It was a fun and sad day with our crewmates over at @astroglideofficial. The Social Media conductor was having a lovely time, but obviously was bittersweet with it ending. Here's some highlights from the watch party. To see more visit their twitter. If I get some time this weekend i'll try to put all the lube as a crew stuff together on the repo so you can see it all, just not gonna get to it tonight. I tried to get the timeline in order.. if not, apologies!

== GLAADforOFMD==
So in case it comes up.. there was some drama with some other fandoms regarding GLAAD today on Twitter. The TLDR; version is, some tweets went out regarding how disappointed we were about Ted Lasso winning out over Our Flag Means Death for Outstanding Comedy Series. Somehow, Yellowjackets fandom, who won a different category Outstanding Drama Series somehow got the idea that OFMD fans were complaining about Yellowjackets winning. It was corrected multiple times by multiple people but they kept coming. So yeah, twitter being twitter, not a great time. Sending love to @koneko_army and any other crewmates who had to deal with it.
If you wanna see the GlaadWinners visit The Hollywood Reporter
If you really wanna see the whole thread, you can visit Koneko's Twitter but honestly I don't recommend it, I wasn't even part of it and it stresses me out reading it.

Hey there lovelies. Another week has passed. I really hope it wasn't too hard on you-- and if you're off to work tomorrow too, that you get some semblance of rest soon. Sometimes it feels like we're too small to make a difference, or we don't know enough, or we're not pretty enough, or we're not strong enough. Or we're not enough of something, whatever it happens to be. But you know what? You do plenty. You are plenty. You are plenty beautiful, and plenty strong, and plenty full of life, and plenty knowledgeable, and you make plenty of a difference. You make a difference every day, in our lives, and the lives around you. I hope you get some rest and tomorrow you get to see even a glimpse of awesome you truly are. Take care lovelies <3

I had more downtime today than I have typically had on Saturdays, but that downtime was spent in the car. I am volunteering with our Girl Scout service unit on several upcoming Saturdays and through the end of the main academic year because they are hosting the bridging ceremony for all the troops in our unit. My mom helps out too, so we get to do it together, which is fun. It is mostly planning according to the budget allotted, making sure all the troops in the unit are updated, figuring out who in the troops will be bridging to the next level, getting supplies and bridging kits from the council, figuring out the food and drinks, venue, and well, all of the things you need for a major event. Although I will get a Service to Girl Scouting Senior pin for volunteering, I am going to end up learning a lot of valuable information about event planning. There are a few others from other troops that are volunteering with the unit as well, so I also met a couple of new girls and got to see a couple of girls that I already knew from other Girl Scout events.
I think I am very much ready for bed. I will try to get to all of the posts I missed and the tag games by tomorrow. <3

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
March 24, 2024 (Sunday)
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
MAR 25, 2024
The Senate passed the appropriations bill shortly after midnight on Saturday morning, and President Joe Biden signed it Saturday afternoon. In his statement after he signed the bill, Biden was clear: “Congress’s work isn’t finished,” he said. “The House must pass the bipartisan national security supplemental to advance our national security interests. And Congress must pass the bipartisan border security agreement—the toughest and fairest reforms in decades—to ensure we have the policies and funding needed to secure the border. It’s time to get this done.”
House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has refused to bring forward the national security supplemental bill to fund Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and humanitarian aid to Gaza. He has also refused to bring forward the border security measure hammered out in the Senate after House Republicans demanded it and passed there on February 13. Johnson is doing the bidding of former president Trump, who opposes aid to Ukraine and border security measures.
Congress is on break and will not return to Washington, D.C., until the second week in April.
By then, political calculations may well have changed.
MAGA Republicans appear to be in trouble.
The House recessed on Friday for two weeks in utter disarray. On ABC News’s This Week, former representative Ken Buck (R-CO), who left Congress Friday, complained that House Republicans were focusing “on messaging bills that get us nowhere” rather than addressing the country’s problems. He called Congress “dysfunctional.”
