Auf Tafel 52 des Mnemosyneatlasses findet sich in der oberen linken Ecke die Fotografie eines Geburtstabletts.
Dieses Tablett ist ein Wendeobjekt, es hat eine Vorderseite und eine Rückseite, abstrakter gesprochen ist das ein Polobjekt. Aby Warburg erwähnt das Bild, das auf der Vorderseite oder Oberseite dieses Objektes gemalt wurde und den Titel "Trajans Gerechtigkeit" (giustizia di traiano) trägt, auch in dem Text, der später als Einleitung in den Bildatlas dient, um zu erläutern, was er unter dem Zusammenhang von Distanzschaffen und Polarität versteht. Er erläutert es, um amphibolische Symbolgebungen zu erklären. Trajans Gerechtigkeit ist ein bekanntes Motiv aus der Literatur und der Ikonographie des christianisierten römischen Rechts.
Warburg erklärt seine Vorstellung von polarisiertem und polarisierendem Distanzschaffen im Hinblick auf Symbole, die er polar nennt und die sich dadurch auszeichnen sollen, dass sie einerseits reproduziert werden, anderseits an ihnen etwas ausgetauscht oder umgewidmet wird. Einfach gesagt behalten sie die Form und wechseln den Inhalt. Das sind insoweit sog. Kontrafakturen. Die Zweideutigkeit des Bildes wird einerseits historisch verstanden. Ein Bild hatte erst eine Bedeutung, dann ein andere, zweite Bedeutung. Schon diese Zweideutigkeit kann man als Polarität verstehen, auch wenn das vielleicht nicht ganz dem Alltagsverständis von Polarität entspricht. Man würde vielleicht eher von Zweideutigkeit oder einem Bedeutungwechsel sprechen. Polarität geht mit ein Spannung oder Energie einher, deren Vorliegen in einem Fall des historischer Umdeutung nicht gleich einleuchtet, wenn man davon ausgeht, dass die Zeit irreversibel verläuft. Sogar die Vorstellung von Zweideutigkeit ist dann nicht unbedingt einleuchtend, man könnte ja sogar einwenden, zu jedem Zeitpunkt sei das Objekt eineutig gewesen, nur habe zu einem Zeitpunkt eben die Bedeutung gewechselt.
Hier von Polarität zu sprechen, ist also kommentierungsbedürftig. In der historischen, zeitlichen Dimension kann man davon ausgehen, dass Warburg eine Beobachterperspektive unterstellt, einen Beobachter in einer weiteren, vermittelnden Zeit, der in der Gegenwart, also gleichzeitig, auf unterschiedliche Zeiten schauen kann. Er kann sowohl auf das Florenz des 15. Jahrhunderts als auch auf das spätantike Rom zu der Zeit, als der Konstantinbogen entsteht (auf dem man ein Vorbild für dieses Tablett findet) blicken. Aus einer Gleichzeitigkeit unterschiedlicher Zeiten in den Augen eines Beobachters ergibt sich eine Spannung, die es schon eher nahelegt, von Zweideutigkeit oder wie Warburg von Polarität zu sprechen.
Der Beobachter kann pendeln, er kann den Blick von der Spätantike zur Renaissance und zurück wandern lassen. Warburg geht aber weiter, weil er die Vorstellung von Polarität nicht nur auf die Zeit bezieht. Grundsätzlich bezieht er sie auch auf den Raum, also auf Geographien, die er in einem allgemeinen Sinne erst einmal über Himmelrichtungenbeschreibt: Norden, Süden, Westen, Osten. So bezieht er sie auch auf Pendelbewegungen, also schlicht auf das Wandern von Symbolen. Er bezieht der Polarität (besonders deutlich in den Arbeiten zu Sasseti auf Gesellschaft, also unter anderem auf gesellschaftliche Stellungen, die man mit den Positionsbestimmung oben/unten beschreibenund aus weiter noch af stratifikatorische Differenzierung oder 'Realwidersprüche', auf jeden Fall auf gesellschaftlich Spannungen beziehen kann. Für das Tablett ist wohl der letzte Bezug besonders wichtig, nämlich derjenige zur Psyche, also zu Zuständen, die von der Psychologie im Zusammenhang von Polarität (heute etwa als Hoch- und Tiefphasen) beschrieben werden. In bezug auf die Psyche ist es vielleicht am naheliegensten, zwei Bedeutung zu unterscheiden und zu verknüpfen, in diesen Vorgang als Spannung und Energie zu beschreiben, weil hier die das Pendeln deutlich in der Alltagserfahrung verankert ist.

