co-morbid is so cool!! all your ideas regarding vulcan bonds are so cool and based and right and they have given me many ideas. ((:
also ulotyn is/are really pretty…
i also think it’s absolutely hilarious that they may or may not have written a paper on their own condition, from a care facility that’s trying to treat them for said condition. it’s like. at least they’re (to some degree) self aware?
also if you ever plan on continuing their story, i’d love to know about their mysterious bondmate and how that relationship came to be. but if this was just a one-off, that’s cool too!!
anyways i love them they’re so very Interesting.
Thank you so much~!!!! Hehehe I like to think a lot of the papers that are supposedly suspected of being written by Ulotyn are just people who want to level that accusation at academic rivals. The real ones are much more difficult to pick out. They wrote with an extremely dry and studious shared voice which had absolutely no flair or personality - difficult even for Vulcans to read without being bored unless they were extremely dedicated to that field of study. On the topic of their mysterious bondmate...~
Tumblr media
Professor Kosak-Dahr. ('Dahr' here being an approximation of 'junior' or 'the second') He met Ulonk and T'ynara because they're in the same field of study. They met randomly at an academic conference and immediately clicked. Kosak refused to become bonded as a child and remained so in adulthood. He was able to stave off his pon farrs with rigorous meditation and willpower and was thus regarded as a very powerful and controlled individual when it came to his mind. This was the focus of many of his papers about the mind's abilities and was of great interest to Vulcan society as a whole. He was known to look down heavily on those who could not endure pon farr without taking a mate (despite this being extremely rare) and viewed it as an incredible weakness of Vulcankind. However, he had also begun to find it extremely difficult to endure the pon farr (as it seems to increase in intensity each cycle) alone. He kept this secret. He found the fact that Ulonk and T'ynara had bonded before it was necessary (and without familial pressure) to be interesting and began to read more of their papers to see if they were the type to go on flowery (relative to Vulcans) speeches about love. He was even more intrigued to see that they were not - that they were in fact extremely logical in their points and perspectives despite the topics they wrote about. Kosak and Ulotyn grew closer and closer, performing small experiments and working together frequently. Soon their relationship became romantic but Ulotyn said they'd only agree if Kosak treated them as one individual instead of two. Kosak agreed. They continued this relationship for a while. Then Kosak began experiencing symptoms of the pon farr. He attempted to meditate as he usually did but could not and after several days he was dying. Ulotyn offered to attempt a bond with him. All three had been researching about the topic and it was highly experimental but Kosak accepted the offer. Since they knew no official channels would perform the bonding ceremony, they attempted to do it themselves. They were stopped in the middle of this procedure due to concerned parties who suspected something was going wrong in the home or between the three in general. All three of them were taken to a hospital. Ulotyn admitted what they were attempting readily and thus were tried and placed in a mental health facility. Kosak was viewed as the victim in this case and assigned a mental health counselor to report to but otherwise let go. Kosak continues to write papers and operate as part of the academic community. However, he is more scrutinized than before and became the subject of many rumors. Many people tell the story of Kosak as a cautionary tale, attributing his relationship with Ulotyn to the fact that Kosak didn't have a bondmate. Kosak himself became more solitary with time and miraculously never took a bondmate. His exact field of research remained within the Vulcan mind and its control but he stopped writing about the pon farr altogether after the incident.

My favorite books (and audiobooks) 2022
Tumblr media
ID: “Lancelot” by Giles Christian
An epic retelling of the story of Lancelot - the most tragic figure of the King Arthur saga. The first half of the book focuses on his youth and upbringing as a warrior on a remote island where he meets Guinevere when they’re still both kids. In the second half, we get to see him as a fully grown knight, his friendship with Arthur and his fatal love for Guinevere.
It’s a beautiful, patient, sometimes gritty and sometimes poetic novel that culminates in a heroic and tragic showdown. Its only flaw is a rushed last quarter, as if the author needed to squeeze too much story into the last 200 pages. Maybe this should’ve been a two-parter instead?