On Friday, NBC announced it was hiring former Republican National Committee (RNC) chair Ronna McDaniel as a political analyst. Today the main political story in the U.S. was the ferocious backlash to that decision. McDaniel not only defended Trump, attacked the press, and gaslit reporters, she also participated in the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
In an interview with Kristen Welker this morning on NBC’s Meet the Press—Welker was quick to point out that the interview had been arranged long before she learned of the hiring— McDaniel explained away her support for Trump’s promise to pardon those convicted for their participation in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by saying, “When you’re the RNC Chair, you kind of take one for the whole team.”
That statement encapsulated Trump Republicans. In a democracy, the “team” is supposed to be the whole country. But Trump Republicans like McDaniel were willing to overthrow American democracy so long as it kept them in power.
That position is increasingly unpopular. Former representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) wrote on social media: “Ronna facilitated Trump’s corrupt fake elector plot & his effort to pressure [Michigan] officials not to certify the legitimate election outcome. She spread his lies & called 1/6 ‘legitimate political discourse.’ That’s not ‘taking one for the team.’ It’s enabling criminality & depravity.”
McDaniel wants to be welcomed back into mainstream political discourse, but it appears that the window for such a makeover might have closed.
In the wake of Trump’s takeover of the RNC, mainstream Republicans are backing away from the party. Today, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said she could not “get behind Donald Trump” and expressed “regret that our party is seemingly becoming a party of Donald Trump.” She did not rule out leaving the Republican Party.
In Politico today, a piece on Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence, by Adam Wren also isolated Trump from the pre-2016 Republican Party. Pence appears to be trying to reclaim the mantle of that earlier incarnation of the party, backed as he is by right-wing billionaire Harlan Crow (who has funded Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas over the years) and the Koch network. Wren’s piece says Pence is focusing these days on “a nonprofit policy shop aimed at advancing conservative ideals.” Wren suggested that Pence’s public split from Trump is “the latest sign that Trumpism is now permanently and irrevocably divorced from its initial marriage of convenience with…Reaganism.”
Trump appears to believe his power over his base means he doesn’t need the established Republicans. But that power came from Trump’s aura of invincibility, which is now in very real crisis thanks to Trump’s growing money troubles. Tomorrow is the deadline for him to produce either the cash or a bond to cover the $454 million he owes to the people of the state of New York in fines and disgorgement of ill-gotten gains for fraud.
Trump does not appear to have the necessary cash and has been unable to get a bond. He claims a bond of such size is “unprecedented, and practically impossible for ANY Company, including one as successful as mine," and that "[t]he Bonding Companies have never heard of such a bond, of this size, before, nor do they have the ability to post such a bond, even if they wanted to.” But Louis Jacobson of PolitiFact corrected the record: it is not uncommon for companies in civil litigation cases to post bonds of more than $1 billion.
Trump made his political career on his image as a successful and fabulously wealthy businessman. Today, “Don Poorleone” trended on X (formerly Twitter).
The backlash to McDaniel’s hiring at NBC also suggests a media shift against news designed to grab eyeballs, the sort of media that has fed the MAGA movement. According to Mike Allen of Axios, NBC executives unanimously supported hiring McDaniel. A memo from Carrie Budoff Brown, who is in charge of the political coverage at NBC News, said McDaniel would help the outlet examine “the diverse perspectives of American voters.” This appears to mean she would appeal to Trump voters, bringing more viewers to the platform.
But former Meet the Press anchor Chuck Todd took a strong stand against adding McDaniel to a news organization, noting her “credibility issues” and that “many of our professional dealings with the RNC over the last six years have been met with gaslighting [and] character assassination.”
This pushback against news media as entertainment recalls the 1890s, when American newspapers were highly partisan and gravitated toward more and more sensational headlines and exaggerated stories to increase sales. That publication model led to a circulation war between Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World and William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal that is widely—and almost certainly inaccurately—blamed for pushing the United States into war with Spain in 1898.
More accurate, though, is that the sensationalism of what was known as “yellow journalism” created a backlash that gave rise to new investigative journalism designed to move away from partisanship and explain clearly to readers what was happening in American politics and economics. In 1893, McClure’s Magazine appeared, offering in-depth examinations of the workings of corporations and city governments and launching a new era of reform.
