#Poor Fingolfin

Text
The very beginning of the First Age was such a bad time for Fingolfin:
his youngest son is killed,*
he learns that his older brother, who is the reason why all of them are right now in Beleriand, has been dead for a while,
one of his nephews is a prisoner in Angband and nobody really knows his fate,
a civil war might start any day now - Fingolfin's people are not in the best mood after the horrors of Helcaraxë and Fëanor's host did not follow Fëanor because of their love for Ñolofinwë.
And now his OLDEST SON AND HEIR, precious Fingon DISAPPEARS. Maybe someone saw him leaving the camp and going north, with just a bow and his harp? Or maybe they suddenly realize that prince Findekáno has not returned from his walk? Anyway, Fingolfin panics - this is a dangerous, unknown land. Angband is so close. Orcs can be anywhere. It could even be another trap set up by Morgoth to capture yet another prince. But Fingolfin can't stand losing another child. He won't lose another child.
If elves' hair could turn gray as a consequence of stress, Fingon would surely be welcomed back in the camp by a white-haired figure strangely resembling his father.
And just as Fingolfin can finally sit down and rest (Fingon is most certainly grounded, Maedhros seems to be recovering, feanorians behave, at least for now), he gets the crown. No rest for poor Ñolofinwë, apparently. Just new responsibilities.
*if we consider a version of the story that includes Argon, what we will most certainly do for the maximum drama :)

Finwë, to Fëanor: Your brother is upset. Did you two have a fight?
Fëanor: ??
Finarfin: He's probably upset because you didn't give him anything for his birthday.
Fëanor: Don't be a fool, I gave him a card.
The card:

*during the time Nerdanel and Fëanor are courting*
Nerdanel: hey Fingolfin!
Fingolfin, formally and standing about 3meters away: Lady Nerdanel, how may I assist you?
Nerdanel, comes up closer: had Fëanor always been very...
Fingolfin: *stepping away when she comes closer*
Nerdanel: what are you doing?
Fingolfin: I was specifically told to keep a 3 or more meters distance away from you.
Nerdanel:
Nerdanel: By Fëanor?
Fingolfin: yes
Nerdanel: of course he did 🙄 😮‍💨

How horrible must Maedhros and Fingon’s relationship have been for Fingolfin? Fingon’s closeness to Maedhros leads him to become a kinslayer at Alqualondë. Maedhros also bears some responsibility (from Fingolfin’s point of view) for the horror of the grinding ice. He lost his daughter-in-law, and Argon might have survived had they arrived in Middle-Earth by different means. He may learn Maedhros stood aside later, but how much does he really believe that?
Fingon then goes to rescue Maedhros from Angband, risking a fate worse than death. He brings Maedhros back, and Maedhros abdicates for Fingolfin. Now Fingolfin is undisputed high king, but he needs Maedhros and his brothers to be kept in line, and for that he needs Fingon. But I think Fingolfin understands Maedhros well, and worries for Fingon. Maedhros does love Fingon, very very deeply. But he’d trample his heart in an instant if it got him closer to the silmarils.
But Fingolfin can’t break them apart, he sees how much Fingon loves Maedhros, and he needs that relationship to keep Maedhros loyal. He’s using Fingon as well.

“Nolofinwe wasn’t trying to assurp his brother-” but wouldn’t it be so much more fun if he was? Just imagine thinking your only problem in life is becoming the heir of your father’s kingdom over your brother, you know? A normal court drama, with significantly less risks because everything’s a little vanilla in valinor.
And all of a sudden your dad’s dead, your people are leaving your home land, your brother and his sons have sworn an oath that in no way shape or form seems to be a good idea, and then your brother and his followers end up killing elves for boats of all things, and at this point you kind of want to go back but your kids are going and at this point you are committed, and it all goes down hill from there.
Like, this was not what he signed up for. Maybe a bit of subterfuge, maybe a life long fued with his brother, because hey, they’re in valinor, it’s not like things were really at risk of going horribly wrong, so you thought, lets spice up life a bit and try to become heir bc it’s not like anything will come of it, it’s not like finwe was ever gonna die. And the next thing you know, your entire family is either a criminal, dead or dying.
Like, i genuinely believe the issue of succession wasn’t that deep, bc obviously it’s not as if there was any real risk or danger in court, given the fact that they lived in the blessed lands, so a number of elves probably didn’t take it that seriously, until all of a sudden it went from 0 to 100 real quick.

