Grandaddy’s Sunday Dinner Bacon Pepper Burgers
Note: The following is an excerpt adapted from Love Language of the South: A Celebration of the Food, the Hospitality, and the Stories of My Southern Home by Stacy Lyn Harris.  I don’t remember when it started. I don’t remember when it ended. I just remember that for years during most of my childhood, we’d eat Sunday dinner at Grandaddy’s house. Everyone was there: my immediate family, my uncle, and the cousins. I’d get an adrenaline rush as soon as we turned the corner in my stepdad’s red Toyota 4Runner. As soon as the car pulled up on the curb (we parked on the curb, so the driveway was clear for the others), I’d race over to one of my favorite spots on earth—the landing strip of lush green grass between my grandad’s house and the neighbors. To me it was the most empowering green gymnastics mat.  As my parents walked in the door, I began my tumbling pass with the imagined onlookers as my audience. Over and over again I’d tumble with the utmost precision: roundoff, back handspring, back handspring, back layout, back handspring. I felt invincible! “Stacy, it’s time to eat,” my mom would call out the door, bringing me back to reality. I’d run inside through the kitchen, head straight for the blue swivel chair at the end of the den, jump in the chair, and spin until I couldn’t see straight. About the time the world stopped spinning, I’d see my grandfather pulling the most amazing burgers off the grill.  The second he’d enter the door, I’d make a beeline to him and throw my arms around him, almost knocking his town-famous peppered burgers to the floor. Grandaddy wasn’t super affectionate and was kind of quiet, like my dad. He was half-blooded Creek Indian and half Greek. His olive skin had been darkened and wrinkled by the sun, and he never tired of telling me, “Stay out of the sun, Stacy. You don’t want to end up looking like this.” Maybe it was because I loved him so much, I thought he was good-looking. I don’t remember him telling me that he loved me, but I do remember him telling me that I look exactly like his mother. I felt that meant something special to him, and that in turn made me feel special.  We’d all overfill our plates with simple but delicious food: hamburgers, French fries, fried pickles, and fried green tomatoes. The adults and kids would squeeze around the kitchen table to discuss my grandad’s favorite topic: politics; Yes, politics was the topic of our discussions almost every week, which made for exciting conversation—mainly because no one agreed! The only thing that could get Grandaddy off the topic of politics was dessert.  Historically significant Southern desserts were always served at his house: banana pudding, coconut cream pie, ambrosia, lane cake, coconut cake, key lime pie, pineapple upside-down cake, caramel cake—and let me tell you, the caramel cake was the real deal! The desserts were never ending, nor did I want them to be.  After dinner I would often play hide-and-go-seek with my cousins. My favorite hiding spot was way up in the top of an oak tree. I could sit up there and dream for days, until I’d hear “Stacy, get out of that tree, there’s heat lightning.” Just about every Sunday there was heat lightning, and then a summer shower would move in, drawing me back indoors. Summer Sunday showers were our cue that the weekend was over and it was time to go, but I knew I’d be back next Sunday. Those weekends have never really been over for me. When I smell a burger cooking, or I run my fingers along a rough wool fabric, I’m back on that swivel chair at Grandaddy’s house waiting for him to finish my burger and feeling lucky to be by his side. Ultimate Bacon Pepper Burgers With Cheddar and Remoulade Serves 9 Ingredients For the Burgers * 11⁄2 pounds ground chuck steak * 11⁄2 pounds ground venison loin * 1⁄2 cup freshly ground black pepper, plus more for seasoning * 2 tablespoons kosher salt * 4 tablespoons (1⁄2 stick) unsalted butter, melted * 9 brioche hamburger buns, split * 9 slices sharp cheddar cheese  For the Remoulade… http://dlvr.it/T44Pbc

The winter storm (NYT) A sprawling storm dumped snow across much of the U.S., including areas that rarely get it. More than 6 inches fell on Austin, Texas—the most in 55 years. Millions of people are without electricity. The cold shattered longstanding records: Temperatures dropped to 17 degrees in Houston and to minus 38 degrees in Hibbing, Minn. At one point Monday, the Weather Service had winter storm warnings issued from Brownsville, Tex., along the U.S.-Mexico border to Caribou, Maine, a distance of more than 2,500 miles. Snow even accumulated on the beach in Galveston, a city where residents are far more accustomed to hurricanes than they are to wintry weather.