Tumblr media
ID: “Die Diplomatin” by Lucy Fricke
A wry, cynical novel on the privileges, grey areas and limits of diplomacy. We follow a German consul from her peaceful post in Uruguay to a much less serene post in Istanbul where politics are in a fragile, incendiary state. And managing a crisis turns out to be the most disillusioning affair our protagonist has ever faced.
A very contemporary, very apropos little novel that’s written with a glimmering scalpel.
Tumblr media
ID: “The Darkness Outside Us” by Eliot Schrefer
I almost dnf’ed this one after eye rolling my way through the first hour of teenager-y gays-in-space. But then my jaw began to drop as this YA sci-fi took a very dark turn.
Two young astronauts from enemy countries, stuck on a spaceship together, band together against insurmountable odds, and if you read this you won’t see coming what’s gonna hit you. The most surprising, wrecking read I’ve raced through in a long time. And the audiobook narrator is really, really good.
Tumblr media
ID: “A Psalm for the Wild-Built” by Becky Chambers
A tea-monk and a robot become BFFs on an ecotopian moon. That’s it. That’s the plot. An uplifting, touching and heartwarming read that both brought me to tears and gave me so much comfort.
“What do humans need?” That is the big question this quietly philosophical little Solarpunk story revolves around. And there are no simple answers.
Becky Chambers single-handedly invented “cozy sci-fi”, and I am so grateful she did! Part two, “A Prayer for the Crown-Shy”, is just as good, btw.
Tumblr media
ID: “Anna” by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles
Full immersion into Russian history, culture and geography in the early 1800s is what you’ll get from this underestimated historical romance novel.
We follow English governess Anna from Paris to Russia where she’s in the employment of the very attractive (and very married) Count Kirov.
Surprisingly, their love story isn’t what’s so beautiful about this book - it’s Russia herself, her landscape, culture and many different people. Anna spends time in glittering St. Petersburg, in majestic Moscow, but also in the wild Caucasian mountains. We meet Tartars, Kosaks and Mongols; counts, peasants, horsemen and warriors. We learn about Russian folklore and superstition, about traditions and rituals.
It was an eerie experience to read this book while Putin invaded the Ukraine, but what happened IRL also made “Anna” an even more valuable read. Parts of the story take place in what’s now the Ukraine, in Kiew. Back then, it was the other way around from what we’re seeing today: Napoleon invaded Russia, and Moscow became a victim of fire and flame. “Anna” taught me quite a bit of history I’d never learned in school.
In the end, “Anna” is a beautiful, sweeping saga from which I emerged reluctantly and wistfully, wanting more.
(Fair warning: the edition I read was obviously a reprint and riddled with printing errors to a degree that sometimes made it hard to read. Such negligence puts a really good novel to shame which it really doesn’t deserve. So please check which copy/edition you’re getting if you want to read this!)
Special shout-out to @hobbeshalftail3469 who recommended this book to @vgriffindor who then gave it to me as a gift!)
Your turn, bookish people! What were your favorites of 2022?!

Half-answer to a QOTD bot question, posted here to conserve space in the relevant discord
(cw: I don't even know where to start. I'm explaining what's going on between Midha and Wrathion. Remember what Dave Kosak said about black dragons.)
Currently, Midha's found family includes Zafirria and Wrathion. Once, it included Anduin and Wrathion. For the purposes of this post, I'll be excluding Zafirria and regarding Anduin as a supporting character.
At the start, when it was only Midha and Wrathion, Midha was a maladjusted preteen girl. Not understanding what she was doing, she (and in some part Wrathion) created a sort of double-sided parental affection:
Midha as the 'mother' to Wrathion because of her age, her willingness to listen, and her ability to carry out his plans.
Wrathion as the 'father' to Midha because of his emotional sway, his seeming authority in Ravenholdt, and his ability to provide gold and shelter.
This morphed in Pandaria to something more like a brother/sister relationship.
