She Had the Makings of a Queen: Chapter Two
Tumblr media
Chapter Two: Backbone READ NOW
Preview
Mindfully, FP avoided looking into the safe too closely, rather letting himself feel for the old wooden chest that sat at the back. Pulling it out, FP smiled to himself as he inspected the box. He had carved it himself after being put into detention after being caught making out with Stacey Mallen behind the bleachers in his freshman year at Riverdale High. It hadn’t been his finest moment. But the shop teacher had taken pity on him and taught him the basics of woodworking. Mr. Reynolds – if he remembered correctly – had laughed when FP told him what happened and insisted that he might as well learn something useful in his time. It hadn’t taken long, and by the first week, FP and he would meet regularly after school, and Reynolds would donate his time to teaching a young FP the skills of the trade. The little carved box was the first thing FP had been taught, it was rudimentary with rough edges, the thickness of the lid was slightly uneven, the hinges had been misaligned, and there was a crack that ran the length of the box from a knot in the wood FP hadn’t factored in. It was small and insignificant in comparison to the larger pieces they had eventually made, but it was his favourite thing, the first thing he had made with his hands that served an actual purpose.
Setting it down on the table, FP fingered the small latch and delicately opened the box. The perfume of old wood and sawdust still clung heavily to it as its scent permeated his nostrils. Taking strength from those memories, he dumped the contents of the box out without looking.
Plastic and metal poker chips bounced on the table. All the same colour, but various shades.
Red.
Some of them were more worn than others. The dates and engravings on them worn away by angry hands, others were cracked and haphazardly glued together by a teenager’s futile attempt to repair his life.
Picking one at random FP twirled the chip on its head, watching it dance across the table only to fall off the edge and clatter on the floor. “I kept them all. Well except for-,” he gestured vaguely to her person, the implicit “except for the one around your neck” was understood without needing to be said.

Thinking back on it I still can't believe the movie animated SMQ's death in the most dramatic way possible. Oh no, he didn't just die in a car crash, he was walking in the middle of a typhoon and a tree fell onto a car which crashed into him...

Thranduil’s (non-existant) Queen
I strongly headcannon that the silvans were very free in their gender and sexual identities. The basic norm was that everyone is bisexual until proven otherwise, and even then it’s quickly accepted. Furthermore, due to the nature of elven lives (aka being immortal) being polyamorous is rather common, as is sleeping around with no romantic relationship.
(The valar can’t tell them what to do!)
That being said, cheating is still a gigantic no no for them, as is abandoning one partner for another, especially if there is little to no warning or reason.
Anyway, slightly crazy idea, but what if Thranduil was not, in fact, married, and simply had and has a bunch of one night stand/regular bed partners and one day ended up pregnant (read my user name) and that’s how Legolas came about.
Thing is, legolas looks so much like Thranduil that no one knows who the other parent is, and Thranduil roles with it bc hey, at least no custody issues.
Elves outside of greenwood: so what happened to your mom?
Legolas: uuuuhhhhhhhh
Que elaborate tragic story that becomes worse and worse the more legolas retels it.
You can bet your ass legolas has fun with it. His friends pitch in and all of a sudden no one knows what happened to the queen of greenwood (they do not call it mirkwood) except that it’s bad.
Thranduil has no idea that this is going on until elrond brings it up one day.
Elrond: i have not said it before, but my condolences for the loss of your wife. I understand it was quite horrific.
Legolas: *sweating*
Thranduil: *slowly turning towards his son* yes, i miss her dearly *you-are-so-grounded glare at legolas*
And:
Elladan and elrohir: how did you deal with the loss of your mother
Legolas: *hnnnnnnnnnn, i am not qualified for this but i can’t tell THEM that* .... killing orcs has worked for me so far.
Later:
Thranduil: *bursts in the door* LEGOLAS-
Legolas: I PANICKED, OK? LEAVE ME ALONE!
And:
Thranduil, as he goes to check on the mountain and humans after the dragon (book canon): Legolas, this is the 6th time i’ve told you to not be so-
Bard: *wet, grimmy, tired* *walks past as if in slow mo and like a supper model*
Thranduil: -Rrrreeeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh
Thranduil: *stares*
Legolas: Ada, No.

