jatp fanworks appreciation - day 1 (writers)

motivation - so in true me fashion and my aversion to brevity, i've made three (3) posts (see also artists, gifs/edits) to celebrate the wonderful people in this fandom who have made my jatp tumblr experience what it is; a community of people who simply shout into the void about their love of a ghost band and their fearless female leader. i've enjoyed simply being on the sidelines admiring everyone's love for the show, but i thought this would be a good time to really show my appreciation for all these wonderful people, because if i've learned anything from this pandemic, it's that there is NEVER a wrong time to tell someone that they are simply ✨the best✨.

disclaimer: i don't interact with most of these people personally and i simply absorb their content from afar and scream about how wonderful they are in the tags.

This list kind of became a fic rec, so if you're looking for some wonderful fics to read (or reread), I've also included my favs from the author here as well.

Okay this is gonna get a little long so please bear with me. But I just wanted to preamble this by saying that the fanfiction written by the jatp fandom is what resparked my love for reading fiction after about 3-4 years of not reading for leisure (be an adult they said. it'll be fun they said.). So I'm really grateful for that? I don't interact with a lot of people, just because it makes me a little anxious, but I will constantly yell about your content in the tags as if I were on a set of bleachers with a megaphone.

I also know there are so many wonderful fic writers out there (on Tumblr and not on Tumblr) that make amazing pieces of work, and this is just a tiny peek into that, and is not at all conclusive.

Without further ado here are some writers who live rent free in my head, in alphabetical order, so feel free to just skip to your name to avoid my rambling:

@bluefirewrites -> your Merry Ex-Mas fic had me on the edge of my seat every single time you updated. I am so in love with how you wrote the characters into this and at how many words you churned out for this fic. This was filled with so much adventure, and it was really welcome during a time when the world wasn't allowed to travel. And I simply love all the other drabbles and fics you write, but I especially enjoy the hilarity of Ray Molina, Crime Scene Photographer and Matchmaker.

@captainkippen -> I'm pretty sure Love Drunk was one of the first fics I ever read in this fandom. Your stories and your writing feel so goddamn real and I find myself so immersed in the worlds that you've created. I have reread most of your jatp fics and I still manage to find myself stupidly grinning at my phone each time. Your stories flow so easily and are such perfect characterizations of the characters we know from the show, but elevated to fit into your verse. I cannot say enough how wonderful your writing is and how talented you are!! (also a slight nudge that I am still very much following along with The Key and the Crown and I hope you continue it!)

@catty-words -> Your???? Exhaustive??? Music??? Lists???? The amount of work and dedication and microanalyzing that you put into pulling out every detail from each scene is so admirable. You not only manage to find the details, but you also give us EVIDENCE via your intricately selected gifs. You could've just put the video of the performance, but no, you take your time to find that specific 1 second shot to emphasize your point. And your little fics that you sometimes throw out into the world? They're so beautiful, and so fun to read and I enjoy them so much! (I am STILL screaming about this band's a snack) Thank you for validating my yelling in the tags, and for feeding my hyperfixation to this show. (I'm sad these lists are ending soon, but it's about the journey ya know?)

@lydias--stiles -> I don't even know what to say here because I've yelled so much about your fics that I feel like there's really nothing else to yell. Your Road Trip AU was also one of the first ones I read in this fandom, and really just made me go absolutely feral. Pretty sure I absorbed the rest of your fics in an ungodly amount of time and I just simply think you are incredibly skilled and talented. Every time you post a new fic I always wonder what it's like to be in your head because the ideas you come up with are so unique and so well thought out. Thank you for all the art you create for this show, I will constantly be in awe of you. (Special shoutout to the 5+1 fic that became a 31 chapter monster)