Millions endure record cold without power; at least 16 dead (AP) A winter storm that left millions without power in record-breaking cold weather claimed more lives Tuesday, including three people found dead after a tornado hit a seaside town in North Carolina and four family members who perished in a Houston-area house fire while using a fireplace to stay warm. The storm that overwhelmed power grids and immobilized the Southern Plains carried heavy snow and freezing rain into New England and the Deep South and left behind painfully low temperatures. Wind-chill warnings extended from Canada into Mexico. In all, at least 16 deaths were reported. The worst U.S. power outages were in Texas, affecting more than 4 million homes and businesses. More than 250,000 people also lost power across parts of Appalachia, and another quarter million were without electricity following an ice storm in northwest Oregon. Four million people lost power in Mexico. Utilities from Minnesota to Texas implemented rolling blackouts to ease the burden on power grids straining to meet the extreme demand for heat and electricity.
Pelosi says independent commission will examine Capitol riot (AP) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday that Congress will establish an independent, Sept. 11-style commission to look into the deadly insurrection that took place at the U.S. Capitol. Pelosi said the commission will “investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex … and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power.” In a letter to Democratic colleagues, Pelosi said the House will also put forth supplemental spending to boost security at the Capitol. An independent commission along the lines of the one that investigated the Sept. 11 attacks would probably require legislation to create. That would elevate the investigation a step higher, offering a definitive government-backed accounting of events. Still, such a panel would pose risks of sharpening partisan divisions or overshadowing President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda.
Ambassador sweepstakes underway as figures jockey for plum posts (Washington Post) Harry M. Reid’s phone has been ringing a lot lately, with calls from interest groups, friends and potential candidates themselves, all craving one thing: an ambassadorship. The former Senate majority leader then picks up the phone and dials Steve Ricchetti, one of President Biden’s top advisers, who for months has been fielding requests for plum positions. “There’s very few political jobs that bring the dignity of being an ambassador for the United States to a country. It’s a very prestigious position,” Reid said. But he suggested the would-be envoys shouldn’t hold their breath: “I think with the impeachment going on and trying to get the Cabinet filled, I think people should be understanding that things are more important than the ambassadorship right now with the president.” It is a sweepstakes that comes along every four or eight years—intense jockeying in public and private as the well-heeled and well-connected seek coveted positions that come with lavish housing, a staff of chefs and an expectation that the U.S. envoy will put the digs to use for parties. With its mix of famous figures and exotic locales, the competition always attracts interest. But it is under more scrutiny than usual this year as Biden stresses his desire to repair international relationships that frayed under Trump, with ambassadors likely to play a key role in that effort.
A third party (Gallup) Americans’ desire for a third party has ticked up since last fall and now sits at a high in Gallup’s trend. Sixty-two percent of U.S. adults say the “parties do such a poor job representing the American people that a third party is needed,” an increase from 57% in September. Support for a third party has been elevated in recent years, including readings of 60% in 2013 and 2015 and 61% in 2017. Meanwhile, 33% of Americans believe the two major political parties are doing an adequate job representing the public, the smallest percentage expressing this view apart from the 26% reading in October 2013.
