In Memoriam: Hilary Mantel

Today we learned of the passing of beloved author Dame Hilary Mantel. In memoriam, we are sharing a first edition copy of her celebrated novel Wolf Hall, which focuses on the life and career of Thomas Cromwell in the court of Henry VIII up to the execution of Anne Boleyn. Wolf Hall received both the Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award and was published in 2009 by Fourth Estate. The sequel, Bring up the Bodies also received the Booker Prize and the third book in the trilogy, The Mirror & the Light, was longlisted for the same award. She wrote 9 other novels, 2 short story collections, a memoir, and essays and reviews for various outlets. Her work has also been developed for the stage and Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies were brought to life in a tv mini-series which aired on the BBC in the UK and PBS Masterpiece Theater in the United States (it is available for streaming through Amazon). 

Our copy of Wolf Hall is signed by Mantel, who used the last line of the book in her inscription: “Early September. Five days. Wolf Hall.” It is one of my favorite books, with the other books in this trilogy right up there with it. Mantel will be missed, but we will always have the work she has left behind as her legacy.

Well, I decided to make a little fan blog for Miss Scarlet & the Duke, and having finished season 3 over a week ago I do have some feelings about it. I know I’m not the only one, but I was disappointed with William over his bullheadedness and just the whole mess with Arabella, though she appears to be the catalyst for Eliza and William finally (hopefully) figuring their stuff out. Though, I must admit, I really did like the episode where she works with Nash, and episode 6 was a lot of fun where the focus was a little beyond just the two of them. I honestly think William needs to appreciate Eliza more 🤷🏻‍♀️

So, this has been on my mind for years, and I finally decided to make a post about it here. Hopefully someone in the Tumblr-verse, or whatever we call it, knows what I'm talking about.

Anyway, I remember a movie or whatever on PBS it was a period movie and in it an older man loses his head but he doesn't die and asks the body to come back and get his head. Then later a beautiful young woman asks him to take her through this door and he does, knowing it will kill him or something like that and the story ends in a sun lit tomb with two graves of a man and a woman both are covered in stone with a statue of each person on top, there is a white rose in between them, and the beautiful woman is standing dressed in a wedding dress with her groom in front of the graves and they kiss before the end credits begin.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about please say. I'm thinking it was in either the very late 1990s or early 2000s of that is at all helpful. I know it seems a little far out there, but I remember it.

Hmmm....Which version of Endeavour am I watching?

Cut scenes? Different music? Turns out there are actually up to 4 different versions of every episode of Endeavour! 

What are they you ask?

Here you go...

UK Initial Broadcast version: What went out over the airwaves when the episode premiered. In most cases this does not differ from other UK versions of the episode. However, certain pieces of music—such as Dean Martin’s song Sway in the S2E3 episode of the same title—were so expensive to license that the production was only able to afford the original song for that first broadcast. Repeats had to make do with a substitute piece of music composed to replace the original.  In the case of Sway, the replacement piece was at least specifically commissioned and written for the episode. It was not purchased as a generic composition from a production music library, which is usually what happen in this situation.

This version is only available if you recorded it at the time or know someone who did.

UK Version (Repeats and DVDs): The UK Repeats and DVDs are the definitive versions. Nothing is cut from the original broadcast and they have the soundtrack from the original broadcast—with a few exceptions, like the one mentioned above.

International Version with Cuts (PBS Masterpiece Theater version, both streaming and some DVDs): This version is what I would consider the “worst” option. First, each episode is cut for length by 5 to 8 minutes so that it will fit into the PBS time slot. Second, this version also uses the international version of the soundtrack. Most of the classical music from the UK version remains the same. However, most of the popular music (i.e. Rolling Stones, Kinks, Velvet Underground, etc.) was too expensive to license internationally and was replaced with generic production music. It’s a standard practice in the industry because music licensing is incredibly complicated and pricey, but it still sucks.

International Full-Length Version (Amazon Streaming, iTunes, etc.): These are at least the complete episode. None of the content is cut. The current exception to this may be S9, which is still only available on Amazon via the PBS streaming service. However, at this point, I’m not sure if PBS made the usual cuts to S9. For all other seasons, however, I know for sure that the version on Amazon is complete. It does, however, have the international and not the UK soundtrack.

Other stuff:

If you are looking to purchase physical DVDs, it’s important to be aware of 1) which version you want and 2) which version you can actually access. Most of the DVDs for sale in the US will only play in US DVD players and most for sale in the UK will only play in UK DVD players. If you want to be able to play DVDs from anywhere, you need to purchase a region-free DVD player. 

Even then, however, you need to be careful about which version of the show is on any given DVD set. In the US, at least, it can be very difficult to tell from the packaging or purchasing information whether or not a particular set is the full-length version or the one with cuts. The good news is that most of the DVDs are full-length. The bad news is that there are a few sets that are not and I haven’t gone through one-by-one to identify which ones those are—so just be careful.

