#LCDP Talk
Note
Hi Bel! Some LCDP thoughts because I like your analysis. If Tokio were a man, she'd be the standard of action movies: reckless, head on, unpredictable, hardened. If Rio were a girl, on the other hand, he'd be the typical love interest: vulnerable, sensitive, emotional, kind. Do you think if the gender roles had been inverted in the script, there would be a different audience reception for their characters? Thank you!
[ WHY ISN'T TUMBLR NOTIFYING ME ABOUT NEW ASKS?! PT. 3 ]
Hi, anon! Aww, thank you so much, I do like to rant about LCDP and it's almost unbelievable someone out there actually reads my shenanigans… 🤭
Now shortening it for those who don't:
YES, I've been saying that for ages now. I'm pretty sure Tokyo would be a fan favorite had she been a man. She's reckless, tough, short fused, hot blooded, bloody hot AND has her heart in the right place - damn! the masses would have loved a male character like her. Loved and lost before so became a lone wolf, got the walls brought down for love again and eventually dies for the family? Male!Tokyo would be right there next to Berlin in fandom preferences, being shipped together and ruling all the other ships. But Tokyo was born a woman, therefore, she had no excuse to be that great. She was always prone to be hated. Misogyny runs deeps within fandoms, even though most people don't want to admit it.
Not so sure if female!Rio would be better accepted, though. Misogyny runs really deep - female characters are not allowed to be tough and reckless (or they'll turn into 'bitches'), but they also can't be vulnerable and sensitive (or they'll be labeled as 'useless'). I mean, look at the audience's response to Mónica/Stockholm's inner struggles through part 5… Rio was the youngest of the gang, he was 'hired' to be the hacker, then they put guns on his hands and became the one who got caught, underwent some terrible torture, and when he starts displaying evident signs of PTSD, both characters and audience dismiss his feelings and push him to "toughen up". I feel like such arc would always vote them to be part of fandom's least favorites, but Rio as a girl might have gotten less hate for not having as many expectations attached.
And by ' audience, ' of course, I'm referring to the most vocal part of the fandom. It's my overall understanding from casual viewers that Tokyo was pretty cool and Rio was just a boy trapped inside a man's body. But you probably already know that… 😉😊

Andrés does not love women, he is simply in love with love and that is why he feels some things for Martín, because he loves his person and not the idea of his gender or of being with him.
"In love with love" - anon, I agree with you 100% (but maybe you don't necessarily agree with my some of my "why")
Andrés loves being in love more than he's ever loved any of the women he's been with. Andrés is a misogynist, I'm 100% sure I wrote about this at length both on Tumblr and mentioned it in as many fics as it was plot/character-relevant. That man does not like or respect women, we constantly see him treating women as disposable and only useful to him for as long as he gets what he wants out of them/the relationship.
He basically says that "five minutes of passion" with him is better than Camille's entire eight-year marriage (really, he's doing her a favor). It doesn't even have to be intentional, it's when you think so little of other people you hardly see them as such. He consciously fucks up Camille's life (and she gives a huge helping hand, don't get me wrong; instead of seeing all the red flags he's throwing - hello, multiple references to bullfighting from the show?? - she's immediately down for cheating on her husband) all the while knowing he'll skip town and all consequences in just a couple of days.
His love for Martín is different than his love for all the women in his past, and yes - it's because for the first time he actually loves the person and not the new-relationship-high he gets from a new person. Also, if they never get in a relationship, that new relationship high can cause no relationship crash, right?

Raquel and Alicia would be in the berlin spin off? What do you think of that? What possible plot line that could have fit in with them?
