My personal theory is that ART decided to befriend/help/keep Murderbot from the moment MB shared that footage/data/sensations of being tormented by the governor module.
It is a huge ship, basically a Culture-style Mind in comparison to every other tech we see. It loves its crew and its function.
ART and MB specifically establish that ART CAN interpret reactions and emotional data shared with it by MB in a way unlike getting data from humans.
So to confront a concept like this--torture at all, but also torture in the course of fulfilling the function for which you were built...
Yeah, sure, keep that comm. MAYBE we'll cross paths again later.

I know they give us the plot to Sanctuary Moon in the books, and that it's a contemporary space adventure, but the first time Murderbot mentioned it, all I could imagine was a period k-drama.

[id: screenshot of fiveayegeethree's tweet.
the tweet says: "anyways read the murderbot diaries by martha wells" and that is above a screenshot that reads:
this isn't like a "oh i didn't picture murderbot this way therefore its a bad casting thing"
it's a "you are adapting a series with a cast of mostly non-white non-men characters and all of your writers/directors/producers are white men, and you've casted a white cis man to play a nonbinary (most likely non-white) character whose gender identity/lack thereof is a CENTRAL part of the story and it's character" thing]

"The littoral zone is the bit where the sea, or the lake, meets the land…it’s a sort of liminal space"
For the last day of prompts, a promo poster for Littoral Zone! By @rosewind2007 . Art was inspired by the littoral zone where their machine parts meet. Such a wonderful story, like a big hug!

It’s really interesting watching Murderbot shake some prejudices over time. Some are a bit more obvious, like humans and general and Miki re: “pet robots” (though it does keep using that phrase).
One that I noticed in Artificial Condition, though, was how it referred to ComfortUnits.
In All Systems Red, it uses the phrase “sexbot” like, what, once? Twice? I think it’s feasible that Wells hadn’t decided or committed to the concept of the ComfortUnits yet at that point. The term is bordering on derogatory, but that seems more due to SecUnit’s asexuality and sex aversion.
Then in Artificial Condition, we meet one - Murderbot meets one. And it uses ‘sexbot’ almost exclusively outside of the basic lowdown on ComfortUnits, at first. ART corrects it and it doesn’t care.
But then it goes down to find some truth, and that truth involves ComfortUnits doing a thing they were very much not designed for, to protect humans. While there are a lot of kill all human jokes in the series, it’s abundantly clear that SecUnit is focused on protecting its clients. It hates failure, sure, but it goes after non-contracted clients in books 2 and 3 to protect them, and not just out of pragmatism regarding its core challenge in the book. SecUnit hates it when its humans are hurt, threatened, and killed.
So when the ComfortUnits move to protect the humans, to stop the massacre, it’s not 100% clear what their motives are. But they’re smart, as smart as if not smarter than SecUnit. They knew they were probably going to die and they did it anyways.
It might not have been for SecUnit, but it benefitted SecUnit, and it makes SecUnit really think about them. In chapter 9, it stops using ‘sexbot’ entirely and refers to them exclusively as ComfortUnits. It’s never pointed out, but you can really see it re-evaluating its prejudices over the course of the story. It’s fascinating.

Murderbot thinks it’s the one with the single brain cell of any group it’s in . . . and this is correct insofar as security is concerned but even then the brain cell does have a tendency to blip out when Murderbot should be considering options other than throwing itself to get shredded in the blender of self-sacrifice

Highly, highly recommend Citizen Sleeper to everyone, but especially to my fellow Murderbot Diaries fans. It's a beautiful, incredibly well written game that hits a lot of the same points as TMD. I loved it

Just finished Rogue Protocol (continuing my Muderbot Diaries read-through) and it is so good! Each entry in this series is amazing, and I love seeing the character development and evolution of Muderbot, as well as learning more about the worldbuilding. It was fun, fast-paced and action-packed, very emotional, sad, and I truly cannot wait to read the next story :)

Mkay I'm not even at the hostile yet but Murderbot Book 3 AU where it's. It's just a fucking Xenomorph in the vents, Alien Isolation style.
I want a crossover so bad.
