Maltese Cross Seeds Lychnis chalcedonica, Jerusalem Cross Flowers Silene chalcedonica B100 Maltese Cross Seeds Lychnis chalcedonica, syn. Silene chalcedonica This rugged, easy-to-grow 2-3 ft. tall perennial produces brilliant scarlet flowers in dense clusters of 20-50. Bloom is in June and July. Maltese Cross is stunningly grown alongside plants with gray foliage or white flowers. Likes regular water and will even thrive in boggy conditions. Winter hardy to zone 3. Maltese Cross are grown from seeds. They can be directly seeded into your flower garden, or seeded indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost in your area. Sow seeds early in the season, and cover lightly with 1/8" of fine garden or potting soil. Maltese Cross seeds germinate in two to three weeks. Maltese Cross grows nicely with Sunburst coreopsis, Amber Wheels gaillardia, and Royal Wedding Oriental poppy. Perennial, Lychnis Maltese Cross, also called Jerusalem Cross, is a sharp-looking, attractive red flower. They are drought tolerant and easy to grow. Maltese Cross is perfect to brighten up your flower garden. The flowers will attract butterflies in the summer months. Maltese Cross plants grow two to three feet tall. It has dark green leaves, located opposite each other on the stem. Stem and leaves are "hairy". Florets have four petals in a cross shape. A rounded flower head has many florets. By far the most common color is a deep red or scarlet red. Red-Orange is also common. White and pink varieties also exist, though they are less common. Maltese Cross is native to Russia and Siberia. Historians believe the Maltese Cross flower was brought to Europe during the Crusades of the Middle Ages by the Knights of Malta. This Middle East connection also lends to its another name, the Jerusalem Cross flower. Maltese Cross is also called: Burning Love Flower. Plant Maltese Cross in the back of the flower garden. They are also used as border edgings. Try them in naturalized landscape settings, too. Plant Height: 36" - 48" Common Names: Jerusalem Cross Latin Name: Lychnis chalcedonica Species Origin: Introduced US Wildflower Type: Garden Flowers Life Cycle: Perennial USDA Zones: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 US Regions: California, Mountain, Arid/Desert, Plains/Texas, Midwest, Northern, Northeast, Southeast Seeds per Ounce: 62,000 Stratification: No Stratification Germination Ease: No Stratification Sunlight: Full Sun, Part Sun Height: 30 Inches Color: Pink, Red Bloom Season: Blooms Late Summer, Blooms Early Fall Uses: Deer Resistant Growing Maltese Cross Lychnis Seeds Bee introduces how to plant Sow seed in cell packs or flats, press into soil but do not cover. Needs light to germinate. Kept at 70° F., germination averages 3-4 weeks. Transplant into the garden 12-18 in. apart after all danger of frost. Count: ~100 Maltese Cross is also known as Jerusalem Cross Flowers, Lychnis chalcedonica Plant Propagation: Maltese Cross are grown from seeds. They can be directly seeded into your flower garden, or seeded indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost in your area. Sow seeds early in the season, and cover lightly with 1/8" of fine garden or potting soil. Maltese Cross seeds germinate in two to three weeks. We recommend using a heated germination mat. The ideal plant spacing is 12" -15". Thin or transplant seedlings, if needed, when they reach 2". They will tolerate a little crowding. Established plants can also be propagated by plant division of the rootball. Separate and replant in spring or late fall. Days to Germination: 10 - 15 How to Grow Maltese Cross Plants: Maltese Cross plants are very easy to grow. The like full sun. They will tolerate partial shade. They prefer loose, rich soil that drains well. Maltese Cross plants are drought-tolerant, preferring soil on the dry side. It is important to avoid wet soils. Plants will not do well and will likely die in wet soils. Add a general-purpose fertilizer when planting them, then once a month after that. Once your Maltese Cross plants are established, they should grow well with few problems. Keep well weeded. Apply a layer of mulch to keep the weeds down. The "hairy" leaves and stems can catch garden debris. Be careful to keep them clean, while working with the plants. The plants will flower in the second year. Then, watch the butterflies flying over to the blooms. Deadhead the spent flowers, to promote continuous blooms all summer and into early fall. Remove the flower and entire flower stem. Maltese Cross plants are heat and drought tolerant. But, we do recommend watering them during the driest periods of summer. They will do well in mid summer's heat. Jerusalem Cross can be invasive. Use border edging, as needed. Edging should be four to six inches deep in the soil. Flowers Bloom: Summer Insect and Disease: Insect and disease problems are uncommon. http://springsofeden.myshopify.com/products/maltese-cross-seeds-lychnis-chalcedonica-jerusalem-cross-flowers-silene-chalcedonica-b100-1

A Spiral Seeded Thing
A small link between Texas and Malta. Medicago orbicularis is a small member of the legume family, with a minute yellow bloom that may go unnoticed in the verges of your paths and roads.  The seedpods, on the other hand!  Our new home has a sadly neglected lawn and garden – which I will be working on this evening – and we have the little Medick in abundance. Even more Mage references I guess???
