netflix avatar ep. 1 thoughts (spoilers!)
major thoughts:
the framing: i was originally hesitant about starting right off the bat with the air nomad genocide and knowing that aang fled, but with the way the episode wraps up it actually does a lot of good consolidation and heavy-lifting for Aang's characterization that happened over multiple episodes in the original, so overall i think this was actually a good move
characters: sokka and aang stood out the most to me, followed by katara (still good, but less of the fire she had in the original), nevertheless all three of them managed to have a mini-arc with sokka and his leadership, aang and his duty and katara and her waterbending. zuko wasn't quite as explosive as i would have wanted but there were still moments when i genuinely had to remind myself that this isn't dante basco
worldbuilding: uhhh a bit heavyhanded in places, relies a lot on repetition of exposition, but because other dialogue is more character and action-focused i can forgive the series if they keep it just to this one episode
overall: a little clumsy at times but i thought it was nice, maybe a 7/10
details:
the prologue is a little clumsy, but it does set up the avatar cycle early on
dialogue: a little clumsy
Aang! i'm actually really happy with this aspect, the actor does a great job of balancing the fun-loving aspect with the melancholia upon learning his role
the juxtaposition between gyatso's final stand and aang drowning was really good
katara and sokka banter! speaking of which, katara and sokka don't line up 100% with their animated counterparts, but i think that's alright, and so far what i see is a good groundwork
zuko is leaning a bit more emo in this version i see
Aang sunshine vs Sokka suspicion 😭
oh no not the Gran-gran exposition dump whyyyyy we didn't need this
more focus on katara as a melancholy character? i'm a bit disappointed bc katara should be the most passionate and fiery (ha) from the get-go
zuko accepting a man-to-man fight with sokka is very in-character, though we were ROBBED of the fire nation ship breaking through the ice scene
"i think you're the bravest person i've met" that is tailor-made to get sokka on board and aang doesn't even realize it
"there's no way you're getting me on that--" CUT to sokka screaming was beautiful
ooh nice save katara! i just wish that the editing would have made the water part of it more evident bc the first time around i thought it was an airbending trick
ok i cried during the southern airtemple scene
the cuts between aang talking about loss and zuko frantically adding to his corkboard investigation wall were fabulous

Some of my favourite underground music artists, part 3:
I won’t even say anything, just go now on whatever music platform you are using and listen to the EP “for those who suffer from melancholia” in order (do not shuffle) and thank me later.
Cesourius - Alternative
The voice of angels and fairy tales is her voice, her music feels like an elven wood in early morning, so calm and perfect. So I honestly cannot recommend enough cause she is so underrated.
Lily Williams - Acoustic Indie
Modern fairytales written by a ballerina, I know, it can only be either good or amazing, and it is. I honestly don’t know what else to think or say besides… It’s art. So go listen.
Mikayla Geier - Pop
Did you ever thought I wish the Beatles did the soundtrack to La La Land? Well, you should have. Because maybe they didn’t, but there is someone who created just this vibe.
Sid Simons - Rock
It took a really long while, I know, sorry about that… But here it is, we got it. Part 3. I don’t know when and if part three will come out but maybe…

Scifi/odd/mystery indie film rec list
Someone asked me to create rec list of less known/indie scifi/odd/mystery films, and, well, it kind got out of hand. Oopsie. You can thank my hubs who writes a review of all films we've watched. These all have been given at least 3/5 stars from me and/or him. Enjoy!