@pearlcaddy -> This list would not be complete if I didn't mention you. First of all, thank you for suggesting this wonderful week, it has been so lovely to see so much love being spread around today. Secondly, I never thought I'd find myself reading a Buffy or a Wizarding World crossover fic, considering I know nothing about those two things. And yet I found myself on various nights after work at 3 in the morning just silently screaming and/or crying into my phone. Your writing is so insane. Your world building is so insane. Your banter/dialogue is insane. The way you capture the love between Julie/Luke in different universes is so perfect. Thank you for gifting us these beautiful pieces of art, and I hope you know that you have at least made one person (me) a very happy reader. I also really admire your dedication to "this will only be a oneshot", only to write like 4 other POVs for it. (Special shoutout to 100 Bad Days)

@ruzek-halstead -> Literally every single fic you have written lives rent free in my head. The way you've managed to build this universe of different Julies and Lukes, and each one still captures the essence of them is astounding. You've extended their characters beyond what we know from the show and I am just in awe of everything you write. Please know that dead of night is both triggering to me and yet the most hilarious thing I have read. (Special shoutout to the Fake Dating Christmas AU and of course the Cinderella Story AU)

@serendipitee -> Your stories and your writing are absolutely magical. I think Write It Down was one of the first multi-chapter fics that I followed super closely and whenever you updated, I would literally drop what I was doing and read it instantly. You have such a way of building the plot and the characters for all of your fics and drabbles, and making the reader just want more. Please know that I am so obsessed with Oh, She Waltzed With the Dead and I cannot wait to see where you take the story!

@sunsetcurbed -> I have no words for your writing. I am simply in awe every time I read something from you. The way you've got down Alex and Willie's voice to a tee is so crazy good. You write their characters and their stories with such grace and care, especially with how you approach the topic of mental health. Thank you for all the research you do and for also writing in your own experiences. I literally binged the Princes Diaries AU during work and lost a good half day to it, and I regret nothing because that fic left me in SHAMBLES. I secretly adore the way you say you're going to keep a fic short, and end up writing an insane amount of words for it. (I have not yet left my obligated long-ass comment on Chapter 4 of the College AU yet because I am still processing the fate/destiny concept.)

@tangledstarlight -> Gahh. Rosie. Please. This is going to sound a little repetitive considering I just screamed at you last night, but now I guess I will just have to publicly confess my adoration for you!!! Thank you for being my first online friend in a very long time, and for putting up with me yelling at you about everything (and also nothing at the same time). I can't believe all it took was one message about your Royals AU for you to post it, but I will gladly take that credit any day. You are so so so incredibly talented with your writing, and your ability to transport me to another world while I read your fics is unparalleled. I adore the way you can come up with a new story to write every day, and then proceed to throw it into your pot of other WIPs. I am so so so so lucky to have gotten to know you and am incredibly grateful that I now have someone to cry about everything with 🧡 (If you read anything from Rosie, you need to read her Seasons/Long Distance Juke "friendship" fic and the Reggie x Photography oneshot that made me bawl my eyes out.)

@thedeathdeelers -> No thoughts. Just soulmates. Jk jk, you know I love your Reggie x Ray x Carlos fics, and I will scream in the tags about it until the day I get more of those fics from you. This is lowkey a threat, but wrapped in kindness. You are so wonderful to see on my dash (albeit scary at times because of the sheer amount of headcanons and theories running through your head), but you radiate such positive energy that it's impossible to not want to jump in and scream about soulmates with you.

Some special mentions to fics that also live rent free in my head:

@sunsetsandcurves wrote a Willex Cruise Ship AU inspired by a Simple Plan song and it’s something I never knew I needed until I read it.

@phantom-curve wrote a Juke fic based off of Coney Island and I would just like to say, yes, it did shatter me. (Here’s the fluff sequel that makes up for it though)

@unsaidjulie wrote the Juke dog fic of my dreams and I simply cannot express how much I want the Molina’s to have a dog now.

@pawprinterfanfic managed to get me incredibly invested in a Star Wars AU even though I know absolutely nothing about Star Wars. I just know that I would die for two (2) space boys.