"feanorians shouldn't be blamed for helcaraxe it wasn't their responsibility" BITES YOU BITES YOU BITES YOU
FINGOLFIN ISN'T ARAFINWE
FINGOLFIN CAN'T SIMPLY RETURN HE'S BASICALLY COVERED IN BLOOD
MAY I REMIND YOU THEY HAD AS MUCH PART IN STEALING THE BOATS AS THE FIRST HOUSE, IT WAS A GROUP EFFORT
NOLOFINWE BECAME A KINSLAYER FOR FEANOR, HIS KIDS BECAME KINSLAYERS FOR FEANOR'S KIN, HIS PEOPLE BECAME KINSLAYERS FOR FEANOR'S PEOPLE
they cut EVERYTHING off for feanorians, they burned all the bridges and all the ties, and they can't return because it wouldn't be an act of repentance
And they can't trust the Valar!!! Mandos literally doomed them a week ago!!! What will Valar do with a host of a murderous kin? Will they judge "blood for blood", will they doom them to another exile?? Who knows!!!!!
Feanor left them at the mercy of the Valar he so greatly distrusts. He spit them in the face for all their efforts, he blatantly dismissed their sacrifice. Fingolfin's people want to see Middle-Earth, they are swayed by Feanor's speeches and by his promises, OF COURSE they march through Helcaraxe instead of returning to the beings in power whom they don't trust!!
(also, if you want to blame anyone for Helcaraxe who isn't feanor so much - finrod is LITERALLY right there. poor little meow meow with no blood on his hands who's father choose to return but who leads his people through the cold and deadly path nonetheless)

This is why Gil-galad may NOT be Orodreth's son
If Gil-galad is Orodreth's son, then why does he follow the Nolofinwean color scheme?
Gil's armorial device is the same blue as Fingolfin's and Earendil's, or very near it. Gil's device consists of 12 silver stars, four of them resembling the star at the center of Earendil's device and four resembling the little stars on Fingolfin's device. The remaining four seem to be original.
In the lay of Leithian, a stanza describes Fingolfin before the gates of Angband:
"In that vast shadow once of yore
Fingolfin stood: his shield he bore
with field of heaven's blue and star
of crystal shining pale afar"
- Lay of Leithian, Canto XII
The above verse implies that Fingolfin's shield actually looks more like Gil's or Earendil's device rather than his own: a blue backround with a star of pale crystal, which could be color coded as silver.
"Shining pale afar" even as Gil's helm does:
"His sword was long, his lance was keen.
His shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven's field
were mirrored in his silver shield."
- The Fall of Gil-galad
To conclude with, Gil-galad seems to be using the blues and silvers of the Nolofinwean side of the family, instead of the whites and golds of the Arafinweans. Why would he do this, if he was Orodreth's child? I do realise that Tolkien's last word was that he was the son of Orodreth, son of Angrod, but... nothing else indicates this, from what i have read.

Think You Can Warm Me Up
[Elves and Cockwarming x reader]
Tumblr media
Request: What elves do you think would like cock-warming? - anon
A/N: This was a lot of elves to think for since I've added more over the months gone by. Enjoy!!!
Warning: smut, cockwarming
More: Brat Taming

Loves it – sometimes when they’re too busy to have sex with you but you want to feel them, they’ll suggest you sit on their lap, only to feel them raising your body slightly to slide themselves into you. When you lift your hips to move, their hands will be planted firmly on your waist with a stern look on their faces warning you to stay still. They’ll keep their hands on your waist, using it to pull you closer to rest against their chest and hold you down. Some use it for punishment when your bratty side comes out. They’ll rile you up by making out with you, having you grind on them feeling as though you two are about to have sex, but then when you’re about to ride them, they’ll lean in to whisper, “Not so fast love, no moving, sit right there and stay still or I’ll leave you empty. You thought I’d just give in and give you what you wanted, my poor confused little one” Other times, they’d use it to literally warm themselves up. When you two are relaxing as such, they’d throw the suggestion out to you and once you agree, the two of you will just be lounging about with their cock buried in you, staying warm. There are times you’ve fallen asleep with them buried in you. “You feel so warm and tight love, stop shifting so much, just stay still. This feels good, now we can cuddle.”

Hates it – the first time you suggest the act, they were down to try it, but once you sank your warm hole onto their cock, it was over for them. Their hands would immediately shoot out to grab your waist, urging you to move but you’ll simply push it away and lean into their chest informing them that you’re not supposed to move. “It’s called cockwarming for a reason. Now stay still. Don’t get mad, remember you agreed to this, so sit and enjoy it.” This was absolute torture for them, they couldn’t take it anymore. Knowing that if they moved their hips right then, you’d probably hop off and that wasn’t part of their plan. Waiting till you were settled in and comfortable, with ease, their hands would sneak around your waist holding you firmly to their chest and without any warning, begin thrusting into you. You’d admit that this was not how you planned the session to go but with the way the tip of their cock was brushing against your soft spot, your moans gave it away. Now whenever you suggest it to them, they’d smile at you saying that they’ll behave, only to abuse your heat as soon as you sink down on their cock. The longest they’ve ever lasted was five seconds. “If you really thought I’d sit through all that torture, you’re absolutely wrong. Now be a good girl/boy and enjoy my cock.”