Kidnap capital Mexico eyes biometric phone registry, sparking privacy fears (Reuters) A plan by Mexican lawmakers to put millions of cell phone users’ data in a biometric registry, billed as a tool to fight kidnapping and extortion, has sparked a backlash from telecoms companies and rights groups who warn it could lead to stolen data and higher costs. Already approved in the lower house of Congress, the reform is in line with President Andres Lopez Obrador’s vow to counter crime using intelligence methods rather than force, but critics say it reveals the pitfalls of governments seeking to gather more citizen data for law enforcement purposes. Under the plan, America Movil, AT&T Inc and other carriers would be responsible for collecting customers’ data, including fingerprints or eye biometrics, to submit to a registry managed by Mexico’s telecoms regulator. But a telecoms industry group that counts some major companies as members warned in an open letter that the reform could increase phone theft as criminals look to get around the registry by stealing devices and could risk customers’ safety if personal data were misused.
As the virus crisis drags on, hard-hit French youth struggle (AP) On a recent evening, Leïla Ideddaim waited to receive a bag of food, along with hundreds of other French young people who are unable to make ends meet. She saw the chitchat that accompanied the handout as a welcome byproduct, given her intense isolation during the pandemic. The 21-year-old student in hotel and restaurant management has seen her plans turned upside down by the virus crisis. With restaurants and tourist sites shuttered and France under a 6 p.m. curfew, her career prospects are uncertain. Odd jobs that were supposed to keep her going during her studies are hard to come by. “I’m in a fog,” said Ideddaim, who moved to Paris last year and is now struggling to meet both her basic needs and her emotional ones. The pandemic has devastated economies the world over, pushing vulnerable people deeper into poverty or tipping some into it for the first time. In France, the economic fallout has weighed particularly heavily on young people—and their woes have only been compounded by disruptions to their studies and social interactions. Nearly a quarter of French young people can’t find work—two-and-a-half times the national unemployment rate and one of the highest in the European Union’s 27 nations. Many university students now rely on food aid and several organizations have rallied to meet the need.
Separatists grow majority in Catalonia despite Socialist win (AP) The pro-union Socialist Party claimed a narrow win in regional elections in Catalonia late Sunday, but the bloc of parties supporting secession by Spain’s northeastern corner widened their control of the regional parliament. The outcome confirms that pro-separatist sentiment has not waned despite the collective suffering of the COVID-19 pandemic and a frustrated secession bid in October 2017 that left several of its members in prison. Four years on, the wealthy region that has its own language spoken alongside Spanish remains divided down the middle by the secession question. However, it was not clear if the separatist parties would be able to overcome the in-fighting that has plagued their bloc since the dream of an easy breakaway from Spain proved elusive.
Moscow residents get the snow they longed for (Washington Post) The snow started falling late Thursday in Moscow, sticking to car windshields and hiding walking paths. By the time it was over on Sunday, parked cars were buried under heaps of snow. The weekend’s wintery blast was noteworthy even for the Russian capital. A year ago, as Moscow experienced its warmest winter in nearly 200 years of record keeping, Russians longed for the white covering that often makes January and February’s dark days appear brighter. This wallop caused more than 100 flights to be delayed or canceled as some residents traversed downtown in skis.
India arrests student activist (Foreign Policy) New Delhi police have arrested a 22-year-old activist for sedition after she shared and made edits to a document—a Google doc—shared by climate activist Greta Thunberg when she expressed her support for India’s farmer protests. The document provided background on the protests as well as providing advice on nonviolent actions to support the farmers. “The Indian state must be standing on very shaky foundations if Disha Ravi, a 22-year-old student of Mount Carmel college and a climate activist, has become a threat to the nation,” said P. Chidambaram of the opposition Indian National Congress.
India’s dramatic fall in virus cases leaves experts stumped (AP) When the coronavirus pandemic took hold in India, there were fears it would sink the fragile health system of the world’s second-most populous country. Infections climbed dramatically for months and at one point India looked like it might overtake the United States as the country with the highest case toll. But infections began to plummet in September, and now the country is reporting about 11,000 new cases a day, compared to a peak of nearly 100,000, leaving experts perplexed. India, like other countries, misses many infections, and there are questions about how it’s counting virus deaths. But the strain on the country’s hospitals has also declined in recent weeks, a further indication the virus’s spread is slowing. When recorded cases crossed 9 million in November, official figures showed nearly 90% of all critical care beds with ventilators in New Delhi were full. On Thursday, 16% of these beds were occupied.
