Coming up on a year since NCIS: Los Angeles’ swan song, Daniela Ruah pulls double duty this Monday, April 15, during CBS‘ NCIS line-up.
First up, Ruah reprises her role as Special Agent Kensi Deeks (via an MTAC video conference) during the NCIS franchise’s milestone 1,000th episode, which airs at 9/8c as an episode of NCIS. Then at 10 pm that night, you have the NCIS: Hawai’i episode “The Next Thousand,” which Ruah directed. (Ruah previously directed a half-dozen NCIS: LA episodes, as well as the recent NCIS episode about a kidnapped fiancé.)
TVLine hopped on the phone with Ruah to ask our No. 1 burning question about her NCIS “1,000” cameo, and then talk up her helming of the NCIS: Hawai’i episode about a U.S. Army SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) training exercise on the Big Island that turns extremely deadly.
TVLINE | First of all, because Kensi dials into MTAC from her car during the NCIS franchise’s 1,000th episode, I need to know: Did you film your scene while you were in a drop-off line? [Laughs] No, I actually filmed that while I was directing in Hawaii. They were like, “Can we fit this into your schedule?” and we were like, “Well, we can’t make it look like I’m in Hawaii.” So, we had to go back and look at pictures of what Kensi’s car looked like to try and get something as similar as possible, to look like Kensi is in her car. I couldn’t even remember, to be honest with you, what brand she drove — I was so immersed in the Hawaii episode – but listen, I wouldn’t have it any other way. To be invited to be a part of the 1,000th episode was such an honor. It’s too big of a deal.
Tumblr media
TVLINE | Turning to NCIS: Hawai’i, the episode they gave you to direct is crazy intense. Once you saw what it was going to be, were you charged up? First of all, the fact that all three showrunners wrote it, Jan [Nash], Matt [Bosack] and Chris [Silber], that right there tells you that there’s probably going to be, you know, a little more craziness, or it’ll be more out-of-the-box. I don’t know why, but I always perceive that when a showrunner writes something, they get extra creative.
Tumblr media
TVLINE | I think about the specific challenges that this episode must have presented you as director, and not only is almost all of it outdoors, but it’s in the jungle. Did you have to learn anything new in that respect? Yeah — wear long pants and long sleeves, and bring mosquito spray. [Laughs] No, every time I direct something, even if it was still on [NCIS: LA], you’re always learning new things. Here I’m working with a new crew, with a new director of photography, so everybody’s going to teach you new things. Even stunts — when Tennant gets [spoiler], they said, “Here are things that we could do…,” which then allowed me to get creative with the way it was shot.
Tumblr media
TVLINE | My next question was actually going to ask, where was that area of volcanic rock? Because it made for some stunning shots. That’s a place called the Lānaʻi Lookout — and there’s water right behind those rocks. I mean, we were literally on the ocean, so we had to adjust the camera angles to hide the water. Like, you shoot one inch to the left or to the right, and all of a sudden you’re exposing the fact that you’re actually not in this barren, isolated area. That’s the strategy and the magic and the figuring out that I have to do as a director.
TVLINE | The episode opens closes with some nice scenes between Tennant and Kate (played by Tori Anderson), which is a character dynamic the fans enjoy. What were you looking to capture there? First of all, [Vanessa and Tori] are both absolute sweethearts, and they have such amazing chemistry in real life, so it’s not a hard thing to do scenes with them. But yeah, you get this contrast of a character, Tennant, who is experienced and can improvise and who has kind of “seen it all,” versus a newer agent who’s really eager to do well, but she’s super by-the-book.
Tumblr media
TVLINE | The Sam/Kate scenes are also interesting because — and this didn’t dawn on me until Kate mentioned it herself — they hadn’t really interacted yet. Exactly. Yeah, I love that conversation that Kate and Sam have at the desk when she’s just kind of struggling to figure things out, and he tells a little story of his own past and his own experience….
TVLINE | Sam specifically shares with Kate some advice he once got from an agent “much wiser” than him. I tried Googling the line he says, but came up empty. Was it from any NCIS: LA episode? Maybe it was Hetty…? I know that there is one Easter egg [in the episode] from Gibbs, and so maybe the other one was Hetty. Maybe. I’m not sure!