So the land between the Dark Kingdom and Kupa was originally meant to be like Central Asian Steppes but I wanted it to contrast to the prairie of Kupa, so I also mixed in a lot of Western USA (such as Wyoming) with the canyons and plateau deserts. (Both for reference)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've said before that the High Elf Kingdom is based entirely on fantasy and no real world basis BUT that doesn't go for the Elven Forest that takes up most of the Elven territories. It's based on the Black Forest of Germany. I imagine Kupa and the Lost Forest were similar before it became destroyed/cursed. (Now it's also fantasy with no real world basis.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Landscape for current Kupa is basically the American Midwest/Great Plains except give it Medieval Britain's culture and society. No rolling hills or anything pretty just...flat. I know Britian can be flat but I'm talking endless landlocked nothing (except very pretty wildflowers at the right time of year)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Southern Kingdom, which hasn't been visited yet, is based on Malta. In the same way Neunbruck was the Swiss Alps entirely because I like the aesthetic, this is entirely because I like the Maltese aesthetic

Today is #26 in the #marchmeetthemaker series, the theme for today is self care. Starting a business as well as holding a day job as a single mom of 2 isn't easy. Making time for design & my embroidery craft takes up a lot of my time every single day. I am sitting in front of my embroidery machine or my laptop designing editing promoting my business, my work, etc. But...... My beloved two kids & my dog remind me of what is really important and to truly appreciate the rare downtime I have and make time for it.👩‍👧‍👦💙📸🌾🌷😏Self Care has many forms. Mine comes in the form of being in nature surrounded by the people I love the most! They remind me to care for myself. 💙😎So shout out to all the single moms out there! Sounds of Summer
The sounds of a Beck Farm summer were complete two days ago with the arrival of the turtle doves - first one purring in a thorn bush below the house and yesterday another in the blackthorn at the top of the garden - the concerted efforts of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust and other organisations are beginning to show a return - rough old thorn habitat is being left - not enough but an improvement, and these beautiful birds are at least hanging on to a few nesting sites.  All we need now is for the mainland European countries to stop persecuting them on migration and they could start to make a real comeback from the brink.  Sometimes a good outbreak of Covid has positive results as I would imagine the Maltese have been locked in during the migration of many warblers and turtle doves!  The other sound to round it all off was the return of the swifts to the roof of Beck Farm and yesterday their wonderful screeching over the garden table was uplifting.
A beautiful week of weather turned violently the other way this morning - yesterday was shorts weather and 23C with no wind.  Today is about 10, hat back on, and a howling gale from the north blasting the garden (again).  A few weeks ago this same wind wasnt such a bad thing - not great but not catastrophic, but today and tomorrow is a bitter pill when roses are just starting to show colour in their buds, and beautiful young foliage on copper beech and the like is being shredded.  However, these are the vagaries of climate change and will be with us for some time.  It is encouraging though to see the rise of both the general public and companies demanding more environmental improvement measures from the government following the reaction to less human activity.
Beekeeping has been the predominant activity this week - a second and third swarm due to the sudden rise in temperature - the Master beekeeper and his assistant have been very busy, they have manage to re hive one swarm, one got away and the other conveniently went in to the empty stump, that colony having died out in spring.  Honey has been taken - mostly rape honey which solidifies very quickly, but also some lovely comb which we have been relishing every morning.  Master beekeeper also went to help his teacher yesterday afternoon as she (Super Master Beekeeper) has been struggling to keep up with all her hives.  She has a very sick husband, now in hospital and is herself not the most fit of people due to a horrid virus years ago which attacked her balance. Therefore Master Beekeeper was absolutely exhausted and very hot having been in his suit ALL DAY!!!