This simultaneously came as the biggest surprise related to the spin-off possible and also completely unsurprising LMFAO. A few weeks ago, @roccinan and I were joking about this exact same thing and went if 'what if instead of everyone else, Alex Pina gets Itizar to play Raquel in the spin-off, wouldn't that be insane?' And as always, the conversation took so many different turns and twists and we joked about everything but I think we both concluded that it actually wouldn't be that insane and that it's HIGHLY plausible if he did want to do it. Because Raquel is a major policewoman/detective in Madrid and it would actually be very interesting if we watched her rise as a policewoman in parallel to Andrés rise as a thief; they are both young and still haven't made that formidable name but they are incredible at what they do and show this potential and as a viewer knowing how they end up it would be very cool. And the other thing we talked about would if basically Raquel is just running around the city always constantly 'nearly' catching Andrés but he always slips out of her finger at the last moment and maybe she doesn't know 'who' exactly she's looking for, and maybe she does.
What I want to say is, they are many scenarios they could fit in because it's not at all weird that a major policeman like Raquel would be working on a major heist case in Madrid. And putting Alicia in too, makes a lot of sense because they graduated together and it's very likely they worked together on some cases, and also very cool because their dynamic obviously have a lot of fans. And it's basically two spin-offs in one: one based on Berlin and his rise, and one based on Raquel's younger years in the force.
That's on one hand, on the other, it was a genius marketing trick by Pina because he's basically ensuring at least 80% of the original audience will watch the spin-off now. Either because they genuienly just love Raquel (which most general audience and also fandom do), or now they will be waiting for any 'prequel' thoughts on serquel (and the serquel fandom is hugel), or for Alicia, the s3 villain that gained a huge amount of fans.
Bottomline is, I think it's something that is making me way more excited for the show (and I already was) and will have the same effect on many other people. And I think it promises that the show will be pretty fun, playful, and paying homage to the original show. So overall, a good move (they obviously can ruin it in the show itself, but until now, it seems very promising to me); I can imagine a lot of storylines that can organically involve Raquel and Alicia, and on a marketing level, I think it's genius to ensure the show is watched by enough people to get a second season, which I believe what Pina wants and is planing for.

Hi! Did you watch Korean Money Heist? I have mixed feelings (definitely not on the level of s1 of lcdp, but some things were better in the remake, for example: less sexual harressment), but really loved Denver, one of the highlights of the show. What did you think? (if you already watched)
Hey, anon! Glad to hear from you! 😃😄
Yes, as a matter of fact, I did; I missed Denver and Mónica too much and was very curious regarding the korean take on them. And in what comes to the ship, I absolutely adored it. They took a proper pace with the development of their relationship, added some new dialogues that were truly appreciated and the actors are on point, their chemistry is adorable. *-* I was actually going to make a post about it, but you arrived first so I'm taking my chances. 😅
I've seen some people complaining about how it follows the same storyline but, c'mon, that's exactly what a remake is. They even tried to fix some issues that failed through the original, so I had my fun watching the korean version, even if it missed the human warmth and attachement that made us fall in love with this show in the first place. Of course La Casa de Papel will always be La Casa de Papel, don't get me wrong; comparisons will happen, but they're not necessarily fair...
Now with spoilers under the cut:
Denver was, once again, the show's major highlight to me. Found him a little more silly and less impulsive than original Denver (his wide spectrum of emotions was what made the character more charismatic and allowed Jaime Lorente to display his enormous acting range), but Kim Ji-hoon made him so enjoyable to watch and easy to root for, I was very impressed. 🥰🥰 Didn't get attached to their version of Moscow as much as the original, probably due to the lack of ties to other characters that weren't his son, but their scenes together were a pleasure to (re)watch.
Yoon Mi-sun was a bit more discreet through these six episodes, but then I remembered that Mónica herself didn't fully shine until part 2, so I hope to see and learn more from her in the second half. There were some minor big changes made to her story - Cho Young-min is much more abusive than Arturito and in this version her pregnancy turned out to be a lie - that I'm still not sure how to feel about, but I'm definitely curious to see where they'll lead her. Right now, I think her arc might be related to the political aspect of this version, her being from the North and trying to bring her family to the South... I don't know a thing about korean politics, but I'm willing to learn.
