In 1992, a teenager from Singapore named Sandi Tan, along with her friends Sophia Siddique Harvey and Jasmine Ng, set out to make Singapore’s first indie road film. The film was supposed to follow a girl named “S” as she ventures to find five people, she likes enough to take to the afterlife with her. It would be titled Shirkers and it would have been glorious. With the help of their enigmatic mentor, George Cardona, the girls shot their film. But once filming had wrapped, George dropped off the face of the earth, taking any shred of Shirkers with him. Just like that, the dreams of three young girls had evaporated into thin air just like George, and the story of Shirkers would come to an end. Until twenty years later, when Sandi Tan received a package at her doorstep containing the film canisters from all those years ago, in pristine condition.

Shirkers is more than a documentary, it’s a visual journey into the bizarre experience Sandi Tan and her friends shared. Why did George Cardona run off with the footage? Why did he consistently lie about the progress of the film? Why is his past so veiled in mystery? The film does not answer these questions; nothing ever will because the answers don’t matter. While having a concrete answer of what would compel a grown man to play make-believe in such an unwavering fashion would be satisfying, it’s not the point. The point is that this Tommy Wiseau wannabe robbed these girls of what could have been a major achievement for not only them but Singapore’s film industry too. And it wasn’t until his death, 20 years later, that Sandi and her friends could receive some shred of closure.

i like making aliens for scifi settings, so:

1. a mechanized suit uses a heat cutter to destroy withered heat-sensitive plants in an underwater planet. using pits to locate potential heat vents, a greater red moray mother and her translucent children watch expectedly, confused that there are none of their food sources around to feed on.

2. a “shirker” “sky fuck” or “shitbird” screeches loudly, calling to mate from its nest it created atop a research base. hovering ships above are greatly annoyed as their mating call is not only horrendous-sounding and dangerous to the human ear but a frequency that can jam certain systems. 

3. a vent lizard is caught by a pilot. consisting of only cartilage and no bones, the vent lizard is a “common station pest” that has specially evolved to feed off of garbage chutes and just about anything that can be fit into a pipe. they are usually benign, but complaints such as “the goop is getting through the sink” or “one slid up my shower” are common.