I can't sleep so I thought I'd say about the au I discovered in my brain:
Hst is captain of blue rain, he has to go to the emergency room for whatever reason; the nurse walks in, and it ywz who dropped out of the blue rain training camp. Hst is like YWZ!!!
Other things:
Ywz is unimpressed and hst has to chase him out into the hall. Zx is like 'captain?' as hst goes rushing off half dressed after ywz. Ywz has to escort him back and gets zx into the room and is like 'make sure he doesn't leave'. Hst all through is trying to apologise for the name calling in the training camp.
Ywz explains that he decided to leave the training camp for other reasons completely unrelated to hst. But he is glad of the apology. Apologies. So many apologies.
When the Dr comes they are surprised to find Ywz there and hst works out ywz is way too important to just be getting details from a random patient. 'he runs the emergency room doesn't he? He's so competent and efficient'. Ywz does not, but he's well on his way.
Ywz and zx get coffee and renew their friendship.
Hst is very extra happy that he knows where ywz works and can send a thank-you gift. He sends flowrs, ywz sends a note back explaining he's alergic to those ones, and thus starts the short notes epistolary. Hst sends a gift, 'dear nurse Yu, this time I'm sure I've found something perfect for you' /'dear captain Huang, this is hilarious, but no'.
Hst tries to send ywz the cup when blue rain win the championship. Zx has to come collect it. Ywz asks if hst is in trouble and zx is like 'he just won the cup. He walks of water, according to our managers'. Ywz asks if zx has time for coffee and zx just like 'we won a championship. I can p much do what I want for a few days'.
Ywz's colleague in pediatrics is complaining cus one of her teenagers is obsessed with yx/oal, but ee won't let them request a visit, so ywz asks hst. Hst is like 'no, I won't ask yx. Anyone else, but I won't ask espec if he's already said no'. So they ask smc instead, and hst and smc visit and play games with the teenagers.
Smc doesn't mind hospitals, she says yx dealt with much more of it than she did, when smq died. Also ppl have different experiences so.
Smc brings dancing rain badges, hst akss her for one and pins it to his jacket, and then he sees ywz and has pockets full of rip off dancing rain badges to gift to ywz and smc is like 'omg worst fan' and tries to confiscate his official badge.
Hst and zx are the cap/vice cap team who low key both wish they weren't. Hst enjoys playing games with teenagers just for sheer fun, so he and zx keep doing that.
Ywz recognised hst name that first time and was curious, he didn't expect to get wooed via many gifts and short notes, he doesn't know what to do with himself.
Someone asks hst about his influences one time and hst says wc and the usual but also says 'as they all know' blue rain ethos comes from someone in the training camp. And ywz hears it and goes to find old interviews and sure enough hst always says some variation of that, cus ywz quit after he beat wc.
Oh! When hst was staying overnight for whatever thing, he kept telling all colleagues abt ywz genius gamer and they all have videos and clips and ywz is like "pleas stop. It's not a secret but please stop it" so hst does. One of ywz colleagues reports to ywz that now hst is going around telling everyone how clever and kind and awesome and impressive and competent ywz was when he was a teenager. She's like 'is this better?' and ywz is like 'no. No it is not' and goes to tell hst off again.
There was more things I've been lying here trying to sleep for AGES but I can't remember them right now. I know nothing abt emergency rooms of nursing. Oh,
One time hst is there bringing ywz a gift ('you keep sending my thank you gifts back with such polite little notes. if I bring it in person it will be harder for you to return it') and a big emergency happens and hst is like 'can I... Help? Or get out the way', and ywz looks around and points him over to the kids waiting for news and hst spends the evening distracting them.
Afterwards they are outside and ywz is smoking (for the aesthetic. He can smoke once in a while when he is stressed) and hst is like 'I can't know can I? The outcome. Confidentiality and all' and ywz is like 'correct' and hst is like 'I had a whole thing planned. About it not mattering, being in your hands, it was a good speech. But it does matter, right?' and ywz is like 'yeah' and they just stand there until hst taxi arrives. Then ywz is like 'captain Huang? This isn't my favourite either' and remembers to return the gift and hst like 'damn you so focussed' and is really impressed.