Three years later, publisher Adolph Ochs bought the New York Times and put up New York City’s first electric sign to advertise, in nearly 2,700 individual lights of red, white, blue, and green, that it would push back against yellow journalism by publishing “ALL THE NEWS THAT’S FIT TO PRINT.” Ochs added that motto to the masthead. With his determination to provide nonpartisan news without sensationalism, in just under 40 years, Ochs took over the paper from just over 20,000 readers to more than 465,000, and turned the New York Times into a newspaper of record.
In that era that looks so much like our own, the national mood had changed.

Old photos of Smriti Irani used to falsely accuse her of holding a fish during Navratri
Tumblr media
During the festival of Chaitra Navratri (April 9 to April 17th), photos of Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani with fish in her hands were being circulated across social media. The post claimed that the minister carried a fish and at the same time also carried a photo of Hindu goddess Durga. This was meant to question the stance of the BJP leaders as they condemned the sale and consumption of meat during the auspicious days of Navratri on one hand while the photos of Smriti Irani represented quite the opposite situation. The post is misleading as it contains old photos of Smriti Irani which were captured before Navratri. Greta Thunberg Detained At Demonstration In The Netherlands
Tumblr media
NETHERLANDS-ENVIRONMENT-CLIMATE-DEMO Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg (C) is arrested during a climate march against fossil subsidies near the highway A12 in the Hague, on April 6, 2024. Dozens of police officers, some on horseback, blocked protesters from reaching the A12 arterial highway into the Dutch seaside city, the scene of previous actions organised by the Extinction Rebellion (XR) group
Climate activist Greta Thunberg was detained by police at a demonstration in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Along with other protestors who attempted to obstruct a major highway leading into The Hague, Thunberg was first taken into custody and held for a brief period of time by local police on Saturday.
Following her release, Thunberg promptly re-joined a small group of demonstrators, obstructing an alternate route that led to the train station. She was taken into custody a second time and taken away in a police van.
A representative for the protest organizers, Extinction Rebellion, told Reuters that she was freed again in the evening after being detained for a few hours.
Thunberg informed the media prior to her arrest that the world is experiencing an existential crisis, which is the reason behind her protests.
“We are in a planetary emergency, and we are not going to stand by and let people lose their lives and livelihoods and be forced to become climate refugees when we can do something,” she said.
Protesters had attempted to obstruct the adjacent A12 motorway. Numerous times in recent months, protests calling for the elimination of all fossil fuel subsidies have blocked that road for several hours.
During earlier demonstrations, police transported arrested protestors to a different area of the city, where they were freed without facing any more repercussions.
The local police said that everyone who attempted to block roads was taken into custody but would not comment on specific cases.
Police reported on the social media that 412 demonstrators had been taken into custody, primarily for taking part in an illegal protest.

Chris Dutton: It’s the Kicks in the Teeth He Avoids the Most
Tumblr media
Go ahead, they said. Throw a music festival, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. So, yeah, that’s exactly what he and his sister, Nina, decided to do. They founded a country music festival directly across the street from where the legendary Jamboree in the Hills was staged for 40 years for more than 100,000 fans. They hired country stars like Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Trace Adkins, Joe Diffie, Jo Dee Messina, and Neal McCoy, and Dutton rolled in favored vendors, multiple stages, and invited local country performers, too. As far as the recipe Dutton knew, it was CHECK! CHECK! CHECK! And CHECK! And yup, it sure was fun each of those three years, so, yeah, what could possibly have gone wrong? He built it, right? They came, right? Right, but only in a kinda-sorta way. And the entertainment industry? It’s much more complicated than Dutton ever imagined. And then, of course, toss in the middle of all of it a coronavirus pandemic that redefined the rules of engagement when it came to competing against the industry’s monsters like Live Nation. So, that’s right, no Blame My Roots Festival during that third weekend of July this year. Will it come back? Yes, but only if the economics make more sense. If that’s not the case, though, Dutton’s flare when it comes to throwing a hell of a party will continue at The Pike 40 Restaurant and Bar in Morristown. The eatery’s outdoor dining area has been expanded into a full-blown entertainment venue, the ultra-popular “Pike Idol” competition enters into its second week Thursday evening at 7 p.m., and live music will take the exterior stage – weather permitting – both Friday and Saturday evenings. And that’s not to mention the menu, that long list of delectable delights anchored by the Dutton family’s Wagyu beef fresh from their cattle farm just a few miles away. Now that’s one recipe that takes care of itself every single time. Chris works on the family ranch with his father, the original John Dutton. What are the main reasons why you put Blame My Roots on hold for this summer? Well, despite a pretty nasty financial loss, I started working with a new booking agency in August, a few weeks after the 2022 show.  