Video game console and case design
Today's hyperfixation is on the PLAYSTATION 5. Because I want one, but I really shouldn't buy one, so I am just looking up everything to do with games consoles and burning my brain out.
I used to be a proper xbox player, until I got my PC, then I never really touched by xbox again. I got a PS4 to play Persona 5 and since then it's been a blu ray player for my Adventure Time boxset, not much else. But the current gen - PS5, Series X - is arguably more powerful than my gaming PC, and I still have a lot of friends stuck on PS5, so I am considering investing in a unit.
Anyway is it me or did they really shit the bed with design in this generation?
Look at these chunky fuckers! They do not fit smoothly under your television at all. There is no detail or decoration breaking up their unnecessarily large faces, which makes them look bland and ugly. They look like they're made of cheap plastic, with the two controllers being the highest quality thing about them. I can attest the xbox controller is unbeatable, but playstation really made their shot this generation. A shame I can never get used to the dualshock joystick positioning.
The Series S and the PS5 Slim are almost NO improvement on the base designs.
For some reason they made the Series S look like a speaker???
The new PS5 slim FINALLY has a line across that massive faceplate, but the half matte half glossed finish is not doing it any favours. I think it would've looked much better if, for example, the matte and gloss plates were different colours. Like black and white! It also has an even MORE out of place disc drive, which I think is part of Sony's agenda to go digital only, and the two tiny "feet" for its horizontal positioning are pathetic! Personally I like this more than the original but not significantly, disappointing since I was really looking forward to it.
I want you to compare these nasties to the previous generation - the PS4 and the XBOX One.
....Now, what's hilarious about this image is the consoles look ALMOST IDENTICAL from this angle. And, I guess, that would be why Sony and Microsoft decided to make such a departure with the space heater PS5 and the fridge Series X.
But they both look very premium and advanced, and they fit very nicely in your living room.
The companies tried to look a bit more distinguished in their followup versions in the previous gen too. The white PS4 Pro looks a lot closer to PS5 with its quirkiness, but without the atrocious shiny plastic. Sony tended to add or remove a layer whenever they altered the PS4, I wonder what they would look like all stacked on top of each other.
It's not just the games console designs that suffer - Look at the game cases! I know that the companies want to incentivise you to go digital, but Xbox Series X cases are just awful.
So if you're confused - You should be!!! Microsoft have two kinds of case for the Series X. One of them is the EXACT SAME CASE as Xbox One, but with Series X printed on the front. The second newer version foregoes the sexy Xbox logo entirely and just has Xbox Series X printed in some default font. Awful awful awful.
Playstation is doing better, but barely.
They are reusing PS4 cases with a different print on them. It doesn't look as horrible as Xbox's, and it at least has a different colour on the logo, but damn, the jump between PS3/360 and PS4/One was really impressive, and now they've stopped bothering because they want everyone to go digital. If your game cases look like shit, why bother with physical?
I want to contrast with physical media kings Nintendo, who did an outstanding job in 2017 with designing the case for the Nintendo Switch.
These bad boys are mine. They're super thin, easy to stack, decent quality, and F U N. The red colour pallette makes them pop out. You can see one from across the store and go, "damn, that's a Nintendo Switch game".
I just want a thousand of them.
I would say a disadvantage, especially compared to the Gamecube games next to them, and even compared to 3ds, is that you can't tell what game you're looking at without going right up to them. These cases are TOO uniform, and really tiny, so i have to triple check I am picking up Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and not Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Meanwhile you can tell exactly what Gamecube games I have by colour pallette alone. Like, you can instantly tell that's Windwaker.
The switch in general is a very fun looking games console, much nicer looking than its predecessor the Wii U, though I'm not sure how I feel about the white of the OLED. But every time I see a Switch Lite in stores, even though I know it's worse than my Switch, I want to buy one. It just looks so FUUUUUN.
And finally a special mention to the 3DS and its games case. The console itself was pretty stylish, if... rudimentary for its release period, but the games cases are high quality and almost make me want to have 3ds games just so I can have the cases.

I like collecting trinkets and am always looking to collect additional trinkets. I thought it would be nice to write down what all I'm looking to obtain someday.