Mixed feelings – one minute it’s torture for them the other it’s blissful. It just all depends on their mood not so much yours. If they’re tired and just want to be warmed or you want to feel them, they’d let you go ahead without interrupting you. They’d simply wrap their arms around you and pull you in closer, pressing a kiss to your forehead and drifting off to sleep. Other times it’s when they’re busy doing paperwork and could do with a little relief. Letting you sit on their lap with the table hiding their cock buried deep in your heat, they’d let you lean into them so they could continue their work. “This feels good, didn’t think I’d be needing this, but after I’m finished here, I’d bend you over this table for a good fuck, hmm.” When you’re teasing them all day and acting up and then decide it’s time to kick it up a notch by making them feel you were about to ride them after your tedious torture only to sit still on their cock, now you’re just asking for it. They’d be grinding their teeth the entire time when you tell them not to move while pretending to do something important, informing them that when you’re finished then you two can go at it, they’re not going to listen, not when you were suffocating their cock. They wouldn’t care at that point, so say goodbye to whatever it was that you were doing. “Don’t you think this is a little too much love, don’t you think this has gone on for too long because I think so as well. How about we change that by having me fuck you, now.”

Poor Finwe has dramatic kids
Fingolfin, gently nudging Feanor aside with his foot: Brother, move out of the way so I don’t trip on you. Feanor, his eyes enormous: You kick Feanor? You kick his body like a football? Oh! Oh! Jail for Fingolfin! Jail for Fingolfin for one thousand years!
Finwe, quietly: Not again...

I think a godtier dynamic for early stage Beleriand is like...
Fingolfin: In the absence of Finarfin, I will be like a father to Finrod in every way
Maedhros: I know what it's like to suddenly be responsible for your entire household in the absence of your parents, and Finrod is too young to have to go through that alone. I will help him as much as I can
Thingol: I don't particularly trust the Noldor, but my baby brother's baby's baby is my baby and I am going to take him under my wing immediately
Meanwhile Finrod is a certified adult who doesn't really need anyone's help and is honestly having a good time in Beleriand, but people do seem to enjoy looking after him, so for their sake more than his own he's happy to 🥰 at them whenever they unnecessarily baby him, so it takes like a century for any of them to realize Finrod is not their poor little meow meow and is as competent as any of them

AO3 gen, no warnings. Maedhros discusses his abdication.
“What do you suppose my name should be?” Maedhros says, facedown. His back is still red and raw and hot under Maglor’s hands, cooling where the salve is rubbed into his skin. He hisses between his teeth when Maglor reaches his upper back, rubbing into the muscles around where his shoulder separated.
“Nelyo,” Maglor says, on the verge of exasperation.
“You know Nelui lacks dignity. Imagine Grandfather’s despair if I were to go by Nelui! I shudder at the thought.” Maedhros fake shudders, which ends in a bitten-off groan. Maglor tuts, and keeps rubbing Maedhros’ back, though with a lighter hand.
“Why this preoccupation with names? Two weeks ago, you could hardly recall your own,” Maglor says, uncertain. Maedhros’ grief is difficult to discern from his humour, and often they come twined together like fine yarn.
“I wonder if Ñolofinwë will keep the title,” Maedhros answers.
“What would that be?” Maglor hums. “Fingolfin? Finwë Ñolofinwë? Though he does not bear any right to that anymore, now that he has joined the host of the fleeing Noldor. And besides, the sound of Fingolfin is—” Maglor makes a face.
Maedhros turns his head to look at Maglor. His eyes are bright and clear and certain.
“Do you suppose Finelfin is any better?”
Maglor makes the same face.
“It is a burden to be borne,” he says, in that silly, affected way when he performs among well-mannered Eldar.
“Makalaurë,” Maedhros intones. Maglor ceases his ministrations and becomes that brother that Maedhros loves so well.
“I do not mean to take up Finelfin as my title. I know— Nelyafinwë is my birthright—"
Maglor interrupts with a sharp ai! on the inhale, breathy and quiet. Maedhros lifts his finger, and Maglor is silent.
“I bear Finwë’s lineage, though little good it does me in Beleriand, with Ñolofinwë’s people and ours on the verge of bloodshed. Nor would it be fit for the High King to be pulled from his people the way I must be. We did not come to Beleriand to rule, only to reclaim. We burned the boats, Káno, and a third of Ñolofinwë’s host was lost to the Helcaraxë.”
“You did not burn—”
“I stood aside only. I took no action against you. Would they see it any differently?”
“Would you not be a king renowned? Fëanor would have been a poor king, but you have a mind for it, and a care and talent. Do you not desire it?”
“I do,” says Maedhros, and his voice breaks. He pauses, pressing his hand to his eyes. “But any king with sense would see that he cannot rule a people so divided when he caused the division.”
Maglor begins to weep, then, great tears landing on Maedhros’ cheeks. “Do you still despair? Do you have so little faith in yourself?”
“I have hope,” says Maedhros simply. “Findekáno’s rescue has already begun to repair the wound between our kin. If I abdicate, and pass the crown to Fingolfin, we may yet build a power strong enough to repel Morgoth. We may yet look upon the Silmarils.”
Maglor searches Maedhros’ face with his dark eyes and relents, wiping his eyes with his sleeves, straightening. If his brother is of sound enough mind to work abdication to his advantage, then there must be merit to his words.
“If you choose to abdicate, you cannot use your father-name, and neither can the rest of us, though I expect Curvo will do it in spite of you.”
“Perhaps that is for the best,” Maedhros says with a wicked glint in his eye. “Findekáno is choosing Fingon as his Sindarin name, and Kanafinwë would follow the same pattern into Sindarin. You are a preening bird with all your vanity, and I do not think your pride could withstand sharing a name. Not to mention how confusing the histories would be! Would you be Fingon I or would Findekáno? Perhaps Mingonfin and Tadgonfin? It all seems rather—”
Maedhros yelps as Maglor grasps a modest handful of Maedhros’ hair and tugs.