Anyway ywz is very competent and great nurse and they fall in love slowly and there's some pining and zx takes ywz to dinner to make sure that ywz is okay forgiving hst for the names and it's all very wholesome. And ywz wears crocs. That is key. Hst can buy those little crocs decorations you can get.

Best Lost Boy -> Results
Tumblr media
Quite frankly, I was kinda an asshole this round because I knew who I wanted to win, and I was adamant he deserved it. I mean... he's my own guy, and one of the Pandom's most iconic characters, not to mention iconic Lost Boys. No, he isn't likeable, nor is he fun, but he's My Special Guy and I Needed Him to Win, so, I was kinda a jerk here. Sorry Tabs, you're a sweet kid, who definitely deserves a similar award. But I am VERY glad [P]OB won, I mean... was there way he couldn't have? We won't be seeing the last of him and I'm very proud of my guy.
Congrats, Old Boy, and to @thecringefailintherye/@autisticslightlyposting/Me! (i only show bias on those blogs and in the results pages.)

(taking TKA prompts!)
"I don't get it, what's so fun?" Zhang Jiale said, slumping against his arm as he watched the game over his friend's shoulder. "Just some back-and-forth hitting and killing, so what?"
"Aw, it's the satisfaction of crushing noobs! See, look at this guy and his clown equipment. He won't know what hit him." His friend grinned, jabbing a finger at the opponent he'd just been matched up with. The symbols and numbers onscreen meant nothing to Zhang Jiale, but he shrugged and watched on as the battle began.
"Crushing noobs" indeed, except, unfortunately for Zhang Jiale's friend, the roles had been reversed. As Zhang Jiale watched, the screen unfolded in a kaleidoscope of light and color—madness, yes, but if he peered closely he could just glimpse the method...
He hadn't even realized he'd been leaning forward, almost falling off his chair. "Hey," said Zhang Jiale, ignoring his friend's spluttering as DEFEAT flashed across the screen. "You said that was a Spitfire?"
...
"You play around too much," Ye Xiu said, thoroughly unimpressed.
"Yeah, alright, I'm never trying that again," Su Muqiu said, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "I'm gonna be seeing colors for days..."

So I was half joking the other day when I mentioned the possibility of writing a post about the distinctions between "Roguelike" and "Roguelite" but I actually want to write that post so here goes. Rather than providing a definitive answer for what the difference is, it seems more practical to discuss the common opinions and usages you're likely to encounter. Like all debates about definitions, rather saying one way is correct, I think it's more important to recognize what someone else might mean so you can understand what they're trying to communicate. In this essay I will
discuss 4 general perspectives I've noticed regarding the distinction between these two genres.
1. Trying to use The Berlin Interpretation The Berlin Interpretation refers to a set of factors that a group of players and developers (who, according to Wikipedia and its sources were "at the International Roguelike Development Conference 2008 held in Berlin, Germany") decided were related to a game being a roguelike, which would be useful for say, explaining the difference between Diablo and Angband (or if you don't want to just point and go "they're obviously different", the difference between Rogue and Super Mario World). These factors were based on "five canon roguelike games: ADOM, Angband, Linley's Dungeon Crawl, NetHack, and Rogue" (Wikipedia: Roguelike Key Features). At this point I'd refer to those five as "true roguelikes" while the actual term "roguelike" is somewhat more loose these days.
As far as I know there was no attempt at this time to differentiate between "roguelike" and "roguelite". This is possibly because Rogue Legacy, which probably is what popularized the term "roguelite" (and maybe Cellar Door Games even coined the term?), wouldn't be released until 2013. However, some use "roguelite" as a way to say a game isn't quite "roguelike" but shares enough qualities to at least be in the same conversation as them, and may be using the Berlin Interpretation in some way to determine that.