I'm not fully sure if these films are all indie, but I'm quite convinced you at least haven't heard about most of them:
Another Earth (2011)
Archive (2020. On my Top 10 forever fave film list)
Automata (2014)
Boss level (2020)
Brainstorm (1983)
Breach (2020)
Coherence (2013, SO GOOD)
Color out of space (2019)
Coma (2019, russian, is available with english and german dubbing. Effing gorgeous film)
District 9 (2009)
Donnie Darko (2001)
Dual (2022. Fun fact: it was shot in the town in Finland where I was born)
ExistenZ (1999)
Gattaca (1997)
Girl on the Train (2016, mystery)
Hardcore Henry (2015)
High-Rise (2015, also highly recommend the J.G.Ballard book the film is based on)
Ink (2009. On my Top 10 forever fave films list)
Intrusion (2021)
Melancholia (2011)
Memento (2000)
Minor premise (2020)
Moon (2009)
Oxygen (2021, French)
Pi (1998)
Predestination (2014)
Primer (2004, can’t emphasize enough: this is a MUST for every scifi film buff. Goes without saying, on my Top 10 list)
Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021)
Splice (2009)
Sunshine (2007)
The Blackout (2019, Russian)
The Discovery (2017)
The Endless (2017)
The Invitation (2015)
The Repo-men (2010)
The Trip (2021)
Upgrade (2018)
Upside down (2012, technically fantasy but what the heck. Pretty as hell)
Vivarium (2019)
Westworld (original film from 1973)
Scifi/horror:
Blood red sky (2021, German)
Cube (1997) & Cube 2 (2002) (the rest are meh)
Event Horizon (1997, I wrote a homage to this film into my book :3)
Kyrsyä - Tuftland (2017, Finnish, it’s available online somewhere and en subtitles are available. Might require some digging though)
Additional mentions, not necessary indie films but MUST SEE:
12 Monkeys (1995)
Contagion (2011)
Dune (1984 + the new ones)
Ex Machina (2014)
In time (2011)
Logan’s run (1976)
Old (2021)
Prospect (2018)
Soylent green (1973)
Tetris (2023)
The Andromeda Strain (1971)
A Quiet Place (2018, 2020)
Split (2016, also the whole film series)
In general worth a watch (all basically under odd at least):
All Darren Aronofsky films
All M. Night Shyamalan films
TV shows (not indie, just worth the watch):
Dark Matter (SYFY, 2015-2017. First EP sucks, then it's absolute golden. A kin to Firefly)
The Expanse (Originally Netflix, moved to Amazon. Both TV show AND books. Oh the books are SO GOOD and better than the show imo)
Severance (Apple. I can't yell enough of this. It's just mindbogglingly good)
The X-Files (duh)
Star Trek: The Next Generation (yeah yea, I'm a trekkie)
Star Trek Picard
Resident Alien (SYFY, 2021-)
Foundation (Apple, 2021- *chef's kiss* goes for the books too)

1990s Downtempo Playlist
Alright, folks, I've got some good news and some bad news this week regarding an update for this 90s downtempo playlist here. The bad news is that the Spotify version has unfortunately shrunk since the last time I posted it, because for whatever reason, "Life," by Paris' DJ Cam, a super chill piece of stoned trip hop melancholia, is completely gone 😔.
But to counteract that one piece of bad news are two pieces of good news: one, I was able to retain "Life" for the YouTube version of this playlist, and two, I also added a couple gems to that playlist that can't be found on Spotify. And both of those adds happen to come from the legendary Frankfurt, Germany-based Harthouse label, which was an outfit that was co-owned by the great Sven Väth. Originally founded in the early 90s, Harthouse played a pioneering role in the the growth and spread of both trance and hard trance, but in its later mid-to-late 90s period, it also broadened out its horizons into a lot more genres, including downtempo and trip hop.
So, with this update, we've got a track from 1996 off of a Harthouse comp that highlighted a bunch of electronic musicians from North America's west coast called Pacific Rhythm - The First Wave. And this song, "Enchanted Isles," a piece of tranquilly hand-drum-laced aquatics that also has pretty piano bits in it too, is by a little-known San Franciscan named Timothy Hendricks, who for this exclusive song went by the moniker of 23rd World. "Enchanted Isles" makes for a very relaxing way to spend 5 minutes and 45 seconds, and it only has a little over 2,500 plays.
And the other add comes from a Berlin musician named Jiri.Ceiver, who in 1997, had a neatly constructed, head-nod-inducing, deep nu-blues-type of groove called "Ycool" appear on a little Harthouse compilation EP called Taste It, Vol. 2. "Ycool" is one of those types of electronic tunes that adds more pieces to itself as it continuously loops, like a snowball that rolls down a steep slope and eventually becomes a snow boulder. And it currently only has 130 plays!
23rd World - "Enchanted Isles" Jiri.Ceiver - "Ycool"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So, while the Spotify playlist is now down to 34 songs that total 3 hours and 35 minutes, the YouTube one has now grown to 60 songs that total over 6 and a half hours! Lots to chew on between the both of them, but obviously, the YouTube one has a whole lot more rare goodies on it 😋.
And if those sound way too long for you, I'm also starting to break some of these playlists down by year too, so I've got one that only has downtempo tunes from 1993 and another one that only has downtempo tunes from 1996.