This bigger, Nashville-based agency, together with its marketing firm and partnership firm, got us excited about 2023. But it was still August, which is really late to start doing offers for the following Summer.  It felt like we were forcing something—because we were. Most festivals book in the spring for the following summer.  Also, most summer festivals go on sale for the following summer immediately after their current show. We were essentially anywhere from four to six months behind booking a 2023 festival that we would absolutely need to be successful, given all of our losses. So, we pulled the plug, paused, and picked up in April to attempt to be successful for 2024, in what we hope is the best approach to this thing. The truth is, we’ve never booked a festival as early as April. For 2019, we only had 6 months. Then, each year after, we started the August immediately following the previous show because we haven’t had a good gauge on how successful we were, or how we should build moving forward.  What have been the biggest lessons you have learned about the entertainment industry? I’ve only been doing this for five years, and I haven’t been particularly successful in a conventional sense. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m not proud of the festival we’ve created, or the team and experience we’ve all gathered since 2019, but, I’ve learned a lot about country music, live events, and event coordinating—which was probably the only skill set I had going into this.  I’ve learned that you can’t trust social media, or maybe just all the folks that abuse it.  Country music festivals are a lot about headliners, and not the upcoming, supporting acts. Rock festivals are different in that way. One of our openers in 2019 was Gabby Barrett, who later won New Female Artist of the Year in 2020, but not too many people came in early to see her. Same with Whiskey Myers that year. It’s very typical of any country show you go to …. I just notice it more as a festival owner.  Buying for festivals (soft ticket venues) is much different than for hard ticket venues (arenas, bars, etc.). I pay much more for artists to confirm my single date than venues pay to fill their calendars with whoever is available.  With radius blocks all being the same, this makes it very hard to compete as a newer festival.  Chris works every single day on planning the new Blame My Roots events so he can discover a way to make it work in East Ohio. How have "concert campers" changed through the years? They really haven’t. There’s just a lot less traditional campers for us. Of course, we’re not a festival built around a permanent campground, so we get the tailgating type.  Valley View had an abundance of campsites that were mostly set up for daily tailgates and places to crash. Then those folks would go home at 6 a.m., shower, nap, and come back out at noon all recharged.   The traditional campers are always a marvel to me. Full kitchens cooking 3 meals per day, not a speck of trash, showered up, clean clothes, etc., and usually the least grumpy! I miss both types throughout the year.  If "Beth Dutton" was your real sister, how would you try to settle her down? Oh, I don’t think I’d try to settle her down. I’d just hope she’s on my side! I’ve been surrounded by strong, outspoken, successful women who can put you in your place if it’s necessary. I was raised by them, grew up with them, worked alongside them, and I was smart enough to date and marry one.  There’s so many odd similarities with the show. My sister Nina is the youngest, and I suppose, for as long as I can remember, she’s been a strong-minded (Read: “Bossy”), outspoken chick that I haven’t had much success arguing with.  I suppose in a way, she’s made all her brothers look like “Jaime” once or twice.  Chris and his mother, Rita, have worked together to transform The Pike 40 into an impressive entertainment venue. What have been some of the funniest questions you've been asked about the wagyu beef and the cows on the ranch? There’s a lot of misunderstanding around Wagyu cattle. We’ve been asked by folks—with a legitimate straight face—if we have to give them alcohol and massages daily. I couldn’t imagine hiring farm help and giving them that job responsibility. We get asked, “What do they look like?”  