@sanssssastark your Later universe made me realize that I do very much want there to be more mature content for this fandom (and you constantly deliver).

@theobligatedklutz wrote a Tangled Willex AU that makes me screech every time there’s an update. Just read it.

@alexthedrummerboy your talent knows no bounds when it comes to your Social Media AU. Also she’s written ORIGINAL songs for Alex and Willie?!?!?!

@gennified has this really wonderful modern take on pride and prejudice for Willex and I’m so obsessed with how much miscommunication there is.

@bananaleaves okay, I just found your Tumblr today, and I know you don’t know me in any capacity, but allow me to scream about THIS FIC RIGHT HERE. If anyone in this fandom is to read ANYTHING, it’s this fic. This was one of the best things I’ve read in a long time and absolutely wrecked me. Please just read this.

This turned out WAY longer than it was supposed to, and I’m SO SORRY. (I also tried to make sure I got everyone’s pronouns right, so PLEASE let me know if they’re wrong!) A final sincere thank you to everyone in this fandom who writes. Your talent knows no bounds. Gonna stop talking now before this becomes an essay....

i always had many tiny crushes, but never quite on celebrities... instead on characters from movies, cartoons/anime, books, comics, you name it! mostly temporary things that would quickly be replaced by my newest obsession soon.

but a few of those have always stuck with me:

hiii! ^_^ hi hi hi i’m the one who sent the moonjo asks and i’m coming off anon hihi. gahh i really must say that besides having a pretty writing style, you also seem super kind ówò and you see— i can’t get moonjo out of my mind at all. [SHRIEKS.] i flipped the internet upside down looking for moonjo fics, or lee dongwook in general orz I’M STARVED. can you please feed me some moonjo breadcrumbs? [pleading eyes intensifies.] hmm, is it okay if i share my ideas? ahh, this is gonna have a little dark theme undertones, tho... i was thinking about a scenario where the reader is the girlfriend of moonjo the dentist™ and well, she hasn’t known about his homicidal side at all. OKAY SO WHAT IF one night while walking down the street she encounters moonjo when she’s not supposed to? like when he’s... in action and everything is simply bloody. she couldn’t believe that it’s her sweet and charismatic lover at first, it makes her shaken up and very anxious. but rather than distancing herself from him or maybe like calling the police on him and all— she scrambles to help clean up and do anything for him so he’d stay out of trouble, even though there are tears welling up in her eyes and moonjo can’t miss the way her hands violently shakes, she’s just so infatuated with him and sees the good in him! and then he’d just pause for a moment, gazing at her thoughtfully before cracking his trademark smile and muttering something along the line of, “you’re quite special, you know?” maybe it could SOMEHOW end in fluff tho? :< imagine this tall, big man wrapping his arms around his darling as she trembles in his embrace and shushing her with gentle words like, “it’s okay, jagiya, i got you.” AND I’M SORRY THAT I’VE RAMBLED TOO MUCH— [BOWS DEEPLY.]

Pt 2: HELP i meant to say, “you’re quite peculiar, you know?” instead of “special” but i just remembered him saying about what he said to jongwoo, “i’ll turn you special” or something like that and BOY DID THAT MAKE ME GO [HEART EYES.] like he finds the reader fascinating for being different than most? who’d obviously freak out and try to run away from him. aksjsj i’m sorry for sending so much asks in a row, but i wanted to do this just to clear things up because i realised it can sound somewhat confusing!!

Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag!

Sooo… I saw a few of my favourite booktubers do this tag, and I really wanted to do it, too. So have another edition of “videos that I would make and upload to Youtube if I wasn’t too shy, so you’ll get a written version instead”. Haha!

1. The Best Book of the Year So Far

Obviously, it’s super mean to start with this one, because… hello?? Only one favourite? Only ONE? When I’ve read sooo many brilliant books this year?!