While the above wikipedia link has all the factors and describes them, for a shortened list of the important factors, roguelikes: -Have random dungeon generation -Have Permadeath -Are Turn-based -Are Non-modal (you can do any of your actions at any time if you have the resource for it) -Are Complex -Have resource management (eg food, healing items, identify scrolls, keys, bombs) -Focus on fighting monsters -Require exploration (including not only the map but also what unidentified items do)
The factors that I've noticed are most commonly used as a reason for something being a roguelite while still falling in the rogueli_e umbrella are a weakening of Permadeath by allowing players to keep some sort of permanent progress even through death (referred to as "meta-progress"), or a weakening of complexity because a game is just kinda casual (eg SNKRX, Luck Be a Landlord). Other factors like being turn-based and non-modal tend to be more used in the split between "true roguelike" and "roguelike". How much the rules can be weakened and which ones are most important is, of course, very subjective, but if something is being called a rogueli_e, you can still expect some sort of "run-based gameplay" either way. (I think I got the term "run-based gameplay" from a Youtube video about Roguelike Design I watched once (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM588ci-sMQ))
2. It's Meta-Progress, Of Course This is a very common view in my experience. While you could describe this as the view that I just described above, but focused only on the Permadeath aspect, I've noticed people who take a hardline stance that Meta Progress is What Matters also tend not to like The Berlin Interpretation at all. To be fair, in any discussion of the genres The Berlin Interpretation is a bit of an elephant in the room and they're probably tired of hearing about it. This stance's popularity probably comes from it being less subjective than others, however it's still subjective, since there are different types of meta progress and some will argue that only some types count. The major types of meta progress you can find are:
Direct stat upgrades: You simply start each run stronger because of your previous progress. It definitely makes the game easier if you have more and is basically always agreed that these belong in roguelites but not roguelikes if people are discussing differences. This form of progress is prominent, for example, as upgrades in Rogue Legacy or Hades.
Character unlocks: Just getting different characters/ships/loadouts to start your runs with. It's generally agreed these can be in roguelikes, even if there are definitely better and worse characters, because the point of the unlock is a different way to play rather than clearly making things easier. For example, Unlocking ships in FTL: Faster than Light or squads in Into the Breach.
Unlocking the possibility for new things to be found in runs: A definite gray area. Diluting the item pool can make specific strategies harder even if the new items are generally good. For example, unlocking items in The Binding of Isaac or unlocking cards/relics in Slay the Spire.
Unlocking new difficulties: Doesn't seem to get brought up as meta progress, although it kinda is because it's a permanent unlock that's persistent between runs. For example, Slay the Spire's "Ascensions" or One Step From Eden's "Hell Modes".
And then there's stuff like unlocking shortcuts in Spelunky that allow starting a run farther into the game than the start. It's definitely meta progress but doesn't fit cleanly into one of the above categories. I also feel like even if you have the shortcuts unlocked the expected way to play is still starting from the beginning. The shortcuts are useful for practice, but you often want items/gold from the early areas anyway. So... it's a bit of a weird case and I haven't had much opportunity to get a feel for what most people think about it.
3. What difference? Sometimes, especially when referring to multiple games at once, one term or the other will get used as an umbrella term. Or due to differing perspectives both terms will get used for a single game even if everyone talking about the game individually believes there's some difference. Or for marketing purposes both tags will be put on something. While this doesn't seem to me to be a position that people tend to explicitly hold if questioned about the difference between words, it's also true that in my Steam library currently there are 70 games if I filter to "Roguelike", 66 games if I filter to "Roguelite", and 60 games if I filter to both. I feel as if I don't have to say a whole lot more there. For the curious, though, here are the games in my library that only landed in one category according to Steam:
Roguelike Only
Touhou Library Survivors - A couple updates ago they added meta progress so this is probably on its way to having both tags. I'm not actually sure what determines the tags the library filtering considers but I think it's what's commonly submitted by users?
Sundered: Eldritch Edition - Huh? It's a Metroidvania where dying always returns you to the same save point, where you also spend your experience to level up. I sort of get how this is a roguelite, but this doesn't make sense here.
Trillion: God of Destruction - Never played this, but I thought this was a strategy RPG?
Chasm - I wouldn't put this in either category, personally. It's a Metroidvania where the world is generated at the start of the game. You can turn on permadeath I think, but it doesn't feel like the default way to play the game.
Ghost 1.0 - Huh? It's a Metroidvania that doesn't really fit in here at all.
