"Please, let me go." "I won't let the chance go."
Hmm, I haven't said anything about this here.
On both April and July I posted a pair of small BL visual novels titled firstrain and lastrain for an annual game jam occasion, since it's the 1st anniversary of these characters getting together this year.
The O2A2 game jam came with a highly strict assets and word count limitation, but apparently it works well for telling the tale of beginning and ending of a lover's relationship, and I vaguely designed it so that depending on which one you read first, the interpretation would be different.

============= Review
Unmade Man is a very short VN game spanning a small conversation between you and Donovan a trader of sort during a zombie apocalypse. Exchanging some small talk is never unwelcome...
Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.
With the one thousand word and one sprite limit from the jam, Unmade Man is a very short and very sweet game, considering the setting. Through you small conversation with the man, you get to learn about his relationship with a small community (as a lone-wolf type of person, how the world is going (with the zombie roaming around and people looting things willy-nilly), and who he was before the apocalypse (a chemistry student).
The game itself is pretty simple and without consequences: you have two choices prompting slightly different topics, resulting in a bit of conversation. Two runs should be enough to cover all choices.
While the jam was pretty limiting, I did enjoy the choices made for the visual: the broken down city with a hint of nature taking over, the black and pink, the music... Depending on the line uttered, Donovan's facial expression will change.
Even with the incredibly dire setting, the mundane conversation kind of feels like something you'd have when crossing path with an acquaintance on the street, who shares a similar group of connections (save for the actual topics of zombies and looting). It is one of the most compelling and interesting aspect of the post-apocalyptic genre: whether humans strive to (re-)form a society/community or go further into wild behaviour for the sake of survival, what kind of past values and/or morals were kept or went discarded, how connections are formed when one can assume most modern technology does not work, how can people survive still...
I really liked the kindness in the exchanges, with Donovan not just catching up for the sake of catching up, but making a connection with you (even though he likes to be a lone wolf) and advises you on keeping some information for yourself or letting things you are not sure are useful (a.k.a you don't know how to use) for others.
The harshness of the setting (also depicted in the background and in the melancholy of the music) clashes with Donovan's kind behaviour and dashing smile.
Some random notes:
Loved the BDSM style on Donovan. Nothing screams more like post-apocalypse like a good leather and a nice choker.
The Bi-Pride necklace was really cute.
Is Donovan a vampire or does he just have sharp canines??
Weirdly, reminded me of Dalgrhen...
The game doesn't fit in my rating scale lol. Since the VNDB has a 1-10 scale, I'm going there for a good 7. Very enjoyable, even if too short for my taste. Quite lovely. Would waste another 15min replaying it every day.

✨Weekly Progress 2023 #13✨
Updated side image code for SYVNH
Finished lineart, flat color, and full color for SYNVH BG
Sketched monster 1 for EKL
Sketched word bubble types
Finished monster 1 sprite for EKL
Sketched O2A2 chara design
Sketched O2A2 CG design
Sketched little Ying design for KHP
Wrote 301 words for KHP script
Wow, when listed like this, it feels like I did a lot more than I thought.
Tumblr media
The last BG that didn't make it in time for Demo 2.0. It was originally sketched by @nightasobu!
Tumblr media
I did my best to design monsters for Exorcist Killing Lie... Not really sure how I did. Guess I'll see when I finally put the panels together for the game. Also ignore the inverted fu on Iago's earring, I just didn't flip properly for this mockup.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm joining O2A2 jam with @thechosengiraffewrites as an artist! This is some preliminary work I did for the jam that'll be starting in... wait, if I scheduled this post correctly, it would've started already.
Other than that...
In the current coming week, I'll be forcing myself to spend time finishing the SYVNH script. No more surrendering to writer's fear.

"A Tome in the Attic" is now up on itch.io! It's a visual novel with <1k words (5-10min) created for the Only One of Any Asset Queer Edition game jam
Grandma would often read me stories from a mysterious book every night before bed. After her passing, the tome and the stories seemed to die with her. But during a visit back home, I found it amongst the clutter. As I reached out to touch it… A demon appeared?

Sprite done! Special effects done! Text edited down to 1K!
All I really need to do now artwise is to finish the bg (which, as you can see, lol), wait for feedback, and finish up some details! Almost there!

Set in a world in which the sun has died, The Sun Atop a Column is a short (under 1k) IF piece made for O2A2 2021. It was a fun challenge to write a story under 1k words and only use one sprite, one bg and one music track. Really happy how this one turned out~! :D

I learned Renpy in a week for the O2A2 game jam and created a short VN! Only one sprite, one background, one music track, under 1k words... It’s a tiny project, but I’m quite proud of it!

'O2A2' Embraces LGBTQ+ With 'O2A2 VN Jam 2023 ~ Queer Edition ~'
Generally speaking, game jams enforce restrictions on participants, like a specific theme, time limit, game engine, game genre, or even all of the above. But this year's O2A2 VN Jam 2023 ~ Queer Edition ~ is a bit… different in that regard, as depicted by its full name: Only One of Any Asset. Very interesting and as shown in the title, very queer.

Threads of Snow by Butter Blanc
A Single Choice Jam entry.
Entry - IFDB Note: the author indicated this was their first game
This small game is a kinetic visual novel, where, unable to find sleep, you confess your deepest secret to your resting (unconscious) lover. One that would probably freak out a lot of people if they were told - think speculative fiction trope meets romance. Aside from the promised weather metaphors and alliterations, the game is essentially a monologue, recalling how the MC got to this point. One thing feels pretty murky: the MC might be a very selfish person for prioritising their feelings above the well being of her lover (as she knows what is to come) or this is a tragic groundhogs day tale where no one wins/breaks the cycle at the end. At the end of it, neither the prose nor the visual* really grabbed me. It is still quite a feat for a first game to write this many words, and put up the visual and code it all though. *I don't know if it was intentional, but the sprites were all pixelly during the page loadup.
