Meet a New Generation of Black American ‘Cowboys’

With these images, photographer Kennedi Carter smashes an age-old stereotype: Cowboys aren’t all white men on horses, battling Indigenous people.

Doniyel Hooker bought her horse, Chance, in 2018. Whenever possible, Hooker, a math and science teacher, brings Chance to her elementary school to provide new experiences for her students. She’s ridden Chance on trails and even through the French Quarter of New Orleans.

The first time I saw a Black horseman, I was maybe six years old. I’m 24 now, grew up in the suburbs of Durham, North Carolina, but my mother’s family is from Dallas, and we’d drive back to visit. I remember this as one of those things where you’re chilling in the back seat, you see something crazy, your head does a complete 180. Cowboys! The white-man-on-a-horse archetype; battles with Indigenous people: That’s what I was most familiar with, from going to the movies with my grandfathers. So about five years ago, as I began to photograph on film, I thought it would be very interesting to turn that cowboy narrative inside out a bit. It’s always important to expand the narrow confines of what we perceive to be American culture, and how we as Black people sit inside it.

I’ve had a whirlpool of feelings, being a witness to these people. There’s a rich history of Black American cowboys, but for my work I’ve used the word “equestrian”—more inclusive now, I think. For a long time I observed from the ground, asking equestrians whether I could photograph them; I’d never ridden a horse myself until I climbed onto one while visiting trainer Silas Plummer outside New Orleans. Did I feel fully comfortable or at home? No. I thought a lot about not falling off. But in the Louisiana town where my grandfather was born, his sharecropper family didn’t have cars, so one assumes they were using horses or mules to get around. That was beautiful to circle back to, very ancestral.

And my biggest takeaway, working with all the equestrians, is just how alive they feel when they’re on a horse. There’s a freedom that comes from interacting with animals, with nature, with the land. This is what one form of that freedom looks like.

From wranglers to rodeo riders to jockeys, Black men and women have made their mark in many areas of horsemanship. In the United States, for example, an estimated one in four cowboys in the late 19th century was Black.

MaLana Lewis first rode a horse at age five during a camping trip. Her family later got her into barrel racing classes, and she has collected 24 first-place ribbons with her horse, Star. This photograph was taken in 2020, when Lewis was nine.

In the early 1900s, Black communities held festivals and rodeos in cattle country across various southern states. Trigger was Vinsha Torain’s first horse, and the two have ridden together since the college student was 13. Torain helps run the family ranch, started by her grandfather, in Siler City, North Carolina, and also heads Torain Ranch’s riding club, composed mainly of Black women.

Left: Nat Love, also known as Deadwood Dick, was born into slavery on a Tennessee plantation in 1854. After the Civil War he moved west and spent 20 years driving cattle. He got his nickname in Deadwood, South Dakota, after beating out every other competitor in roping and shooting contests.

Jamel Robinson puts a client’s horse through exercises on a trail in Siler City. He started riding when he was four and training horses when he was 17. Robinson plans to stay in the business, which he learned from his father. “Horses keep me in a good mind space,” he says.

Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

The Yaquina Bay Light is a lighthouse that is located on the North side of Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon.

The light was built in 1871 for the port of Yaquina Bay, which was a highly popular area for shipping. However, due to the increased traffic occurring around the Oregon Coast, a new light was established at Yaquina Head in 1873 that rendered the Yaquina Bay light in excess. It would be extinguished only three years after its creation in 1874.

After years of neglect the light was renewed in 1878 in anticipation of the construction of a railroad from Willamette River to Yaquina Bay. Unfortunately the rail company declared bankruptcy in 1890 before it was completed. The building would receive its most use when it was occupied from 1906 to 1933 by the U.S. Lifesaving Service.

A year after being abandoned it was transferred to the State of Oregon in 1934 to be remade into a state park. Plans were made to demolish the structure for many years until it was saved by the Lincoln County Historical Society 1955. The Yaquina Bay light would be restored in 1976 and then relit as a privately maintained lighthouse in 1996.