Myanmar military guarantees new election; protesters block train services (Reuters) Myanmar’s military junta guaranteed on Tuesday that it would hold an election and hand over power, denied its ouster of an elected government was a coup or that its leaders were detained, and accused protesters of violence and intimidation. The junta’s defence of its Feb. 1 seizure of power and arrest of government leader Aug San Suu Kyi and others came as protesters again took to the streets and as China dismissed rumours spreading on social media that it had helped with the coup. As well as the demonstrations in towns and cities across the ethnically diverse country, a civil disobedience movement has brought strikes that are crippling many functions of government. The unrest has revived memories of bloody outbreaks of opposition to almost half a century of direct army rule that ended in 2011 when the military began a process of withdrawing from politics.
Defying Biden administration, Egypt again arrests relatives of Egyptian American activist (Washington Post) Egyptian security forces raided the homes of six relatives of an outspoken Egyptian American activist, arresting and imprisoning two cousins in defiance of calls by the Biden administration for the Egyptian government to improve its human rights record, rights advocates said Tuesday. The targeting of the relatives of Mohamed Soltan, a human rights defender based in Northern Virginia, marks the latest attempt by the government of President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi to silence its critics living abroad, according to political opponents of the former military chief. Sunday’s arrests came roughly three months after five of Soltan’s relatives were released from prison, days after Joe Biden won the presidency. They had been forcibly taken from their homes in June after Soltan filed a lawsuit in the United States against former Egyptian prime minister Hazem el-Beblawi for his role in inflicting torture on Soltan when he was imprisoned in Egypt. Biden highlighted the case during the presidential election campaign, tweeting that torturing Egyptian activists and “threatening their families is unacceptable.” He also warned of “no more blank checks for Trump’s ‘favorite dictator,’” referring to Sissi by a term that Trump once used for him. By going after Soltan’s relatives again, as well as the relatives of other foreign-based critics in recent days, the Sissi government appears to be challenging the Biden administration and its efforts to make human rights a foreign policy priority once again for the United States, activists and analysts said.
Zuma Risks Arrest After Defying South Africa Corruption Inquiry (NYT) Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa whose nearly decade-long tenure was tainted by breathtaking corruption scandals, refused to appear before an inquiry panel Monday, raising the possibility that he would be imprisoned for contempt. The panel’s leader, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, said he was seeking an order from the Constitutional Court, the country’s highest court, that would “impose a term of imprisonment on Mr. Zuma.” Justice Zondo’s move catapulted the simmering theme of corruption during Mr. Zuma’s term, which lasted from 2009 to 2018, into a tense showdown over the accountability of the former president. His successor, Cyril Ramaphosa, has promised to purge the governing African National Congress of endemic problems of bribery and graft that have severely damaged its credibility in South Africa, one of the continent’s most important economic powerhouses. Mr. Zuma, 78, had been set to appear before the inquiry panel, the Commission on State Capture, starting Monday for a week of testimony about his role in the corruption. The former president sent a letter from his lawyers instead, arguing that he was not legally bound to appear.

With Dutch, British, and Indian influence, this metropolis is home to staggering glimpses of both urban and natural sceneries.
Known as the Mother City by locals, Cape Town is one of the oldest cities in the country, and its natural diversity is just as rich as its people The Table Mountains National Park makes for a breathtaking backdrop, and it’s just one of the many outdoors activities that you can enjoy: paragliding, surging, camping, and many more.
This fascinating multicultural city will attract you like a magnet. Read on to find the top 10 places that you should visit.
MOCAA
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa will serve as the perfect introduction to the impressive artistic manifestation throughout the continent. The building, a historical landmark on itself, features over 100 exhibition rooms showcasing African heritage.
