proved to be a shooting gallery by the visitors. Ivan Kulbakov made 57 saves on the night for Phillipe Desrosiers’ 23 saves, the most by a Mallards goalie so far this season. Brady Brassartreturned to the home of the Mallards for the first time since signing with Idaho over the off-season, contributing to the score sheet in the first period.
Once again the Mallards gave up a goal within the opening four minutes of the game, but this time it was a power-play goal. Sam Warning got the gate for hooking just a smidge over two minutes into the game, sending the Steelheads onto the man-advantage. Forty seconds later Henrik Samuelsson lit the lamp behind Kulbakov after capitalizing on a rebound just outside the crease on the goalie’s left. Joe Faust and Jefferson Dahl earned the apples on Samuelsson’s tally. Four minutes later the Mallards almost scored off a Jamie Tardif shot, the puck bouncing wildly through the crease behind Desrosier during a scramble, but the bounces never went the right way for the Mallards and the goal light remained off.
The Mallards tied the game up on a power-play of their own due to a delay of game face-off violation that brought the face-off from the Mallards’ zone to the Steelheads’ zone. Kyle Bigos, who made his Mallards debut Friday, sent the puck towards the net, Alex Globke finding the rebound and bringing it into the right corner. Globke passed up to Tristan King in the slot, who then passed to Josh MacDonald on the left at the near dot. MacDonald’s shot found twine, bringing the Mallards’ power-play to 1-for-16.
Six minutes later the Mallards took the lead off a Sam Warning goal. King brought the puck into Idaho’s zone through the center, taking a shot on goal. The puck rebounded to Matt Pohlkamp, who passed it back up to King for another shot. That shot then rebounded to the right, Desrosiers following the puck out of the crease. Warning grabbed the puck along the goal line, angling it to kiss the twine just inside the post as Desrosiers slid to the circle around the near right dot.
Garret Klotz and Reid Halabi exchanged punches infront of the visitors’ bench with 35 seconds remaining in the first frame, though it was a rather one-sided exchange. Klotz, at 6’6”, only managed a few punches against the 5’10” Halabi, his sweater appearing to tangle him up. The two sat for four minutes with double roughing minors, but while they were in there the Steelheads knotted the score. Justin Parizek tipped a shot in past Kulbakov, Faust and Brassart making their ways onto the scoresheet with the assists.
The score would remain the same until the end of regulation through the skill of Kulbakov, as the Mallards were outshot 17-6 in the second period and 20-8 in the final period. Same bad passes almost cost the Mallards the game, such as when Warning coughed the puck up to an Idaho player who then streaked away for a breakaway that Kulbakov saved. After regulation time expired the Mallards had a few good chances in the extra period, but the Steelheads did as well.
Kulbakov was perfect in the shoot-out, making saves on Samuelsson, Dahl, and Shane Hanna. King was the only Mallard to score during the shoot-out, Warning unable to release the puck to lift it over Desrosiers.
The two teams will face off again tonight October 28 at 7:05 CST for the Halloween game, a costume contest and on-ice trick-or-treating during intermission on the schedule for the night.

Recita nel film un cast stellare che comprende anche Bruce Willis (i film “Die Hard”, “Moonrise Kingdom- Una fuga d’amore”), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Nelle pieghe del tempo”), Bobby Cannavale (“Tonya”), Cherry Jones (“Boy Erased – Vite cancellate”), Michael Kenneth Williams (“When They See Us”), Leslie Mann (“Tutte contro lui”), Ethan Suplee (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), Dallas Roberts (“Dallas Buyers Club”), Josh Pais (“Ray Donovan”), Robert Ray Wisdom (“The Fix”), Fisher Stevens (“The Blacklist”), al fianco del nominato all’Oscar® Alec Baldwin (“The Cooler”, “BlacKkKlansman”, “The Departed – Il bene e il male”) e il nominato all’Oscar® Willem Dafoe (“Van Gogh – Sulla soglia dell’eternità”, “Un sogno chiamato Florida”).