A Ghost Town and a Ghost Story

Southern Oregon has it's fair share of old gold mines from the 1880 that have left a mark on, and in, the the area. Mixed in the tales of haunted mines and caves, there exists a story I heard of in high school of haunted mine located outside of Applegate, OR. Tales goes that Chinese miners were brought to the site after the white settlers and gold miners had have their pick. When the white foreman felt enough gold was brought up, he dynamited the mine, burying all of the Chinese miners underneath. While ghastly, the story is a microcosm of the very real racism that has steeped Oregon's history in the blood of many non-white peoples.

A grain of truth lies at the bottom of this tale, namely that while there WERE massacres of Chinese immigrants in the 1880s, they did not take place in Southern Oregon. In addition, a ghost town still survives in Southern Oregon outside of Applegate that was originally settled by Chinese miners. Combined these two stories have been combined over the decades to the story I heard while still a teen.

The actual massacre of Chinese gold miners took place in Hell's Canyon along the Snake River in 1887. A gang lead by Bruce Evans ambushed the miners of the series of two days, killing 34 in total and stealing up to $50,000.00 in gold. As with many racially tinged murders in 1880's Oregon, these men did not receive any sentencing for their crimes and the whole event was forgotten until documents were uncovered in 1995 at the Wallowa County Museum. It wasn't until 2005 that the area was renamed Chinese Massacre Cove, and in 2012 a marker was officially placed on the site.

As for the ghost town? It still stands. Buncom was built along the Little Applegate River in 1851. Gold, cinnabar, chromite, and silver were mined from the area surrounding Sterling Creek and Jacksonville until 1918. When the seams were picked dry, the town was abandoned. It wasn't until 1991 that the Buncom Historical Society was created to maintain what remained of the little town. You can still visit it, if you'd like, and see a small glimpse of Oregon's mining past.

In October 2020, Mark Meadows said it was futile to try "to control the pandemic", emphasizing instead a plan to contain it with vaccines and therapeutics. As the virus spread among White House staff in the fall of 2020, he reportedly sought to conceal the cases, including his own. After donald trump lost the 2020 presidential election, Meadows participated in donald trump's failed effort to overturn the election results and remain in power. On December 14, 2021, Meadows was held in criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the January 6 Select Committee. He is the first White House chief of staff since the Watergate scandal and first former member of Congress to have been held in contempt of Congress. The contempt charge was referred to the Justice Department, which declined to prosecute him. It's of utmost importance to remember that Aleister Crowley and Anton LaVey were sexual predators, domestic abusers, and con artists in the 1930s and 1960s. It's extremely unlikely that the Aleister Crowley and Anton LaVey farm animal face was ever intended, nor is it now intended, to fully liberate all women and girls from societal norms, expectations, and patriarchal oppression, repression, and domestic enslavement through "living out their darkest fantasies" that could then be used to exploit, extort, and force them back "into their place" in patriarchal 1930s and 1960s societies. The math isn't mathing, because that's never going to add up to female empowerment and equality in any age for any woman or girl.

On October 25, 2016, allegations were made by two men stating that Trump had attended and partaken in sex parties filled with underage minor females as young as 15 years old who were induced with promises of career advancement. Illegal drugs were also alleged to have been provided to the minors. One man was identified as model and actor Andy Lucchesi, while the other was identified as a fashion photographer who spoke on condition of anonymity. Both men claim to have been acquaintances of Trump during that decade, which one described as his "Trump days". The anonymous witness said Trump had sex with the girls, going from room to room, saying "[Trump would] wander off with a couple girls. I saw him. He was getting laid like crazy. Trump was at the heart of it. He loved the attention and in private, he was a total f*cking beast." He claimed the parties were attended by minors as young as 15 years of age, adding "I was there [only] to party myself. It was [other] guys with younger girls, sex, a lot of sex, a lot of cocaine, top-shelf liquor." Lucchesi, for his part, claimed that he saw Trump engage in sexual activity with the girls but did not witness him taking illicit drugs. In regards to the age of the girls, Lucchesi said he himself never specifically asked about their ages, only remarking of the attendees "a lot of girls, [aged] 14, look 24." (Wikipedia)