Well, they look like cows! We have 30 Akaushi bulls on the farm and about 50 momma Akaushi cows. The other 400 momma cows are an Angus cross that is bred by the 30 bulls resulting in the “Domestic” or our “Ohio Wagyu.” Other than the Akaushi being red, you can’t really tell them apart until it comes to taste … and that’s by far the best part. By the way, you can purchase Dutton Cattle's Wagyu beef for your home. OFF THE MARKET –The Barbados National Terminal Company Limited (BNTCL) is off the selling block. Not only has Government taken the petroleum company’s proposed $100 million sale off the table, but it has also returned a deposit of US$10 million to regional oil giant Simpson Oil Limited (SOL). “The agreement with SOL has been terminated,” Minister of Energy Wilfred Abrahams confirmed to THE NATION in an exclusive interview. “The time for conclusion of the agreement had expired, and SOL requested their deposit back. The deposit has been returned to SOL, and that’s the end of that,” the minister said. But Abrahams was unable to say what would be the next move regarding the company.  (SS)
SMITH SEEKING JOB EXTENSION – The ailing Roslyn Smith is seeking to hold on to her post as general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) until year-end. Though warded at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital since last December, Smith made the request through a letter dated March 15, written by acting general secretary Delcia Burke. However, in response to Smith’s request for an extension to her contract, president Akanni McDowall said a decision on the matter should be deferred to the union’s incoming executive committee and national council which should take office in the next two weeks. In the letter to the union’s president and copied to its council members, Smith requested through Burke that a special council meeting be convened on Sunday at 1 p.m., for her to address the national council on the issue, and if that can’t happen, that the council considers her request.  (SS)
SOLUTIONS FOR TRANSFORMATION IN FOCUS FOR CDB’S 49TH ANNUAL MEETING – Solutions and strategies to drive economic and social transformation in the Caribbean will feature prominently when the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) holds the 49th Annual Meeting of its Board of Governors in Trinidad and Tobago on June 5 and 6, 2019. The Meeting programme will include key events and research highlighting transformation in the traditional and emerging sectors and examining the role which technology and digitalisation can play in advancing the Region’s development agenda. This will be the fifth time that CDB’s Annual Meeting will be held in Trinidad and Tobago, which is one of the founding members of the Bank. Previous meetings were held there in 1977, 1989, 2004 and 2011. CDB President, Dr Wm. Warren Smith, explained why transformation is a priority for the Region as a whole as well as for the Bank as it approaches its 50th anniversary year. “Our borrowing member countries are operating in an increasingly complex global environment. The challenges are new, different and becoming increasingly complex relative to what obtained when the Bank was founded in 1970.  As a Region and as an institution we need to, not just keep up but actually use innovation as a vehicle to leap ahead in this changing world. That is what we are anticipating in Trinidad and Tobago – a rich exchange of ideas, approaches and innovation that places the Region’s development at the forefront. We extend our thanks to the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago for hosting this important meeting,” said Dr Smith. Around 400 delegates, including Government Ministers and officials, development partners, private sector representatives, members of civil society, academia, and media are expected to attend the Meeting. The event will showcase the scope and impact of the Bank’s investments in its 19 borrowing member countries (BMCs). Participants will also engage in strategic discussions aimed at ensuring that every BMC can benefit fully from the transformation process and that CDB remains agile and relevant in a transformed Caribbean. A major highlight of the Bank’s Annual Meeting is the William G. Demas Memorial Lecture, held in memory of the eminent Trinidadian economic scholar and Caribbean leader who served as the second President of CDB from 1974 to 1988. Now in its 20th year, the lecture features a distinguished speaker presenting on a trending economic and social development topic of importance to the Caribbean. Another significant event is VYBZING, where the Bank engages directly with young people on regional development issues and which is held ahead of the Meeting. For the first time, the event will have youth representatives from all 19 of CDB’s BMCs. During the course of the Meeting, there will be various interactive seminars, at which thought leaders and expert panellists will share new research findings and data on key topics. This year’s line-up will focus on agriculture, digitalisation for development and vulnerability and resilience. The Bank will also convene its annual Governors’ Roundtable. This year the Roundtable will provide the platform for discussion of the strategic direction of CDB as part of the process for formulating the new Strategic Plan 2020-2024. (SS)