Robben Island
Situated 7km off the coast of Cape Town, you will find the UNESCO World Heritage Site, formerly used as a prison for nearly 400 years. During the apartheid, Robben Island was the place that kept captive many Black people, including President Nelson Mandela. The harsh looking building in the island today stands as a symbol of both the heartbreaking history of the racial segregation and a symbol of strength.
Table Mountain National Park
The iconic plateau will surprise you at every turn you take.     Besides offering magnificent views of the city, there’s a lot that you can see on the mountain itself. Start with the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, a 1,300 acres’ area where you will be able to find over 1,400 endemic flowers. Despite the cape lion no longer roaming the area you can still find other emblematic species such as the caracal, Chacma baboons, and rock hyrax.
Lion’s Head
Looming over the city at 2,195 ft. above sea level, Lion’s Head is the perfect destination for hiking enthusiasts.
The two hours hike to the top will provide splendid views along the way, but the real prize will be found once you reach the top, where you will be regaled with a panoramic view of the Atlantic Seaboard. The site is also popular to enjoy the full moon rising.
Lion’s Head
Chapman’s Peak Drive
Constructed during the First World War and located on the western side of the peninsula, the nine kilometer drive is one of the most beautiful in the world. Enjoy the coastal views as you drive alongside the steep cliffs, reaching up the peak at a 160-metre viewpoint of Hout Bay, Noordhoek, and the Cape of Storms.

London - Blog
Why Visit London, UK?
London is a real world city – with some of the most famous buildings, museums and galleries in the world and 2000 years of history to go with them.
But it’s not just looking backwards, there’s always a new bar, play or concert to see.
London is also one of the most international cities, with people from all around the world making their home here, so it’s just as easy to get Indian street food as it is a roast dinner.
Yes, it might rain a lot and no people won’t smile on the Tube, but whatever you’re interested in – from museums to shopping, rock to opera, budget to luxury – there’s a London that will suit you.
Best Things To do in London, UK
Walk along South Bank: follow the Thames from the London Eye along to Tower Bridge and you’ll pass some of London’s most famous buildings, like the Tower of London, Shakespeare’s Globe and Tate Modern.
Get a great view: to see the city from above, you can climb to the top of the Monument and the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, and from February there’ll be a viewing platform at the top of London’s new tallest building, the Shard.
Visit the museums: the permanent collections at London’s museums are free so you can dip into as many as you like. Choose from big names like the British Museum and National Gallery, or check out some of the smaller museums like Sir John Soane’s Museum and the Cabinet War Rooms. Try this guided tour of the British Museum and National Gallery
Escape the city into the parks: London has plenty of parks and gardens, from the manicured gardens of Hyde Park and St James Park to huge, hilly Hampstead Heath and the hidden gardens tucked away in residential squares.
Walk through London’s history: London Walks run themed walking tours around London, from the haunts of Jack the Ripper and night-time ghost tours, to Harry Potter film locations and Olympic London.
Where to Stay in London
London’s not cheap, but you can find a few London budget accommodation options.
For a local and unique stay check out the properties available on Airbnb in London.
For a hostel, try the YHA London Central, about five minutes walk from Oxford Street, or the Safestay Hostel.
For a budget hotel, the Asian chain Tune have four hotels across the city from about £35 a night.
For high end, you can splash out on world-class hotels like The Savoy, The Dorchester or Claridges.
Markets & Shopping in London
London has a wide range of markets.
Some of my favourites are Borough Market for food and drink, Portobello Road Market for antiques and fashion, Camden Market for vintage and alternative clothes, and the Colombia Road Flower Market.
Oxford Street is the city’s most famous shopping street, but it’s mostly full of chain stores and big department stores.
For more interesting independent shops check out Carnaby Street, Covent Garden or the King’s Road.
Also worth seeing is Harrods, though more for its completely over-the-top décor – especially at Christmas – than for actual shopping.
Getting Around London
Central London is fairly walkable, but the city sprawls out so you’ll need to use the Tube or bus. Get an Oyster card to save money on transport – you load it up with money and touch in and out on the bus or Tube.