1993 Downtempo: YouTube / YouTube Music 1996 Downtempo: YouTube / YouTube Music
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!
Like what you hear? Follow me on Spotify and YouTube for more cool playlists and uploads!

180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us Ep 3 Thoughts
I'm still not over the architectural bars in the middle of In's room.
Wang is attractive in a way that feels unusual for Thai dramas I'm used to.
The confidence in the ritualistic way In made that coffee was kinda hot.
The flirting over coffee and speaking between the lines brought me back to 1000 Stars for a moment. It's kinda interesting that Coffee Melody hasn't hit this level of sexual tension over coffee.
It's absolutely captivating watching a show from Thailand where the cinematography feels intentional the entire time. The conversation over breakfast is mostly just A-B cuts, but putting In and Sawimol in one frame highlights the choices they've made as adults that separates them from Wang. Going to the wide shot of the table highlights the gulf between both parties. Then, as soon as Sawimol exits, the two men are reaching across that Gulf over shared purpose. Finally, the overhead shot and pan indicates that they've reached a private accord. I'm gonna lose it.
I think I am glad that Wang apologized to his mom, even if the inherent codependency of their dynamic worries me. I think it's okay for Wang to disapprove of the dated nature of some of her work, but it was indeed incredibly rude for him to deride her the way he did.
In explaining that he doesn't cry by avoiding things that make him sad...while standing next to the cage...is just going to drive me insane. The way he walked away from Wang to the desk frames him such that he retreats behind the bars.
I'm not sure Wang even knows what he wants from In.
I liked the bridge-buiding montage. It seems like Wang did not get much of an experience he enjoyed at his boarding school, so there was probably something enjoyable masculine about the labor.
These two are unsubtle about the way they discuss risk taking. In is set in his reserve, and Wang is firmly opposed.
Oh lord here the Thai boys go again getting their whole pant legs wet around bathing.
In takes a glance, but always walks away from desire when it creeps up with Wang.
There were so many people hired for this surprise.
Oh my goodness I'm going to exit my corporeal form. If my family hired performers to do an almost interpretive dance as they sung happy birthday with a violinist before a guy with a globe-shaped cake exited a giant present box, I would probably just die right there.
This time, when describing the game, the A-B framing puts Wang on the bottom of the frame with his mom. Interesting that the last time we had this, In was presented as more equal. Wang may know what his mom is up to, but he's not really in control.
Man, the constant use of metaphor is something I've missed even in queer cinema. This show is a real treat for me.
Ah, we have a conceit to remove the mom from the story for a few days. Something LGBT is definitely going to happen.
Confirming that In and Siam we're intimate only brings up more questions, like why were they sorry it happened?
Man, this show is just so different from the usual fare. I enjoy BL immensely, but I am a sucker for this particular brand of queer melancholia tinged with hope and exploration.

5 K-drama supporting actresses who deserve more love
The title speaks for itself. "No small roles, only small actors" they say. Here are some of my favorite actresses known for playing supporting / guest roles and where you might have seen them. List created in no particular order. Gifs not mine!
Potential spoilers for the following series: Extraordinary Attorney Woo; Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha; and Hotel Del Luna.
Lee Bong-ryun
I was inspired to write this post because of her recent stint as feminist-activist Attorney Ryu in Extraordinary Attorney Woo (ep. 12), but I first noticed her in Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, where she plays the warm but no-nonsense zone chief Yeo Hwa Jeong.
Other incredible work can be seen in Sweet Home (her eerie-vibe in the trailer alone was enough to make me give it a shot) and Run On.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeom Hye-ran
With her recent Best Supporting Actress win at this year's Baeksang Awards for The Uncanny Counter, offers should be pouring in for Yeom Hye-ran. I'm not even surprised anymore when I see her in a show since she can fit in practically anywhere. From the annoying aunt in Goblin and the battered wife in Dear My Friends, to the ruler of the underworld in Mystic Pop-Up bar and the superpowered healer from The Uncanny Counter, she definitely has the range.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jin Kyung
I always mix up Jin Kyung with Lee El (whom I also love) because they carry a certain elegance and mystery that make them stand out no matter how little screen time they have. Currently featured as Tae Su-mi in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, she has been effective in making viewers speculate, sympathize, admire, and dislike her with the brief appearances she has made.