Actually to start. Is she just crunchy or like really believes that everything not natural is poison or what
okay she kind of is in the middle? she was born and raised on the island of Lānaʻi, the smallest publicly accessible island in Hawai'i. it has a population of approximately 3.3K and only has one school, hospital, and notable settlement.
98% of the island is owned by a man named Larry Ellison- and that fact is what sparked her hatred for america, capitalism, and all that shit.
she is so completely within her own native culture because of how its been erased. ask her about the story of Kauluāʻau, the unruly Maui prince banished to her island, and she will tell it with pure excitement. or Puupehe, a princess from Maui captured by a warrior from Lāna'i.
she hates unnatural medicines because she will always see it as inferior to herbal remedies- they've been around longer and worked, of course they're better.
her entire family lives on the outskirts of Lāna'i City, near the coast, where they grow herbs, food, and anything they could ever need. they distill their own water, and shun most modern things.
but, when time came for aonani to join the community school when she turned 14, she recieved a message that she would be leaving for japan. and joining hpa.
she doesnt like japan idk sfjtjg

Lying at the foot of the mountain’s northeastern side is the Big Island’s largest city, Hilo. And about 45 percent of historical eruption sites have departed the volcano’s summit for lower elevations. Over the past 3,000 years, the geologic record testifies that the volcano has, on average, erupted every six years. History warns us that Mauna Loa’s current silence is anomalous. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory/ESW Image Bank right: ©Ken Lund, CC BY-NC-ND 2.0. Parts of Hilo are built on lava from eruptions that occurred over the past couple of hundred years. Or, get a bird’s eye view of this and other Hawaiʻi Island volcanoes on a helicopter or airplane tour with one of our local guides. When Mauna Loa last erupted in 1984 (left), lava came within 7 kilometers of Hilo (right). For current weather information, park closures and safety precautions, check the NPS Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park page before your visit.Īn easier way to experience Maunaloa is to drive the spectacular Kaʻū Scenic Byway, which extends from Kona to the southernmost tip of the island of Hawaiʻi and meanders around the base of Maunaloa through sections of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Hikers must obtain a permit before hiking or camping on the volcano. Backcountry camping is permitted at Maunaloa, and there are two cabins where through-hikers can bunk for up to three nights. These hikes should only be attempted by experienced hikers in good physical shape, as the high altitude, harsh climate and challenging terrain make the trek extremely difficult – and dangerous. Though less accessible than its neighbor, Kīlauea, Maunaloa’s summit can be reached on foot via backcountry hike. Scientists monitor Maunaloa 24/7 for seismic activity, releases of volcanic gas and other signs of unrest deep within its dome-like mass. The sleeping giant last erupted in 1984, when lava flows came within five miles of the town of Hilo. Maunaloa has erupted 33 times since 1843, making it one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. In fact, Maunaloa is so huge that it forms half of the landmass of the Island of Hawaiʻi – an area nearly large enough to fit all the other Hawaiian islands combined! It’s no mystery why early Hawaiians gave this massive shield volcano the name Maunaloa, or “long mountain.” One of two volcanoes that make up Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Maunaloa rises more than 13,000 feet above sea level and extends another 42,000 feet beneath the ocean and seafloor. The Makapuʻu Tide Pools, including a small blowhole, are quite popular and can be found just down from the first set of whale information signs. The Molokaʻi Channel runs right past the Makapuʻu Lighthouse, so this is also a great place to spot whales using on-site telescopes during whale watching season between December and May. Two other smaller islands, Mānana (the larger of the two, also known as Rabbit Island) and Kāohikaipu are also visible just offshore. You can even see the island of Molokaʻi in the distance. This moderately easy hike pays off with breathtaking views of the indigo ocean and Oʻahu’s eastern, or Windward Coast. Renovations were recently made to the lighthouse and the trail was recently repaved and additional lookout points were added. On the eastern most point of Oʻahu sits the Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse, a shining beacon built in 1909 on a 600-foot sea cliff overlooking Makapuʻu Beach-a stretch of sand known as one of Oʻahu’s best bodysurfing beaches-and family-friendly Sea Life Park.įifteen minutes past Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve and beyond Sandy Beach (another popular local beach) you’ll find the large parking lot that leads to the 2-mile paved trail overlooking the lighthouse. Launipoko is a small island community located on the coast of Maui County in the Hawaii Islands, USA. It has one of the most gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean in all of West Maui. Other surrounding islands like Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe or Molokaʻi can make the view in the background look even more splendid. This area is also known to be a fantastic viewpoint for catching a glimpse of marvelous humpback whales who frolic through the Pailolo Channel. Fortunately for new comers who don't know the place, there are cab services in Launipoko that can help you travel easily across the islands.

