Can the musicians ruin their unintentionally perfect finales? Actually, they can, but they dpthis all by returning to a studio. Roxy Music could've made another album since Avalon and I fear their current tour still leaves the possibility open. I wish they would've only kept the concert part of their reunion, since you cannot make a better conclusion to a career than Avalon. I spoke of the LP many times, though I shall repeat – the disc serves as the series finale of Roxy Music, all of the themes they dealt with on their previous albums reach their apotheosis in here. Ferry is finally happy, there is no need to destroy that. Moreover, the group had the correct response to the platter they did after one of their previous reunions, I hope they still hold the same view.
Album Review: Various Artists - One Night In Texas: The Next Waltz’s Tribute to The Red Headed Stranger
Things like this rarely work out. But when a bunch of musical friends and fans got together May 1, 2022, to tip their red bandanas to Willie Nelson, things went splendidly.
Thankfully, tape was rolling. And One Night In Texas: The Next Waltz’s Tribute to The Red Headed Stranger may be the one various-artists’ album that belongs in every record collection.
With Bruce Robison’s house band channeling Nelson’s Family Band and artists including Vincent Neil Emerson (“Bloody Mary Morning”), Robert Earl Keen (“Pick up the Tempo”), Shinyribs (“I Gotta Get Drunk”) and Steve Earle (“Pancho and Lefty”) doing their interpretations, One Night in Texas is a gem.
To make it extra-authentic, Emily Gimble plays the role of Bobbie Nelson on the “Little Sister” showcase “Down Yonder.”
While there are no dogs in this kennel, some performances dominate. Trusted with “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” and “Crazy,” Nathaniel Rateliff earns the respect. Margo Price owns her sinewy rendition of “Shotgun Willie;” Ray Wylie Hubbard delivers an intoxicating “Whiskey River;” and Sheryl Crow lives “Night Life” to its fullest.

As a fellow lover of libraries (and as a librarian) feel I must share the heart breaking story of the loss of my rural university's library system.
I live in Vermont, a beautiful state full of many wonderful libraries (Story walks were actually invented in our state capital, at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montepelier!)
Unfortunately, Our State University system (VSU) wants to permanently close down our University Libraries state-wide. There will be no more physical libraries for students to utilize, no librarians to help us or to connect with. Students and members of our communities will be losing a precious resource and public space. Our library system will be digitalized, online only. This will have devastating effects not only for the students and our campuses but our rural communities too.
If you'd like to learn more, here's an informative post from a fellow student!
I don't know if there's much we can do at this point, but if you can, please help us raise awareness. We love our libraries and don't want to lose them. Thank you, Neil Gaiman.
That's sad, and wrong. Happy to help publicise it.
happy wipwednesday! as always i am humbly asking for my beloved arsonist from my beloved writer <3
hope you're well and not fighting with all your neils this week!
WIP Wednesday (3/13) | Arsonist Neil / Firefighter Andrew AU (Part 108)
Two days after the fake fire at Renee’s church, Andrew is off work again. He spends the morning with a bowl of Lucky Charms and the TV. Then he has to force himself to put actual clothes on and do actual human stuff. Like buying food because his kitchen is empty, except for a carton of eggs which he only uses to bake.
"Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard..." Andrew mutters under his breath as he makes a mental shopping list. He needs pretty much everything, which sucks because it's going to be hell to bring up. That's what he gets for avoiding this for so long.
As he slips his shoes on, he considers swinging by the library to find something else to do besides stare at the TV. He finds it strange for a moment that he can’t remember the last book he actually finished. He always gets bored halfway through and gives up.
“If I get a book, I will finish the book. No matter how much it sucks.” He says aloud, as if that makes it mean something. And then he takes stuffs his wallet into his pocket and opens the door.
—
After spending time around other people, both at the library and the grocery store, it’s sort of strange to come back to his empty apartment. He’s lived alone since he graduated. This is nothing new. But it almost feels… lonely. At least at the station, there’s the occasional… Annoyance. Usually in the form of a six-foot-two professional exy player who likes to follow him around.
Okay, Kevin isn’t all that bad. Andrew rather likes him, though he will admit that to no one. Especially not Kevin. With that thought, Andrew drops his groceries on the kitchen counter and starts to organize them. For some reason, the asshole who checked him out put a six pack on top of his loaf of bread so it’s squished flat on one side.
Oh, goddamn it. The one time he buys the nice bread… Andrew lets out a sigh. He’ll salvage it somehow. Maybe French toast. As he finishes putting his food away Andrew spends a bit of time doing other stupid but necessary shit, like vacuuming and cleaning the bathroom because it had been a while.
Once he’s through, he rewards himself by grabbing one of the packages of chocolate from 10’s gift basket— surprisingly there’s still plenty left— and one of the books he’d checked out before heading to his room to read in bed.