I've also enjoyed her work in Melancholia as Noh Jung-ah, Dr. Romantic as Nurse Oh Myung-shim, and Pinocchio as Song Cha-ok.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seo Yi-sook
I paid more attention to Hotel Del Luna because I was constantly on the lookout for the next Mago shin sister. She plays six of them in this drama and they are so distinct from each other that you may forget they're played by the same person. Due to her charisma, gravelly voice, and amazing diction, she often gets cast as the CEO's antagonistic wife or a competent authority figure whom you're not too sure whose side she's on. Whatever it may be, she always makes it count. One hell of a singing voice too (watch her sing on JTBC's Hot Singers).
Other notable credits: Terius Behind Me; The World of the Married; Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol.
youtube
Tumblr media
Cha Chung-hwa
Known to many fans as Court Lady Choi in Mr. Queen and one of the North Korean ahjummas in Crash Landing On You, I've come to appreciate not only Cha Chung-hwa's comedic timing but also her immense talent in subtle dramatic acting. While I initially wasn't the biggest fan of Nam-suk the town gossip in Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, I was impressed by her heartfelt portrayal of a grieving mother who uses gossip and humor as therapy. Other wonderful roles and guest appearances include: Hospital Playlist 2; Hotel Del Luna; and On the Verge of Insanity.

I’ve repeated this song for a couple weeks now. “The Elegy of Luthien” is the second half of the EP 深き森から (Fukaki Mori Kara) by a short-lived Japanese group called sh. I’d found it right at the top of Rateyourmusic’s Neoclassical Darkwave listings. (Though this seems minimalistic for that genre to me.) The whole EP is 10-minute melancholia with cicada and cricket song for ambience. When I first listened from start to finish on YouTube, I happened to be fighting a particularly nasty tension headache that made the constant cicada noises in “砕け散る陽炎” nigh unbearable. This song, on the other hand, pretty much turned it all around for me. Granted, that coincided with the tylenol having done its job, so it really was a nice relief.
In trying to follow along with the thickly accented vocals, I did a quote search on of the few lines I could make out by ear: ”More than the mortal tongue can tell”...
Lo and behold, it’s the Song of Parting.
In my defense, I’ve never read The Silmarillion. The name Luthien flew over my head at first.

there's been an uptick in people asking if they can do tuesdayposts too (yes, hi hello yes, my god, please do i want to read them, the format isn't copyrighted or anything) which made me think about how i use the tuesdayposts as an excuse to go looking for weird shit and why i'm so annoyed when something is recommended to me but the rec doesn't give me a good pitch. this grew into a digression about the function of a critic and what i use reviews for. and what like axes of things i find important or what i use various sources for. so it's a separate post now bc there's not a real...point to it, mostly getting my thoughts in order. also it is very long
while i would not wish the title of "culture critic" upon my worst enemy, let's sidestep “oooh all critics/tastemakers/influencers are bullshit”. imo you’re supposed to find one whose taste aligns with yours and THEN use their reviews to find new things. if my taste aligns with yours, cool! if you're just here to see what weird shit i made or pulled out of an estate sale this week, also cool!
i think the most successful discussion of a work is "what is it/what's the pitch, what is it TRYING to do given the context of the time and people who created it, does it accomplish its goals or tell its story in a coherent fashion" and then finally what i think most people get most hung up on is "do I PERSONALLY think this work accomplished its goals or storytelling in a manner i found reasonable/understandable/liked".
i really, really, really hate the style of review that tells me nothing about the work except there's a token gay person in it. i saw zero useful reviews of OFMD before i gave up and watched the first ep myself.
here are some people who fulfill the above useful criteria, i pay attention to, and why their recs work for me: gita jackson, a culture/games critic over at vice knows the difference between a movie being Good and a movie being Fun, and is a queer person under 30 with a film degree so our needs align on several important axes. so i waited to watch the rpatz batman until they wrote an article and they said if it was fun or not.
cyberexboyfriend on instagram and i think mainly tiktok (lots of crossposts) has opinions i agree with about mcmansion architecture, and an eye for the weird late eighties through early oughts fashion and art that fell through the cracks. like the media that fuels the Extremely Online art i generally find annoying, but the source media of edited anime or fantasy movie screencaps on tshirts is generally pretty cool. this fills an important function to me bc i like going "ah! i know where that's from" when i see a hot girl in joanns wearing a shirt from vapor95.