Here, Midha adapted more to Wrathion's perception of her as the 'little sister.' If she had any questions about his plans, she asked them privately. She tagged along, part of a package deal with the Black Prince, and she was debatably kept closer emotionally than his guards were physically. By this point, someone like Kairoz could start to spot what developed in Cataclysm: Wrathion was using Midha as a comfort object.
Then Wrathion disappeared, and Midha vanished in his absence. This might have been a warning sign for future developments, if anyone else were privy to their dynamic. Not even Anduin was aware: he might have thought of Midha as Wrathion's favorite champion, but probably not his first.
Moving on to BfA. Crucially, BfA Midha doesn't meet Wrathion any earlier than the player would. In fact, she meets him later.
In MoP, the invitation to meet that Wrathion sends Midha is different, and other 'cutscenes' are added onto her legendary questline.
In Cataclysm, Wrathion knows her by her presence beside his eggshell in the Vermillion Redoubt.
By contrast, Wrathion and Midha's dynamic in BfA is comparatively restrained:
Wrathion finds Midha having joined a raid into Nya'lotha, and having struck the final blow against his false copy. By this point, the Sha (possibly from exposure to Sha-touched items?) has taken over her. This is the first point at which Wrathion calls her family: speaking to her as he would "any sister in the grip of the black flight's madness."
Midha's restraint shows in not trying to contact Wrathion earlier. She even consults Yu'lon, asking what it is about her that makes her feel as though she'll ruin him by her presence: to which Yu'lon confronts her inner 'monster,' her loneliness, and eventually reassures: "There is no monster here. Only your heart."
Wrathion's restraint shows when, despite his doubt in himself, he allows her to leave after killing N'zoth. In fact, he brings her to Stormwind Keep, and takes quiet relief in Anduin inviting her to stay while he finds a way to cleanse her of the Sha for good. (This ends up not working.)
Before we move on to Dragonflight, let's also mention some other people in Midha's life. Chronologically speaking, Midha's romantic interests are as follows:
Shannox: Midha had a stint in Hyjal during Cataclysm. She started first 'noticing boys' around this time-- or, as the case may be, noticing men. We see here the exclusivity of Midha's love: Midha responds to her strange new feelings by systematically poisoning the all-male flamewakers which make up the rest of the hierarchy, trying to force Shannox to the top by default (in much the same way as she went after the remaining black dragons.)
Her kill count was over two dozen. Shannox was intrigued, but nevertheless did not take kindly when he finally met her.
This was the nail in the coffin for Midha prematurely neglecting her innocence and abandoning her role as 'child.'
Anduin: They were acquaintances in Pandaria who rarely spoke more than two sentences to each other. Midha held a passing fascination with him, as any common girl might with the crown prince of Stormwind. There was a rumor that his inner Light caused plants to bloom where he remained for long enough, like a red dragon.
Vyneia: Even Wrathion knew about Vyneia, though he didn't notice any romantic chemistry until they'd already split. They were fellow champions of his, thick as thieves. Vyneia had an advantage over Wrathion in being a girl Midha's own age, even if, being that Vyneia was a blood elf, they were on opposite sides of the faction war.
Eventually, something happened between them. Only the two of them know exactly what it was, but afterward, Vyneia was presumed deceased-- until she resurfaced as a void elf, having joined the Alliance.
Kairoz: Anduin was the only one who knew. He envied her for it. He saw Kairoz dab at her scrapes after a bout against a Celestial, reverse wounds, and speak to her like a peer. Like a woman to his man. He saw him teach her to dance. Nobody ever treated Anduin like that.
But that, too, would pass.
Anduin:
Deep down, Anduin had always viewed himself as the moral object: perpetually acted upon, unable to meaningfully impact the world on his own. He had a feeling about Midha, falling in with rogues, no fixed home beyond Wrathion's side.
That feeling utterly failed to stop him. And Midha liked to come to his room when she couldn't sleep: she must have known he couldn't either.
He had one week of stolen touch, stolen dreams, a future he was sure he'd wrest out of Wrathion's hands. Anduin was older, after all, and Wrathion really had no idea what he was getting into.