All goes well in the garden which is marvellous!  The potatoes are mostly through now, the dahlias also and the night time frosts seem to have gone away.  Although still plenty of foes - rolling leaf on the roses, lily beetles still busy, and ants not always doing good, the absence of the main adversary is a good feeling.  Once the wind abates it should be warm enough to plant out the courgettes,  climbing beans,  Cosmos and Nicotianas.  Sweet peas are climbing now - they do require a lot of water to thrive and that is back in short supply. Although it is lightly raining now, I have had to water the veg again and little rain is on the horizon.  The tomatoes have been “set up” in the greenhouse.  Have sown some interesting new things - Lovage and Lemon coriander, and have transplanted the Cumin to the main raised beds - never grown any of these before and it will be both interesting and fun to see if they work.  Lovage of course grows huge so one plant will be enough and it needs a large space to live, but architecturally it is magnificent.  The sowing of seeds in modules to counteract ant destruction seems to work a treat and the beetroot I planted out two weeks ago look spot on.  I may have to do the same with spinach - it must be something to do with that family’s seed that ants just love as they never bother with lettuce or carrots!  Next spring’s purple sprouting broccoli is through as are the leeks so we are already preparing for winter!
The dogs continue to lead a charmed life.  Scout celebrated her 12th birthday yesterday with two lovely walks to the Jubilee wood in the village, followed by a long swim in the pond we cleared out last autumn which is now clean and deep.  She had several whats apps in from her friends and is having a restful Sunday.  Inca is a little lame really from having had too many walks!  She does love to run and run, and always wants to run as fast as she possibly can, somewhat pounding her left shoulder with her lead leg.  She is having a quiet few days to allow it to settle.  The ground being like concrete has not helped.  Mavis is being a darling - she is helping our neighbour to train his rather unruly golden retriever Callie by just being there and walking demurely to heel alongside Callie to teach Callie that other dogs are not always a reason to go mental!  We are beginning to win through and Callie is not pulling on the lead all the time, and is starting to understand rudimentary sit, stay, and retrieving.  We have just been out for a “lesson” and there is a noticeable improvement!  We finished with Mavis having some lovely retrieves which she did beautifully and it was good for Callie to just sit and watch.  Certainly the lockdown has been good for Mavis, her confidence has grown and grown and I am just sorry that we have not been able to do any competitions.  She should come in season within the month, and we now have a list of people interested in 6 bitches and 3 dogs so that will be something to achieve!
Most aspects of wildlife are good, newts are rising in the ponds, birds are feeding young, butterflies seem to be about though never enough, the moth trap has shown we have a good number of moths in the garden with the Poplar Hawk Moth present two nights ago.  The moonlight has been phenomenal so you can see the bats whizzing about the garden at dusk. The wildflowers too are improving despite the best efforts of farmers still showering margins with glyphosate.  I have just seen some lovely water avens down in a marshy area, together with marsh thistle - these were not here until recently mainly due to heavy handed use of broad leaf weedkiller.  Sadly the Parish Council have just sprayed all the open grass areas between the Jubilee Wood stands of trees apparently for ragwort - this is a bone of contention - read Wilding if you have not already done so, for a more tolerant view of ragwort.  Casualties of this spray include ribwort plantain, ordinary plantain, hawkbits and dandelions - all valuable for pollinators.  Walking the course yesterday also highlighted the fact that most of the ragwort seems untouched!
Wisteria and Maigold the highlights in the garden this week with Viburnum plicatum Mariesii dripping down over the pond.  Get ready to change your pots from spring to summer bedding - the garden centres will all be open this week just in time.

poster by @smoakingwaffles
Hey guys! This new story is the result of a collaboration between @kkruml, @smoakingwaffles and @whiskynottea and it’s inspired by the 101 Dalmatians!! Hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do!
Chapter 1. Chocolate and Ginger (by @whiskynottea)
Hello!
My name is Pongo, and I am the most adorable chocolate Labrador you’ve ever seen, if I may say so myself.
