A-T-3 251 Lacksley Castell - Princess Lady
Tumblr media
A Barbie doll released in 1983, here are the other dolls Mattel released in 1983
I saw the Barbie IP cash-in movie yesterday. Friends have been telling me about this movie all summer and opinions have been flung about all over the socials so here's my unwanted and unasked for take
What struck me about the movie was just how mediocre it is. It's a film about Mattel more than it is about women, women in it are their customers, it's real cleverness is that it may convince parents to choose Barbie for their children when Mattel is drowning in an overcrowded market and Barbie is beginning to look like a relic from darker times to American customers - Barbie sales have been declining in recent years. To use a popular stock phrase, you have been served... kerching!
If Mattel could go on Oprah and pour it's heart out over the mistakes it's made in the past and tell us it gets it now in order to revise its legacy in a world that's moved on, the Barbie movie would be that interview. Mattel we forgive you, sob sob... kerching!
The Plastic Karen Phenomenon
Mattel don't really get it though. I've read the 2010s described by historians 'the decade of women' - meaning majority white western (with a tendency for being) middle-class women. Priyamvada Gopal made the comment that it speaks to emotionally dead societies. The emotions in the movie are triggered by a thought of death (followed by flat feet and cellulite!) Gopal points out the arrogance of this when vast numbers of women (she says 'people and animals' but Barbie is about women and by women I mean Mattel) around the world 'have no choice but confront death in their everyday lives:' fleeing danger and risking their lives on 'small boats,' crossing the Mexico/US boarder (have you seen Greg Abbott’s buoy “wall” in Texas?), at the hands of the police like Breonna Taylor and many many nameless others around the world, journalists like Palestinian American Shireen Abu Akleh, just by trying to get an education like Malala Yousafzai, trans girls and women like Brianna Ghey and Naomi Hersi - it's a very long list and I could go on and on (that's the point) but we shouldn't ignore deaths from wildfires and flooding, starvation from the destruction of food chains, displacement and migration all these things should be a bigger story than the Barbie movie. For certain their are children who have had to flee in a hurry and they have one toy and it's a Barbie (that it's a Barbie says more about globalisation and corporate monopolies than it does about Barbie as a role model.) In todays globalised corporate world Mattel would never have gotten away with stealing the idea and design for Barbie from German toy manufacturer Greiner & Hausser
Of course Mattel needed a blockbuster and the film really reminded me of the Lego movie from a few years ago
Today's music: Princess Lady is the title track from Lacksley Castell's second and final album, sadly he passed away in 1983 at the age of 24. The Impression's Minstrel and Queen (Queen Majesty) has been hugely popular and influential on Jamaican music and Princess Lady is a similar theme, although here Castell wants to own the poor woman and lock her in a castle! One of my favourite records is Autopsy by Fairport Convention written by Fairport vocalist Sandy Denny, appearing on Unhalfbricking in 1969. The song has an unusual structure but the middle verse goes
Come, lend your time to me, And you will know that you are free. And when you look at me, Don't think you're owning what you see, For remember that you're free, And that's what you want to be, So just lend your time to me
Lyrics aside Princess Lady is a great album. It was mixed by Mad Professor and dubs appear on his In a Rub a Dub Style album

Legendary Poet Mutabaraka Re-emerges With Black Attack Produced By Mad Professor
Tumblr media
Dub poet Mutabaraka ceases a 14-year break with the release of "Black Attack" produced by Mad Professor. The dub prophets reconnect to make a perky song about everything in the way of progress for Black people. Mutabaraka's list of problems is serious but Mad Professor's rhythms sound festive despite the gloomy poetic assessment. He explained how the song happened in a statement, “'Black Attack' is attacking all the things that are keeping black people from progressing after 500 years of slavery and now colonialism, I had connected with Mad Professor over ten years ago and he actually sent some riddims but we didn’t connect again until last year when I was in England.”
The single is the first from Mutabaraka's upcoming album also titled Black Attack. He is just as concerned with Black life and freedom as he was when he started publishing his poems in the '70s. His Cutting Edge and Steppin' Razor radio shows were another place where he shared his strong opinions and they were two of the most popular shows in Jamaica. Mutabaraka and Mad Professor performed together at Rototom Sunsplash in Europe earlier this month. Black Attack comes out on October 6th via Shanachie Records.