Public response A survey conducted by YouGov in October 2016 found that 43 percent of respondents found the allegations against Trump to be credible. Republicans were least likely to find the allegations credible, and only 19 percent of Republicans thought sexual assault would disqualify Trump from the presidency. (Wikipedia)

SolarWinds released the software updates to its customers not realizing that the updates were compromised. The trojanized code had provided the threat actor with a “backdoor”—a program that can give an intruder remote access to an infected computer. According to cybersecurity researchers, the threat actor was then able to remotely exploit the networks and systems of SolarWinds’ customers who had downloaded the compromised software updates using a sophisticated computing infrastructure. Since SolarWinds is widely used in the federal government to monitor network activity on federal systems, this incident allowed the threat actor to breach infected agency information systems. Day 4: Union Pacific 618

Union Pacific 618 is a class "C-57" 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type steam locomotive previously owned by the Union Pacific Railroad. The engine is now located in Heber City, Utah and owned by the Heber Valley Railroad. Built in July 1907 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works (BLW) of Eddystone, Pennsylvania, No. 618 is one of 12 surviving C-57 Series locomotives. The locomotive operated in revenue service until 1958. It was then donated to the State of Utah, where it sat on display for many years. In the mid 1960s, a full restoration effort began on the locomotive with the promise of heading up Utah's first tourist railroad in Heber City after the state donated the engine to the National Railway Historical Society. Today, it is one of UP's oldest locomotives and the first steam locomotive to be removed from a Public Park, and put back into operational condition in excursion service. The engine currently is out of service in Heber City, Utah undergoing restoration back to operating condition.

In July 1907, the Oregon Short Line Railroad received #1068. The 2-8-0 locomotive was part of the C-57 Class of locomotives for the OSL, which was a subsidiary of the Union Pacific. The 2-8-0 was part of a three locomotive order from the Oregon Short Line Railroad built that month by Baldwin and numbered 1066-1068.

During World War II, the locomotive pulled trains from the Ogden Yards to the Ogden Army Defense Base. This lasted from 1941-1945 when the Japanese surrendered. Afterward, the engine continued to handle freight in Utah and Idaho. Around 1949-1951, the standard square coal tender was replaced with a Vanderbilt styled tender. The reason why is still unknown. Through the 1950s, the locomotive continued to operate on freight duties until the engine was replaced by diesel locomotives on the Union Pacific. The locomotive's last assignment was to act as a snowplow near the Geneva Steel Mill. The Union Pacific had decided to donate 618 to the State of Utah with the agreement that the locomotive could not be sold, scrapped, or given to an out of state railroad.  In late May of 1958, the locomotive was fired up what some thought was the very last time. She pulled into the Diesel Complex in Salt Lake City. She was then pushed across North Temple Street to the County Fairgrounds and placed on display.

Initially, the locomotive was fairly well received by the public. However, after a while, the locomotive had started to become an eyesore. Many people wanted to get rid of 618, but the stipulations of the Union Pacific giving 618 to the state was that it couldn't be scrapped, sold, or given out of state. This prompted many to speculate what else to do with the locomotive. In the mid 1960s, there was a thought of just burying the engine. According to Stephen Carr, a historian at the Heber Valley Railroad, he stated that, "There was a thought of digging a big hole right next, next to it and tumbling it into the hole. Because nobody knew what else to do with it and nobody was interested in it."  In addition, the fairgrounds also were going to be expanded, and the locomotive needed to be moved to allow it. However, members of the National Railway Historical Society decided to step in and in 1969, they convinced the state to donate the engine to the Promontory Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. After the donation, the group started conversations with the state to use the locomotive in a brand new tourist railroad based out of Heber City, Utah on the Wasatch Railway Museum.

