We watched Laal Singh Chaddha last night. It’s an adaptation of Forrest Gump, which I had seen when I was very young and Sophia never did. (Afterwards, watching FG, we kept seeing things that we had seen as gifs, or referenced in other films.) Some thoughts:
1. Forrest seems more sexually entitled than Laal, and is honestly quite cruel to Jenny in parts. FG is slightly shorter than LSC, so we don’t get as many scenes with he and Jenny together, trusting and liking one another- he’s a guy she knew in primary school, not a potential husband.
2. Jenny has more agency than Rupa does, but is repeatedly punished for it by the narrative. Certainly Rupa is never shown to use drugs, although there is an implication of promiscuity that’s not made as explicit as it is with Jenny. Rupa died of Woman Syndrome, as far as I can tell, not HIV. I also think Jenny has more inferiority than Rupa- she’s shown as being passively suicidal while performing at a strip club. Either of those things would rob Rupa of her rôle as love interest.
3. Forrest Gump has references to 90s American things that were presumably funny at the time, but really didn’t age well.
4. We were joking about all the gorgeous landscape shots being ‘brought to you by the Indian Bureau of Tourism’, but they’re in the original. America is pretty also.
5. The ‘dance moves’ scene is changed from Elvis Presley to Shah Rukh Khan, and honestly it works really well, it’s very funny.
6. I think the framing device of being told on a crowded train and having different people react in different ways honestly works better- however LSC loses the narrative parallels of Jenny and Bubba both being kind to him on buses and the school bus scene being repeated with his son.
7. There’s someone out there majoring in both International Relations and Film Studies who just found a thesis topic.
8. I cried in Laal Singh Chaddha. I didn’t with Forrest Gump.
