New data has revealed the staggering pressure LGBTQ+ Americans are under following the wave of homophobic and transphobic legislation that has swept US states.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), an LGBTQ+ nonprofit organization, revealed in data analysis published on Wednesday (16 August) that almost 80% of LGBTQ+ adults feel less safe amid the rise in right-wing laws across the US.
For trans and non-binary adults, this number is significantly higher, with more than nine in 10 (94%) feeling unsafe in the US.
Results were pulled from a Community Marketing Insight (CMI) survey as part of its 17th annual LGBTQ+ Community Survey, which HRC co-sponsored.
Questions were based upon the 550 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in more than 40 states across the US since the beginning of 2023, more than 80 of which have been signed into law.
21 states in the country have enacted laws banning gender-affirming care for trans youth under the false pretence that under-18s are being put through surgeries, despite no medical organisation anywhere allowing children to undergo them.
43% of LGBTQ+ adults report that gender-affirming care bans have impacted the physical and/or mental well-being of themselves, their friends and family.
Meanwhile, over 80% of trans and non-binary adults report the same.
“Just two months after HRC declared a national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people, this survey reveals that the current climate of hostility and fear is only growing worse,” HRC president Kelley Robinson said in a statement.
“Gender-affirming care bans are taking a detrimental toll on the physical and mental health of LGBTQ+ Americans,” she continued.
“Extremist, anti-LGBTQ+ politicians and their allies are waging a dangerous and cruel misinformation campaign that seeks to stigmatise not only gender-affirming care but transgender and non-binary people as well.”
“The rhetoric and misinformation is having a virtually universal impact on LGBTQ+ people, and further plunging us into a state of emergency that’s threatening the health and safety of every LGBTQ+ person.”
FEAR OF SAFETY SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE IN FLORIDA, DATA REVEALS
The report also revealed that LGBTQ+ people in Florida are more likely to feel anxious about their own safety following Governor Ron DeSantis’ anti-LGBTQ+ attacks.
Nearly 80% of trans and non-binary adults living in Florida have said that gender-affirming care bans impact their physical or mental health, while almost 90% have either taken steps or want to take steps to move to a new state or country.
Over 93% have said gender-affirming care bans make them feel less safe in the state.
Equality Florida executive director, Nadine Smith, said in a statement: “The results of this survey make clear that we Floridians will be repairing that damage of anti-LGBTQ+ laws passed in this state for years to come.”
“Conferences are cancelling, talent is fleeing, and the best and brightest are abandoning our universities, while LGBTQ+ people are feeling more unsafe than ever before.”
“These attacks have to stop.”
In April, the Human Rights Campaign issued a warning against LGBTQ+ travelers visiting Florida, telling potential tourists to “reconsider” any plans they may have had.

Just saw Nadine Dorries claim that "Iain Duncan Smith doesn't tell lies". He literally made up fake stories about benefit claimants who were apparently grateful for being sanctioned when he was in charge of the DWP.

REVIEW
Wicked Christmas Nights
Don’t miss the chance to read historical holiday romances by eight different authors. I wanted to read the one by Tracy Sumner, as she is a favorite, and in so doing read new-to-me authors I would gladly read again.
AN IMPERFECT INTRODUCTION by Alyssa Drake
With rumors of ghosts, a dowry and possible future lost, Wilhelmina should not be kissing a young man under the Christmas tree without even knowing his name but that is just the beginning of this unusual romance.
EARL OF EDGEMERE by Amanda Mariel
Carstine’s visit to England for a coming out sponsored by her mother’s friend sees her missing Scotland but also making a friend and meeting more than one potential suitor…which one will she end up with?
THE DUKE’S SCANDALOUS CHRISTMAS WISH by Ari Thatcher
Filled with holiday traditions and family fun, will Milly come out of mourning her fiancé to find love with a Duke and if so, just how will stirring Christmas pudding play into the matter?
SMITTEN WITH MY CHRISTMAS MINX by Dawn Brower
Mistaking the duke’s daughter for a maid and the repercussions of his behavior could lead to happiness together or a quick parting for Adeline and Zachariah.
DEVIL AT THE GATES by Lauren Smith
This came in as my second most favorite with its Gothic dark foreboding feel, wonderful characters in Redmond and Harriet, Devil the dog, the ghosts most helpful, and the ogre of a stepfather Harriet ran from. Would definitely read this author’s work again.
SCANDAL IN THE SNOW by Nadine Millard
Neighbors that grew up more enemies than friends begin to see one another in a new light this holiday season. Will Olivia and Alex find their happily ever after after all?
MISS PAGEANT’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL by Tabetha Waite
It took me a bit of time to warm up to spoiled diamond of the first water Emary as she tried to snare the Duke of Winwood but as the story progressed, I began to warm to her. And Donovan, for a man at first unimpressed, fell smitten rather quickly.
TEMPTING THE SCOUNDREL by Tracy Sumner
Loved this the second time around just as much as the firs time I read it. A watchmaker and a maid who find true love together after a young man saw and fell in love one night never knowing he would see his dream woman again years later.
Did I enjoy this anthology? Yes
Would I read more by these authors? Yes
Thank you to BookSirens for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars

This Evening, in UK Politics - What Even is Happening?!
Suella Braverman, somehow an even more vile person than Priti Patel, has resigned because she sent an email from her personal account and also governments should be held accountable for their mistakes. Agreeing with Suella Braverman makes me feel dirty all over. Still, a stopped clock is right twice a day.
The fracking vote is being framed as a confidence vote.
There is a three-line whip. Any Tory MP not voting in line with the party will be removed from the parliamentary party and have to sit as an Independent MP.
The Chief Whip has resigned maybe.
It is no longer a confidence vote.
The deputy Chief Whips have also resigned?!
Jacob Rees Mogg and Thérèse Coffey are manhandling MPs into the lobby to vote?! There's an account of at least one MP crying as they did so.
Liz Truss was too busy arguing with Wendy Morton, the possibly-former Chief Whip to vote. On a vote with a three-line whip.
No Votes were recorded for 40 Tories, including not just the actual Prime Minister but also Boris Johnson (who has more important things to do than represent his constituents in parliament apparently), Nadine Dorries (no doubt wherever Boris is, hoping he notices her or something), David Davis, Greg Clark, Sir Iain Duncan Smith, Kwasi Kwarteng, Theresa May, Wendy Morton, Alok Sharma, Priti Patel, and Ben Wallace (who's actually in Washington D.C. on government business, so he gets a let). These are all party grandees, former Prime Minsters, former leaders of the party, and Nadine Dorries.
I mean, I'm assuming they're not going to withdraw the whip from the Prime Minister and members of her own cabinet (Alok Sharma in this case since Mr Wallace is abroad), although I'm willing to bet there are several Tories darkly hoping that someone will. That's one way to get rid of her!
Wendy Morton apparently has resigned.
Wouldn't it be amazing if she said, "No, I didn't resign and I've withdrawn the whip from Liz Truss!"
According to various sources and polls, if there was an election tomorrow, come Friday the SNP would be the official opposition, because the Tories would have fewer seats than the Scottish National Party and Labour would, obviously, be in power.
If Liz Truss had become Prime Minister and then done nothing whatsoever she would be doing better than she is now.
Let's have a look at some quotes!
“It’s a shambles and a disgrace. I think it is utterly appalling. I am livid,” veteran Tory MP Charles Walker told the BBC. “I hope all those people that put Liz Truss in Number 10, I hope it was worth it. I hope it was worth it for the ministerial red box, I hope it was worth it to sit around the Cabinet table, because the damage they have done to our party is extraordinary.”
Asked if the government can survive the night, one Tory MP replied: “I hope not.”
Labour MP, the shadow Scottish secretary Ian Murray, tweeted that he had "never seen scenes like it" in the voting lobby. He said he'd seen Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg shouting at his colleagues, whips "screaming at Tories", and "dragging people in".
Alexander Stafford tweeted - "Lots of rumours flying around tonight. This vote was never about fracking but about Labour trying to destabilise the country, and take control of Parliament." This is my favourite, because he's trying to blame the Opposition for this!

Hello! May I ask what your favorite dark-skinned female faceclaims are? I know that is very vague, but I have a brand new OC I am in the process of making, and I have heard the criticism of the rpc's favoritism towards picking light-skinned faceclaims. I am doing research of my own, but I'd love to see some of your (and maybe your followers?) favorite underused faces, if you don't mind! :)