i follow exactly four people on letterboxd and they are the aforementioned critics plus two mutuals bc i already know their general media tastes align with mine. wendy @dying-suffering-french-stalkers is very very good at finding things that have a certain quality of emotion to them. not full horror, not full tragedy, and not full melancholia either, but a catharsis or a putting an era to bed gently and turning the lights out when you're done. honey @birdcfparadise is willing to sit through a lotta goddamn nonsense in order to report back about the good ones and we both have a finely honed taste in the dilfs of the silver screen. where the fuck else am i going to get vital intelligence like this
Tumblr media
furthermore these two are the only people i trust about Classic Movie (tm) Opinions. like, they will tell me if a movie that is very much a Product of its Era (tm) is worth sitting through the things that make it very much a Product of its Era (tm). i haunt the letterboxd activity page to see what they've added to their watchlists
i pay more attention to @morrak's book recs and shove them to the front of my list bc we have the same not-quite-engineer-but-enough-to-be-dangerous kind of brain and literally all of his recs have hit, including the ones where i'm like "ough this is very good but i need to come back to it later". i pay more attention to whatever the fuck @believerindaydreams is up to be we both like the same sort of heavily allusive, love letter to pulp kinds of stories.
my point is not "everyone needs to make more friends and if you don't have a richly layered online friend group of nearly a decade in some cases funneling art to you through the medium of tumblr then you're toast" but like. along with critics, friends' recs and things i found while trying to find friends' recs are a huge driver of the tuesdayposts. people fundamentally want to share the cool new shit they've found. that's why we're all here, blogging

Team Top 10 Tunes : Charlie Cox
03 February 2012 (X)
Radio Host: Ladies and Gentlemen! Where have you been? It’s been a belter of a summer here in the Dayglo, and we missed you! It’s been groovier than The Rainbow, ravier than the Balearics, more dehydrated than Glastonbury, more rancid than A Big Day Out, more diva than Nell’s...and where were you? Never mind you’re back, the Dayglo is heaving, the bar is open, and please welcome if you will as tonight’s DJ one of the most interesting actors around – all the way from Blighty a man who was a pleasure to do business with (on The Ordained, and stand by folks, let us see if it gets through the gate to series with CBS); smart, urbane, impeccably mannered and extremely talented. You may know him best from Stardust or Downton Abbey (ep 1) or Moby Dick or heaps of other stuff. We know him best as the IRA fella in Boardwalk Empire (seasons 2 & 3) in which he was WAY WICKED! Anyway, enough from me, the screams are too loud for me to hear myself anyway...here he is, a big Dayglo hand, if you will...for the marvelous....MR CHARLIE COX!
Charlie Cox:
I Thought I'd put together a list of slightly lesser known classics. I've had to resist listing a Dylan, Pink Floyd or Justin Beiber (last one was a joke) but hoped it would be more interesting this way.
1. Lawrence, KS - Josh Ritter
Through a strange set of circumstances I ended up becoming friends with Josh long after being a huge fan of his. I once heard him sing this one live with no microphone or amp. He just belted it out from the front of the stage. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It was extraordinary.
2. Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
There's a quality to Bill Withers voice that is so moving to me. Something very gravelly and resonant. He seems like a real "salt of the earth" musician. I heard that he was discovered whilst fitting toilet seats to Boeing 747's. No idea if it’s true but very cool if it is.
3. Bulbs - Van Morrison
I see that a few people have chosen Sweet Thing already which would arguably have been my pick. So for a little variation I thought I'd submit this lesser known track from the album Veedon Fleece. Really gets me excited this song especially when the piano kicks in after 30 seconds! I kind of hate it when "old timers" say it, but when I hear this song I tend to agree... "They just don't make songs like this anymore"!!!!
4. Within the Rose - Matthew and the Atlas
The vocal harmonies that these guys do are stunningly beautiful. They are still relatively unknown but are on iTunes and I think are gonna be a big success soon. It's not mine to tell but I met Matthew once who told me the story behind this one. Amazing to listen to knowing it ... sorry!
5. Telegraph Road - Dire Straights
This one takes you on a whole life journey. It's 14 mins long so if you ever want to kill an hour just listen to it 4 times. I think if there was any band I could see in concert it would be these guys. Mark Knopfler on the guitar would be sensational.
6. New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down - LCD Sound System
Just recently discovered this living in NY. Don't really know the band very well but absolutely love this track and its touching melancholia. There's also a great documentary about the lead singer who decided to quit it all one day whilst at the height of success. It's called "shut up and play the hits."