Also, try the riverboat services along the Thames for a scenic view of the city. But watch out for line closures on the Tube at weekends and it closes every night around 1 am, so you’ll need to get a night bus or cab after that.
Finding Wi-Fi in London
Free wifi access in London isn’t great but it’s getting better. There are free wireless hotspots in Islington and the City of London.
Otherwise, chain cafes like Pret a Manger, Starbucks and Coffee Republic give free wifi to customers...
Getting To London
London is a major international hub with five main airports – Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Luton and Stansted.
But watch out as although they’re described as ‘London’ airports they’re often way out of the city, so you’ll need to get a train or bus into central London.
There’s also the international Eurostar train service which runs from Paris and Brussels right into St Pancras Station in the centre of town.

Types of Road Trips
Adventure: Winding coastal highway CA1, Indian Chief Dark Horse Motorcycle, California coast line from Wine Country to SoCal, stopped at a tourist trap for three hours while a rain storm passed, Half Moon Bay, small town B&B’s, picnic in Big Sur, sunset on a wide blue ocean, sunglasses tan lines, arms wrapped around you
NatGeo: Antofagasta, Chile to Maipú, Concepción, Región del Bío Bío, Chile; Off Roading Jeep Wrangler, follow the mountain base roads and up mountains when possible, eating really good local food, tent packed with a backpack of clothes, seeing Hand of the Desert, at war with Montezuma's revenge, caravan of off roading friends, take a few breathtaking photos along the way, once in a lifetime trip you will definitely be doing again
Nostalgia: Finally meeting friend’s baby for the first time, no destination in mind as long as you visit your friends that have moved away, spend all day at the closest theme park, the whole car singing to the Pitch Perfect soundtrack, traffic, a red Prius, pick up friends along the way, broke a shoe strap and had to wait for friends to buy you the cheapest shoes the could quickly find, AirBnB some nights and friend’s couches the rest, finding bits of home in new cities and in old friends
Romantic: Paris to Berlin through Belgium and Netherlands, watching couples walk hand in hand, Royal Palace of Brussels tour, sleeping in until noon, myself and my significant other, fast roads followed by quaint roads, small Citroen C4 Picasso, forgot the word for ‘toilet’ in German, old hotels, street cafes after dark
Conservation: Dirt roads, modified Range Rover, local hotels, Madagascar Safari, lemur tries to seal your hairband, Kirindy Reserve, volunteer group, wave to locals as they wave to you, stargazing at night between the reserve’s trees, such an abundance of life
Work Trip: Late for meeting with business reps, Han River at noon, rental sedan, shopping in Hongdae, Seoul to Busan, South Korea and back, work partner and boss, whatever hotel the company booked, country roads two lanes wide and beautiful, large company dinner of Korean Beef and more soju than anyone should drink, close friend surprises you by showing up unannounced at your hotel
Conde Nast: Family trip, day trips around Florence, pasta making class from a famous culinary school, Palazzo Vecchio, Fourfor, cobblestone alleyways, five star hotel in the middle of the city, someone spilt wine all over your new white shirt, meet up with Grandma’s long lost cousins, a few recipes and a few memories
Classic: Route 66 American Cross-Country Highway, novelty motels, conversations outside small town diners, Chicago to LA, Grandpa used to have a car like this, 1957 Studebaker President Classic, whitewall tires and long cruises, flat tire in the middle of Oklahoma, Petrified Forest National Park, black asphalt
Timeless: Just me and my best friend, 75 Mile Beach, Fraser Island, Australia; meeting new people while sharing campfires, driving on the beach, watching the sunrise over the turquoise water, Maheno Shipwreck, Volkswagen Westfalia Campervan, back wheels got stuck in dry sand and someone with a front winch had to help, sleeping bags in the back, sun kissed skin and summer freckles
Geeked Out: Hogwarts Express, Edinburgh and Glasgow, selfies outside Fort William, tour bus, group of nerd friends, train rides when possible, phone ran out of battery while hiking in the Highlands, happen to run into a man that helped on the Harry Potter set, tourist friendly inns, cramming in all the places you’ve ever seen in film

This summer is a special one for me, because last summer I was in hospital for most of it and spent the rest of it on steroids and a host of there medications, swollen like a blowfish, and getting better. I am still in the course of treatment, but a long way away from where I was last year, feeling much, much, MUCH better, and planning to live every freaking moment of the summer and beyond. I am not a huge fan of the summer, the heat on my skin, the humidity; Britain has the most humid summers… but I vividly remember myself last year hoping and praying that if I make it out I would live that cliche of living my best life. And I’m trying y’all, I really am.