Day 2: Maglor of @feanorianweek
Kingship
Tumblr media
Poppy = Sloth | Manipulation
I do think Maglor mourned when Maedhros got himself captured, I just also read Maglor as a manipulative power hungry character.
He probably convinced himself that Maedhros had died and ignored everything that proved otherwise, both as a poor coping mechanism and, subconsciously, seizing the power of being a king, although he never named himself one as that would give him trouble. He differently enjoyed the power and mourned, when Maedhros came back, for the power loss. He was happy to have his brother back of course. I don´t think he spoke against Maedhros choice to give the kingship to Fingolfin, even if he wanted it himself, as he did except Fingolfin to do something stupid and get himself killed eventually, and by agreeing he seemed more "civil" and the friendliest of his brothers, which would end up giving him political power, giving people the illusion that he´s the innocent and harmless of his family.

Rating Silm deaths
Miriel: 9/10 - Not a fun way to die but at least the child she died giving birth to was a special snowflake and not an average joe.
Finwe: 3/10 - Pretty lame if you ask me but gets points for trying to be a good dad.
Feanor: 11/10 - Spontaneously combusting sure sounds interesting. Athough it was stupid, I admire his bravery for fighting all those balrogs alone.
Elenwe: 6/10 - Poor thing. She was so brave going to middle earth with a bunch of crazy Noldor. The fanart of her death looks awesome though.
Argon: 7.5/10 - It’s said he killed an Orc Captain in the battle he was slain which seems pretty badass.
Fingolfin: 10/10 - Actually accomplished something by dying. Gets full points for his heroic sacrifice.
Angrod & Aegnor: 5/10 - I’m sorry my sweet summer children. You deserved so much better. Your deaths were unfortunately little more than footnotes though.
Aredhel: 7/10 - Took a Javelin to the shoulder to protect her son but I don’t see why she couldn’t have pulled both herself and her son out of the way.
Fingon: 8/10 - I cried like a b*tch when he died. His death sounded so painful, being held by a whip while being slaughtered by Gothmog.
Turgon: 2/10 - He got played like a fiddle by Maeglin.
Maeglin: 1/10 - Pfft. Lame. Imagine getting defeated and thrown off a wall by human with less than half your experience.
Glorfindel: 4/10 - Sorry dude. Your death wasn’t that cool. A million dudes guys died fighting balrogs and you weren’t the first to do it either.
Ecthelion: 15/10 - What a way to go out my guy. Imagine killing the dude who killed badasses like Fingon & Feanor. Wouldn’t have expected it from a happy little musician.
Finrod: 11/10 - Lmho. He went feral. Fighting a werewolf while naked and weaponless is sure something.
Celegorm: 1/10 - Turko, I love you but what a lame way to go out. A little baby half elf who might have been biologically full human completely owned you.
Caranthir & Curufin: ?/10 - We literally get no info on their deaths except that they died in a kinslaying.
Amrod & Amras: ?/10 - Same as Caranthir and Curufin.
Maedhros: 9/10 - I’m definitely not pro-suicide but his death just feels so right. Refusing to let go of the Silmaril despite the pain it’s causing him. A very fiery end for the hottest Feanorian.
Celebrimbor: 8.5/10 - It was brutal but it was far from boring.
Gil-Galad: 8/10 - I’d say it was pretty hot.