Greta x Tisha (kid meme *smug look*)
If They Had a Kid Meme (x)
Name: Nadine “Nandini” Martin
Gender: Female
General appearance:
Personality: Nadine is deceptively quiet and reserved, but that’s just because she’s paying really close attention to what you say and do. She’s analytical, clever, and chooses her words carefully. Basically the opposite of her mothers, who were never quite sure what to make of the girl, but adore her completely. She’s got a soft spot for animals of all kinds, and has a big heart - she just doesn’t go showing it off.
Special talents: She’s a witch, and an inventive one too, she regularly experiments with spells utilizing complex linguistics.
Who they like better: Greta.
Who they take after more: Both parents, but you have to look close.
Personal headcanon: Got her degree at McGill, is fluent in Latin, Quebec French, and Louisiana Creole. Is working on Aramaic, for... reasons.
Face Claim: Zoë Love Smith

Today, in UK Politics
I'm going to have to start putting a date on these things.
I'm referring to 20/10/22.
The Prime Minister resigned. She lasted nearly nine Jane Greys (8.889 if you want to be exact), or 4.4 Scaramuccis.
So anyway, Liz is out and this means there's someone new to come in. Yay! Hopefully this is the last new PM before Christmas.
In the July leadership contest, when the Tories finally realised that maybe, just maybe, Boris was a terrible Prime Minister, a candidate has to be nominated by 20 Tory MPs to be included in the first round of voting's ballot. They then held the vote, and anyone with less than 30 votes was withdrawn from the competition. Voting continued with the MP with the lowest number of votes being withdrawn (and others withdrawing even if they did scrape in) until two people were left, and then all Conservative Party members, that's MPs as well as paid up members, then voted. It's obviously a lengthy process (this started in July and ended with Liz Truss the winner in September).
This time they've decided it'll all get done by the end of next week. Nominations close on Monday, and anyone with 100 nominations goes through. Given that there's currently 357 sitting MPs, that obviously means a maximum of three people going through. "If three candidates reach the threshold there will be an vote of Conservative MPs. The top two will then be subject to an indicative vote of Conservative MPs before going froward [sic] to an online vote of Party members. This will be completed by 28 October 2022. If only one candidate secures the required nominations there will be no confirmatory vote of Party members and the candidate will be confirmed leader on Monday 24 October 2022."
In case the last two bullet points were too lengthy, here's the TL;DR - I've had colds last longer than this leadership contest.
But why take your time over an important decision like who should run the actual country. It feels like something you should rush, right?
Jeremy Hunt says he doesn't want to be in charge. Probably very wise of him, honestly. (Seriously, though, remember when he was the worst Tory MP you could think of?! What sweet summer children we were!).
Neither does Michael Gove (remember when he was also in the running for worst Tory MP you could think of? Ah, the naivety of trusting vaguely to the political process).
Jacob Rees-Mogg, allegedly the Business Secretary, but we all know he's really the Minister for the 18th Century / a Victorian scarecrow haunted by a dead Victorian industrialist, is said to be encouraging people to nominate Boris Johnson, who apparently does appear to be in the running.
Boris Johnson.
The good news is, the suggestion of nominating Boris has immediately split the party. Because that's what they need. More divisions.
BBC political correspondent Ione Wells said that some senior Conservatives have said they would consider standing down and thus triggering by-elections if Boris gets the job back. On the other hand, Cabinet Office Minister Brendan Clarke Smith insists that the former prime minister was a proven winner who could restore his party's fortunes. This must be true, because everybody's favourite Boris fan, Nadine Dorries, says he's a winner! Her credibility - for want of a better term - is currently a little shot right now.
Penny Mordaunt, currently the Leader of the House, appears to be in the running, and so does Rishi Sunak, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer until he resigned in July and kicked off the whole getting rid of Boris things.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said his party was on an election footing, with a manifesto at the ready. I imagine they've been getting it into electioneering-ready status amidst the surprise that the Tories, handed a metaphorical rope by Labour's tabling amendments on the fracking legislation that had to be voted on, put said metaphor around their own necks and started shoving each other off the equally metaphorical battlements.
Also demanding an election is Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, and Wales's First Minister Mark Drakeford.
Not that they can force one, unless Labour can convince enough Tories to vote with them in a vote of no confidence, which they're unlikely to try for anyway. It's so much more useful for them if the Tories keep shoving people who cannot do the job into the PM job and burn their own party down from the inside.
Which will make a nice change for Labour, who over the last few years have been cheerfully engaging in the left wing's favourite hobby - schisming. Gosh, but the left love a good schism.
The next general election is not required to take place until at least 2024 (and by January 2025 at the latest) and, at this stage, it looks unlikely that date will be brought forward.
Because we're British, this is also happening, and it is magnificent.