MOTHER 3 Deluxe Box
MSRP: 18,000 yen, or approx. $120
Market price: Enough to be somebody's rent payment

I mean, what a beaut, right? Just look at her. I've longed for this extremely small Game Boy Advance with a minor difference in faceplate since I was a wee babe. (Or a sixth grader, I think.) Anyway, I remember the price on eBay being around $600 back then, and the price has gone up surprisingly not that much given inflation.
Speaking of, here's an interesting note about this item's retail price: the page on STARMEN.NET documenting this box around release put the cost of the item at "around $155." As suggested above, the value of yen in comparison to the value of the dollar has significantly depreciated in the past two decades. Also, accounting for inflation, 18k JPY in 2006 is about 20.2k JPY today... still closer to around $135 USD. Meanwhile $120 in 2006 money has the same buying power as $185 today, while $155 would be worth around $240 today. Depressing, right?
Looking around on Japanese listings, the price is about equivalent to US eBay listings... a small mercy if you ask me. I'm not sure how consoles like these ship overseas anyway, given the battery. Oh well.
Octopath Traveler - Wayfarer's Edition
MSRP: $90
Market price: $180ish with the game, $120ish without--though prices fluctuate pretty heavily
Come on, man. Comes in a little pop-up book. Ridiculous.
The box comes encased in one of those plasticky outer shells that scratch horribly, but it usually means that the box itself is in very good condition when sold secondhand. It's also not super clear in the promotional image, but the map of Orsterra is made of cloth.
Definitely lots of pointless trinkets here. Trinkets that I would just love to display. Hoo-ah!
Octopath Traveler II Steelbook (Switch ver.)
MSRP: That's a good question. I'm under the impression that you could get the Steelbook edition for an additional $10 when purchasing the game from select retailers.
Market price: $25 (game not included)
Prices for the game with the steelbook are ridiculous enough that I would advise just buying a secondhand copy of the game separately. I got my copy from a local game store for $35 and I've seen it for even cheaper online.
For those of you who prefer the Playstation versions, the PS4/PS5 steelbook appears more expensive on resale, but the games themselves are generally cheaper. Your mileage may vary.
In any case, it does pain me to forsake the Collector's Edition of this game, but the price just isn't worth it to me. $200 MSRP is already pretty steep. I would assume the included artbook does not showcase any work that isn't already present in the sold-seperately Octopath II artbook (well, actually, it sounds more like a Champions of the Continent artbook that happens to also have OT2 art in it, but that's besides the point), and the bust standees, while beautifully sculpted, are not my typical style of figure collecting... and they're not even actually metal! The box is indeed very pretty but I have to draw the line somewhere, and that line appears to stand around $300 cardboard. (The US release doesn't even get that damn tote bag...)
In any case, I love steelbooks. They're just too handsome. I've yet to find a fanmade OT1 one that I like, but maybe when that time comes it too will join my oddly-shaped collection.
Persona 3 Portable - Grimoire Edition
MSRP: $70
Market price: Something stupid, probably
I had actually intended on preordering one of these special editions back when they were announced... I just sort of forgot. Oops! Now I am subject to the whims of Limited Run aftermarket prices. Anything for such a pretty steelbook I guess.
I have mixed feelings about the full collector's edition for this game, AKA the "S.E.E.S. Edition." I think the thing I like most about it is the box it all comes in, which is generally a bad sign. I was very excited about the Evoker proplica until I realized it's only half of the gun trapped in the box forever... maybe I should just go hunt down that water gun. Regardless I'm not too torn up about passing that one up. (Well... except for the stupid briefcase box. I don't think it's a top-opener like the Scott Pilgrim CE was though. Which is just a shame!)
I guess I might also go for the "Grimoire Edition" of P4G if my pockets are feeling too heavy, but I'm not as jazzed about that game or its steelbook design. Also, I already ordered the collector's edition of Persona 3 Reload... it's too much, Atlus... it's just too much.
Pokémon Legends Arceus - Steelbook (UK Preorder Bonus)
MSRP: I think some shops charged an extra 5 quid for the steelbook
Market price: $25
PLA got some lovely preorder bonuses across the pond. Alongside this steelbook, depending on your retailer of choice, you could also get a Hisuian Pokéball replica or an Arceus statue (reminiscent of the HGSS preorder bonuses of old). Of course, you could also get the Arceus sitting cutie from the UK Pokemon Center, just like the US one... without the steelbook though? Alright. I do wonder if the UK release had the same supply chain issues for the Arceus plush as the US did. Anyway...
Lamentations about regional differences aside, I adore this steelbook! A lot of love in this artwork. The other Pokémon steelbooks, while cool, are mostly just cover legendaries but metal, or maybe gold... (and, frankly, some very ugly patterns on the inside of the box! Shameful!) It's OK though. PLA has had mercy on my soul.
I also think it would be super cool to get my hands on one of the SuMo/USUM steelbooks someday, if only for the novelty of having a steelbook for a 3DS game. Those resale prices though! Whew! Maybe someday...
Sam & Max Remastered
MSRP: $35 (standard), $75-80 (collector's), $5 (slipcover)
Market price: $50 (standard), $150 (collector's), $15 (slipcover)
These collector's editions are extremely cool historical pieces. Recreations of decades-old merch, wow! It's a shame I've never been able to get these retail price because Limited Run aftermarket is ridiculous. Still, I'd like to get my mitts on these someday.
My goal is to own all three collector's editions and display the three games in the slipcover. (Devil's Playhouse remaster coming soon! Any day now...)
Having the Hit the Road collector's edition would be cool but I'm not as set on it. If I had my way, I would start collecting the different physical releases of HtR/the original Telltale titles too! Restraint, restraint...

