Things I expected in Del Toro's Pinocchio:
A cute little puppet boy
Characters dancing and having fun
A talking cricket
Some sad bits that add to the depth of the film and make the happy parts more meaningful
Things I did not expect in Del Toro's Pinocchio:
Pinocchio pointing out hypocrisy in Christian beliefs and morals
Geppetto becoming an alcoholic due to his depression following the death of his son
Geppetto's son dying from a bombing during world war 1
Pinocchio telling Mussolini to eat shit and immediately getting shot
Pinocchio being kidnapped and sent to a facist child soldier camp

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio versus all the other iterations that have come out recently really exemplifies the issue that at a fundamental level the desire to roll out A list actor filled cash grabs of live action remakes of old movies does not understand the nature of media. Certain forms of art- and I feel that I cannot stress this enough- do not mesh well onto a different form of art. Sometimes they can, and it’s wonderful, but very often I’m finding that a lot of remakes are missing the point of how animation is its own medium, stop motion is its own medium, video games and books and even television vs movies are all their own mediums. You really have to know when you’re making something if this is the right form of it, because if not it ends up looking cheep despite the millions of dollars spent to create the whole fucking thing. And a little bit of love and creativity doesn’t hurt either. I think studios to a large degree underestimate how much the creator’s passion imbued in a film translates through the screen to an audience, because we really can feel it. Sure, we all watch shitty TV and moves once in a while, but when something actually moving comes around there’s never any doubt of how masterful it is. And you just don’t ever really get that with soulless billion dollar remakes. Anyways Guillermo del Toro fucking rocks and everybody should go watch Pinocchio.

things i noticed during my second watch of pinocchio:
carlo is killed in the church while looking at the jesus. later, pinocchio gets crucified and loses the same arm that the jesus statue did
the circle vignette gfx of geppetto in front of the exploded church is the only one in the entire film - this type of transition is called an iris wipe or iris shot
i love the wood instrument soundtrack
probably obvious but the fairy lights that look like will o the wisp are the angel’s eyes
“i look after the small things, the forgotten things” camera pans to geppetto
pinocchio’s little yodeling in his first song - they’re in northern italy. the map of the carnival’s travel also shows this
in the church scene, when ppl are calling pinocchio a devil and witch and so on, one lady calls him “demonio!” even though the english captions say ‘demon’
additionally, someone yells “malocchio!” which means evil eye
pinocchio getting new feet parallels carlo getting new shoes in the beginning
volpe… vulpes… fox, as in the character from the book
relatedly, his cane has a fox head carved on it
during pinocchio’s first show, volpe promises to make him “burn bright like a star,” and then he uses those exact words when he tries to kill pinocchio
he also calls pinocchio a fire hazard
it’s the podesta and his wife that hit pinocchio with the truck
during the ciao papa song, when geppetto is walking in the rain, sebastian cricket has a tiny red umbrella
mussolini’s giant red convertible has a gold hood ornament. the hood ornament is a tinier mussolini doing the facist salute
the signs held by the crowd that greets mussolini at catania say “SI!”
the ceiling pillar in the boys barracks says OBBEDIRE COMBATTERE
the music that plays in the bg during the kids’ flag/war game is an instrumental of the propaganda song pinocchio sang earlier
when sebastian is in geppetto’s shirt pocket, it’s right over the old man’s heart (aka where he lives in pinocchio)
carlo’s grave was carved by geppetto, but geppetto’s and spazzatura’s graves were carved by pinocchio

I'm very late to be jumping on the bandwagon, but I'm so confused that some people are surprised that Guillermo del Toro, a person who helped create
a film where the protagonists are sheltering in an orphanage that's run by Republican loyalists and being targeted by Francisco Franco's bombs,
a film where the antagonists are occult Nazis (and Rasputin) who want to unleash eldritch beings upon the world,
a film where the major antagonist is a sociopathic Falangist captain who is hunting the Spanish Maquis, either murders or is responsible for the deaths of most of the rest of the cast, and might just be more monstrous than the child-eating monster with eyes in its' hands,
a book trilogy and a television series where one of the major antagonists is a Nazi, we're shown the wholly unsympathetic reasons for how and why he became a Nazi, he repeatedly targets, torments and tortures one of the major protagonists because he despises him for being Jewish, and in the final act of the story the vampires take over at least North America and put all the humans in camps to be farmed,
a film where the major antagonist is a cruel Colonel in the American army in the 1960s who tortures and plans to vivisect the imprisoned Amphibian Man, and is defied and thwarted by a mute woman, a Black woman, a gay man and a Russian spy,
and now a film where the characters suffer under the Italian Fascist regime, a little boy is forcibly recruited into the army alongside other children because he'll make 'the perfect soldier' and Mussolini is outright mocked to his face,
hates fascism???
Now where did that come from?????
