succession s4 e5 recap: swedish elon and his logan roy tribute band

time is a flat circle and we are back to ken hyping himself listening to rap, driving to the office.

anyone feeling nostalgic yet?

he is immediately caught off guard by the fact that roman and shiv are already there.

also he seems like the worst boss ever.

i really don't like ken when he is not hitting rock bottom.

(there is a movie about a sleeping robot in a cave that takes up too much time in this episode. let's not get into all that)

the old guard checks up on the CE-bros before their trip to norway.

Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara vs. Ricky Starks and Action Andretti -- Fine match. Jericho goes for a Codebreaker, but Starks catches him and lifts him up into a big sit-out powerbomb. Roshambo from Starks to Jericho on the floor! Garcia takes the bat to Andretti's face, allowing Guevara to land the GTH for the pinfall. Rating: 3

We get a video tribute for Jay Briscoe next.

Darby Allin (c) vs. Buddy Matthews for the TNT Championship -- Big jumping knee from Matthews out of the gate!!! Matthews slings Darby around, throwing him into the turnbuckle, dropping him hard on his back on the apron, getting him into powerbomb position and letting him hang as Matthews repeatedly swings his head into the barricade!! Matthew then goes for the powerbomb, but Darby reverses into a hurricanrana, sending Matthews into the barricade. Meteora off the top to the apron by Matthews! Darby with a stunner, then a Coffin Drop to the outside!! Big sit-out powerbomb by Matthews, but Darby kicks out! Reverse rana by Darby!!! Darby lands a beautiful crucifix bomb into a crucifix pin, but Matthews kicks out! Buckle bomb and a stomp to Darby's head by Matthews! Darby kicks out! Pumphandle by Matthews, but Darby reverses into a roll up! Matthews kicks out. Code Red by Darby!! Matthews kicks out again! Darby reverses a superplex attempt by Matthews into Scorpion Death Drop off the top! Matthews escapes the pin attempt, getting under the bottom rope. Darby goes to the top, and Matthews tries to follow, but Darby stops him with strikes and kicks!! Matthews is draped over the second rope, and Darby lands a Coffin Drop to the back and the back of the head of Matthews! Darby covers Matthews near the ropes, but Darby pulls Matthews' arms and legs in to prevent a rope break. 1, 2, 3!!! Darby retains!!!! Great match!!!!!!! Both guys were great!!! Rating: 3.5

After the match, Joe is on the big screen. He says Darby stole the TNT title from him, and it was the worst mistake of Darby's career.

Jungle Boy and Hook vs. Ethan Page and Matt Hardy -- Beautiful gut wrench suplex and t-bone suplex from Hook to Page! Hardy has Jungle Boy down and out, setting up for Twist of Fate, but Page insists that Hardy tag him in. This allows Jungle Boy time to recover and lock in the Snare Trap on Page for the submission victory. This was fine. Furthers the story of Matt being under the control of Ethan Page anyway. Hook was great here, as usual. Rating: 2.25

Family therapy with the Gunns and The Acclaimed. The Gunns tell Billy that the dream of the AEW tag titles was supposed to be fulfilled with them, not with The Acclaimed. Blah, blah, blah. Billy says he can't take this anymore and asks the Gunns what they want. They say they want the AEW Tag Team Championships.

Backstage, Renee asks Adam Page what is next for him. He says what's next is knocking out Moxley in Ohio. The match is set for Dayton next week.

Bryan Danielson vs. Brian Cage -- Cage basically dominates the match, targeting the arm that he was paid to break, until Danielson finally turns it around with a superplex, roundhouse kicks, and stomps to the head. Ankle lock by Danielson into a leg-capture German suplex, but Cage kicks out. Cage lands a buckle bomb and then goes for another powerbomb, but Danielson reverses with a roll up and gets the three count. Eh. Not the decisive way I would have wanted this match to end. Solid match anyway. Rating: 3

After the match, Cage continues his attack on Danielson's arm. MJF comes out, shoves a guy at the timekeeper's table, and takes the chair he was sitting in. MJF hands the chair to Cage, who wraps it around Danielson's arm and drives Danielson into the ring post. MJF tells Cage to put Danielson in the ring, then MJF stomps Danielson's arm and rains down right hands. Cage wraps the chair around Danielson's arm again, and MJF goes to the top rope, getting ready to stomp on the arm, but out comes Takeshita!!!! MJF runs and Takeshita takes Cage down with a jumping knee. The doctor is out to check on Danielson.

