Namanya adalah SMK Pelita Mulia. Salah satu SMK paling prestigius di Jawa Timur. Sedikit terisolir, namun ramai pendatang. Bidangnya adalah Informatika, bidang yang masih jarang digeluti kala itu. Sekolah ini menjadi primadona bagi sebagian kalangan. Bagaimana tidak, alumninya sekarang banyak yang bekerja di Dubai, Singapore bahkan banyak yang kerja di Amerika menjadi manager perusahaan besar. Hal menariknya adalah, alumni yang sudah 'settle' akan menarik adik tingkatnya untuk bisa mendapatkan posisi di perusahaan-perusahaan itu.

Sekolah swasta ini terbilang mahal, tapi nyatanya tidak sepi peminat. Sudah 10 tahun berdiri, semakin kesini, semakin berkembang pesat.  Pendaftar nya dari berbagai penjuru daerah. Bisa dikatkan hampir 80% orang yang bersekolah disana bukanlah orang asli Malang. Mereka adalah perantau dari seluruh daerah Jawa, mayoritas dari Jawa Timur. Pendaftar disini adalah dari berbagai kalangan. Persaingan menjadi begitu ketat, ketika ujian masukknya bukan hanya tes tulis, tapi harus melakukan tes fisik. Lari 10 kilometer. Seakan ikut sea games cabang lokal.

Hari ujian masuk SMK itu datang. Kali ini adalah ujian tahap akhir. Suasana pendaftaran SMK begitu padat. Banyak mobil-mobil berjajar memenuhi parkiran. Umumnya pendaftar diantar bapak dan ibunya. Ada yang hanya diantar bapaknya. Ada pula yang hampir satu kampung ikut menyaksikan pertarungan mendaptkan kursi di sekolah ini yang hanya ada 200 itu.

Aku duduk menunggu giliran, melamun, memandang pasang kaki berseliweran di depanku. Lalu pandanganku buyar. Tertuju pada sepasang sandal swallow lawas yang berbeda dengan sepatu-sepatu mengkilat lainnya. Sosok pemilik sendal itu adalah ayah yang mengantar seorang anak laki-laki yang akan ikut tes di SMK ini. Dari langkah ayahnya, terlihat ia baru pertama kali ke sekolah ini. Jelas anak dan bapak itu dari luar Malang. Matanya berbinar-binar melihat bangunan gedung, seakan membawa harapan besar anaknya akan sekolah di SMK yang prestigius ini. Dalam hati menggiring opiniku,

"Ia tak gentar untuk memperjuangkan pendidikan terbaik untuk anaknya, walau tulang pipinya menyiratkan betapa beratnya mencari sesuap nasi".

Hari pertama masuk SMK, aku tak heran. Lelaki yang duduk di barisan paling belakang itu adalah anak bapak yang aku ingat itu. Mahesa namanya, dia lolos juga.

Beberapa bulan pembelajaran, aku bisa menyimpulkan, Mahesa adalah orang yang sedikit introvert, cerdas, sedikit skeptikal dengan masa-masa remaja yang penuh dengan drama. Baik drama percintaan, drama persahabatan atau drama-drama yang lain. Ia hanya fokus pada dunianya, yaitu dunia informatika. Ia hampir menghabiskan waktunya di depan laptop untuk belajar membuat program. Bahkan kemampuannya sudah cukup jauh dibanding teman-teman sekelasnya.

Di suatu pagi. Dia menjadi obrolan. Alasannya sederhana, dia tak mau ikut dalam kegiatan Bulan Bahasa di sekolah. Memang acaranya adalah acara-acara yang tidak ada hubungannya dengan pelajaran. Hanya suatu tambahan kegiatan di sela-sela semester.

Dia digosipkan tidak peduli sama sekali di acara itu. Dan memilih untuk pulang kampung. Padahal satu kelas sangat berupaya keras dalam membuat kelas untuk bisa menunjukkan hal-hal terbaik. Menghias kelas, mengukuti lomba puisi, membuat drama kolosal dan sebagainya.

Dari insiden itu, ia dikenal tidak memiliki teman, hanya satu teman dekatnya. Alasannya adalah karena dia hanya peduli dengan dunianya. Aku bisa paham dengannya, karena memang tujuan dia bersekolah adalah hanya untuk belajar, bukan yang lain.

Suatu hari, SMK ini menginjak kelas 3, dimana masa-masa genting itu berada. Kami dihadapkan oleh suatu langkah yang punya 2 pedang. Antara lulus atau harus mengulang 1 tahun lamanya.