7.Crucify Your Mind - Rodriguez
Talking about great documentaries. About a year after everyone else, I discovered Searching for Sugar Man needless to say it was unbelievable and I think I cried for the last 30 minutes. Two days later my girlfriend discovered he was playing so she surprised me with tickets. It felt like an historic experience.
8. Something Good - Alt J
Another new favorite of mine. Don't really have anything to say about it other than express my concerns about "killing" this song for myself by overplaying it. I seem to really struggle to not put it on every time I turn my iPod on. Or their album for that matter.
9. Gabriel's Obe - Ennio Morricone
Sound track to the film The Mission and a bit of classical to my list. I think this is probably one of the most moving pieces of music I have ever heard. Morricone, has elevated countless movies into a class above what they would have been without him. He's a maestro!
10. Untitled - Interpol
I very rarely respond to modern music that have little or no lyrics. This is an exception. I have no idea why I love it so much. It has a very dark, dangerous quality to me. Even the title "untitled" is in tune with the feelings the song invokes in me.

EP Review: Phoebe Bridgers - So Much Wine
She doesn’t write ’em. But Phoebe Bridgers’ annual year-end covers establish her as a master of holiday melancholia.
“I like fucked-up holiday songs,” Bridgers said recently.
And it shows on her sparse, atmospheric takes.
Bridgers recorded the Handsome Family’s “So Much Wine” for 2022 and released it as the title track to a digital-only EP that complies the charity releases dating back to 2017’s decidedly not-merry “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
Particularly prescient is 2020’s update of Simon & Garfunkel’s “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night,” which references “the first step” toward overturning Roe v. Wade and the previous administration’s attempts to shakedown Ukraine. It’s as if someone had given Bridgers a crystal ball for the holidays that year.
So Much Wine is downbeat in the extreme, yet it gets to the core of what it means to be human at a time when joy is supposed to be compulsory even as it proves elusive.
You don’t have to be alone to be lonesome, Bridgers sing on her cover of “Christmas Song”
Tom Waits’ “Day after Tomorrow” and Merle Haggard’s “If We Make it through December” round out So Much Wine, which might send listeners reaching for just that when the EP ends.
Grade card: Phoebe Bridgers - So Much Wine - B

Review: Trash Pals glowing new single ‘Perfect Dream’ encompasses cherished memories in a warm, nostalgic indie sound
Indie-rock duo Trash Pals formed between the pair Conor Rayne and Gabe Schnider, separately known for their work with some esteemed musical greats. As they come together to bring a fresh and captivating sound to the stage, Trash Pals have already shared numerous singles and an EP in the span of just one year, refining their signature sound and bringing on board the support of the masses.
Now as they share their first song of the year titled ‘Perfect Dream’, this two-piece look to pull you in with something light and airy on the surface, with of course enough flecks of nostalgia to get your heart aching all the same. From a drawn-out, cascading intro of piano keys and stripped-back acoustic guitar strums, there’s a real sense of something quite magical and intimate in one, elevated further by the carefree additions of groovy bassline twangs and easy-going, thudding beats. Flowing atop it as the verse opens up, Trash Pals sing with a warm and soft, spoken-sung delivery of lines, their gentle words made even more enthralling as backing vocal lines subtly add a repeated emphasis behind the surface.
The chorus brings a new emphasis to the sound, glowing with the return of the opening’s piano keys and higher-ranged vocal changes. With a smooth flow and a lovely rasp to some lines, you can’t help but feel the emotional resonance in everything they sing. The other instruments remain relatively the same, if not just a little more prominent, maintaining the foundations of the respite they’ve built for you to further relax into. The longer things play out, the more the sound builds and develops, growing with such an atmosphere of reverie and ethereality you’ll want to hear just one more time.
xx Between the more paired-back sound and the undercurrent of melancholia that seeps through the bright crackles of the sound, like watching a fire that’s secure and yet dangerous all in one, ‘Perfect Dream’ sings of an equally multi-faceted topic. Singing of cherished memories, the pair divulge into what it really means to appreciate these fleeting moments, trusting them only in the safest of hands. Similarly to dreams, they can crack apart and vanish if held too tightly. Running through some of their own past with a vagueness that keeps the magic, Trash Pals share: ‘laugh at funny kid stuff, only getting older.’ Things continue with the offering to let someone in, acknowledging that ‘you can break it in your hands’ as they prepare them to instead cradle their past as they would a small animal. With so much of a focus on the past, it’s unavoidable that ‘Perfect Dream’ feels so deeply nostalgic, tugging on the most nostalgic thoughts and slithers of your own memories that relate.