Today’s mystery in “Searching for the reference” relies on the various identities of the Fairy Witch - this former leader of the Thirteenth Floor Coven, and predecessor of Frau Totenkinder. She is first introduced to us as the “Fairy Witch” from Andersen’s “Thumbelina”, but she seems to have had other names and identities, similarly to Frau Totenkinder.
And the four names we are given are: Ardelia, Bulah, Birdie and Cherish. The following pages precise that she was specifically called “Mother Birdie” and “Mother Cherish”, so while it is not said it is possible “Ardelia” and “Bulah” might have had a “mother” before them too.
These names do not immediately bring any specific characters to my mind, except maybe “Mother Goose” - because she is called after all “Mother Birdie” (and a Mother Goose character called “Birdie” appeared in “Indexing”, this is why the connection appeared in my mind, Birdie=Goose). The insistance on her other identities being “Mother X” or “Mother Y” also brings to mind all those folkloric, nursery rhymes or folktales figures of female storyteller, of which Mother Goose is the most famous - but others must be included such as Mother Hubbard or Mother Bunch. This would fit very well with the Fairy Witch’s characterization as the good counterpart to Frau Totenkinder (the wicked witches of all the Grimm stories), and the benevolent witch that helped “build” Fabletown itself.
I tried searching these names individually, adding to it “witch” or “fairy”, not to much avail, so they must have been selected at random... One could argue “Ardelia” sounds like “Aradia” which would tie her to “Aradia or the Gospel of Witches” and the folkloric figure of Aradia, but it is a bit of a stretch...
... BUT something very interesting came out during my search. Bulah is a variation of “Beulah”, and the name “Beulah” has several witch associations in America. There is the song “Beulah Witch”, done by various singers from Buddy Rich to Neil Peart. There is an “Aunt Beulah” among the witch family of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. And I found a character of “Beulah Witch” was was a hand puppet created by Chicago puppeteer Burr Tillstrom in 1947 for the television puppet show “Junior Jamboree” (later becoming “Kukla, Fran and Ollie” - a show that aired on WBKB and later NBC.
These are all very different sources and it feels like one of those “If I had a penny every time a witch was given or linked to the name Beulah I’d have three - but it’s surprising it happened three times” jokes.
But does anyone has any idea of other literary, folkloric, nursery rhyme or fairytale references the names “Mother Cherish”, “Mother Birdie”, “Ardelia” or “Bulah” might have?

Song Review: Vincent Neil Emerson - “Bloody Mary Morning” (Live, May 1, 2022)
With its Paul Englishian drumming and Bobbi Nelsonian piano, Vincent Neil Emerson’s version of “Bloody Mary Morning” is familiar.
Now, Emerson doesn’t sound like Willie Nelson at the mic. But that doesn’t prevent his May 1, 2022, performance from being Familial, as well as familiar.
Emerson’s “Bloody Mary Morning” follows cuts by Ray Wylie Hubbard, Shinyribs, Margo Price and Nathaniel Rateliff in previewing the April 28 arrival of One Night in Texas: The Next Waltz’s Tribute to the Red Headed Stranger.
