i love franklydear as much as the next guy, but i have to admit i’m always a little thrown off by how much fanwork portrays them as married from the get-go, because part of the appeal of franklydear for me is the prospect of someone having their gay awakening while also experiencing the muppets’ adaptation of silent hill.

hey! just saw your post about bugsnax and I got really curious about the game and your opinions on it

do you play horror games often? would you recommend this one? what you liked and disliked about it?

So okay, I'm not very far into Bugsnax at all. I'm maybe two hours in, and I'm watching a youtuber I like (Wanderbots) play the game. If I can, I'm going to pay the Let's Play tax on this thing and buy it, because it's a really cool experience even in these first couple hours.

but so far this is a really unique experience, because it isn't... a conventional horror game. like, I jokingly called it "the last days of Rapture but on the backstage of the Muppet Show", but that's what this game has been thus far. we're seeing a society that came to a new world, messed around with things they didn't understand, and fell victim to their own infighting and Interpersonal Conflicts.

...except that they all look like rejected Sesame Street character concepts.

A lot of the scariest parts of this game are Adult Fears- relationships gone sour, depression, delusion, et cetera. It's like a slightly more fucked up version of whatever the fuck Chibi Robo was on. And the horror, from what I've heard, stays mostly suitable for children all the way through; the worst parts of it will go over a kid's head unless they're prone to Thinking About Stuff Too Much.

it's absolutely fascinating. it's making me want to write that video essay about children's horror in video games, because like, a lot of people who review video games do not have my trainspotterish interest in kids' media? IDK. IDK.

also I play horror games often (my favourite horror game of all time is probably The Maker of Masks, which is tonally and thematically the exact opposite of Bugsnax. It's nightmare fuel, heavily inspired by Silent Hill, do not give it to a child.) and Bugsnax isn't quite like anything I've seen before or since. It's entirely unique.

In early 2020, @mystery-moose decided my cinematic education could no longer be allowed to persist with such egregious holes. He and I and @eponymous-rose and @silksieve and @fistfulofgammarays started a discord server to watch movies every Saturday night, and shortly after came @probablylostrightnow and @servantofclio and @jadesabre301 and @annalyia and @bettydice, and suddenly we had something like bottled lightning held in a jar in our hands.

It couldn't have come at a better time--the pandemic struck about a month later--and what started as a way to expand my our horizons has become a precious thing. We've watched movies together, celebrated birthdays together, and we've traveled together too, to Colorado and Chicago and the Grand Canyon and a half-dozen other little gatherings across the entire country.

It's not an easy thing for a bunch of 30-40+'s to get together every week. But we make the time, rain or shine, only missing one single week where all but one of us were traveling, and the joy it's brought me (along with the knowledge of the greatest movie of all time, Kung Fu Hustle) is comparable to nothing else. Today is our slightly delayed three-year anniversary celebration.

oh boy oh boy oh boy!!! now you'll notice neither until dawn nor the quarry are on this list - i ASSUME you guys know i'm in way too deep with supermassive already ;P these are specifically NOT supermassive horror games sdklfjskldjf

silent hill 2. literally no game will ever eclipse sh2 in my mind. ever. it's one of those things that i wish i could go back in time and experience for the first time all over again. the first time i got to the end of this game i was just like. beside myself. and every subsequent playthru i just love it more and more. the ambiance of this one??? perfection. the characters??? the best. it's more SAD than it is SCARY, at least imo, but it's just scary ENOUGH to drive the overall message home and just. ughhhhhhhh i love silent hill 2.

silent hill 4. sh4 is like the polar opposite of sh2 for me: the ambiance is terrible (for me), the characters are abrasive (for me), everything is so deeply unsettling and so deeply WRONG with the world you're playing in that you're just constantly on edge. you're given a safe room for most of the game where you can heal and relax and just. breathe. then, without warning, that safe room is gone. the whole game is like that, and god help me i love it. none of the sh games make me HALF as nervous as sh4, and no matter how many times i play it, i never get LESS anxious alskdfjlksdjf