In any case, she was Anduin's champion now. Maybe Wrathion would come back for her wedding. Maybe Wrathion would envy Midha like he did. Maybe Wrathion would settle down, too.
A week later, when his trajectory faltered and his heart had finally started to slow down, he went out to Lion's Rest.
He asked his father for guidance, and heard the wingbeats of the Mawsworn.
...Now we arrive at Dragonflight.
There are two factors which shift the dynamic in Dragonflight: first of all, Wrathion has a family. The days of being asked whether Midha's a black dragon too are largely over: the other black dragons are right there at the Citadel.
Second of all, Anduin is gone. Wrathion's lost the devil he knows, and replaced him with a dozen devils he doesn't.
In Dragonflight, the relationship between Wrathion and Midha can best be described as overt.
Baskilian pulls Midha aside to warn her about Wrathion, and Wrathion responds by inviting her out on a canoe trip. He asks about Anduin, and when Midha explains in the politest, vaguest terms possible, he breaks aloud: "What he's done to you, he's done to me."
"I could still look through your eyes if I wished to, champion."
"All the care you should have for yourself is mine."
"Our two comprise the only one on Azeroth."
"If it must be someone, then let it be you!"
It's only one night. He holds Midha for so long she nods off against his chest. In the morning, they've washed ashore near the Ruby Life Pools.
Of course, he isn't the only black dragon anymore. And even if he were, his isn't the only flight. And even if it were... there's still Stormwind.
After another long excursion, Midha returns to the Citadel and apologizes. "There's the Mother Oathstone, and Stormwind, too."
He's not sure if what he does next is premeditated.
In what Wrathion calls a 'fit of the dual soul,' he breaks into an outraged laugh-- and then grabs Midha and forcibly kisses her.
"Tell them. Tell whoever would do the same to you: that I've fully lost my mind. That I've laid claim to you, and I will not allow so much as a word to spread against it.
Some will be revolted, yes! But they will revile me, and count you as a casualty."
When he comes to, he goes to bathe in lava.
He does it again, of course. Midha doesn't know how to stop him, or if she even should. There are broodmothers smaller than Wrathion: drakes are always enlisted where dragons are scarce. And she suspects it's nothing but jealousy: pure, white-knuckled loneliness, and maybe it's the fault of the knuckle-white Sha that seems to ruin everything she doesn't leave behind.
He kisses her so often that Sabellian catches him, and scolds him: "You flout nature like a hand-reared pigeon after its master."
And Wrathion responds: "She is my sister, Sabellian."
"How fortunate," Wrathion says, "that you may never understand. To be a son of one's daughter. A creation of one's creation."
Wrathion's prayer: It will have to be someone. Let it be her.
Midha's prayers have stopped.
Of course, there will always be more to complicate the dynamic. But that's for when I talk about Zafirria and Anduin.

The Sims 2 - GameSpy
Lifetimes of fun in one game
By Dave "Fargo" Kosak | 5/17/2003
It's always a trip to compare the reactions of the die-hard gamers on the GameSpy Forums to the reaction of the mainstream market when it comes to the original Sims. Many hardcore gamers never really got into this landmark game, but people around the world bought it (and all its expansions) in droves. The Sims was as much a toy as it was a game; it was like putting people in a fishbowl. It spawned a frenzy of online community activity, with people sharing houses, outfits, furniture and stories with one another over the 'net.
Count me among those addicts. There's something irresistible about guiding little people through little lives, making big decisions on their behalf. So I was stoked to see that The Sims 2 adds a great deal to the heart and soul of the game while retaining what made the original so compelling. Players will see two big differences this time around: The game is fully rendered in fluid 3D, and characters now live out their lifespan. Yep, your young handsome Sim will eventually grow grey and stooped. The latter change really enriches the "Sim experience."
Taking the Sims to a Whole New Dimension
Grandma lays in with the smack talk.Unlike the fixed perspective featured in the previous game -- where you could only rotate the camera 90 degrees -- Sims 2 is rendered in a full 3D engine where the player can zoom in, zoom out, and rotate the camera freely at will. The engine in the demo was immensely polished, with smooth animations and a great framerate. Marble surfaces were slightly reflective and the walls, floors, and furniture were rendered in extreme detail.