Lanai Nickname: The Pineapple Isle
Lanai (Hawaiian: Lānaʻi, Hawaiian: [laːˈnɐʔi, naːˈnɐʔi], /ləˈnaɪ, lɑːˈnɑːi/,[2] also US: /lɑːˈnaɪ, ləˈnɑːi/,[3][4]) is the sixth-largest of the Hawaiian Islands and the smallest publicly accessible inhabited island in the chain.[5] It is colloquially known as the Pineapple Island because of its past as an island-wide pineapple plantation.[6] The island's only settlement of note is the small town of Lanai City. As of 2012, the island was 98% owned by Larry Ellison, co-founder and chairman of Oracle Corporation;[7] the remaining 2% is owned by the state of Hawaii or is privately owned homes.[8][9]
Lanai is a roughly apostrophe-shaped island with a width of 18 miles (29 km) in the longest direction. The land area is 140.5 square miles (364 km2), making it the 43rd largest island in the United States.[10] It is separated from the island of Molokaʻi by the Kalohi Channel to the north, and from Maui by the Auʻau Channel to the east. The United States Census Bureau defines Lanai as Census Tract 316 of Maui County. Its total population rose to 3,367 as of the 2020 United States census,[1] up from 3,193 as of the 2000 census[11] and 3,131 as of the 2010 census.[12][13] As visible via satellite imagery, many of the island's landmarks are accessible only by dirt roads that require a four-wheel drive vehicle due to the lack of paved roadways.
There is one school, Lanai High and Elementary School, serving the entire island from kindergarten through 12th grade. There is also one hospital, Lanai Community Hospital, with 24 beds, and a community health center providing primary care, dental, behavioral health and selected specialty services in Lanai City.[14][15] There are no traffic lights on the island.

A New Hawaii Flag
from /r/vexillology Top comment: * The field of the flag is composed of eight horizontal stripes, symbolizing the eight major islands (Hawaiʻi, Maui, Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi, and Niʻihau) * The colors alternate between red, blue and white symbolizing the courageous heritage, connection to water and the ocean, and commitment to peace respectively. Together, they also are the American colors denoting the status of the State within the Union. * At the flag’s center is a circular green shield representing environment and the Circle of Life; bearing a native Kanaka Maoli kahili, the original Hawaiian royal standard taken from the banner of the the Kamehamehas, defacing two crossed pointed paddles, meant to represent the voyaging tradition of the Native Hawaiians. The ensign is gold to denote prosperity and commerce.