Two years earlier in 1967, the Denver & Rio Grande Western had abandoned the Provo Branch Line that linked Provo to Heber City. The tracks were planned to be ripped up and be turned over as an extension of U.S Route 189. everal locals and businessmen fought to keep the tracks in order to start a potential tourist operation. When the Wasatch Mountain Railway moved their equipment onto the branch, Utah told them to leave. UDOT gave the historical group until April 1, 1972 to move its equipment. The railroad more or less balked at the order and moved #618 to Heber City from Provo on December 7th, 1970.[4] By 1971, the railroad added to their fleet with Pacific Lumber Co. #35 and a 3-Truck Shay #4 from the Yosemite Lumber Company. In January 3, 1971, #618 was fired up and ran the first excursion on the Heber Creeper. In November, the state decided to rescind their eviction and granted the Wasatch Railway Museum a 25 year lease on the former branch.  It ran excursion trains from 1971 until 1976 when it was taken out of service. After sitting for ten years, the railroad moved the engine in the shops in 1986 were they began rebuilding the engine. It eventually return to service in 1989 and ran excursions trains until 1990 when it was once again taken out of service and put into storage. In 1992, State of Utah moved all of its railroad equipment for use by the Heber Valley Railroad. For two years, the engine sat on display until 1993 when it went into the shops for an overhaul. The rebuild was completed on May 13, 1995 and it pulled its first train of the 1995 season to Deer Creek Dam and back. In 2007, the locomotive celebration its 100th birthday and was relettered and renumbered as Oregon Short Line No. 1068. Shortly after the event, the locomotive would continue to haul passenger trains for another three years. In June 2010, the locomotive made its last runs before its boiler ticket expired. It haul its last trains during Memorial Day weekends for photo charters and was indefinitely taken out of service and put on static display in front of the railroad dept. n 2014, it was removed from its display track and moved into the shops for restoration back to service, it will be converted to burn oil once finished.

The Great Bend Chorale has commissioned John Muehleisen's new choral cantata, "Bending Borders," in the hopes of bringing this important work to Central Oregon. This commission was made possible thanks to the support of the Mason County Historic Preservation Committee and Sierra Pacific Industries. The piece has since been reissued and performed by 12 choral organizations in the U.S. and Mexico. The film will tackle the problem of prejudgments, a common human condition. We all have them and are unaware of them. In the process, people can improve their discussion skills and self-awareness. Ultimately, they can break down the walls and create more interactive transnational spaces. And once they have learned how to do this, they can apply it anywhere. It will only take a few hours and a few film-nights to begin the conversation. The films will explore the history of Mexican culture and history. While the film is intended to be educational, the focus of the program is on fostering dialogues among WNY residents and institutions of higher learning. Ultimately, the goal is to break down the walls that divide us and foster an open and collaborative culture. It is an essential step toward creating a more tolerant and peaceful world. It is possible to overcome these barriers and move towards a more multicultural community. Despite the many challenges we face in creating inclusive spaces, the goal of Bending Borders is to promote cross-cultural understanding. A major aim of the project is to address the issue of prejudgments in an honest and open manner. This project will not only increase individual awareness, but it will also help people develop discussion skills and foster an open environment for cross-cultural interaction. If we can break down the barriers in WNY, it will affect the rest of the country and the world. The program also aims to address the issues of prejudice. In addition to tackling the problem of prejudice, Bending Borders also aims to promote cross-cultural dialogues. In this way, a culturally diverse audience can better understand and appreciate the works of others. This program is available for anyone who wants to learn about the different cultures and their culture. The film is also part of a larger global project. And it encourages participation by people with different backgrounds. And the project is not only about the films; it also promotes discussion skills between people from diverse backgrounds. This project aims to address the issue of prejudgments in a holistic way. Although everyone has prejudgments, the program's participants are encouraged to examine their own prejudgments, as well as those of others. By establishing these dialogues, the film hopes to foster an understanding of other cultures. This process is bound to result in a more diverse community, and it will not be limited to the WNY region. In this film, a group of people from diverse backgrounds and cultural backgrounds come together to discuss issues that are relevant to them. This group of people aims to learn about the experiences of others and to foster mutual understanding between them and those from different cultures. The goal of the film is to make everyone aware of their own prejudgments, and to foster dialogues between individuals. This is a vitally important topic for the film, and it is not only about building bridges, but about the world.

