Movie #18 of 2024: Civil War
I really wanted to like this movie but I'm not sure what the message is other than "war is hell" and "fascism is a political aesthetic without any real core unifying principles, just as Mussolini founded it, so intent, motive, and logic don't matter and you shouldn't try to 'understand' the actions of the fascist President of this movie".
The sound design is great and I did like the look and cinematography quite a bit. The choice to insert IMAX giant 4:3 still images from the young photog's camera was a brilliant touch and definitely contributed to the documentary feel they tried to achieve. Didn't like how they treated some of the characters and the whole story frankly is rather ludicrous. Watching it in IMAX was fun, but the screen itself was garbage. Do better AMC.

Movie #12 of 2024: Knox Goes Away
I'm a little obsessed with the subject of dementia because alzheimers runs in my family. The thought of losing my mind is terrifying, so I was intrigued by the premise of Knox Goes Away: a hitman learns he has weeks left before he loses his mind to dementia.
Michael Keaton not only stars in, but also directs this character study/dark comedy/b-movie style action thriller. Thankfully it leans into the psychological aspects of dealing with the fact that one knows one is about to lose one's mind.
Al Pacino is in it and does some fine sitting acting. Speaking of sitting, the gravelly voices are nearly unintelligible at times as they sit way down in the low frequency end of the audio spectrum. This mix is NOT going to transfer well to TV.
So I guess you're better off seeing, but really hearing, this sneakily actually a dark comedy of errors in thriller clothing in the theaters.

Movie #11 of 2024: Arthur the King
So I got one of those AMC movie pass things as a gift, and AMC apparently does a thing where they show a movie that's not quite officially out yet but they don't tell you what it will be ahead of time. It's a mystery!
That's how I ended up watching a CGI dog out act Mark Wahlberg, which isn't surprising and this is definitely not a movie I would ever willingly watch.
In fact, looking at the poster, I'm pretty sure this is the exact same design for that Harrison Ford dog movie that came out in 2020. Did I ever tell you I was the finishing editor on promotional dog food spots for that movie? True exciting Hollywood story.
Uhh what were we talking about again? Oh right, Arthur the King I guess is fine and the dog isn't always CGI, but the facial expressions and noises it makes are definitely all super deep fake generative AI deageing-filter Irishman Al Pacino young face style.
It's only 90 minutes which is and I guess it is kinda cool that it's based on a true story which plays out during the end credits. What are the odds I pull the latest dog movie for mystery cinema? It's dumb and you'll think about your dead dog who died of a rare kidney cancer and almost cry the whole time, which is a very common thing that could happen to anyone watching this cheesy movie and not specifically me.

Movie #10 of 2024: The X Files
I've been watching the series on Hulu and they remastered it for widescreen t.v.'s and some of the framing is hilarious when they block the actors super close together in the center of the screen.
The first three seasons are fantastic. My favorite episode is probably "Squeeze" which includes snap crackling pop dialog from Mulder like, "Is there anyway I can get it off my fingers quickly without betraying my cool exterior?" [shakes hand wildy]
My other favorite aspect of the early seasons includes on location shooting in Vancouver so nearly every episode they're in a forest. This dynamic led to magnificent storytelling decisions facilitated by editing such as Mulder knocking on Scully's door and handing her a ticket because they've got to get on a plane to leave D.C. and fly to Washington state. Smash cut to Mulder and Scully in a 1994 Ford Taurus driving INTO DANGER (a forest). Because something bad and scary happened there (forest bad)!
Oh yeah, they also made this dumb movie at some point in between seasons. Duchovny and Anderson exude tiredness as they over and under emote their way through this oddly paced nothingburger of a movie that serves as a way to kill the one cool old english guy and doesn't make a whole lotta sense continuity wise. And then they've gotta get right back to work on the next season. It's fine.

Movie #9 of 2024: How To Blow Up A Pipeline
I don't understand why there was a lot of controversy around this movie. It made it sound like it was some kind of weird liberal propaganda, but nothing could be further from the truth.
This is great FILMMAKING and storytelling that ratchets up the tension to pipeline exploding levels. The world building is top notch. It's our world.
Cinematography? Crackerjack natural lighting and fill ratios to please the most annoying coked out director of photography.
Young actors that seem more worldly and able to bring gravitas that professionals 20 years their senior couldn't muster if their lives depended on it.
The editing propels the story forward as the band of rebels moves forward with their illegal plan. Peppered with parallel action detailing how the group got motivated and came together ratcheting up the tension as you realize you're not sure who is the mastermind behind this expedition and who is actually playing who.
Worthy cinema that should be shown in theaters all the time on Sundays at matinees.

Movie #7 of 2024: Man on Fire
Someone at Hulu clearly fucked up and thought this was the Tony Scott/Denzel Washington remake as they even tagged as a "Black Story" (I'm not shitting you).
Speaking of Scotts, Scott Glenn is pitch perfect as the tortured and cynical ex-CIA agent Creasy. Joe Pesci is as naturalistic as ever in any production, shows off his musical chops, and delivers one of the most cringe worthy and homophobic lines in this Italian American co-production shot on location in Lake Como.
Man on Fire contains elements and story structure that inform the current batch of b-action films like John Wick: character building showing the protagonist in the hale of health and happy with life. Living. Loving.... before being brought low by by the actions of criminal cretins who motivate Creasy to take up his violent past to save the girl.
And just like in your John Wicks, once the switch is flipped to VIOLENCE, this film does not let up. The cinematography oozes criminal grime with on location gritty neo-realist/noir locations. The editing is like something out of an arthouse movie and elevates the simple story and plot to a sublime, fever dream of brutal violence and operatic crescendos.
Completely unlike any late 80s action film and worth the watch as it continues to influence future filmmakers to this day.
