So you’ve done your ideal roster for Shu, what about Wei, Wu, and other?

I have received a couple variations on this question.

For each faction I had to ask myself what story I’m trying to tell. Some characters are there because of their achievements; others are there because of the way they would act as foils to other characters. It’s also important to understand that in any given story, you’d see a lot of NPCs who also have importance.

Wei’s story is probably the most straightforward one. It’s all about the Cao’s conquests; pretty simple. Most of the characters are there to support that, while some are included for personal reasons.

Jin’s was the hardest to cut down, in large part because DW only gives them 13 characters and I decided to stick to that restriction. I decided that story would need to focus on the rise of the Sima family and their unification of the former Han empire. This ultimately meant that a lot of people who I wanted to make playable (like Dowager Guo and Xiahou Xuan) got cut - to keep the numbers limited most of the Sima family’s enemies got put in the NPC category. The remaining ones are the people I thought were absolutely essential to the overall narrative.

Wu’s was also very difficult. They also got less characters than Wei and Shu (though not as few as Jin) and have the longest continuous story to tell. While I originally considered restricting that story to a limited span of time that ultimately just didn’t satisfy me. So I focused on having a broad group of characters who could be used to tell every part of the kingdom’s story. Longevity was often an individual’s best friend.

For Others the question was which groups interacted with at least 2 of the 3 main factions. This immediately excluded a lot of groups (like the Nanzhong leaders or Liu Yao’s army); longevity was often a factor in choosing which individuals would best represent those groups. None of these were easy decisions; characters who could reasonably be put in this category but later joined one of the main factions were also favored.

I’m constantly second-guessing these lists, BTW. I’m always asking myself “Okay this person was IMPORTANT but is this a perspective we need to get the story from? Or could their importance be represented as an NPC? Why does this character need to be PLAYABLE instead of just important?” But that’s contradicted by the question of “Will this character actually seem appropriately important if they aren’t playable? Would I just be asking ‘If this person is so important why aren’t they playable?’ Is playability a measure of importance?”

The Samsara of Building No.42 on Dirty Street 2008-2017 by Drawing Architecture Studio

The Samsara of Building No.42 on Dirty Street is a visual narrative about the development of a residential building in Beijing China in the past decade through 4 architectural axonometric drawings.

2008

The first drawing is about Building No.42 in 2008. In that year, Taikoo Li, the most fashionable shopping center at San Li Tun opened. As the building is located in the middle of the South and North Wings of Taikoo Li, it started its commercial transformation as well. The windows and balconies of the apartments on the first and second floors were broken down and turned into facades for bars, restaurants, DVD shops, nail salons, tattoo studios, and etc. Each commercial venue became a small and independent unit as Fumihiko Maki defined in his “Group Form” theory and altogether they completed the building itself as a case study of ever-changing group form. In the first drawing, the spaces and activities inside those small commercial units are presented in detail as an explosive isometric drawing. The form of black and white line drawing is exploited to keep a calm and objective attribute for the documentation.

2016

The second drawing depicts Building No.42 in summer 2016. By then, its commercial activities had expanded to higher floors. A hair salon was even opened at the top of the building. It seemed that the whole building was going to be a sleepless city with each corner becoming recreation facility. But like a forecast warning, a blue billboard was put next to the electric line pole on the ground, saying the government of Beijing was going to crack down the action of “first-floor-homes-turned-businesses”. This full-color drawing illustrates the prosperous night scenes at San Li Tun. There are two viewpoints in this piece: if looking downward, the viewers will see all kinds of shops and human activities for a night life. If looking upward, they will see shining stars with a jolly happy atmosphere from heaven to earth. During the night, it was very dark on the middle floors of Building No.42. They were used as dorms for the staff from the shops downstairs. The staff worked at bars during the noisy night. When it got quiet during the day, they came back to the dorm to rest. Without involvement of any outer force, this building established a sustainable eco system without too big contradiction. 

2017.04.24

The third drawing depicts the event on April 24, 2017. On that day the government started a total renovation for Building No.42. The facades of the commercial units on the first and second floors were demolished. And as a synchronous operation, the windows and balconies of the original residential building were restored. The creation of this drawing is inspired by the works by Lebbeus Woods and it explores the aesthetics of violence in architectural drawing. It is filled with broken walls, rubbles, and debris. But there are also the strength of construction inside the damage and insistence from the business people against the crackdown. Such contradictory and tensions resulted from all of these pushed Building No. 42 to its most dramatic moment. 

2017.12

The fourth drawing shows how the renovated Building No.42 looks around 8 months after the crackdown day. The building is refurbished with new flower beds, new fences for air conditioners, and new windows. It has nothing to do with “dirty” and has become a brand-new, clean and tidy residence. The drawing is featured with a utopian vision as the structure of Building No.42 is cut open into a hallow diamond shape and the scenes from the distance are shown through the building in the middle of the canvas. Behind Building No.42, there are old residential areas and some new luxurious housings even farther. In the most distance, there are stores selling Bentley and Mercedes. They simply represent the dreams from most people for this metropolis: decent housing and decent cars. Everyone in this city is trying their best to run towards the new era.

2008-2017

The story of Building No. 42 on Dirty Street over the past 10 years shows how two powers fight with each other in urban development. One is the bottom-up civil power by average people. The other is the top-down administrative power by the government. Taking architectural drawing as a critical craft and with vivid drawing language, Drawing Architecture Studio represents the process of such a battle and examines the relationship between man and city in the Samsara of Building No.42 on Dirty Street and hopes to stimulate further discussions regarding urban development.

