some onions bout the bnha manga since im reading it in jp nao

the more i read of bnha the more i realise. i kind of fucking hate this series. it’s got all the ingredients of the classic old big 3. brilliant art, a cool character here or there (sometimes), bursts of muddled clunky progression but a cool fight to soothe the pacing and the mostly frustrating boring uninteresting pussy story choices! the sloppy sort of toothless writing only shounen jump editors can give me. it really truly reminds me of how i felt reading bleach .. but it hasnt got the same charm to make me forgive it. the artist is really really talented though absolutely adore some layouts especially when handguy is included and we get some cool reaching illustrations. he and his team are commendable for making such polished work week in week out and its genuinely so fun to read from an art perspective and i really like the fact he leans very heavily into a much looser style that makes everything stretch in a satisfying way as if its designed for animation despite being so complex in its illustration.

its one of those series that is painfully mediocre shounen and you can immediately tell that by the fact that even in this hammy nonserious plot, somehow, the female characters still get completely fucking shafted as excpected. they literally do almost fuck all and the big three characters that get the most development and are considered in-universe ‘main characters’ all happen to be male despite the entire main cast supposedly being the absolute best of the best at the best of this top superhero school.

yaomomo is probably one of the most egregious examples. a character whos top of the class, who got in on recommendations (just like the other deuteragonist) with only three other students making the cut and her big character conflict was that she for some reason, felt inferior to todoroki shouto, whose initial character arc revolves around the fact that ‘he’s not trying his best’. it’s notable that todoroki is never considered to be some freak of nature genius in the same way other characters, he’s impressive but there are stronger. but for some reason, his superiority over yaomomo is pivotal to her character. she doubts her own decision making skills compared to his due to losing so badly at the sports festival against fumikage.

now lets see here: this fucking emotionally constipated idiot who is noted in writing to not using his full potential since he has no motivation to actually win, handicapping his own abilities for most of the time due to crippling personal issues, who ALSO completely jobbed at the festival and gave up at the last match against bakugou and suffered a humiliating defeat because he lacks shame and conviction and who ALSO got in on recommendations? todoroki is an interesting character in his own right, hes strong but his flaws are glaringly evident and interesting. but for some reason he gets elevated to this position of being yaomomo’s ‘wall’.

hes not a team player, yes hes notably perceptive but to position the realtionship between momo and him like this it feels like such a pointless angle to work in cause its so antithetical to yaomomos whole characterisation and contradicts her entire background for .. what? shes got such a strong natural-leader type personality or she is attempting to have one despite the author somehow forgetting. yes she’s nervous and panics sometimes, but i think her entire character arc is intended for her to overcome this as the main crux. there is no doubt that yaomomo is strong. she is excellent as a leader, works extremely well in a team, has a level head and every single time we see her the author always brings it back round to the fact she is an excellent strategist and everyone looks to her to make a tactical decision. almost like her entire character revolves around leadership and self-confidence.

but compared to how shes portrayed against a ‘tactician’ like midoriya for example you would literally never guess that about her unless they didnt spoonfeed it to you that yes, this character is supposed to be smart sorry we keep making her look inept despite her entire character skill and ability being completely and utterly centred around this main concept teehee.

even compared to yoarashi (who i love), who also got in on recommendations, she doesnt get the same level of merit in the fiction. shes never truly made out to be a big deal in the same way the others are which not only fucking blows but makes the story more and more of a grating power up treadmill like a classic shounen jump manga without any of the charm or love. interesting characters like yaomomo who have clear visions are easily pushed aside and their traits sidelined to put more emphasis on other characters.

plus when she does get to make a big decision the narrrative acts like ‘oh was it even the right choice?! did we even make it worse!???’ which would be an interesting introspection for the headstrong characters who jump straight into shit, a reprieve from the individual bullshittery they can pull off without consequence but even though we set this character up specifically to make the right tactical decision in a pinch were not even gonna give her that satisfaction of being a HERO in this situation in this hammy feel-good plot cause thats reserved for the cool main character. its truly fucking unbearable. in the next few panels the main big trio of strong characters are making thoughtless decisions left right and centre with no hesitation or comment from the narrative with no internal struggle but here we are .. at what should be the culmination of a character arc that just .. falls fucking flat. for one of the bigger characters in the supporting cast of the series.... man the writing is just so poor.

