DÍA DE ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS EN CANADÁ 🇨🇦 El Día de Acción de Gracias en Canadá es un concepto histórico pero bastante flexible. Existen fechas y momentos claves, pero pareciera no haber una visión única. Muchos creen que se trata únicamente de una copia de la fiesta estadounidense que se celebra en noviembre, mientras algunos lo consideran una fiesta con tono religioso y otros con un toque más folclórico. El 31 de enero de 1957 el Parlamento de Canadá declaró el Día de Acción de Gracias como un feriado que se celebraría el segundo lunes del mes de octubre y daban en parte una explicación: “Un día de gracias al Dios todopoderoso por la generosa cosecha con la que Canadá ha sido bendecida”. Desde entonces esta ha sido la premisa principal que se ha utilizado para fundamentar la fiesta. Antes su visión fue cambiante y por muchos años estuvo ligada también a un factor militar, para celebrar el Día del Armisticio y dar gracias por el bienestar de las tropas canadienses, especialmente durante la Primera y la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Sin embargo pareciera no existir mucha información del porqué se come pavo, o porque la cena es lo más importante. Para muchos pareciera ser únicamente una versión canadiense de la fiesta estadounidense, una forma de justificar la grandeza, la pomposa cena o el tradicional juego de fútbol americano (o canadiense en este caso). Lo que puede ser Al final el Día de Acción de Gracias de Canadá es una muestra significativa de lo diversa que es esta sociedad, en la que se hace casi imposible hablar de absolutos y en la que siempre entra en juego la palabra inmigración. La evolución del término podría girar hacia simplemente una fecha para dar gracias, sin importar religión o creencias, sin importar el idioma o el origen. Today is Canada Day. I spent the first half of my life growing up in Canada. My family lived on a First Nations reservation, so I never questioned that the land all around us belonged to our hosts for generations. 

Between 1874 and 1996 indigenous children were taken from their families and placed in residential schools, where they were forced to assimilate while having their culture and language destroyed. Many of those children did not survive.

 Over the past year hundreds to thousands of bodies of indigenous children have been recovered at the sites of residential schools. 

Today many Canadians are mourning those murdered by skipping Canada Day and wearing orange or black in solidarity and acknowledgment of the indigenous land that they live on. 

Canada is a beautiful country, and I love every time I'm able to return home to visit. It's made more beautiful in my eyes to see Canadians working at bettering their relationships and their country by not shying away from a difficult past but by facing it head on and working at reconciliation.