If ‘Perfect Dream’ seems like the sound you’re longing for, don’t miss out on listening for yourself here!

Bestial Mouths – R.O.T.T. (inmyskin) (Negative Gain Productions)
Tumblr media
With the latest offering from industrial darkwave project Bestial Mouths we get an update on Lynette Cerezo's particular examination of the world around us and its apparent rapid descent into environmental doomsday and political/cultural disorder. Opening track “The Knife” and its fusion of soaring melodies and Cerezo's arresting vocals seeming to sing about self-protection and how those habits are no guarantee to shield you from getting hurt and from being duped by someone that earns your trust. The song also sets a musical theme that runs throughout the record of gorgeously sweeping and bright synth lines interweaving with gritty, textural sounds and what might be described as tribal rhythms if that tribe was one that emerged out of a near future wasteland.
Cerezo engages in the use of symbolic language in mythical terms in telling the stories on this album and her approach to vocalizing  dramatically expresses narratives of surviving abuse and oppression but with a tone of compassion in Cerezo's vocals. It's as though in confronting the situations and directing words to the agent of that harm there is a validation of those feelings that too often become a source of shame and a spirit of defeat. Cerezo reclaims that power and channels it into anthems of resistance. The songwriter has used her music as a vehicle for similar explorations and examinations of abuse, misogyny and bodily autonomy but this album seems more overtly written in the vein of dance music but dance as a sacred and therapeutic act of personal expression and liberation. The pulses of low end, the circular and ripping vocal style, the deeply atmospheric backdrop drones, the percussion accents and synth melodies come together in an alchemy of layered catharsis. The songs have a spiritual resonance with the sound of Xmal Deutschland but also with ADULT.. Yet all the while there is something immediately accessible about these songs as though Cerezo embraced and incorporated elements of synth pop like an underlying emotional touchstone for listeners to anchor its headier themes and harrowing sounds to the kind of music that can feel comfortable to many people. Earlier Bestial Mouths releases were more like electronic post-punk in sound and recent albums and EPs gave few obvious concessions to standard accessibility. This album, in spite of its unorthodox title, feels absolutely subversive in its fusion of dark industrial dance music and the avant-garde with borderline hip-hop beats and arresting and gorgeously chilling melodic hooks. As the album ends with the anthemic “Road Of Thousand Tears” the patient listener is rewarded with a gloriously uplifting song about loss and reconciliation that fans of Grace Jones and Light Asylum will find in a similar league of emotionally rich cleansing of lingering melancholia. SEE: Vegyn - “Makeshift Tourniquet”
Tumblr media
British songwriter/DJ/producer Joseph Thornalley aka Vegyn drops new single “Makeshift Tourniquet”, via his own label PLZ Make It Ruins. On this emotionally rich, layered dance floor groove, sustained waves of synth wash over house beats and glowing bleeps, all coalescing in gently vivid technicolor. With a title that’s suggestive of the temporary fix found in dancefloor elation, it’s rife with the “happy melancholia" that runs through much of his work. LISTEN HERE:https://plz.ffm.to/makeshifttourniquet “It’s been some time since I delved into more conventional dance music and ‘Makeshift Tourniquet’ seems to be a fairly natural arrival at said genre. The track came to fruition after some light tinkering with a unique combination of new studio hardware. I’m not sure what it is about syncopation but it’s always been the key to get people moving with my songs. Lots of people have been enjoying this one at my club shows this year, so I’m excited to see the indoor fans get to listen to it too.” Vegyn “Makeshift Tourniquet” follows his debut album Only Diamonds Cut Diamonds and the 71 track mixtape Text While Driving If You Want to Meet God! (both 2019), the ODCD Alt Versions EP in 2020, and another epic mixtape – the 75 track Don't Follow Me Because I'm Lost Too!! – last year. Vegyn’s production credits, collaborations and remixes include Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, Kali Uchis, JPEGMafia, Dean Blunt, Babyfather, Duval Timothy, John Glacier, Babyxsosa, Double Virgo and Ethan P. Flynn. He debuted his brand new live show at Fuji Rock in Japan this summer, sold out his London show two months in advance and will play select US dates in December - list of dates below.