you could say that trying to set up some linear character development where ‘girl is strong > gets confidence shaken > confidence comes back’ struggle contrasting against her ojou-sama calm and secretly playful demeanour is meant to be interesting and give her depth but honestly its just played straight in the most truly boring way but its ok! todoroki said keep your chin up queen and shes fine now. hes gonna go save aizawa-sensei with no input, no plan and be a hero because being hero is just about being the main character! everyone else can fuck off. she really needed that validation since she most likely will not have her own achievements, being recognised by this moron is her progression as a character despite her own character arc being infinitely more interesting and nuanced.

i do not expect a lot from a shounen manga sir, i came in with middling expectations and to look at some cool art whilst i awkwardly practice my japanese and yet. here we fucking are. i keep reading this hoping we get some comeuppance or some result but man. i feel like bnha is actually one of the series i wont bother keeping up with at all. the practice was really good! dont get me wrong its a great light read but im honestly surprised at how skewed the actual story is compared to fanworks. i just wanted some easy jp practice but i became weirdly invested in this probably cause i have a huge bias with cool character designs and the anime production was so ambitious.

o yea and one other thing. with tsu, ochako and nejire being introduced as going on the hassaikai raid but then completely sidelined at the first boss, essentially being relegated to being the mob charas that fits the thematic needs of that one random villain character it was sooo fucking lame. it really felt like the midboss had more thematic weight than these three girls first big fight. they were truly only there to fit the ‘lust’ theme they couldve been replaced by anyone else with tits.

in that arc too, midoriya definitely stepped on my toes the most since he took up moments that i thought would be more meaningful and appropriate with the other dot-eye dude that fell compleltey flat with him, got to use possibly the coolest fucking villain as a beatstick meter to show idk he had even more of a god mode i guess sometimes thanks to taking eri into battle instead of ykno relying on the other UA students and also giving them time to shine rather than interspersing flashbacks and shit before every meaningful fight to show ‘hey look how much this character has grown’ in the most cop out sort of storytelling. jirou i think at least gets some life written into her with meeting her parents and the ua school festival arc showing her talents and passion but shes barely utilised too and hagakure is a literal noncharacter her gag is barely even included half the time. mina gets some characterisation but even then its in the form of through another male character, kirishima, and in both instances its like the two are fighting for the spotlight of relavance which is a shame cause theyre both cooooooooooooool aaaaaaaa. every single girl character just feels like an ‘add-on’ or an afterthought, even moreso than the already forgotten secondary cast of which the most interesting dynamics and characters libe (denki and fumikage are cool!).

plus one gripe is that literally 5 separate girl characters have the same “oho they have to take their clothes off for their quirk to work ohooohgoho! so nautghty guess it cant be helped” and that just makes me like. you fucking suck at this bro just be horny with your whole chest making them have a flimsy embarassed half-excuse to be horny is lame. if you wanna make horny characters just fucking do it! enough of this stupid preamble you have to shoehorn in to every character every fucking time. just make it slutty and move on. there’s no need to be so annoyingly coy about it. also UA is the best most prestigious hero course and the girls who are going to become the top pro heroes go to their internship and its a fkn beauty commercial and its like. if they were at least building towards some commentary that female pro heroes are treated less seriously than their male counterparts like with mt.ladys flirting and her immediate paparazzi who takes pics of her ass, or to show that to become popular it means some level of corporate gameplaying and fanservice, it could be something but theres literally zero effort to comment or build on it at all its literally just presented as is and played straight. this is what it means to be a girl hero. that’s all. no comment.

i feel like miruko was a half-hearted attempt to remedy the lack of girl heroes that are actually strong and not bg props but its like it just feels like its been written as they go along with no overarching theme, nothing being built on or anything to say and it just feels so unsatisfying to read. characters that are introduced regularly get used at beatsticks to show how strong they are and get obliterated soon after to serve to show how cool and totally serious this new villain is ykno??? its so fucking tired a really classically shit kind of pointless circling narrative, like nothing truly has any weight to it and everything is meaningless before one for alls almighty relevance and power and whatever the plot needs has suddenly always existed lol dont worry bout it bro it was totally always there heres a star wars reference!