Charan! Naging tao na ko ulit :D Nginitian ko na si Papa. Kinausap ko na ng matino si Mama. at Pinansin ko na si Ate. haha tigas naman ng mukha ko kung di ko sya pansinin pagkatapos nya ko handaan?! Haha. Salamaaaat hihi :) Ganon din si Kuya, dahil masama talaga loob ko sa ginawa nya sa Laptop (kahit alam ko namang di nya rin naman yun ginusto, hay walde) di ko talaga sya binalak pansinin. Pero nung nagkakainan na kami, aba?! Nag-volunteer bumili nung mga softdrinks?! Phenomenal! Naglabas ng pera?! ayun, nalimutan ko yung binalak ko. HAHA :D

at dahil nanjan na ren naman ang kainan, salamat sa mga naghanda para saken! Haha :D Selebrasyong wala ako? haha! Sa  mga bruha kong kebigan nun College, ke Kaye kahit pano naisip ako idamay sa birthday ng kapatid nya :D kaawa-awang bata naman ako haha.

Following PRODUCE48 has been a long road but since debut is here I’m excited to see the results of this semi-masterpiece of craziness.

Pre-Debut I picked my favorites to win by rumors, appearances, & past facts. I didn’t watch anything related to the show like teasers or the little shorts they made to show each girl. My choices are as follows;

So when it comes to the matter of who was overall better Grand Commander of their army how would you rank the ones of Shu and Wu, from best to worse?

I’m accepting a loose definition of this term (essentially “guy who was in charge of military stuff) and excepting people who only held the position briefly like Zhuge Zhan. Not going with any strict definitions here:

To me, this kind of position is as much about civil affairs as it was about the military. Did you do well on the battlefield, and did you do well outside of it? That’s mostly what makes my decisions here.

WU

Lu Xun: An accomplished commander and excellent administrator. Exactly what you’d want from someone in his position.

Lu Kang: Exactly as above; he had a bit less success but, in his defense, he was working under more difficult conditions.

Lü Dai: He had his share of military victories over many years and proved his ability in civil affairs as well. He was mostly quiet during the political affairs of his day, not really making waves. I see nothing to criticize about him.

Zhuge Jin: His ability on the battlefield was inferior to those above him on this list, but he was as influential in civil affairs as Lu Xun and Lu Kang. He managed military affairs well, despite being an average tactician.

Zhuge Ke: He had impressive skill as a commander, but his leadership style alienated the court and the military. His talent on the battlefield wasn’t enough to make up for that.

Ding Feng: Most of his success came long before he was appointed to the highest position in Wu’s army. As an overall commander he wasn’t especially accomplished, but his impressive career prior to that counts for something.

Shi Ji: There is little room to criticize him, but he was rather quiet as a commander, without many achievements of note compared to the others.

Sun Jun: He had no demonstrable skill as a commander but he was an adept politician, steering the Crown Prince Affair, engineering his own rise to power, and avoiding several assassination attempts. So that’s something.

Sun Chen: There’s really nothing I can praise him for. He mostly rode Sun Jun’s coattails to the top and fell pretty quickly.

SHU

Fei Yi: An absolute god in administrative matters, he presided over Shu’s golden era. His military campaigns accomplished little but they were also strictly limited in scope, minimizing losses.

Zhuge Liang: While I will always be highly critical of his military exploits, there can be no doubt that he was a master of civil policy. Shu would not have existed without him and his achievements in that arena cannot be overstated. However, his campaigns in the north were unsuccessful and his losses were more significant than those under Fei Yi.

Jiang Wan: A skilled administrator; he also permitted some military operations that had only limited success - more in the south than in the north. But again his losses were small and I see no real reason to be overly critical.

Jiang Wei: Remarkably inept as a front-line commander, Jiang Wei also neglected court affairs and fled from conflict with Huang Hao rather than confront him. His failures in war and politics were a huge factor in his state’s destruction.

WEI

Sima Yi: A highly effective leader in both war and politics. He boasts an impressive military record with victories on all fronts, and his victory over his rivals in the Zhengshi era proves that he was the more adept politician. He also had a huge influence in Wei’s early years as a civil official.

Sima Zhao: He didn’t spend much time on the battlefield (and his time there was not successful) but he was an excellent delegator and highly skilled politician who eliminated all rivals to seize complete power over the Wei court. That wasn’t necessarily good for the Cao, but he was good at doing it.

Gongsun Yuan: His position as a subject of Wei is arguable, but Gongsun Yuan had impressive talents. He revitalized his state after his uncle’s misrule and oversaw victories against the northern tribes and Goguryeo, as well as against Guanqiu Jian. In the end, though, his talents weren’t quite enough to preserve his state.

Cao Shuang: He effectively assembled a powerful faction of personal supporters that allowed him to dominate government affairs for nearly a decade. Although he was ultimately outplayed by Sima Yi, it would be foolish to dismiss the political talents that allowed him to become dictator over Wei for a decade.

Cao Ren: His military record is extremely impressive, but he wasn’t really involved with affairs of state outside of that. He was an exceptional commander but lacked the political astuteness of those I placed above him.

Cao Zhen: Like Cao Ren, he also had a very impressive military record but wasn’t really involved in politics.

Cao Xiu: As above, he was a skilled commander and a man of good conduct; just a bit less skilled than his counterpart Cao Zhen.

Sima Shi: Although he had no particularly embarrassing incidents, Sima Shi had demonstrably less control over affairs than his father and brother. His brief tenure saw a major conspiracy against him as well as a substantial rebellion. He arguably overcame these challenges, but the instability of his short reign makes him the least impressive of those who hold such a position in Wei.

I don’t feel like I really have enough of a handle on the details of a lot of Jin figures to make judgments about them like this.

I know there are going to be some arguments, and that’ll be fun. Honestly people shifted around a lot when I was writing this, so I’m as surprised by some of these decisions as you are.