Project dump!
Spliced two broken Switches together to make a working one
Bought a very cheap Elite controller. Disgusting. Shattered shell. Broken bumper and left joystick. Cleaned. Replaced everything but the faceplate. Learned how to solder new components to the board. Paid $30 total for a $150 controller.
Dad said his PS5 controller wouldn’t always fire. Turns out one of the springs in the trigger broke in half. Don’t even know how that’s possible. I also noticed he tried painting the PS button so I replaced the spring and cleaned up the paintjob for him.
My friend bought a robot vacuum from the thrift store because he’s low on money right now (Tears of the Kingdom announcement really did a number on his wallet), but was exceedingly bummed to find out it didn’t work and couldn’t return it. So I fixed it up for him.
Didn’t get a picture, but someone on Facebook saw my work and asked me to fix his Xbox in exchange for a handmade rosary and some extras
Updated my Iron Man controller
Worked with a buddy to make this because we couldn’t wait for the official one to be released

Owning a PS5 I can't justify the new console cost really just for what is a Spidey faceplate. So picked up the official controller and headed to Ali Express for a bootleg faceplate which is EVEN better then the official as it comes with a vent. If you haven't nabbed the official controller, recommend you do though!

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Starfield Bundle: Preorder Guide and Release Date Revealed
The gloomy future of extraterrestrial humans is the focus of one of the most eagerly awaited AAA-rated games right now, developed by Bethesda.
In contrast to its competitor, the Sony PS5, which has long offered it, Microsoft is now launching an official Xbox Series X wrap that was made by the company just for the console.
The focus of the initial release would be Starfield, an upcoming Bethesda game that is expected to be one of the biggest Xbox releases of the year and an exclusive for both the platform and PCs.
Since the Xbox Series X is a built-and-solid device, unlike the PlayStation 5 faceplates, this wrap would be velcro-secured rather than a detachable clip-on like what Sony created for the PlayStation.
The Starfield wrap is available in two colors, and the onboard avionics module has a unique style that is directly inspired by the game. The “Starfield” title is shown on the front fascia of a wrap that is grey in color.

PS5 Spider-Man2 Edition 🔥🕸️🕷️
As we all know during San Diego Comic Con last weekend, Sony Playstation dropped the hammer on their newest "Exclusive Edition" for their PlayStation 5.
Not really the news folks like myself wanted to hear,since I am still holding out for a "newly designed slim version" of the system.
But,I was excited about the Spider-Man Edition console,plus the face cover (for those who already have a system) and the controller.
I already pre-ordered the game,plus the statue of Venom,Peter Parker and Miles Morales weeks ago.
Imagine my surprise when I went to the Sony website site at 9:56 am,logged in and immediately was placed into the queue.
Wait a minute.
Y'all have to queue up for gaming systems, games and gaming accessories as well?
Okay, if you are a registered SDCC member or NYCC Fan Verification,you already know the routine.
Start cracking those knuckles and grab your orange juice,toast and/or coffee.
I got in fairly quick,but trying to actually FIND Spider-Man was a bit of a challenge as you keep going to the menu section (several times) ,kept getting sent over to Lebron James "shit" and not Spider-Man.
Finally the category for exclusives,showed Spider-Man,clicked,scrolled,console still in stock, faceplate for disc "sold out",controller available (add to cart) and faceplate for disc version available (add to cart).
I'm still unsure on which PS5, but I would probably pick up the digital one first (Holiday Season in around the corner) if it's on sale.
Slim version is still top priority and especially if this (maybe a rumor) is true.