Can't say I'm one hundred percent confident Denver and Mi-sun will have the same happy ending as Denver and Mónica, but I certainly hope so. Thought they were at least showered with the same amount of softness and careness as the latter; even their sex scene, despite not as intimate, was filled with sentiment so, good sign, maybe...?
I don't have many other things to add outside of their characters and relationship. The concept of 'found family' played a major role in the reason why we fell in love with La Casa de Papel, both characters and actors, and I don't think the team from Money Heist: Korea is there yet. I highly appreciated Rio's backstory as a former medical student, which gave more sense to the healthcare scares they went through, and Berlin has been called out on his cold erratic behaviour, which is a win to me. Couldn't really identify with their Professor, though, and the switch of Tokyo and Nairobi's personalities didn't please me either.
So, yes: mixed feelings is the perfect way to put it. Will I come back when they release the last six episodes? You can bet I will. If not for the show, I definitely will for the ship. Jaime and Esther gave me a lovestory for the ages, but Kim Ji-hoon and Lee Joo-bin are doing a great revival of it.
Thank you for this moment, anon. Hope you're having a great weekend. ❤️🖤

What do you think about Raquel's story? I am with the majority (I guess), that she was better as the inspector than Lisbon, however, I think the downgrade of her came in s2, when she let Sergio win and later went to living with him in Palawan. It's not that I don't think strong women can have love story, but in this particular case, I didn't like this ending (of s2) for her. and after that, her lack of importance in s3-5 wasn't that surprising.
Uh-oh, anon, you're opening a very dangerous door right now. I'm going to put this under a 'read more' since I have some strong and unpopular opinions regarding this topic:
To be honest, I don't think the majority liked Raquel better as the Inspector - at least the most vocal majority in social media. She's a very popular character within some circles and has a large, very present community of fans everywhere. I constantly read her stans claiming her evolution to Lisbon as one of the best developments in the show ( sometimes even on television... ) and Lisbon as a remarkable, if not THE strong female character prototype.
I just happen to fail to see her as such.
Raquel was one of my favorite characters back in P1-2. I loved her wit through the exchanges with the Professor, her braveness amidst her anxiety, the way she kept her head high despite the pressure from the audience and even her (male) peers every time she made the wrong move. Raquel sat next to Berlin and didn't allow him to play mind games with her, she entered the tent and covered Tokio to keep her dignity after her capture. I wanted her to win in some capacity just to show her superiors that she was indeed capable of doing it; I was very glad at the way she found out about Salva's true identity and dealt with it. Raquel wasn't perfect - trusting a stranger with what was possibily classified information regarding the heist, I mean...? -, but that's what makes you connect with the character. Plus, her actions were at the very least understandable: she confided in Salva when she needed to confide in someone, as she tried to keep the balance between the pressure of the case and what was left of her relationship with an abusive ex-husband. Even when she lets the Professor go at that final confrontation, you can feel her sense of betrayal colliding with the realisation that she still has feelings for him, which I found very human of her.
To me, meeting him at the Philippines would serve fine as a closure to the show. The problem was that, eventually, the Philippines weren't the end and the characters were brought for part two. And I guess TPTB didn't know what to do with Raquel anymore. It's only my interpretation, but I think her character only fit the narrative as the antagonist and the Professor was never meant to be in a relationship; I definitely don't think they were expecting the ship to become so damn popular and it somehow forced them to find a balance between giving the fandom what they wanted and keeping faithful to their own character construction - if there was ever one. I can't be sure for Raquel, but I just can't belive becoming a husband and father was ever part of the original plan or Álvaro's construction for the character.
And please, don't get me wrong, I do believe there were real feelings involved between those two and I do think the ship had a lot of potential, but in the end the writers falted the most with them. Sergio and Raquel's entire arch failed to give us the most important piece of their story, of Raquel's story: how did she overcome his betrayal and (re)started a happy relationship with the same man who used her to gain advantage in his chess game. I think the fandom forgot too easily that Raquel had just walked out of a physical and emotionally abusive marriage; it's the first time she falls in love after Alberto, and Sergio gains her trust only to use it against her and her work. How can you (re)build your confidence after it?