My ancestors were retrievers from the north. They lived in a faraway land, called Canada. You know, beautiful lakes, snow, waterfalls. I’m sure you’ve watched documentaries about it. I certainly have.
What was I saying?
Oh yes. My ancestors. They were trained to bring game back to hunters and this was what they mostly did. That’s why I have a soft mouth. But I don’t do that. Dead birds and rabbits are not my kind of game, thank you very much. Thank God, Jamie – my human – isn’t a hunter. But he does have a small red squeaking ball and I retrieve it faster than any other dog in the park.
Not to boast, but I’m the best. And he knows that, every time I return the ball to his feet, wiggling my tail.
Ah… Jamie. Let me talk to you about him, shall I?
I’ve know the man all my life. Three years and I think I counted more than 1000 days in them. But I might be wrong. I’m a dog after all, not Albert Einstein.
Anyway.
Jamie found me when I was a little puppy, deserted on the street. The people that bought me, they surely didn’t know that dogs bark. And cry. And pee. And poo. I think they believed I was like a moving stuffed animal or something. Every time I tried to talk to them, they hushed me. And when I was lonely at night and I cried… Well, they abandoned me. During winter. In the cold, freezing Glasgow.
Sometimes humans are worse than lemurs. Do you know the lemurs, that steal your food? Not the one that stars in ‘Magadascar’ and likes to move it. The others, the real ones. How do I know what they do? I’m a dog! I love watching TV!
So yes, some humans are worse than lemurs. And I don’t like having my food stolen AT ALL, mind that.
Fortunately, these people left me outside Jamie’s apartment building. He found me crying at night and he took me in. Next day he plastered posters with my picture – and I was looking adorable – and the word ‘FOUND’ on top of my head, but no one sought me. So Jamie kept me. The man was lucky, wasn’t he?
Lucky, but sometimes stupid.
He thought he was funny, but I’m saying stupid. Why? He almost named me Cotton from the Cottonelle toilet paper advertisement! And I say almost, because Murtagh, his godfather, hit him on the head when he voiced this thought. I guess that hitting a human on the head brings some sense back to him, because Jamie named me Pongo after that. And we’ve stayed together in his little apartment in Glasgow ever since.
I love our house. It is such a mess, with canvases around the living room and an easel on the corner, in front of Jamie’s chair. He has many paints and he calls them all with different names. The acrylic paint, the oil paint, the watercolor paint. But if you want to know, they are all the same. And he hates when I eat them. If you ever meet Jamie don’t try to eat his paints. The pencils either – he hates that as well.
Jamie is an artist. And I am a kind of an artist myself, you know. I’ve done this masterpiece with my paws – one purple, one blue, one yellow and one green. It was beautiful. Jamie thought that he might bring something of himself in it as well, so he brushed both hands with black paint and placed them between my paws. It is so good that we hung it above the couch, where we snuggle every evening. Even Jamie’s sister, Jenny, was speechless for a moment when she first saw it. Then she said “Are ye out of yer mind, brother?” She definitely liked it, to think that Jamie got out of his mind when he thought of this. As you may understand, I couldn’t let Jamie take all the fame for our work and I barked that it was my idea. Jenny scratched my ears, acknowledging my brilliance.
Every second weekend, Jamie and I ride to Lallybroch to see Jenny and her family. Being in the car is awful, but I always stick my head out of the window and feel the wind.
Have you ever tried that? It feels GREAT!
Anyway, Lallybroch is a doll. I can be free there, running on the green grass and eating all the wildflowers without anyone yelling at me. Jamie never lets me eat the things I spot in the park. He says it’s not safe. But in Lallybroch everything is safe!
The only human that really understands my happiness when I roll or run down the hill is the little one – wee Jamie. He runs with me – sometimes he rides me but I’m not a big fan of this particular game – and we play together. These weekends are the best. And I get far more treats from everyone, especially when I give them my foot. I don’t know why, but that gets them excited and they make the funniest faces. Wait until I turn around myself, I always think. Everybody is squeaking when I do that trick and Jamie gets so proud that his chest expands so much I believe it will tear his shirt up.
So… yes. My life is great. I guess you love me already but hold your horses. My human is Jamie and I don’t change him for the world.
There’s just one thing…
It would be great to have a mate. All these hours that Jamie paints, I have no one to play with. And I can’t deny that the possibility of my own little furry balls running around the house is quite enticing. I am a grown dog, you know.