FALL OF DEATH – A subcontractor’s first day on the job at Portvale Sugar Factory ended tragically on Saturday afternoon when he fell 70 feet to his death. Paul Clifford, who worked with Tarico Building Inc., was hired by Innotech Services Ltd, to fix the roof on the main building at the Blowers, St James factory. The job Clifford and his team was contracted to do, was expected to be completed over the weekend. Clifford, a British national, appeared to have stepped on one of the panels on the roof and fell through. Acting Inspector Rodney Inniss said police were treating it as a freak accident. “A number of workers were in here when the incident happened, so right now, we are questioning a number of people trying to get a sense of what happened today [yesterday],” Inniss said. General manager at the Barbados Agricultural Management Company (BAMC) Leslie Parris described the circumstances as tragic, sad and one that left the staff in shock.  (SS)
MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER AFTER NEW ZEALAND MOSQUE SHOOTINGS – The main suspect in mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques was charged with one count of murder a day after an attack that killed 49 people and wounded dozens, prompting the prime minister to vow reform of the country’s gun laws.  Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian citizen, appeared in a Christchurch District Court on Saturday and was remanded without a plea until his next scheduled appearance in the South Island city’s High Court on April 5.  Handcuffed and wearing a white prison suit, Tarrant did not speak. His court-appointed lawyer made no application for bail or name suppression.  He was likely to face further charges, police said.  The attack, which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern labeled as terrorism, was the worst ever peacetime mass killing in New Zealand and the country raised its security threat level to the highest.  Tarrant has been identified as a suspected white supremacist, based on his social media activity.  Footage of the attack on one of the mosques was broadcast live on Facebook, and a “manifesto” denouncing immigrants as “invaders” was also posted online via links to related social media accounts.  The video footage showed a man driving to the mosque, entering it and shooting randomly at people inside. Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay on the floor, the video showed. Reuters was unable to confirm the footage’s authenticity and police urged people not to view or share it.  Police said the alleged shooter was arrested in a car, which was carrying improvised explosive devices, 36 minutes after they were first called. It was still unclear whether any other shooters were involved in the attacks.  Two other people were in custody and police said they were working to understand their involvement.  Armed police were deployed at several locations in all cities, unusual in a country that has had low levels of gun violence.  Ardern said the main suspect was a licensed gun owner who used five weapons during his rampage, including two semi-automatic weapons and two shotguns.  Authorities were working to find out how he had obtained the weapons and a license, and how he was able to enter the country to carry out the attack, she said.   “I can tell you one thing right now, our gun laws will change,” Ardern told reporters, saying a ban on semi-automatic weapons would be considered.  None of those arrested had a criminal history or was on any watchlist in New Zealand or Australia.  (SS)
A DECLARATION OF FOLLY – Barbados Cricket Association president Conde Riley has condemned a move by Leeward Islands Hurricanes to concede defeat with a bizarre second innings declaration in their final round West Indies Championship regional four-day match. A miscalculation of points denied the Hurricanes a second-place finish in the tournament after a failed attempt to prevent Barbados Pride from attaining further points in the match that ended prematurely in the afternoon session at the Vivian Richards Stadium on Friday. Cricket West Indies cricket operations manager Roland Holder told THE NATION on Saturday they had requested reports from all the parties and he was not prepared to make any further comment until those submissions were received. When contacted, however, Riley said he could not understand the thinking behind the Hurricanes’ decision. (SS)
CLEAN-UP AT ALL SAINTS – Several workers from Master’s Touch Environmental Services were busy at All Saints Primary School in St Peter yesterday undertaking an extensive cleaning and sanitising of the school. Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw announced on Thursday that the school would be closed to facilitate the cleaning following rat infestation. “We were made aware of the issues at the school [All Saints] on Monday. I suspect, due to the harvesting of the sugar cane, what has happened is the rats have taken over the institution and have done some breeding within the roofs of some parts of the premises. The Ministry of Health would have intervened and would have baited,” she said on Thursday. The cleaning is being done with the assistance of the ministries of Health and the Environment. When a NATION team visited the school yesterday, workers dressed in gloves, dust masks and white cleaning suits were busy sanitising desks, chairs, closets, windows and doors and discarding old material. Teachers were also on hand assisting where necessary. All Saints joined the list of primary schools that have been closed in recent times, including Milton Lynch, St James, Blackman and Gollop and Cuthbert Moore due to environmental issues. (SS)