This summer has been glorious, actual sunshine and heat, hotter than an Indian summer if you’ll believe that and come the first of August we are counting down the days to Autumn zooming right past it to the thick of winter. By the end of August we are talking back to school and back to real life for parents and children and the grind of things. But we have now before then, so let’s plan to live the hell out of the summer and make some good memories that can keep us going till the next summer. As I type this, it is pouring down with rain outside my window, bang in the middle of this blazing summer we have torrential rain and thunder storms but I am not mad at the in the least, we need the rain, farmers need it for the soil to keep feeding us good food in season, we need the rain to clean all the humidity and gunk from the pollution the earth is suffering.
This list is a guideline, if you do one thing on it fabulous. Ten? Grand. All? Fantastic. the aim is to live your best life, (said in my best Oprah voice). So let’s get right on into it shall we?
1. Sleep In: August is heaven for everyone, everywhere, no school in session, family holidays, blissful commute into work because trains are not crowded…it is the perfect month to sleep in and catch up on the hours lost to sleeplessness, work and all nighters. Sleep in and get your energy right on balance, and catch up with your body and reacquaint yourself with her natural rhythm.
2. Let your body wake up naturally: see number 1. Get rid of your alarm clock and let your body wake up to the sound of birds and the rise of the sun. Even if it means going in late for work or missing our on the morning calls. Better still no calls until noon until the summer is over.
3. Read two books: something old and something new. For something old, if you have never read it, read Lucky Chances by Jackie Collins. For something new read an Italian Holiday; a book about four women getting away from the ish of their lives in London and holidaying in Italy. Bonus points; read my book. 😉
4. Have a Day-cation: binge watch some shows on Netflix and Amazon. A couple on Netflix: Luke Cage, Drug Lords, Chef, North & South; okay, more than a couple. Amazon: The Bold Type- I really like this show, it is set around three women working the fashion industry, publishing specifically, and yes the three girls can be annoying and atypical at times but it is a far cry from the Devil Wears Prada, which shows of this ilk tend to slant towards. My favourite character is the Editor In Chief. She’s cool and the type of person I would like to believe exists in the industry. Another show and one of Amazon’s best creation is Bosch- this is my absolute favourite show on Amazon, detective Hieronymous “Harry” Bosch, central character in the dark crime drama set in Los Angeles. Binge watch all four seasons in one day and thank me later.
5. Go to a music concert: I’ll admit I am not a huge fan of concerts, crowds make me anxious and the moment gets lost in the melee. Give me a couch and a big screen TV and I’m good, but its the summer and we are living it up so we are taking our fly selves to a concert, in the Park, or at the Albert Hall or maybe something more low key and free; the ever faithful underground busker… whatever floats your boat just go.
6. Plan a night in Paris: be impetuous, call your girlfriends or go SOLO for a night in Paris if you’re close enough.
7. Do something fun in Paris: a fancy meal at L’Orangerie @ George V perhaps, or afternoon tea @ Le Bristol. Go to a museum, forget the Louvre, D’Orsay is my favourite museum in all of Paris. Be a cliché and have expensive hot chocolate at Cafe de Flore. Walk around and marvel at the astounding beauty that is Jardin du Luxembourg; my favourite place to be in Paris.