imo outside of the mangas art, the best thing about bnha is the anime adaptation with the exception of season4. the concept of having a long running shounen but giving it ample time, and a higher ambition in terms of production value and having a just absolutely fucking solid staff really make the first three seasons of bnha anime. naturally the voice acting and sound is anime standard gold but the production cant be understated it pulls so much of the slack. the direction and pacing of the first three seasons is honestly really well done, it feels like stuff builds up with ample time and we get much more focus on the background characters even in simple ways like introducing new group shots etc that give them much needed characterisation. one of my fave episodes is s3e3 which gives us a feeling of actual life and interaction as the kids train hard and get to spend an evening together having a bbq and its honestly full of just like group shots, framing in a way that really truly makes it a believable group of good kids trying their best at summer camp and gives almost everyone some much needed screentime.

one thing i noted as well is that the anime really likes to drive home important emotional points for certain characters through some great character acting - like yaoyorozus pivotal fight with fumikage is barely a passing glance in the manga whereas the anime really captures her desperation and panic as she tries her absolute best to react to the situation, not giving up even as shes overpowered only to realise in horror shes already lost. theres so much more weight and time given to this match and tbh its annoying that something that is meant to be so pivotal is barely glossed over in the manga since its so important to her future character motivations. it feels like when these moments and the strength of the supporting characters is lacking, the main story beats become more and more blatantly repetitive. some of the best parts of the arc are the bakugo rescue plan but were always served a fresh bland helping of izuku midoriya being the main character over utilising the strengths of other characters in this pivotal situation. it’s not like theres any fear of giving other characters ‘origin’ chapters and handing over the reigns away from midoriya it just for some reason, the author chooses not to really bother fleshing out characters who dont have immediate plot relavance or not the main three which makes the whole cast weaker.

imo even the anime is suffering from the source materials holes and its own slightly shoddy choices in direction with season 4 for some reason deciding to faithfully adapt the awful pacing of the overhaul arc and faithfully make it as dry as possible and devoting a solid 6 episodes to the frankly lame school festival arc despite it clearly suffering for time in the first half. it also includes my new least favourite trope of cutting the sound design completely to a slow vocal track along with the most eye wateringly boring fight pacing it was literally like. sir i want to skip this. you are going to make me watch this stupid fight with the dude whos character motivations got explained to me three seconds ago? with a new power up for green boy? with no sound design so theres even less weight to this whole fucking fight? and youre not even going to let me listen to you say run? how fucking dare you do this to me. the anime adaptation cannot stand on its own two legs with the source material alone. it needs strong direction to patch up the holes or stellar animation to distract me since without either its truly a weak weak show.

i know i already talked about it but really wish overhaul and his whole arc was handled better since i felt like it had promise. the wild shift in tone as i was reading was actually pretty surprising and the whole premise reminds me of how fucking nutty and exciting the yorknew city arc in hxh was for that series. the possibility of building how the actual underworld functions, which is tantalisingly never truly talked about in a world of cartoony heroes and villains was interesting and i was ready to see what organised crime with fucking superpowers could bring to the table plus all the new characters really looked damn cool. but overhaul himself, despite his fucking amazing intro and his title of no.2 in the underworld after all for one was in like 12 chapters and the arc literally served to introduce a plot device then fuck off with all its characters immediately having no impact at all and not even utilising the introduced concepts of the yakuza, organised crime and drugs in the age of quirks in any fuckin way. the majority of development came from fucking flashbacks literally seconds before a fight and they were scarce with anything interesting. like SIR WHAT A WASTE I HAD FINALLY FOUND MY GRIMMJOW AGAINST THESE UNSEXY LoV LOSERS WITH NO CHARISMA AND YET everyone keeps telling me that it was just a weak arc and the others are better. but having read them i think its just emblematic of the sort of writing style which prioritises having cool ‘moments’ for its beloved main character over a a cool interesting solid story that produces amazing moments and has the insane shounen payoff that you expect.  