During the demo, we witnessed another new effect. It started to rain. The lighting of the scene changed as the dreary clouds moved in, and the Sims themselves all reacted with dismay as the raindrops came down. (The unfortunate Sim who opted to remain in the hot tub was in for a shock when the lightning struck...)
The new perspective allows you to really see the characters.Amateur architects will appreciate the new building options and the freedom they have to build houses in 3D. You can now build modular stairways with curves, for instance, instead of standard straight stairs. You can have multilevel foundations, including a basement. The pad they were showing off for the demo was a classy affair with a wrap-around deck outside the second floor that had a pine wood staircase along the outside of the house. You can also now build windows on any wall, including diagonally-oriented ones, fixing a pet peeve I had with the original. In the final version of the game, players will also have a lot more flexibility with decor. So when you buy a new couch or chair, you'll finally be able to upholster it to your tastes!
Another real advantage to the new engine is that you can zoom in way closer to the action. You can really see the Sims and their facial expressions now, so the whole experience is a lot more personal. This also helps to highlight the major changes in the new version, which allow you to customize Sims like never before and watch them change over time.
"You can play a whole lifetime now," Producer Margaret Ng explained as she showed off her family. "There's consequences now. What you do before will affect how you are now." One of her Sims, for instance, was a successful well-kept businessman who had eaten right and studied hard while growing up. Girls were all over him like paste on a science fair project. His buddy, however, was a slovenly guy porking out on pizza who had a gut to show for it. "But you can work on yourself..." Ng said. She brought her Sim over to the weight machine and, just to show off this feature, we were able to see him buff up before our very eyes.
So your Sims change based on their behavior. They also change with the passing of time. You can start a character at any age, and as you play, you'll watch that character grow and then grow old. Yes, you'll eventually die of old age ... but by then, your children (and even grandchildren!) will have hopefully grown into productive Sims of their own. "The key concept is generations," said Charles London, the Creative Director for the project. Unlike the previous game where babies grew into kids and then stayed that way forever, this time around you'll raise families from scratch and every new family member will become a playable character for you.
It was all fun and games before Teddy double-dipped the nacho cheese.Living out a whole life means that decisions you make early on are all the more important -- if you really want to rise to the top of a career ladder, you'd better do it before you get too old! Similarly, the way you raise children has a big impact on the game you're playing. A Sim raised in a good household will develop different habits and personality traits than one who grew up eating paint chips off the floor of the bathroom.
Talkin' 'bout My Generation
So, now you can get married, have children, and watch them grow into adults and have children of their own. This highlights another new feature of the game: Genetics! Sims will no longer be flat characters created by mixing a head with a set of clothes.
Instead, when you want to create a new character you have a great deal of freedom picking out facial features. You can "mix and match faces like paint," according to London, creating a truly unique Sim. Faces are completely sculpt-able. You can thicken a character's lips, give him bonier cheeks, or chisel his chin. You can even create something outrageous: The demo had a convincing Mr. T, Mr. Spock, and even a green alien with bulbous black eyes. Because of the new 3D engine you can zoom in and see these unique faces during gameplay, and no two people will have identical Sims!
The facial features and personality traits of a character form his or her "genes." When two Sims breed, the game mixes up their genes to create an all new Sim. The result is a kid that eerily resembles both parents, not unlike real life. The fun part comes when you breed bizarre couples: When an attractive blonde female Sim and the green-skinned alien Sim got it on in the genetics demo, the kids that were generated varied from wide-eyed pointy-eared humans to downright goofy looking green kids with black eyes.
If the character-generator and breeder alone sounds like a fun toy, you're in luck. Maxis is planning to release these tools to tinker with online before the game even ships.
