In the year 2024, over 390,243 roadside inspections have already taken place, leading to nearly 74,975 instances of out-of-service violations being discovered. As we gear up for International Roadcheck 2024, set to begin in under two months, the number of inspections is anticipated to rise. To minimize your chances of being inspected (and improve your odds of passing if you are chosen), follow these tips.
1. Pre-Trip Inspection: Conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection, checking all essential components such as tires, brakes, lights, coupling devices, and cargo securement to ensure they meet safety requirements.
2. Keep Documentation Handy: Have all necessary documentation readily available, including your commercial driver's license (CDL), medical examiner's certificate, vehicle registration, and any other relevant permits or paperwork.
3. Check Cargo Securement: Confirm that the cargo is properly secured and distributed to prevent shifting during transit. Ensure it complies with weight limits and securement regulations.
4. Monitor Vehicle Condition: Routinely monitor the vehicle's condition during the trip, paying attention to any changes in performance, warning lights, or unusual sounds that may indicate mechanical issues.
5. Review Hours of Service: Maintain accurate records of your driving hours and rest periods to comply with Hours of Service (HOS) regulations. Use electronic logging devices (ELDs) or paper logs as required.
6. Verify Emergency Equipment: Check the functionality and accessibility of emergency equipment, such as fire extinguishers, warning triangles, and first-aid kits, to ensure they are in good condition if needed.
7. Understanding Load Limits: Understand and adhere to weight limits and axle load regulations to avoid violations related to overweight or improperly distributed cargo.
8. Maintain Vehicle Cleanliness: Keep the interior and exterior of the vehicle clean and organized, creating a positive impression during inspections and reflecting a professional approach to safety and hygiene.
9. Follow Traffic Laws: Adhere to all traffic laws, including speed limits, signaling, lane changes, and obeying traffic signs and signals, to maintain safe and compliant operation on the road.
10. Communication with Inspectors: Be courteous, cooperative, and attentive when interacting with inspectors during roadside stops, providing clear and accurate responses to any inquiries.
These tips address key areas that truck drivers should focus on to ensure compliance, safety, and efficiency during roadside inspections. Always consult official regulations and guidelines from relevant transportation authorities for comprehensive and up-to-date information.

What You Need to Know About Suspension and Steering
If you're interested in learning about how to repair your vehicle, you may want to learn more about Suspension and Steering. These parts are essential to a vehicle's safety, and they require regular inspections. A CVSA Roadcheck is a 72-hour inspection blitz for commercial vehicles that targets steering systems and suspensions. While steering components are generally pretty reliable, problems may creep up on them.
Your vehicle's suspension and steering system should be level and free of sway or bounce, especially at low speeds. Your vehicle's suspension should support the weight of the vehicle and keep the car level in most situations. If your vehicle isn't level when you drive, a worn-out component in the steering or suspension may be the cause. It's important to have regular inspections to prevent major problems down the line.
The steering and suspension systems in your vehicle are crucial for handling and cornering. They allow the outer wheels to turn wider than the inner wheels during cornering. The steering linkage of the Conestoga wagon was invented by Rudolf Ackermann in the first decade of the 1800s and remains the foundation for steering today. However, these systems aren't the only components that make up a vehicle's suspension.
In order to properly service your suspension and steering system, you must first understand how these parts work. You need to know the difference between an independent suspension system and an A-arm (double wishbone) system. The suspension and steering system is made up of three major parts. The steering box connects to the steering wheel and the steering linkage attaches to the front wheels. Depending on the vehicle, you may have to replace one or all of them.
The springs in your vehicle's suspension system help keep the car's tires from bouncing too much. Without shock absorbers, your car will bounce around and lose controllability. If your suspension is too stiff, it may not handle bumps as well as you'd like it to, so it's important to replace it. The springs are linked to steering, and you must have them checked for proper alignment.
Steering and suspension systems work together to guide the vehicle. They are directly related and are often referred to as a single system. Modern improvements in these parts of the vehicle have increased safety and comfort. They also help a driver maintain control over the vehicle. You can also check the condition of your steering system by taking a test drive. You may find that the steering system is loose, or a joint is not properly aligned.
The steering and suspension system work together to provide a smooth ride for you and keep you in control of your car. Your steering system helps you steer the car, and the suspension system absorbs road bumps. Combined, these systems help you maintain control of your vehicle. The steering system transfers input from your steering wheel to the steering components, which in turn keeps the vehicle stable. While they are related systems, they are separate and important. Keeping them balanced and operating at their highest capacity will ensure a safe and enjoyable ride.
The early suspension systems in cars and trucks were primarily mechanical and did not have designed movement. Most used leaf springs or coil springs and had limited travel. As speed increased, so did the need for better ride quality. The Christie suspension system introduced a mechanism that utilized coil springs within the armored hull. The Christie system was directly descended from this design. However, in modern vehicles, the suspensions are often made of flexible components.
Suspension and steering are important parts for safety. Tire air pressure, springs, and shock absorbers keep the wheels in contact with the road. The system also isolates the driver and passengers from road noise and bumps. A suspension system is an important part of any vehicle. The system is also essential to improving ride quality. For your safety, it is important to have a high quality suspension and steering system.