DRAMATIC BEGINNINGS – Storybooks, comics, and popular children’s movies came to life at the Maria Holder Nursery School as they celebrated Character Day under the theme Developing Literacy Through Creative Teaching Techniques on the school’s Oldbury, St Philip compound on Friday. Students delighted their peers, teachers and parents as they showcased their costumes which ranged from Princess Elsa to Bob The Builder. Two of the most unique costumes were of a jockey which was worn by Jadarri Francis and an owl which was worn by Mahkia Carter. Principal of the school Sharon Knight said the event was organised to encourage children to read. “Reading is important. No matter where we go, we have to be readers. We just wanted the opportunity to develop a love for reading [in the students] from an early age. When children can dramatise a story and get into the story, it motivates them to read more. That is why we have the story Character Day,” she said. Knight told the media that Character Day was planned by the school since the beginning of the school term. “We have a school library which encourages them to read, and we also got the parents involved in reading at an early age. Some people do not believe that children at this young age can develop a love for reading but this is the foundation and we have to make sure we have a good foundation. [So] that when they get older they can recognise the importance of reading,” she said. The principal of the Oldbury learning institution told the media that the activities carried out for Literacy Week would be reinforced in the classrooms throughout the remainder of the term as they strive to help the students develop. “We want our children to be the best, and to be the best, they must read,” she said. NEW-LOOK CROP OVER COMING – Many changes are coming to Crop Over 2019. Chief executive officer at the National Cultural Foundation, Carol Roberts-Reifer, made the official announcement yesterday at Ilaro Court during a sponsors’ reception. Among them is the new Soca Monarch competition, which will be held at the National Botanical Gardens, Waterford, St Michael. This replaces the Soca Royale. There will no longer be a semi-final component for the Pic-O-De-Crop competition, but rather the 16 calypsonians and a reserve will meet MrBlood in the finals. In addition, a revamped version of the Cavalcade concept called Bajarama will be held at different locations.  (SS)

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
July 5, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
JUL 6, 2023
Yesterday the official account of the Republican National Committee tweeted Independence Day greetings with a graphic of the Liberian flag, which has one star, rather than that of the United States, which has fifty.
Even more troubling was the tweet from Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) attributing to founder Patrick Henry a false quotation saying that “this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Historian Seth Cotlar noted that the quotation actually came from the April 1956 issue of a virulently antisemitic white nationalist magazine, The Virginian.
Also yesterday, Trump-appointed judge Terry A. Doughty of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana issued a preliminary injunction saying the First Amendment prevents the government from trying to stop the spread of disinformation.
Doughty has become the judge Republican attorneys general seek out in their challenges to the Biden administration, and in this case, that judge shopping appears to have paid off. In a lawsuit brought by the attorneys general of Louisiana and Missouri, Doughty temporarily prevented employees of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Health and Human Services from talking to social media companies for “the purpose of urging, encouraging, pressuring, or inducing in any manner the removal, deletion, suppression, or reduction of content containing protected free speech.”
At stake is the belief among right-wing figures that government officials and social media companies have teamed up to silence them, although in fact, studies show that social media algorithms actually amplify right-wing political content and that social media companies are reluctant to remove it out of fear of backlash from extremists. Right-wing complaints stem from the removal of disinformation during the pandemic, and of accounts linked to the violence of January 6, 2021.
For years, the government has worked with social media companies to try to address terrorism, images of child sexual abuse, and disinformation about the pandemic and elections. But disinformation has become a key political tool for the Republicans, and going into the 2024 election season, they have doubled down on the disinformation that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent and flooded the media with that lie.