Italienisch werden solche Objekte als desco da parto bezeichnet. Die Bezeichnung für dieses Objekt konkurriert mit der Bezeichnung für Madonnen, zumindest in den Gegenden, wo die Madonna von O oder Madonne del Parto verbreitet ist (also besonders in Italien, Portugal und dem Nordosten Brasiliens).
Ich spreche auch in bezug auf dieses Objekt von einem Polobjekt, ich meine damit Objekte, die etwas bewegen oder durch etwas bewegt sind, das man auch zeitlich, räumlich, gesellschaftlich oder psychisch verstehen kann. Die Bewegung dieser Objekte kann eine Bewegung durch den Raum oder durch die Zeit, durch die Gesellschaft sein, es kann eine psychische Bewegung sein, sogar eine Animation, eine Motivation, ein (An-)Treiben oder sogar eine 'Ursachensetzung', die insoweit ein Effekt wäre, der Gründe annehmen lässt, seien es Tatsachen, Sachverhalte oder Normen. Mit kehren, wenden, kippen, beugen sind solche Bewegungen gemeint. Es sind Bewegungen einer Umordnung oder Umsortierung, den etwas wechselt seine Stelle oder seine Bahn.
Die italienische Bezeichnung für dieses Tablett legt eine andere Übersetzung nahe, man müsste das desco da parto direkt übersetzt als Scheideobjekt, Teilungsobjekt bezeichen, gemeint ist direkt eine Geburt. Grautheoretisch gesagt: ein Moment, in dem aus einem Menschen zwei werden. Der Vorgang der Bewegung der Scheidung und Teilung ist ein Vorgang, in dem Subjekt verdoppelt und gespalten wird, und man wünscht, dass nichts entzwei gehe. Das geht mit Bewegung, mit viel Energie einher, das ist Spannung. Das sind Objekte, die Differenz operationalisieren, mich interessen daran die Effekte, unter solchen Effekten verstehe ich Normativität. So eine Objekt ist eine Norm, es ist normativ, denn es hat die Effekte operationalisierter Differenz. Ist die Geburt gelungen, ist dieses Objekt eine Referenzobjekt. So etwas soll übergeben werden, dann soll es inder Familie bleiben, es soll sogar vererbt werden, das sind verbindliche Objekte, Pflichtobjekte, Lastobjekte. Sie tragen was. Landet sowas im Museum, hat das etwas von geschlossenen Zechen oder rekonstruierten Gerippen ausgestorbener Gattungen. Sie sind dann "noch schön".

Diese Objekte tauchen in italien nach einer der letzten großen Pest, in der Zeit hoher Kinder- und hoher Müttersterblichkeit auf. Sie tauchen in Lagen auf, die in dichter Weise affektiv und rational besetz sind, in den Momenten, in denen die Reproduktion des Geschlechts, in denen Zukunft (auch als Fortführung von Vergangenheit) auf dem Spiel steht. In einem Katalog des Metropolitan Museum of Art steht mit leichter Zurückhaltung, diese Objekte seien wichtige symbolische Gaben ("important symbolic gifts"). Ich bin mir unsicher, wie metaphorisch es wäre, wenn man an diesen Objekten 'neuralgische Stellen' beschreiben würde, gut möglich, das dies kein Fitzelchen metaphorisch ist, gerade weil sich die neuralgische Stelle durch die Körper, Zeichen und die Psyche derjenigen zieht, die mit diesen Objekten hantiert haben.
Gelinde gesagt ist es 'voraussetzungsreich', wenn Aby Warburg im Einleitungstext des Atlasses ausgerechnet an so einem Objekt kurze Hinweise zur Polarität gibt. Seine Vorträge dauerten länger.

Dieses Tablett wird gebrauch, das ist Gebrauchsware und ein minderers Objekt. Es wird geschenkt, übergeben, es wude auch als wie ein Bild an Wänden aufgehängt oder auf Gestelle in Regale gestellt, aber bei allem ist wichtig, dass esein minderes Objekt blieb. An dem Objekt des Tabletts bleibt wichtig, dass es etwas tragen kann, das kann man also auf das Tablett stellen, tragen, dann herunternehmen. Jetzt ist das Tablett leichter, jetzt kann man es wenden und auf die Unterseite schauen, wo sich (un diesem Fall) auch ein leichters Bild findet. Auf der Oberseite sieht man die Szene von Trajans Gerechtigkeit, auf der Unterseite ein putto mit einem Trömmelchen und einer Flöte. Auf der Oberseite des Objektes erscheint Pathos, auf der Unterseite Subtiles.
Die Polarität, die Warburg im Einleitungstext nur in Bezug auf das auf der Oberfläche gemalte Bild als eine 'innere' Polarität' dieses Bildes beschreibt, setzt sich fort, wie in Wellen, die sich um die Stelle ziehen, an der man in ein Wasser einen Stein geworfen hat, 'um der Welt ihre spröde Fremdheit zunehmen'. Die Wendung des Tablett wiederholt die innere Polarität des Bildes und trägt sie aus, sie verbreitet und verbreitert sie. Mir scheint es wichtig, wie sich an diesen Objekten etwas durch die Körper, die Zeichen und die Psyche, auch den Geist, zieht und wie sich gleichzeitig etwas vom Material in Vorstellungen zieht, wie sich etwas vom konkreten Vorgang ins Metaphorische zieht, nicht einseitig, zweiseitig.
Was hier passiert, was hier durchgeht, wird aufschlussreich mit einem begrifflichen Setting beschrieben, das Latour in seinem Essay über die Verfassung der Moderne und seinem Entwurf einer symmetrischen Anthropologie angeboten hat. Hier zieht sich etwas duch menschliche und nichtmenschliche Stellen, der Vorgang kreuzt durch Kategorien, die von manchen modernen Wissenschaften sauber getrennt werden, insoweit hat man es mit einer Hybridisierung oder Vernetzung im Latourschen Sinne zu tun (die dementsprechend von Reinungsarbeit begleitet werden kann).