Ketika itu, kami harus bisa menyelesaikan suatu persoalan membuat program aplikasi. Bisa dibilang mirip menciptakan roket terbang. Susah nan rumit. Solanya hampir tidak pernah kami kenal.

Sementara, di tengah malam yang genting di anatara siswa kelas 3. Ada seseorang yang  mengirimkan program lengkap dengan dokumen cara monidifikasinya. Itu adalah dia, Mahesa. Semua orang di group WA kelas diam. Yang tadinya seperti pasar tak karuan. Seketika diam. Sang ketua kelas hanya membalas. "Terima kasih Hes".

Ujian berakhir.  Semua dinyatakan lulus. Bahagia. Tapi dia tetap biasa saja. Dari yang kami tak tahu apa-apa tentang dia, dia akhirnya bicara bahwa selama sekolah di SMK ini, dia harus bekerja secara online untuk memenuhi kebutuhan sekolah dan biaya kos. Pantas saja jika dia sangat skeptikal dengan lingkungannya. Ayahnya hanya seorang buruh bangunan, sementara ibunya telah tiada.

Sepuluh tahun telah berlalu, ia yang haya lulusan SMK, bisa menjadi manager di perusahaan USA. Sementara teman-teman yang lain masih menjadi pengabdi perusahaan nasional, mentok di multinasional. Kini ia mempekerjakan banyak orang. Bahkan teman seklasnya ada yang menjadi bawahannya. Tapi sosoknya kini lebih bersahaja.

The first home I remember is the one we lost. It is startling and vivid in my memory, the way that childhood sensations are. The rounded corners on each step of the wooden staircase, on which I bruised my shins. The pink enamel bathtub in my parents’ bathroom, where my father once submerged me in scathing purple water to calm a massive outbreak of hives after being bitten by an ant. The rough terracotta tiles of the roof I’d climbed out onto from my bedroom window one evening, to the alarm of the family across the street who spotted me sitting out there calmly in the twilight.

We lost this home when I was nine. In hindsight, the signs were clear. For years, our family holidays had been to destinations that featured casinos: cruise ships, Genting Highlands, Las Vegas. In my earliest memories I see my father standing before the dark television screen glowing with red and green numbers, stock market indices ticking up and down, up and down, as promising as Christmas itself. Another time, he gave me Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar to read, a story about a gambler who, through intense meditation, masters the ability to see through playing cards and predict the future, then uses his powers to make a massive fortune in casinos. My father believed he was a kind of Henry Sugar, gifted with the power of a sixth sense. Before school exams, he would run through elaborate mantras and visualization exercises with me. Our minds, he explained, could bend reality, if we only tried hard enough.

Needless to say, I believed him, adored him, and would have done anything he said.

The Berlin premiere of “All of Us Strangers” by British director Andrew Haigh (“45 Years”) marks the celebratory conclusion of the 18th edition of AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS on Saturday, December 9th, 2023. Only at the end of August 2023 Andrew Haigh's “All of Us Strangers” celebrated its world premiere at the American Telluride Film Festival. The 18th World Cinema Festival presents the “surreal romance” (Vogue) in its “Closing Night”. The on-screen appearances of Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, two of Ireland's hottest actors, are likely to provide star power. Lead actor Andrew Scott shone in his role as Moriarty in the BBC cult series “Sherlock” and other appearances in “James Bond 007: Specter” and “Fleabag”. Paul Mescal, star of the British series "Normal People", attracted worldwide attention with his moving performance in the independent hit "Aftersun". Director Andrew Haigh will also have fond memories for Berliners: his masterpiece “45 Years” won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale in 2015, which the leading actors Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay received.

The future of HIFF – Love & Anarchy, one of Finland’s most significant film festivals, is under threat. HIFF is now calling on its audience to help. There are three types of tickets available for the support screenings, and you can support with either 25 €, 40 € or 100 €. The tickets will go on sale on 29.11.2023 at 11.00.

One of the most popular guests in the history of HIFF has been the Irish actor Andrew Scott, who visited Helsinki in 2014. It is only appropriate that we are the first in Finland to screen a film that will be one of the highlights of his career.

All of Us Strangers, directed and written by Andrew Haigh, is one of the highlights of the autumn. The film, which received top reviews at Telluride and the New York Film Festival, is a drama about loneliness, grief and a longing for love that gets under your skin.
