And in Japan, some of the latest technology is being presented at the International Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Expo. High on the list of offerings this year is hydrogen-power, a possible green fuel source for the next generation of appliances.

The International Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Expo is a high-tech bazaar.

This year hydrogen-power is featured prominently at the expo.

Exhibitors are offering what may soon become a viable alternative for keeping personal devices charged for longer.

One Japanese company, Aquafairy, hopes to solve charge-related problems with a product that uses hydrogen.

[Mikio Aizawa, Aquafairy President]: “Although we normally call it a fuel cell battery, it’s not actually a battery in any sense of the word. It uses the hydrogen in the air, and a hydrogen producing liquid to make a reaction with the hydrogen that generates water. When the water is produced, it also produces electricity and that can be used to charge the lithium batteries in smart phones.”

The unit will go on sale in mid-April and will cost just over $300.

Hoping to brighten the future of delivery workers, another company is adapting solar cells to outfit an electric-assist bicycle.

The solar cells, created by the company Clean Venture 21, are thin and able to withstand much more vibration than ordinary silicon cells.

The bicycle, which can carry up to 132 pounds, will remain charged as deliveries are made.

[Yoshiaki Asai, General Manager, Clean Venture 21]: “No matter what you do, you use electricity and so it decreases it the available charge. The amount lost however can be recharged by using the solar panels that are mounted on top of the bicycle. So it will recharge when you’re pedaling. It also recharges if you stop the bicycle and go in to make a delivery. In other words, it recharges whatever you may use.”