8. Return from Paris: with pastries from Pierre Here and spend the evening drinking champagne before bed.
9. See a play in the west end: Its a shame that Baba Segi’s wives is not in theatres anymore, but there is always something on so scroll through timeout or art reviews, pick a small theatre, they normally have good plays and go see it, for the culture and for support. Or if you can get tickets, you should go see Hamilton. It is quite simply the greatest show on earth.
10. Go Clubbing: re-live your youth and party in heels that hurt, a dress that is too short, full face of makeup. Flirt with handsome men, exchange numbers for the night. Jump on the night bus home and stop by the kebab shop before you make it home at six in the morning.
11. Babysit your nieces, nephews and god-children: preferably not right after your wild night out in the club.
12. Throw a fabulous dinner party: for friends and catch up on the good times you had.
13. Get lost in London: it’s a beautiful city to get lost in and no matter how many times you roam it, every corner is a surprise.
14. Picnic in the Park: Hyde Park is so beautiful, so vast, so lovely all year round but nothing beats it in the summer. Grab a picnic basket, bottle of chilled champagne, meats and cheeses, fat strawberries and cream, salads and go chill in the park with your bestest
15. Call an old friend: we all have that one friend we have lost touch with, call them up, check in with an old relative, see how they are doing, and say a prayer for the world.
16. Clean your skirting boards: as a matter of fact, clean the whole house, organise your closet and take excess to charity or give them out to family or friends who want them. Live light and let light in.
17. Organise your christmas holiday plans: have a white Christmas or escape somewhere tropical. Do something fun and unusual this time.
18. Get your low maintenance beauty routine on point: the summer is no time to bother with too much make-up because the humidity will not let you be beautiful and great so fine-tune your best make up, no make up look that won’t be a victim of the humidity. Paint your nails, scrub your feet and moisturise them. I love this foot cream, from Burt’s Bees, 100% moisture all day. Don’t be ashy this summer.
19. Plan your wardrobe ahead: make this the summer you wear the prettiest dresses. If you can, and I know you can, plan all the dresses for the 31 days in August.
20. Spend some time being alone: check yourself into a hotel or stay indoors, order room service, go dine out alone or cook yourself a home-cooked meal… do something for you and all about you, get to know yourself better and enjoy being in your company.
21. Spend time with family: I have an awesome family and we are all scattered around the world but in each other’s lives through phone, texts etc. When you can, drop by your parents’, call your brother, sisters, aunts, uncles… get the barbecue going and enjoy being in the company of loved ones.
22. Go to a quiz night at your local… I know, I know but try it its so much fun
23. Spend a Monday by the sea: away from work and the hustle of every day life
24. Write a short story: it can be about anything you want at all, just carve out sometime and put words down to paper.
25. Take a leap of faith: If its a bad decision, learn from it and move on. Enjoy the rewards of a good decision, pay it forward pass on the good feeling
26. Take a day trip outside of London: a summer’s day punting on River Cam, taking a literary tour of Oxford, or walking the bucolic lanes of the Cotswolds… do something that takes you out of the big smoke.
27. Take a digital detox: nowadays, a lot of things on social media make me so damn mad and I find myself engaging with crazy people but I have cut back on my time online and it has done me a world of good. Social media is both good and dangerous for you, find sometime to be ignorant of the shit that can sometimes go down on there.
28. Go to bed late, wake up later.
29. Eat dessert as a whole meal.
30. Fall in love with your life all over again: Be intentional about this and make sure you love your life. We are all going through things, the world is a shitty place to be sometimes these days but here is the thing; you only have you at night when you look yourself in the mirror. Be intentional with loving yourself. Please.
31. Take it all in: Take care of yourself. Check your breasts, drink lots of water, eat well, eat in season, moisturise at night, exercise however you can, limit your meat consumption, use sunscreen, my sister, use sunscreen.
To the summer of our lives.
31 Days of Summer This summer is a special one for me, because last summer I was in hospital for most of it and spent the rest of it on steroids and a host of there medications, swollen like a blowfish, and getting better.