As far as I know, the DVDs for sale in the US all have the international soundtrack. If you want to hear the UK soundtrack, you’ll have to get that region-free DVD player and the UK versions.

Absolutely no idea why, but lately I've been on a bender of watching David Tennant shows. I'd already seen Doctor Who, Broadchurch, and Staged, but here are some other things I found easily available recently, in case anyone else is on this journey:

YouTube (the normal free version): Takin' Over the Asylum: 23yo David Tennant with floppy 90s hair! From the few clips I'd seen I was expecting something like Saved By the Bell Goes to Rehab, but it's surprisingly good. Blackpool: Bonus David Morrissey! This is a slightly bizarre concept for a TV series, but I actually dug it. It's pretty much your usual musical where people just stop what they're doing every so often to sing and dance, but instead of musical-type numbers they're all singing along to existing recorded pop music, Carpool Karaoke style. David Tennant plays a cop who is a far cry from his Broadchurch character. Hamlet (incomplete): Bonus Patrick Stewart! The video I found had maybe 20 minutes missing from the end, but maybe the rest is out there somewhere. This theater show uses Shakespeare's original words, but the costumes and props are updated. It's really compelling. Much Ado About Nothing: Bonus Catherine Tate! Basically the same Shakespeare treatment as Hamlet. David and Catherine are so good in this, separately and together, and there are a lot of hilarious bits.

Tubi (free): The Decoy Bride: Out of all of these, I found this one the weirdest, just because what is David Tennant doing in a mediocre contrived romantic comedy? But it's cute and not terrible.

Amazon Prime (not free of course, but you might already have it for Good Omens): Bright Young Things: You'd probably watch this more for Michael Sheen (who is fantastic), but it's fun that they're both in it! Casanova (FreeVee, with ads): Bonus Nina Sosanya! The only romantic pairing I've seen of her and David. This is apparently a PBS Masterpiece Theater production, so I was expecting something a little stodgier, but this was often silly--in a good way! This show was right before, and led directly to, David's run in Doctor Who, and you can see a lot of the Tenth Doctor-to-be. Single Father: Bonus Suranne Jones! Not my favorite. Sad things happen, people make bad decisions. Still worth watching imo.

Essential listening, Babies.

I cannot emphasize how formative this record in particular (and the Firesign Theater guys in general) was, as well as seeing all the Monty Python episodes on PBS, and watching all the Python films as they came out, all of these...all were essential to my sense of comedy and humor. Robin Williams' stream of consciousness style came after these guys.

The "Nick Danger, Third Eye" old radio show program parody that is "Side 2" on the record is a MASTERPIECE of current-events comedy. There is an entire shtick built around a coupla songs on the Beatles' White Album...it's pure gold.

The Nick Danger side also has great fun with the old Foley Artist sound effects. "If you're so smart, why don't you pick your cues faster? Better get 'em up out of the celophane before they scorch!"

Hell, I could go on…LISTEN!

All Creatures Great and Small (2020)

Basic Story: James Herriot works as a veterinary surgeon in the Yorkshire Dales in the late 1930s.

Fan Thoughts: The series of books All Creatures Great and Small has had many adaptations to film and television since their release in the 1970s, including a series running on the BBC from 1978 until 1990.  However, there were changes made to the story for this most recent series; giving the housekeeper Mrs. Hall and Helen, James’ love interest, more expanded roles.  The author James Alfred Wight, who wrote under the penname James Herriot, set the books in 1937 which was slightly earlier than his own experiences as a veterinarian; he graduated from veterinary college in 1939 which meant he began practicing right at the outbreak of the war.  Having the story start in 1937 is really quite clever because it gives the audience nearly three full seasons to get to know the characters and the community in the Yorkshire Dales before the war starts and totally changes the landscape.  During the third season there are increasing mentions of the war as tensions increase in Europe, often brought to the screen through radio broadcasts.  When war is finally declared, the main cast is gathered around the radio, and with the audience having known them for so long their reactions have significantly more impact. Most media set in World War II spends a very little of the story on the characters’ time before the war, but being able to extensively see their lives before gives more weight to the changes that are coming.  Some quick research showed that James Alfred Wight and Brian Sinclair, the real Tristan Farnon, both served in the war but it’s hard to say where the show will take them given the changes they’ve already made to the story.  The series as a whole is pleasant and charming in its’ telling, similar to Downton Abbey; in fact the first episode is directed by Brian Percival who directed six episodes of Downton Abbey.  Another lovely series from Masterpiece theater, the fourth season will be very interesting to watch by having a perspective from the home front and those serving simultaneously.