Nā Kai ʻEwalu: The Eight Seas
Tumblr media
Nā Kai ‘Ewalu is a poetic reference to the Eight Seas, or rather, the ocean channels that link the Hawaiian Islands together. Though technically, there’s nine. These channels are…
‘Alenuihāhā between Hawaiʻi island and Maui
‘Alalākeiki between Kahoʻolawe and Maui
Keʻalaikahiki between Kahoʻolawe and Lanaʻi
ʻAuʻau between Lanaʻi and Maui
Pailolo between Molokaʻi and Maui
Kalohi between Molokaʻi and Lanaʻi
Kaʻiwi between Molokaʻi and Oʻahu
Kaʻieʻiewaho between Oʻahu and Kauaʻi
Kaulakahi between Kauaʻi and Niʻihau
It can also be a reference to the eight Aliʻi (historic rulers of Hawaiʻi).
Kamehameha I
Kamehameha II - Liholiho
Kamehameha III - Kauikeaouli
Kamehameha IV - Alexander Liholiho
Kamehameha V - Lot Kapuaiwa
Lunalilo
David Kalākaua
Queen Liliʻuokalani
This reference however, doesnʻt include her highness Premier Kaʻahumanu. The Premier assumes the role of Monarch upon the death of the King, and on the day of King Kamehameha IV’s death, Ka'ahumanu III proclaimed her brother as successor to the Throne.
Nā Kai ʻEwalu could also refer to the eight islands of Hawaiʻi themselves, along with their common color, “flower”, and mountain emblems.
Hawaiʻi - red, lehua, Mauna Kea
Maui - pink, lokelani, Haleakalā
Kahoʻolawe - grey, hinahina, Puʻu Moaulanui
Lānaʻi - orange, kaunaoa, Lānaʻihale
Molokaʻi - green, kukui, Kamakou
Oʻahu - yellow, ʻilima, Kaʻala
Kauaʻi - purple, mokihana, Kawaikini
Niʻihau - white, pūpū, Pānīʻau

Island Weirdness #42 — Tall Owls & Short Ibises
The complete lack of land mammals on the Hawaiian islands left the terrestrial predator niches available to birds — and it was owls who ended up taking advantage of that role in the ecosystem.
The Grallistrix owls were found on Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, and Maui, with each island having its own endemic species. They were a type of true owl, probably descended from a species of Strix, and developed especially long legs that led to their nickname of "stilt-owls".
The Molokaʻi stilt-owl (Grallistrix geleches) was the largest of the four known species, about 60cm tall (2'). Although it had proportionally short wings it was still capable of flying, and probably specialized in stalking and ambushing smaller birds like Hawaiian honeycreepers in the dense forests.
(These owls were also the inspiration for the pokémon Decidueye!)
Tumblr media
Meanwhile the forest floor insectivore niche was occupied by Talpanas on Kauaʻi, but on the other main islands a different type of bird took up the same role.
Apteribis was an ibis closely related to the modern white ibis and scarlet ibis, with three different species found on the islands of Maui, Molokaʻi, and Lānaʻi.
The Moloka'i flightless ibis (Apteribis glenos) was a typical example of the genus, about 50cm long (1'8"). It was flightless, with reduced wings, and had unusually short stocky legs that gave it proportions much more like a kiwi than an ibis. And it probably lived very much like a kiwi, too, probing around in the forest litter with its beak searching for snails and other invertebrates.
We even have an idea of the coloration of these birds, thanks to subfossil remains with preserved feathers. They seem to have been brown and beige, similar to the juvenile plumage of their close relatives.
Tumblr media
The arrival of humans at least 1000 years ago would have unfortunately been devastating to both the stilt-owls and the flightless ibises. The combination of hunting, habitat destruction, and invasive dogs, pigs, and rats attacking them and their ground-based nests probably drove them all into extinction very quickly.

June 11th is King Kamehameha Day, a Hawaiian state holiday in honor of Kalani Paiʻea Wohi o Kaleikini Kealiʻikui Kamehameha o ʻIolani i Kaiwikapu kauʻi Ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea (1736?-1819), also known as Kamehameha the Great.  The day honors King Kamehameha’s achievements in uniting and governing the islands of  Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and Hawaiʻi into the unified Kingdom of Hawaii between 1795 and 1810.
The hand colored photographic print above shows Kilauea volcano, located on the island of Hawaiʻi. It was created by photographer Itaro Morihiro (1889-?), and was acquired by Pierre S. du Pont and his wife Alice during their 1920 trip to Honolulu, Hawaii.