Apple hunters recover ten "lost" varieties from forgotten farms

The Lost Apple Project is a nonprofit that scours rural woodlands that were once farms, looking for apple trees whose varieties were thought to be extinct. They just had their best year, ever.

Oregon's Temperate Orchard Conservatory did analyzes the cuttings that Lost Apple discovered last October and November "from 140-year-old orchards tucked into small canyons or hidden in forests that have since grown up around them in rural ID and WA."

They confirmed 10 pioneer-era varieties, previously believed to be lost. Lost Apple's founders relied on "old maps, county fair records, newspaper clippings and nursery sales ledgers" to locate them. Many of the trees they harvested from were dying - they were just in time!

Overall, the group has recovered 23 varieties. This year's batch includes the ancient Turkish Sary Sinap,  the Streaked Pippin (possibly from NY state, 1744) and the PA Butter Sweet (earliest known origin 1901).

Temperance Orchard relies on old USDA watercolor illustrations and old botany textbooks to make their identifications.

Alas, Lost Apple is threatened by the closure of the fairs where they sell lost varieties to fund their shoestring operation.

Last February I gave a talk at the Oregon Brewers Guild dinner. None of us knew what was ahead for public health, the economy, and social change. I love giving talks and will certainly repurpose this one, but for now, here are the slides and script with a few additions to reflect the pandemic shut down and updated screenshots from the beer guides.

In the spring of 1980, Charles and Shirley Coury, who had owned a vineyard for 13 years in Forest Grove, opened a brewery Portland. They called it Cartwright Brewing Company (Cartwright was Shirley’s maiden name) and their first offering was 150 cases of a mild, English-style ale called Cartwright Portland.

Coury found century-old beer beer-making recipes in “beautiful, old brewing textbooks” in the stacks of the Multnomah County Library. He also made Legal Lager and Deliverance Ale, the latter an attempt to raise money to keep the business open. The beer was nearly $1 per bottle, which was more than customers expected to pay; but the price point wasn’t the issue, the inconsistency was. Although Cartwright closed in 1981, it roused consumers’ appetite for a locally made, small-batch beer, but it also inspired the brewers who came a few years later.

The mid to late 1980s were an exciting time for Oregon Beer. 

Richard and Nancy Ponzi, also winemakers, opened Columbia River Brewing (later called BridgePort) and brothers Kurt and Rob opened Widmer Brewing (they added “Brothers” to the company’s name a few years later). Karl Ockert, a recent UC Davis graduate with a degree in winemaking, joined the Ponzis summer 1983 at their vineyard. He and Ponzi were interested in beer and began planning a brewery and portfolio of ales. One became their namesake: BridgePort Ale. Others followed: the award-winning BridgePort India Pale Ale, Blue Heron Pale Ale (named after Portland's official city bird), and a barley wine named "Old Knucklehead." BridgePort was acquired by The Gambrinus Company, owned by Carlos Alvarez, in 1995. Brewery operations ceased in February 2019, and the brew pub closed the next month.  

Kurt Widmer enjoyed homebrewing and full-flavored beer. After seeing Chuck Coury’s brewery he knew he had a chance at success. His brother quit his job, his father came out of retirement, and his sister in Germany joined as a partner. Their first beer was a Dusseldorf-style Alt and in 1986, they introduced their "Hefeweizen" to America. Rather than a traditional Hefeweizen characterized by distinctive yeast flavors, this was an unfiltered version of their existing wheat beer (Weizenbier) and used Cascade hops. They served it with a slice of lemon to accentuate the citrus flavors of the Cascade hops. In 2007, Redhook Ale Brewery and Widmer Brothers merged to form a new company called Craft Brewers Alliance, which was later renamed as Craft Brew Alliance. In January 2019, Widmer Brothers Brewing closed its taproom after 22 years. In November, 2019 Anheuser-Busch purchased the remainder of CBA.