But alright. I think I’m going to have to go with… *drum roll*… RADIO SILENCE by Alice Oseman. It was the first book this year where I REALLY connected with the characters, so much that I wanted to write fanfiction about them. And many scenes just made me… so happy? So yeah, I choose this one as my fave. Honourable mentions, though, include: WE ARE OKAY by Nina LaCour. And STARFISH by Akemi Dawn Bowman.

2. Best Sequel of the Year So Far

Hah. I hardly ever read series, soo…? :D I’ll pick CROOKED KINGDOM by Leigh Bardugo, and it was really good, and a very strong sequel in my opinion! But I also read very few sequels this year.

3. A New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To

I’m honestly not super up to date with new releases. Or rather, my reading interests are fairly narrow, so I don’t really care that much about a book being new, I just care about it fitting my interests. A fairly new release that I have some interest, though, is THE FLATSHARE by Beth O’Leary. But I don’t usually read romance, so I’m still not sure.

4. Most Anticipated Release for Autumn/Winter

Oh, finally, this one’s easy! NINTH HOUSE by Leigh Bardugo!! So excited!

5. Your Biggest Disappointment of the Year So Far

Hahhh… Pretty sure that would be THE BASIC EIGHT by Daniel Handler. I was very excited for it and ended up hating it? Lol

6. Your Biggest Surprise of the Year So Far

Probably SIX OF CROWS by Leigh Bardugo. There was so much hype around it, and it didn’t sound like my kind of thing at all, because I don’t really like fantasy, neither YA nor adult. But I bought the audio book and ended up really enjoying it! :)

7. New Favourite Author

Gahh, this is hard again! I’m going to go with Alice Oseman, but Nina LaCour is a strong second! I’m excited to read more by both of them. <3

8. Your Newest Favourite Character

Probably Frances Janvier from RADIO SILENCE. But Aled Last is a close second. And I also really loved Kiko Himura from STARFISH.

9. Your Newest Fictional Crush

Hate to be boring, but… I rarely get fictional crushed anymore. And I’ve been reading more YA this year, and I definitely won’t ever have a crush on a teenage character, sooo… no crushed. Sorry.

10. A Book that Has Made You Cry

There were several. But the one that really, really made me sob ugly tears was WE ARE OKAY by Nina LaCour! There was one particular scene that was just SO emotional! (Oh, and THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by Taylor Jenkins Reed was another one. Also DAISY JONES AND THE SIX, also by her. Oh, and CROOKED KINGDOM of course. Those who know, know.)

11. A Book That Has Made You Happy

Thankfully, also several. But the sweetest by far was HEARTSTOPPER by Alice Oseman! I had all the fluffy, happy feels! <3

12. The Most Beautiful Book of the Year So Far

Well, I reread THE LIKENESS by Tana French this year and it’s the most beautiful book in the world, so… that one. Haha! <3

13. Some Books You Need to Read Before 2019 Ends

Umm… so many? But definitely NINTH HOUSE. Also preferably more Alice Oseman, like I WAS BORN FOR THIS. I’d also love to read SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson, either the original or the graphic novel. And on my physical TBR (i.e. on my shelf) are (amongst others) WHISTLE IN THE DARK by Emma Healey and YOU KNOW ME WELL by David Levithan and Nina LaCour, that I want to get to. And EVERY LAST WORD by Tamara Ireland Stone.

I tend to just put on youtube and see what it spits out at me. 2.) What color scheme would you want your book cover to have? Hmm..perhaps blue and silver. 3.) Which one of your characters do you relate most closely to? I’d say Teresa, my main character’s best friend. 4.) Do you prefer writing lighter scenes or darker ones? Medium. 5.) Favorite drink and snack to write with? I’m going to be boring here and just say water. Snack might be oreos :P 6.) Who is the author that most inspires you to write? JK Rowling and John Green 7.) If you were to meet said author on a scale of 1-10 how much of a fangirl would you be? 25 hahaha 8.) Writing in the night or day?