Plus, unlike Mónica - who seems to be constructed as a lonely character whose job doesn't meet her needs anymore -, Raquel has a steady place in her 'pre-heist' life. She likes being a cop, despite their prejudiced ways, and she has at least a mother and a daughter who require some stability. And they all agree to move to the other side of the world to live with the guy who she was chasing just a couple months ago? What happened to the custody disput? And lone-wolf Sergio, is he ready to share his home, his life, with a whole family all of sudden? With the same woman he was ready to murder simply because she * might * have known too much? You know, I was at least expecting some answers during her tough but necessary confrontation with Alicia, someone who actually knew her before, but Raquel's responses remained as vague as " not even in seven reencarnations you'll ever understand the nature of our love ", like...??
That was why I was hoping for a different ending for Raquel. I wanted her to double-cross them in the end; she was no longer a cop, but she wasn't a member of the resistance either. I wanted her to harbor some mixed feelings about Sergio, to make him taste his own poison. But she would learn about the other members and she'd become more aware at how the system failed them; maybe she could advocate for people like them. I know Raquel was a good person trying to make a difference. But they didn't allow her to, they did her miserably in the end and for that I'm sorry for her.

i hate berlermo.
Tumblr media
okay, HEAR ME OUT FIRST!! do i hate the ship? yes. absolutely. does that stop me thinking about them every second of the day? no. i am in so much pain help me.
want to start with talking about berlin. he is a straight man. martín was NOT his bisexual awakening or something. he. is. a. straight. man. they could not work and berlin made that very clear on multiple occassions. he is also an egomaniac. he has so many disorders, and while i dont want to portray him as some heartless monster (because he isn't!! he cares about himself but that doesn't mean he doesnt care about others too!), i find it hard to believe he didn't keep palermo around to mess with him.
the kiss scene between andrés and martín is the root of a large majority of martíns issues. we see throughout the series that palermo is withdraw from his emotions and love, he has attatchment issues, and he has not moved on from berlin even two years later. he hasnt let himself recover from his death, and his loss of a hopeless, unobtainable love. when berlin kissed him, they both knew that would be the last they saw of eachother. they both knew berlin was willing to let himself die (both because of his illness and his love for his brother) during the heist. it left palermo with false hope, that maybe something could have come from it. but there never could have! that is their last interaction, and that is the last thought he leaves with martín. i wholly believe berlin was fully aware what that would do to him, and left with that as a little "you won't be forgetting me :)" because everything with berlin is Him Him Him. without the kiss, martín would have been able to heal so much quicker and easier.
palermo doesn't start to heal until two years later, when he gets involved in the bank heist. up until that point he blames sergio for the "love of his life"s death, but slowly comes to realise that this group of people that berlin died for are the most caring people. he begins to understand it. they are hurt, they have losed loved ones too, they are risking everything for a loved one. they are so much like him. does he make mistakes? YES! so does everyone in the group, but it is in his nature to stir trouble when he doesn't get his way. did his actions have awful consequences because of that? unfortunately, yes! but he regrets them. he is forgiven, even by those he probably shouldn't be forgiven by!
by the end martín is so much more in touch with his emotions, he realises that he doesnt have to settle for unobtainable love, and he can be loved unconditionally. he went into the bank heist for berlin, but came out of it with so much more. palermo would not have been in the place he was in by the end of it if andrés was still around.
money heist was so refreshing to watch as a queer person. queer relationships were not perfect. i understand the appeal of berlermo, i really do, but they are so unhealthy. i understand the need to cling onto any sort of gay rep because its so scarse in mainstream media, but there is so many queer stories in this show, and none of them are appreciated as much as berlermo, which i find kinda weird!! why is a relationship with a gay man and a straight man more adored than helsinki and palermo? two gay men who helped eachother through SO MUCH! what about the beautiful platonic soulmate relationship between helsinki and nairobi? what about the amazing transwoman, who was such a genuine representation of some trans struggles? please stop prioritising the cishet in queer stories. berlin is so important to so many characters, especially martín, but him as a love interest to martín shouldn't be the main focus in his story, because his whole arc was getting over him and moving on. in reality, he made martín the most unhappiest he had ever been.