Fred Bowman started homebrewing after receiving a “How To” guide from high school friend Jim Goodwin, who was also a talented jazz musician. They brewed test batches in Bowman’s basement and were soon joined by high school friend Art Larrance. In 1984, Bowman and Larrance had a franchise agreement for Portland Brewing Company to produce Bert Grant’s Scottish Ale and Russian Imperial Stout and had leased the 58-year-old Holly Farms creamery building in Portland, but they needed more money before they could open. The two raised $125,000 with a common stock offering and leased equipment from Imperial Leading in Lake Oswego. “Mac” MacTarnahan invested $25,000 and in 1992 they named MacTarnahan’s Pale Ale after him; it became the Portland Brewing’s flagship brew. By 1998 the company was in financial trouble, and that year MacTarnahan bought $3.5 million in debt in exchange for stock. Portland Brewing Company merged with Saxer Brewing Company of Lake Oswego in 2000. In 2004, MacTarnahan, then 88 years old, sold the company to Pyramid Breweries of Seattle. In 2008, Pyramid was acquired by Magic Hat Brewing Company, which was subsequently bought by North American Breweries and then by the Costa Rican company Florida Ice & Farm Company.

McMenamins is famous for brewpubs, music, and hotels. Many of their locations are in rehabilitated historical properties and at last nine are on the National Register of Historic Places. McMenamins was founded by brothers Mike and Brian McMenamin, who grew up in northeast Portland, Oregon. Their influence began in 1974 with the opening of Produce Row Café, which soon made a name as one of Portland's first bars devoted to quality imports and craft beer. Don Younger’s Horse Brass Pub, which opened in 1976, was also an essential component in increasing consumer access and awareness of imported and local beer, as well as provided a community space to share beer experiences. In 1985, the McMenamins opened Oregon’s first brewpub in the Southwest Portland neighborhood of Hillsdale with brew master Carlos Santos. They didn’t adhere to a style and their beers were often unsettling to brewing traditionalists; they used ingredients like blackberries, apples, blueberries, spices, and candy bars. Their first theater pub, and the first in Oregon, was the Mission Theater & Pub (1987). The company then entered the broader hospitality business starting in 1990, when they converted a 74-acre site (that at one time served as the Multnomah County Poor Farm) into McMenamins Edgefield.

One major event that impacted the trajectory of the beer industry in Oregon in the 1980s was legislation that married production and sales. 

Before 1985, brewpubs were essentially illegal in Oregon. The state’s post-Prohibition laws said alcohol manufacture and retail could not occur on the same premises; instead, breweries had to work with a third-party distributor to add taps and sell their product. Bowman, Larrance, the Ponzis, the Widmers, and the McMenamin were instrumental in lobbying to legalize the marriage of production and on-site sales. 

In early 1985 House Bill 2284 proposed a brewery-public house license that would allow the brewing and selling of malt beverages at the same location; however, wholesale beer suppliers feared new brewpubs would cut into business and launched a counter campaign. On May 9, 1985 HB 2284 was tabled and died. The second bill, SB 813, proposed a bed and breakfast license to permit the sale of beer and wine, as well as a brewery-public house license for manufacturers producing less than 25,000 barrels of malt beverage. On July 13, 1985, Governor Vic Atiyeh signed Senate Bill 813, the “Brewpub Bill,” into law. It allowed brewers to make and sell beer on the same premises, key for increasing revenue and gaining new customers.

Although growth over the next 10 years was slow, throughout the 1980s, four other breweries opened in other parts of the state: Full Sail Brewing (Hood River) and Oregon Trail Brewery (Corvallis) in 1987, and Deschutes Brewery (Bend) and Rogue Ales (originally in Ashland) in 1988. Portland has always had the largest concentration of breweries and Central Oregon has seen exceptional growth, but breweries have opened in new areas to attract diverse consumers. Examples include Calapooia (1993, Albany), Cascade Lakes Brewing Company (1994, Redmond), Terminal Gravity (1996, Enterprise), Barley Brown’s (1998, Baker City), Walkabout Brewing (1997, Medford), Ninkasi (2006, Eugene), Fort George (2007, Astoria), and Block 15 (2008, Corvallis).