As we speak, Jamie’s painting on a black canvas. A series of lines and smudges dot the surface… Oh now he’s huffing, and his red locks have shaded his eyes – that’s always a bad sign, I’m telling you. I think he needs a mate too, to take his hair away from his eyes.
What am I doing right now? I’m lying on my fluffy black pillow, watching out of our long window.
What time is it?
Oh, still four twenty. I have to wait for the clock to chime five o’clock, to take my beautiful black leash and push Jamie to the door so we can go out for our evening walk.
Living with Jamie is usually fun, but when he’s drawing his things paying no attention to me I get so bored!
We have to find company. But if I wait for Jamie to do that… We would stay bachelors for the rest of our lives.
Not that he’s not handsome. Well, he’s not as handsome as I am, but for a human I’d say he’s pretty great. He’s taller than the most, with more muscles. I’m sure he can beat everyone up if I get him into a fight. And the girls, they all look at him like he’s a big catch. He can’t see that, but I can. I’m not a bulldog – no offense mates but you’re not that smart.
But Jamie is stubborn. Have I told you that? Very stubborn. Every time he comes back home from a date and we’re alone on our couch he rubs my belly and says “No, Pongo. She wasn’t the one either.”
Where is this one? I’m getting frustrated.
But wait a minute! If he can’t find her, I will do it! And I will choose my own mate, too. Let me see what’s going on at the street.
Hmm…
Old lady with her little Maltese – no, too old.
Young girl with – Oh why do I even consider it? Too young!
Well, let me see this one. She is… different. The long brown skirt, the turtleneck black blouse… No. She won’t do either.
Now what is this?! High heels, long coat, hair perfectly coiffured… Let me see my mate as well… No. She’ll definitely not roll with me in Lallybroch. I have to say no.
Oooh. That isn’t as easy as I expected! We’ll stay alone in this flat forever!
Just... Wait a minute! What do my beautiful round eyes see?
Oh yes, she’s perfect. Blonde, long legs, perfect eyes…
Let me see the human, too.
Curly brown hair, jeans, plaid shirt…
Plaid shirt?! That’s the one!
Where are they going? They’re heading to the park! We have to hurry up!
Oh God, it’s still four thirty. Jamie won’t let his brushes down until five o’clock. We’re screwed – don’t tell Jamie I said that.
It’s four thirty, but what if it was five? What if I move the pointer just a little bit…
Yes that’s it.
The clock chimes and I’m jumping around Jamie, before going to stand in front of our door.
Let’s go, Jamie! Leash in mouth, paw on the doorknob.
Move your lazy ass!
It’s so good that Jamie doesn’t understand me when I talk like this. He would ban me from going out if he did, I’m pretty sure he would.
Is he coming? Yes, he’s coming. He finally got up from his stool.
Jeans, sweater, long coat… Perfect. That hair, though… Well, hers was not better! She could hide a month’s treats in there!
And off we go! We’re going to meet them!
My perfect blondie, we’re coming for you and your curly wig human!

For the spring asks, Blossom, Exciting, and Lemons 🌼🌿
Thank you so much for asking me! 🥰
Blossom: what's your favourite flower?
It used to be sunflowers for the longest time and then it changed to peonies for a little bit. I still very much love both but my favourite flowers are most definitely wild flowers. I know that's a bit of a cheat answer but bouquets made up of random wild flowers with bits of different foliage are my absolute favourite and I always have to have a wildflower bouquet in the house. They're just so beautiful and unique and I love them so so much 💕
Exciting: ideal type of unplanned adventure?
I would have to say one day roadtrips! I love waking up really early and being on the road and driving somewhere with a loved one and just ending up somewhere new and fun. My friend and I have done a couple of roadtrips and we always google any plant places we can visit in the area and we love it. Where as my boyfriend and I have done roadtrips to beautiful scenic places and some of my favourite places have been discovered doing one day roadtrips. They always make the best memories 🥰
Lemons: what's your favourite type of dessert?
My favourite has always been chocolate mousse! My sister's husband makes the best chocolate mousse for Christmas where he puts little different types of chocolates in to it (like maltesers) and it adds a whole new element to it. I will always make room for chocolate mousse 😍