Backstage with Renee and the doctor, Danielson says he doesn't care about the doctor's medical opinion, he just wants to know if he can wrestle or not. The doctor says he shouldn't. Danielson does not care. He says he wrestled for 60 minutes with a separated shoulder before. He then addresses MJF. "You know what I think is behind the mask? Fear. Because you’re afraid of getting hurt, you’re afraid of being exposed, and you’re afraid that I am going to take the one thing that you value more than anything in this world. But when I do, I’m not just going to expose you. I'm going to show the whole world that what's behind that mask is a fraud."

Toni Storm vs. Ruby Soho -- Great stuff from Ruby here. Nice elbow/chop combo, jumping knee. Heel antics from Storm, faking an injury to bait Ruby in. Britt enters to distract Storm, and Ruby lands Destination Unknown for the win. This was fine, but I really didn’t care. Rating: 2

At least, that’s what the fans think of you, but I know better. I know that you're obsessed, just like I’m obsessed, with the Triple B, the AEW World Championship. This belt gives me a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Ths belt stands for the simple fact that all my blood, sweat, hard work, tears, and yes my sins, they were all worth it. This belt turns my catchphrase into a fact. This belt does make me better than you, and you know it. This belt is the only thing I've ever had in my life that makes me feel whole. And you wanna take that away from me, Bryan? Why? Don’t you have enough, man? Loving family, adoring fanbase, first-ballot hall of fame career? But no, you need to take away from Max. I know the real reason why, Bryan. Because just like me, you’ve got a hole in your soul, and you’re trying to fill it. But I’m not the one to get that job done, Byan. Bad things happen to people who mess with MJF in this company. Matter of fact, I remember knocking out some big British guy, kind of looked like Ellen DeGeneres on meth, it’s on the tip of my tongue. MJF says Tony Khan has put out an open contract for anyone to face Danielson next week, so he made a call to someone who loves inflicting pain and scientifically dismantling people limb from limb. He says it’s been a fun ride, but he’s afraid it’s over. He says roll the clip. They play a video package of Tim Thatcher!!! Hell yeah buddy, can’t wait for that match!!!!

Mark Briscoe vs. Jay Lethal -- Very emotional moment here. Huge chop exchange!!!! Blockbuster by Mark off the apron to the floor! Huge elbow by Mark off the top to the outside puts Lethal through the timekeeper's table!! Mark avoids a Lethal Injection attempt and responds with huge lariat!! Mark goes for the Jay Driller, but Lethal reverses, then Mark reverses with another lariat!!!!! Mark finally lands the Jay Driller for the pinfall!! Very good match here. It was great to see Mark. Kind of sad that they wait until Jay is gone to allow the Briscoes on AEW TV. Rating: 3.25

Lethal and Mark hug after the match. Current and former ROH wrestlers fill the stage after the match. Mark ends the show with the ROH tag titles held high in the air.

So alle 20 Jahre produziert Cameron Mackintosh eine Sondheim-Revue. Und zwar immer mit Julia McKenzie, die deshalb für diese letzte, besonders prächtige namens Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends, die halt leider zur Gedenkveranstaltung wurde, nach 20 Jahren erstmals wieder auf einer Bühne steht (das heißt ihr Auftritt in The Philadelphia Story, wo wir sie gesehen haben war wahrscheinlich der letzte), sie wirkt aber recht munter. Einige von Sondheims Alten Freunden sind natürlich inzwischen tatsächlich sehr alt, besonders zu erwähnen ist die 89-jährige Petula Clark, die jetzt wirklich mal befugt ist, I’m Still Here zu singen (sie ist inzwischen 90, haben wir leider verpasst, wäre natürlich ein prima Vorwand gewesen, Finian’s Rainbow anzuschauen...), die unverzichtbare Bernadette und viele, viele Londoner Theaterlegenden, von denen wir einige auch schon auf der Bühne sehen durften (einige sogar in Sondheim-Shows). Es ist wunderbar.