A maturing industry needed skilled brewers and since its establishment in 1995, Oregon State University’s Fermentation Science program in the Food Science and Technology department has led brewer education. Homebrew clubs and organizations around Oregon have also provided training for future professionals. Founded in Portland in 1979, the Oregon Brew Crew is one of the oldest and largest home brewing clubs in the United States; it is appropriate that their meetings are held at F.H. Steinbart, a homebrew shop founded in 1918 and the oldest in the country. Other pioneering clubs include the Heart of the Valley Homebrewers (1982, Corvallis) and the Cascade Brewers Society (1982, Eugene).

The Oregon Brewers Guild fills an important role as a non-profit advocate for the state’s breweries; founded in 1992, it is one of the nation's oldest craft brewer associations. Two other important organizations to support increased gender equity in brewing started in Oregon. The Pink Boots Society was founded in 2007 by Teri Fahrendorf, former brewmaster at Steelhead Brewing in Eugene, as a professional organization to support women in the brewing industries. In 2011, Pink Boots members created Barley’s Angels as an educational community for consumers; it became its own organization in 2012.

In addition to more breweries to choose from, consumers had other ways to engage with beer. The Oregon Homebrew Festival, established in 1982, is the Pacific Northwest’s oldest homebrew competition; others followed, including the KLCC Brewfest Homebrew Competition and SheBrew. The Oregon Brewers Festival (established 1988) is one of the nation’s longest running and largest craft beer festivals; others throughout the state include the Portland Craft Beer Festival, the Festival of Dark Arts in Astoria, Bend Brewfest, and Mt. Angel's Oktoberfest.

The increasing popularity of homebrewing and accessibility of imported beers certainly had an impact on the preferences and palates of consumers, as did writing about beer in the public press. Fred Eckhardt was a well-known advocate, critic, educator, mentor, and historian, and his written work on beer and brewing encouraged generations of people to think about beer in new ways. Inspired by a 1972 visit to Anchor Steam Brewery, Eckhardt became an avid proponent of tasteful, complex craft brews. He urged people to focus on flavor, style, and experience in the Oregonian, and also wrote regular articles in national industry publications like Celebrator Beer News and All About Beer. He rose to prominence with his 1970 A Treatise on Lager Beers, a guide to homebrewing and the evolution of lager beer, and 1989 The Essentials of Beer Style. 

The Oregon Hops and Brewing Archives acquired his papers in 2015, and I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to preserve and provide access to materials that document such important moments in this history.

In more recent years, as print publications have folded, blogs, podcasts, and news aggregate sites have dominated Oregon beer news and information. Reporting about the beer industry has changed a lot in the past year, and I am grateful that there are still web sites like New School Beer and Brewpublic, as well as notable journalists and authors like Jeff Alworth, Denny Conn, and John Abernathy reporting on local issues.

Electronic, paper, oral histories? I’m interested in collecting all the things that document the industry. In the last year we’ve added collections from the Oregon Brewers Guild, Widmer Brothers Brewing, the Pink Boots Society and Barleys Angels.

We have Fred Eckhardt’s papers, as well as Denny Conns and a collection of research materials from Pete Dunlop. Other collections include Master Brewers of America District Northwest Chapter Records, the Oregon Hop Growers Association, and scanned collections from both Fred Bowman and Art Larrance.

MEET THE STAFF: Chris Lehrbach, Director of Development Chris recently joined our staff as the Director of Development. Originally from Portland, Oregon, he relocated to Rhode Island from Texas. Prior to joining the SSHSA, Chris worked in the airline industry, most recently at American Airlines as a Flight Service Manager, directly supervising 160 flight attendants and serving as the departmental manager for the LAX-JFK market. Chris is also experienced in the non-profit realm, having served as a guide on board the USS Blueback at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, in Academic Programs and Museum Affairs at the Preservation Society of Newport County, and as an intern here at the SSHSA while he attended Salve Regina University, from which he graduated as valedictorian of his class with a Bachelor of Arts in Historic Preservation in 2015.