HOOOOOO OUTLAST IS GOOD!!! i mean it's bad. it's awful. we've got, like, unbelievably unethical shit going on at every turn, but it's just so good. look, you guys know i'm a sucker for body horror, and this game's got that. you probably ALSO know i'm a sucker for supernatural entities with hiveminds - surprise, we got that too. there's a LOT of questionable shit in these games if you're not familiar with them so be warned, but god i just...love the lore. i love the lore so much. i read the outlast comics and everything XD (also i'm a basic bitch and eddie gluskin's whole deal had me hook line and sinker, sooooooooo)

perception. i haven't seen a lot of people who've played this one, but it's one of my faves!!! in perception, you play as a young woman who's more or less entirely blind. you have to navigate an old house using nothing but sound, only here's the problem: you miiiiiight not be alone. this is such, such, SUCH a good game, and so different from the other horror stuff out there.

bugsnax. they're bugs. they're snacks. you put them in your pack. what's not to love?????? bugsnax is a body horror game for kids, and it's one of my most favorite things in the world. you can throw ketchup at people. there's a character named scoopy banoopy. there are gay muppets in love. i used a talking strawberry to murder a living s'more. i don't know how else to sell this game to you, please just know it's both adorable and scary, and you're going to immediately want to make a self insert oc for this world because it's just so FUN (mine's name is chumby crumblesnoot, and she eats E V E R Y T H I N G)

Julie Joyful

1 - This character is subject to change in the future potentially or simply being rewritten as Julie's older sister 'Jewel' who's nickname is Julie if I dislike the direction of the character. As she canonically, so far grew up from a cave into her adulthood with her siblings, so it's easy enough to do, or explain honestly. On that note, with other Julie's? She is known as Jewel with them but also referred to as Julie or Double J, JJ or Big J, Big Sis since she's their older sister.

2 - While this character will be relatively vague at first, there will be dark elements, sinister undertones at times as this is a horror comic.

3 - What to expect: basically 1970s kids songs based of an artwork of her with a microphone, upbeat songs, granted she could be absolutely terrible at it in canon but I like it enough. Then goofiness, jokes, playfulness and maybe the occasional murder/vague extreme violence. But more often than not will just be unsettling. I will admit I might accidentally at times make this a touch too similar to my other character 'Chalice' but will try my best to avoid that presentation. I do not expect you to sing along with Julie if you don't want to.

4 - This character is canonically bi and genderfluid, I am not a stickler for that. So long as she/he's some form of canon into men/women with whatever lean and a form of two genders? I do not care what you do.

5 - I do have this character more or less thought out for what I want in terms of powers, inner characterization, so while I doubt this will ever line-up with other Julie's? Know that she's relatively powerful for some vague rainbow monster thing. I don't plan on using her to fight really unless asked. I may come back and update this. Do take note that I won't have her use this power unless discussed and more or less just fine with her acting like a 'silent-hill/supernatural horror'-esque fighter in terms of movement etc.

6. I don't plan on smutting with this character because she's a literal Muppet almost? But I'm open to the idea as well. Ships in general are fine, however.

Do I want them to die: Sure. It won't be permanent though and might just be part of the game. Will I have/get icons: I have them. Ask me if you want them since she's a bit scarce right now but it ranges to around 120. Still collecting and updating. Tag: bleeding rainbows Age: ??? Adult Sex: AMAB Gender: Genderfluid - he or she is fine. Race: ??? Rainbow Monster Sexuality: Bisexual Personality traits: Goofy, extremely loving, loyal, a bit odd, can be unsettling. Is down for extreme violence toward 'bad people', but tends to avoid it. She'll counter-bully people in a fun way though if they're merely just jerks. Dislikes bully types. Deceptive intelligence. A bit sassy. Likes to sing and dance. Likes to rhyme sometimes or talk like that. Likes jokes. Likes pun. Likes games anything from board games, outdoor games, video games, toys etc. Likes to bake, clean, and cook. Likes surprises. May do odd things to get a reaction out of people, talk weirdly or otherwise. Dislikes cursing herself, but doesn't mind it from other people, doesn't mean she won't always. Mental traits: ??? Not human by any means but seemingly friendly. Physical traits: Is that of nearly a humanoid 'muppet', but is seemingly made of flesh outwardly. She is around 5'0 to 5'2, featureless chest wise but a little built but certainly not shaped like a human. Powers: "Let's hope you never find out!" Motivations: To have fun by any means, maybe a little love. Backstory: She grew up in a cave and eventually moved out and is visited by her siblings in 'The Neighborhood'. There she plays games, hi-jinx and goes on adventures and totally nothing else there.