Fittingly, as Philip Bump pointed out in the Washington Post today, Doughty’s injunction accepts right-wing allegations at face value, meaning he cites as a mark against the administration something that, in fact, didn’t happen.
Foreign accounts have amplified right-wing lies, and the injunction specifically targets the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, which leads the push to identify and stop malign foreign influence in our social media.
But there is a new twist there: Russia’s Yevgeny Prigozhin—the man who recently led his Wagner Group soldiers toward Moscow to demand changes in Russian military leadership—was key to the 2016 Russian disinformation campaign, and Reuters reported on Sunday that he announced on Saturday that his media company, including a troll factory that sought to influence public opinion in the U.S., is shutting down.
That the injunction claims to protect free speech by forcing people to stop communication was not lost on observers. Harvard constitutional law professor Laurence Tribe called the injunction “blatantly unconstitutional” and noted: “Censoring a broad swath of vital communications between government and social media platforms in the name of combating censorship makes a mockery of the first amendment.” Tribe joined law professor Leah Litman to eviscerate the “breathtaking scope” of the order.
The Department of Justice appealed the order today. It will go to the right-wing Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Disinformation is also behind the attempt of far-right House members to undermine the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, both of which maintain the rule of law in the United States. The FBI was key to investigating Russia’s attempt to help former president Trump win the 2016 presidential election and the efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, while the DOJ has been central to making sure that those who have broken the law are held accountable.
Right-wing Republicans, many of whom are implicated in the events surrounding the 2020 election, insist that the FBI—overseen by Trump appointee Christopher Wray—and the DOJ are improperly targeting them. They are calling for Wray to be fired and Attorney General Merrick Garland, who heads the DOJ, to be impeached. Barring that, they want to starve the department and the bureau by slashing their budgets.
Trump attacked the FBI and the DOJ from the beginning of his presidency, and today the House investigation into the FBI and DOJ includes the Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means Committees. It is currently centered on right-wing insistence that President Biden’s 53-year-old son, Hunter, received a lenient deal from the DOJ and that the DOJ retaliated against an IRS whistleblower about the case. Legal analysts say that, in fact, the younger Biden got a harsher deal than others and point out that David Weiss, the U.S. attorney overseeing the case, was appointed by Trump.
On June 7, Weiss told Jordan in a letter that Garland had given Weiss full authority over the case; on June 30, Weiss wrote to deny that the DOJ had retaliated against a whistleblower, reiterating that he had “been granted ultimate authority over this matter.” Wray is scheduled to testify before the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), on July 12. Jordan is a key critic of what he claims is FBI focus on Republicans.
Disinformation was a key factor in the rise of Russian president Vladimir Putin to the authoritarian power he now holds. The importance of insisting on the rule of law was the point of a BBC report today on a brutal attack on Russian investigative journalist Elena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov in Chechnya, while they were on their way to court for the sentencing of the wife of a federal judge who was kidnapped by security forces in retaliation for the activism of her son. The two were abducted, beaten, stabbed, and tortured.
“This story,” the BBC said, translating from the Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets, “is a test of whether society and the state can protect the law, in other words, itself. The law is the foundation of any state. Take it away and everything falls apart. And instead of civilization you get chaos and destruction. The law must always function and apply to everyone. In recent times, we have seen how certain people have been above the law. In place of the judge with his gavel—thugs with sledgehammers. And this is the result.”
Also yesterday, Guardian journalist Luke Harding reported that Kyiv says Russians have placed explosives on top of two nuclear reactors at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station. This station is in an area occupied by Russian forces. Nonetheless, Russian social media accounts are spreading the accusation that Ukraine is about to attack and damage the station.
U.S. nuclear expert Cheryl Rofer notes that the situation in Zaporizhzhia is different from the conditions that led to other nuclear crises. The Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union, that melted down in 1986 had a different kind of reactor, and the Fukushima reactor in Japan was fully operational right up until the moment the 2011 earthquake hit, making it much hotter than the Zaporizhzhia reactor is currently.
Regardless of the relative danger, though, Rofer reinforces the dangers of authoritarian government when she concludes: “The danger to the plant is wholly Russia’s responsibility for starting the war and occupying the plant.”