Though I’m working to get my book farther away from Twilight as it is right now.

1. What animal would be cutest if scaled down to the size of a cat?

Pitbull! I love them anyway, but it would be awesome to have a cute little one!

2. What weird food combinations do you really enjoy?

Dipping my french fries in my frosty, both from Wendy’s

3. Where would your dream holiday be?

I’ve always wanted to go to England, Ireland and Japan, so if there was anyway to do it all, that would definitely be a dream come true!

4. What sound do you love?

This is gonna sound odd, but I love my bulldog’s snore. It ranges from log sawing to high pitched and cute.

5. If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?

GAHH!!!! Too many to choose from! My first gut reaction for some odd reason was a fem. Sherlock. It was the very first thing to pop in my head followed by Batman (or really Batgirl I guess)

6. Do you collect anything?

Not really, I don’t have a lot of space in my house right now, so I try to get only things I REALLY want or need. If/When I get more room and start reading them more, I’ll probably end up collecting mangas.

7. If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?

I would love to meet Jared and Jensen from Supernatural. They seem like such awesome guys and it would just be so cool to meet them.

8. What ice-cream flavours do you love/hate?

Love: my mother-in-law’s homemade ice cream (seriously any flavor is amazing)

Hate: Usually things with nuts in it.

9. What is the best thing that has ever happened to you?

Again, here’s my sappy self, realizing I was in love with my husband (when we were dating) and knowing I’d finally found my “one”.

10. What does your name mean to you? Your real name.

Truthfully, it’s just my name lol. There’s no super deep meaning attached to it for me.

Was tagged by Feadae. Here we go relationship status: Single. favorite color: Probably a tie between Green, dark blues, grey, and purple. lipstick or chapstick: Chapstick. last song i listened to: Run Runaway by Great Big Sea. last movie i watched: Atlantis the Lost Empire. top 3 tv shows: This is tough. In no particular order....uh....let me think. Shows, shows. Uh....let me think. In no particular order, Gravity Falls. Spice and Wolf. And..........Galavant? Galavant is a pretty awesome show. That series of Unfortunate Events Show is pretty sweet. Psych? Batman TAS? This is a very difficult question...I’m probably forgetting some good ones that are equally great...gahh ! top 3 bands/musical artists: this one is a bit easier. Silly Wizard, Owain Phyfe (and by extension the New World Renaissance Band) and Great Big Sea. Among many others like Stan Rogers and Loreena McKennitt. top 3 characters: Damn it! Yet again you present difficulties for me. Following Feadae’s example I’m going to exclude Fictionalized Historical figures (looking at you CotIG). With that said, 1. Rose Dyson from CotIG. 2. Feste from Twelfth Night. And.....damn it who’d be a third? I suppose Holo from Spice and Wolf. Wit is just about always an admirable trait in a character. Almost went with Discworld Death...but.... What I’m Reading Currently: for class a whole lot of stuff relating to Democracy and stuff. For fun...going back and forth between A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (want to see Hank again), A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline Le’Engle?(have to finish it before that new movie comes out), and Guards!Guards! by Terry Pratchett. what is the one thing you want to accomplish this year? Graduation...that’s it really. who is your greatest role model? No idea. if you could live anywhere where would you live? He’ll if I know. Nothing too busy, nothing too rural. Hopefully a place with several bookshops and Antique stores to pick from. Some place with Theatres, both of the Cinematic and Stage variety. Hopefully at least one Candy Shop. Walla Walla was I nice place during the time I lived there. Maybe Walla Walla? Might try one of the big cities but those would probably be akin to Hell...far too busy... Ashland is an overall nice place...I rightly don’t know the exact where. But if it had those qualifiers ....that would be a major plus. No clue how to tag people still...so...Sock, Frosty, kittetzin, and whoever else would care to.