Dungeons of Dredmor - Makes sense, even if you can turn off the permadeath. It's actually one of the closest to a "true roguelike" I have on Steam. Indeed, it's one of the two games I have tagged "Traditional Roguelike" (the other is Desktop Dungeons, although if Desktop Dungeons counts then I'm a little surprised Crown Trick isn't there).
Hammerwatch - More of an Arcade game, but I thought you could save your game and retry from saves and stuff? I don't think this fits in either tag, but I could be wrong. I played for 14 hours back in 2014 and am relying on memory.
Don't Starve - Makes sense to me, although at a bit slower pace than many games within the genre. Well, maybe it's a bit faster once you know what you're doing, especially if you're looking to progress through the worlds in the story mode.
LUFTRAUSERS - I know nothing about this game, maybe got it in a pack?
Receiver - I know nothing about this game, maybe got it in a pack?
Roguelite Only
SNKRX - Yeah, I mentioned this above. It's how I felt about the game even before checking the tags. You could also consider unlocking extra difficulties to be meta progress, especially since playing on harder difficulties lets you make a longer snake, which has advantages, but I don't think you have to think this has meta progress for this to be a roguelite.
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 - I feel like the fact that none of the terrain is randomly generated and there being a level select screen rather than starting each run at some sort of beginning is a bit weird here. I guess there is that roguelite DLC but it still uses premade maps and honestly the moment to moment co-op action is still most important. If someone said they liked roguelites it wouldn't occur to me to mention this.
Tallowmere 2: Curse of the Kittens - Well, it's clearly a rogueli_e, but I don't remember anything that would clearly push it into roguelite only for me.
Metal Unit - Yeah, fair enough. I think you could stash equipment for future runs or something.
Catacomb Kids - I think this fits somewhere in the rogueli_e categorization but my experience is that I played for 14 minutes in 2015. I vaguely recall something in the controls feeling awkward.
Don't Starve Together - I think I read something about being able to turn off permadeath for a more chill hanging out with friends in a survival game sort of experience, so fair enough. I've never played this so I could be wrong.
So, as we can see. People are very confused, including me.
4. One person I saw on a forum that was just wrong Once I saw someone claim something couldn't be a roguelike because it was turn-based. While there is no one correct answer there are certainly wrong answers. You can disagree that The Berlin Interpretation is the best way to determine if something is a roguelike, but outright stating the opposite of one of the factors just isn't right. They literally describe Rogue. However, it is interesting to consider how far the genre as a whole has come. I feel like The Binding of Isaac, Spelunky, Rogue Legacy, and Slay the Spire were all highly influential, but will not be elaborating at this time on why I feel that way.
In conclusion, words are dumb and whether hotdogs with buns are sandwiches depends on whether we're within 100 yards of Goodburger home of the Goodburger, which incidentally is the determining factor for whether "dude" is gender neutral as well.

I forgot to talk about my LA vs novel impressions.
I love the LA a lot. Mostly because it's the first adaptation I've consumed. I love the casts and the way it went deeper on the characters. I honestly don't think that I'll get attached to QYF if I met him in the novel first. And the little backstory about YQ and his grandpa, I was crying non stop when I watched it.
Also, i really like the backgrounds. Bright and colorful. The best.
Now that I've read the novel though, there are some things on my mind.
First and foremost, Chen Guo. Watching the LA, I really thought that she's a noob and kinda incompetent too. Like, unknowingly accepted the timed challenge, submitted the wrong line up? That's too much. The LA really did her dirty.
But in terms of background characters, I think the ones in LA felt milder? Like, when YQ got kicked from EE, IMO it was much worse in the novel. Also how Tiny Herb treat QYF in LA felt nicer to me.
Next the Challenger League. So many things were changed, but I can't say that I don't like it. I mean, we got more interactions between Happy and the pro players, so... Not to mention YWZ and HST got to meet their former captain again.
Lastly, the Blue River Spy Adventure™. I have no complain, I actually love how the LA translated the situation. It might not be possible to fully cover the spy-turned-to-babysitter part, so let's just make him physically spy Happy instead! And don't forget to make him teach CG whatever needed to be a guild leader. It's nice.
I actually have finished the donghua movie (cried so hard everytime SMQ shows up after his death) and the all-star OVA, but maybe I'll start the main donghua later.