Good question:

In the United States, many jails and prisons can and will charge you money for every single night that you spend imprisoned, for the entire duration of your incarceration, as if you were being billed for staying at a hotel. Even if you are incarcerated for years. Adding up to tens of thousands of dollars. What happens when you’re released?

In response to this:

You’re getting charged, like, ten dollars every time you even submit a request form to possibly be seen by a doctor or dentist.

You’re getting charged maybe five dollars for ten minutes on the phone.

Any time a friend or family tries to send you like five dollars so that you can buy some toothpaste or lotion, or maybe a snack from the commissary since you’re diabetic and the “meals” have left you malnourished, maybe half of that money gets taken as a “service fee” by the corporate contractor that the prison uses to manage your pre-paid debit card. So you’re already losing money every day just by being there.

What happens if you can’t pay?

In some places, after serving just a couple of years for drugs charges, almost 20 years after being released, the state can still hunt you down for over $80,000 that you “owe” as if it were a per-night room-and-board accommodations charge, like this recent highly-publicized case in Connecticut:

Two decades after her release from prison, [TB] feels she is still being punished. When her mother died two years ago, the state of Connecticut put a lien on the Stamford home she and her siblings inherited. It said she owed $83,762 to cover the cost of her 2 1/2 year imprisonment for drug crimes. [...] “I’m about to be homeless,” said [TB], 58, who in March [2022] became the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the state law that charges prisoners $249 a day for the cost of their incarceration. [...] All but two states have so-called “pay-to-stay” laws that make prisoners pay for their time behind bars [...]. Critics say it’s an unfair second penalty that hinders rehabilitation by putting former inmates in debt for life. Efforts have been underway in some places to scale back or eliminate such policies. Two states — Illinois and New Hampshire — have repealed their laws since 2019. [...] Pay-to-stay laws were put into place in many areas during the tough-on-crime era of the 1980s and ’90s, said Brittany Friedman, an assistant professor of sociology at University of Southern California who is leading a study of the practice. [...] Connecticut used to collect prison debt by attaching an automatic lien to every inmate, claiming half of any financial windfall they might receive for up to 20 years after they are released from prison [...].

But in reality, he only received half of that amount. The balance goes straight to the prison to pay off the $1,000 in “rent” that the prison charged Matthew for his prior incarceration. [...] A PA Post examination of six county budgets (Crawford, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lehigh, Venango and Indiana) showed that those counties’ prisons have collected more than $15 million from inmates — almost half is for daily room and board fees that are meant to cover at least a portion of the costs with housing and food. Prisoners who don’t work are still expected to pay. If they don’t, their bills are sent to collections agencies, which can report the debts to credit bureaus. [...] Between 2014 and 2017, the Indiana County Prison — which has an average inmate population of 87 people — collected nearly $3 million from its prisoners. In the past five years, Lebanon’s jail collected just over $2 million in housing and processing fees.

Pay-to-stay, the practice of charging people to pay for their own jail or prison confinement, is being enforced unfairly by using criminal, civil and administrative law, according to a new Rutgers University-New Brunswick led study. The study [...] finds that charging pay-to-stay fees is triggered by criminal justice contact but possible due to the co-opting of civil and administrative institutions, like social service agencies and state treasuries that oversee benefits, which are outside the realm of criminal justice. “A person can be charged $20 to $80 a day for their incarceration,” said author Brittany Friedman, an assistant professor of sociology and a faculty affiliate of Rutgers' criminal justice program. “That per diem rate can lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees when a person gets out of prison. To recoup fees, states use civil means such as lawsuits and wage garnishment against currently and formerly incarcerated people, and regularly use administrative means such as seizing employment pensions, tax refunds and public benefits to satisfy the debt.” [...] Civil penalties are enacted on family members if the defendant cannot pay and in states such as Florida, Nevada and Idaho can occur even after the original defendant is deceased.