The new Sims were much more aware of their environment than ever before. As they walked around the room they looked at each other or at different objects. "They really have an awareness of each other ... they're social people. Er, Sims," said Ng. Zoomed in close, you could see a range of facial expressions as they interacted with one another. As before, the presentation is like real-life, but exaggerated and sometimes comical. When two Sims decided to bring on the nasty in the hot tub, the action was obscured by bubbles but you could see bare arms and legs flailing out occasionally. And the two of 'em looked pretty satisfied when it was all over.
One of the things that I've always felt appealed to devotees of the original Sims was the fact that you created a "story" as you played. You created a sort of family saga, almost without even trying. With the new additions to the sequel, that game element is strengthened. Every Sim's story has a beginning, a middle, and an end ... but the family lives on, generation after generation, leaving behind a shared history. If it all comes together, Sims 2 should be ten times as addictive as the first.
And that scares me.
Will Wright spoke to us about the game on E3 LiveWire. For a little more about Sims 2 and the vision behind it, you can listen to an archived audio interview with Sims creator Will Wright recorded at GameSpy on day two of the show, part of our LiveWire Audio Series. Sims Online may not have hit all the right buttons with gamers, but Sims 2 definitely shows that there's still a lot of magic in this franchise. Stay tuned to GameSpy for details!

A drill instructor at a vocational school in central Russia has reportedly been fired after an incident in which he forced a student to kneel for an extended period of time and threatened to tase her as punishment for smiling in class. According to the student’s lawyer, the instructor’s regular misconduct was an open secret at the school — but because he’s a police lieutenant, parents were afraid to speak out. Meduza lays out what we know about the situation.
A drill instructor in Russia’s Sverdlovsk region has been fired from his job at a vocational school after he forced a 17-year-old student to kneel in a corner and threatened to shock her with a taser because she smiled in class, local news outlets reported on Tuesday, citing the student’s lawyer, Sergey Barsukov.
“The girl has arthritis, and she told [the instructor] about this, but he didn’t listen and continued with his class [while she kneeled in the corner],” Barsukov told journalists. “One day earlier, he put a different girl in the corner and hit her with a belt in front of everyone.”
According to Barsukov, the instructor is a senior police lieutenant named Ivan Korsak. The lawyer said that Kosak had repeatedly reminded students of his position in the police force and that he asked them to pitch in money to buy “gifts” for him. “These [gifts] included alcoholic beverages and computer games. We have screenshots of the kids’ payments,” Barsukov said.
The lawyer also said that school administrators and the students’ parents knew about Korsak’s behavior but did not report him because they feared retaliation from the police.
Korsak, for his part, insisted to multiple Telegram channels that his punishments were meant in a “joking” manner and that he didn’t intend to humiliate anyone.
The regional branch of the Interior Ministry told It’s My City that it has launched an investigation into the instructor’s behavior.
In September 2022, an article appeared on the school’s website titled “Ivan K’s Story of Success,” apparently referring to Korsak. It quotes the policeman as saying that he decided to teach at the school because “every citizen should serve their Motherland, defend it, and glorify it with successes and heroic feats.”
“Now, Mr. Korsak is an example of what a modern policeman should be. And he acknowledged that he gets a lot out of interacting with students as well: it improves his skills and allows him to learn new things,” the article says.

Shortly after the arrival of the 7th fleet, Jaina had insisted that one ship, the Starsword, be dispatched to bear the civilians of the city who wished to leave to safety. All of the children went aboard, and many of their families. Others chose to stay. It was their home; they loved it as Jaina did and wanted to defend it. Ratchet would have been the first choice, and from there the ship would have traveled to Stranglethorn. Unfortunately, while the goblins who ran Ratchet were neutral considering the flood of Horde that had recently passed through that town, Ratchet was deemed far too unsafe for Alliance refugees. So instead, the Starsword had sailed for Gadgetzan. - The Tides of war.
I am pleased to report that the battle goes well, Warchief.General Nazgrim says: Our forces report major victories off the coasts of Tanaris and Tol Barad. - Nazgrim, The Art of War.
The Theramore civilians may not have come from that battle. They may have been captured in S. Barrens or Dustwallow. - Dave Kosak.