What are your impressions of the berlin spinoff new characters?
Hi Anon!
Thx for asking & mainly for giving me the chance to rant, I have a lot to say about this topic.
Sit back, this is gonna be a long ride.
I'll be honest, first impression was "lol, they're joking"
Second, I was quite annoyed.
Third, I am genuinely angry.
And I'm not even talking about Berlermo here, of course it's a bold move ignoring Martín in the spinoff, because, you know, timeline???
And don't get me started with Sergio, because I'm almost sure it will be a tough challenge to pretend that Andrés is an only child...
And while Pedro Alonso is a great actor and I'm 100% sure he'll fulfill his role at best, they're basically asking us to ignore that he's a man in his 50s playing a character in his 30s. Just because.
Also, they keep telling that "they want the show to have its own identity"; but that makes no sense, neither promotionally nor narratively. A spin-off works as soon as it has a link with the main show, there's plenty of examples around, eg. Better Call Saul. None of us would've watched without the promise that one day it would've crossed Breaking Bad's path. And I really don't get this urgency to move away from the original show: Berlin is a character from LCDP. Ignoring that LCDP ever happened will:
1) Keep away casual viewers
2) Disappoint shippers, fans and the whole fandom.
But, aside from that, let's get back to the real matter here: the new characters look like cartoons.
And I don't mean good cartoons, like those we used to watch as kids. I'm talking about, meaningless, silly, stereotypical, poorly made cartoons.
Now, I may not be Alex Pina, bit that sounds a little bit off from the mood here?! When the hell did Andrés become a comic figure being friend with a bunch of other caricatures?
If they wanted to make something with "feel-good" vibes, they could've pick any other LCDP character (Nairobi laundering money, Denver illegally fighting, Bogotà inseminating random women all around the world), literally anyone...
But no. They've chosen the terminally ill misogynistic dude dying by suicide in a tunnel.
Don't know what you think, but that doesn't sound very "comical" to me.
Berlin is a dramatic character. And although he has his good dose of irony, humor, sarcasm, paradoxes, he doesn't fit in an anime-style cartoonish kids show, because it flattens him as a character.
So, I don't what they're trying to do here, but it would be like taking Alicia's story with German's cancer and turning it into a rom-com, only without German, who's now replaced by a random dude who never had cancer in first place.
Not even telenovela style. Just cartoon.
Last but not least, and I'm pretty sure this is something that most of us noticed, they tried to give Andrés a whole new gang... Which is basically a bad copy of the original one.
There's a Denver, there's a Rio, there's a Tokyo, there's even a weird version of female Martin and, best of all, a "lifetime friend" dressing up like a fake Professor.
How are we supposed not to compare these action figures to the characters we know and love? The worst part is that they all look like Rafael, mere blueprints of characters, never mentioned before and, most likely, human plot devices subservient to a retcon.
And to attract what kind of an audience, exactly? I've never seen an Andrés fan who was not fond of Berlermo. Not. A. Single. One.
But during last days, I've seen a lot of people being very disappointed by how OOC their favourite character is going.
The only chance for the spin-off to be renewed and become something good, maybe even overcoming the original, was giving to Berlin's character some kind of depth.
Exploring his relationship with his brother, his years with Martin, what his family background is, why his homosexuality denial, why did he became a sexual predator, and maybe leaving some space for characters who maybe have still something to say, like Marsella & Bogota.
They've chosen not to. They've preferred to take a good, deep, captivating character and make a parody out of him.
What a waste, really.
I know it's too early to say. I know that they said "we can't announce members from the old gang cause it would be spoiler". I know that probably it's a little better than it seems.
But even if Martin shows up, what kind of show is this gonna be?
Don't know what to think, but the premises aren't that good.
-
So here's my 2(000) cents about this.
What about you, anon?
