Hearing about Volition's abrupt shuttering has left me in a weird empty, mourning mood tonight.

When I first started playing Saints Row: The Third almost exactly ten years ago, little would I know how much it'd end up changing my life. I found my best friends through Saints Row's Tumblr community, friends I keep up with daily even though all of us have since moved on to different fandoms. I got to know many other amazing people in the community, through all the shared art and headcanons and roleplays. And I got deeply invested in the creation and development of my OCs, these silly and badass and tragic imaginary people who shared my headspace almost every waking moment of my life for several years.

All this I got from a game series its studio had clearly poured their hearts and souls into, even through all the constant corporate meddling in the development processes over what must have been the last fifteen years, and now finally, a sudden death knell. Volition the studio is no more, its staff laid off without warning or fanfare. And it's just so unfair to everyone who'd worked on the games, and I hate that it's yet more proof (as if we didn't have enough already) that the current system of giant game publisher oligopolies gobbling up everyone they can get their hands on and then taking them behind the shed to be shot when they don't immediately return a double of their investment just shouldn't. fucking. exist.

It sucks. I don't have much more to say except that I hope the now ex-Volition game developers all end up finding new and maybe even better employers soon. And just maybe there'll be some new studio rising from the core of the Volition creative team. We'll see.

Yeah. Making the whole RA9/Cyberlife treachery explanation just: "it's all Kronika's design to reach her so-called golden balance, but androids over time have created their own folklore of what RA9 may be." was actually a way more interesting idea than the canon explanation of "RA9 is the player".

The Boss in the Saints Row series on the best of days, which don't come too often. Complete and total disregard for authority? Check. Walking Disaster Area? Uh-huh. Cold, selfish, brutal and a total Jerkass? Yep. Causes tons of wanton destruction in their activities? Mm-hmm. Goes on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge? Bingo. Cusses a lot? You got it. One-Man Army who knows no concept of mercy? Totally. A wanted criminal? You don't even know... However, on occasion they can connect with a few of their friends, most notably their number two Johnny Gat.

Yuri Lowell:

Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia. A nicer guy than some of the examples on this page, but also a cynical, sarcastic Vigilante Man, and a clear departure from the Idiot Hero common in Tales games. He's strongly opposed to the corruption of the empire he lives in and especially the way particularly powerful and evil figures within it use their position to avoid justice. Ultimately, he decides to start "dispensing his own justice" by killing them outright, leading to a major clash of ideals with his best friend, Internal Reformist Flynn.

My guy, you literally beat the shit out of people with a dildo and had a street gang fight off an alien invasion in the previous games. I love SR but this series was never a triple AAA masterpiece. Suddenly people are writing think pieces about it like it’s The Last of Us.

People lost their shit when they saw a woman, a black one at that, as the poster face and immediately stamped the game as shit, and there was nothing that was going to change that.

Add in Eli, a nerdy non-gangbanger, saying one liberal line and suddenly the game is pushing a leftist agenda.

That’s honestly the reality.

The game isn’t perfect, but I had it before the day one patch even dropped and it’s been far from broken. The gameplay is fun, the story is good and the most serious we’ve had since two and the new characters grow on you. It’s definitely a Saints Row game through and through, and it feels most like the third one in many aspects.

I went into this with really low expectations, because I hated the last game and didn’t want anything like it, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s FUN and that’s why I game.

Replaying Saints Row (2022) from the start and I honestly missed these two. Still love how my boss turned out (thank god I can save the character details) and I just love him with Kevin too much.