my closing thoughts are that its at least a solid manga to read whilst eating breakfast a solid 3/10 and probably higher if you like little broccoli boy and for some reason want him to win. which i dont. he has a terminal case of unlikable bland shounen mc syndrome and the worst thing is that he didnt used to be like that, he grew into it. his whole character is such a waste to me, turning him into the chosen special one with the greatest quirk is the most boring path possible for someone who had such a strong desire and conviction to be a hero. that we see building themselves up out of their own merit for most of the series and then suddenly giving him the power of more quirks fucking sucks. having such a ridiculous power and such a devastating payoff kept his fights interesting and i think the fight where eri allowed him to use it at full power with no drawbacks was such a fucking let down. there were better ways for him to grow other than idk more quirks cause hes special. and truly outside of attaining more power to become no.1 he has very little conflict in his character after someone else goes out of the way to instill confidence in him its also very annoying that repeatedly were shown how hard everyone works to get into ua, to become the heroes they want to be but its always dwarfed in comparison to izuku and the whole fucking scene with allmight at the end of the kamino incident being specifically for izuku, instead of a rallying cry that you are next, every one of you must struggle to become the hero that you want to be - to bear the weight of the symbol of peace is not for one persons shoulders alone like its a shame cause the series spends so much time hammering home how these kids are the best of the best, the ones who really truly want it but theyre not really treated with the same regard at all and their struggles and improvement are nowhere near on the monumental level of midoriya.

i feel like the narrative has all the makings of something interesting, but somehow fucking hilariously misses its own point. truly ripping apart the idea of becoming the greatest hero, the ‘symbol of peace’, that becoming a pillar isnt any way for a human to live and glorifying one persons sacrifice for all our sakes isnt right and that the true insiduous evil of hero society is that it makes us truly believe that people are painted in black and white rather than many shades of grey and forces people to take on things they shouldnt, allows certain powerful individuals to enforce their own wills on the world and robs everyday people, the powerless and weak of any agency of how their society works. it acts like heroism is an inherent trait only afforded by the strong and that being anything less than the ultimate hero is a failure even if it means doing awful tings, like throwing away your children giving them mental scars, leaving behind whole families in the name of heroism falling in the line of duty being seen as some great honour, leaving kids to wander the streets since doing necessary but painful things are for better equipped people, right? wash your hands of it and let a hero deal with it. honestly i just want to see a weak supporting characters heroism. that was the charm of early bnha. ive had enough of this blind thoughtless heroism thats presented as the correct one, for the chosen few. i want to see the struggle for it, insatiable longing that you cant help pushing you on, but most of all i want to see the hero you can be in ways that are meaningful but yours alone and taking back the world inch by inch from the common villainy of our society with one person at a time, reaching out to your hand no matter how scarred. to look your dreams in the face and turn your back on them. tearing down the sun, shattering it into a million pieces, but the small shards shine brighter and can be held in mortal hands. but nah izuku is going to be all might super cop 2 dont worry bout it guys. dw he’ll also choose some poor fucking kid to bear this burden after he becomes useless in battle and we can discard him as a person and simply keep him as an icon since the narrative keeps allowing the villains to have valid criticisms against society but always dismiss them since theyre villains you know and youre not meant to actually think about changing society despite your position of power, just enjoy being no.1 whilst your alive and rinse and repeat pog.

i think thats why i can easily see why bakugo and todoroki are so popular through the series as they do take a long time to get through their extremely shitty issues and they are genuinely shitty little teen psychopaths who are horrible fucking bastards. but they grow up and in really tangible gratifying ways. they seem to have as many setbacks as they do wins, constantly fucked over by their own hubris but still finding a way to power through despite it all trying to awkwardly form connections and become better people as well as better heroes and they can not do so on their own. their struggles are treated with gravity and they always acquire some kind of new strength in return but at a pace that doesnt put them miles ahead of their other classmates but definitely feels weighted and substantial to their development. todoroki gritting his teeth but slowly realising that he has a fucking ridiculous opportunity in his hands with endeavours agency and even inviting his friends is monumental in its own way, endeavour texting his son and his son texting back is like. it really does feel like something. its also interesting that as broccoli boy gets stronger he gets subsequently less and less likeable imo like ... sir you are NO shirou emiya. you do not have the range or the sheer trauma to be so dogged and blind in your ideals despite the world you occupy and everyone else around you. i was sold shirou emiya superhero manga with sexy juwabe sunichi teacher and only one of those thigns is true!!!

Ricky horror x Reader

That's it, you're dying.

You have never felt so bad in your entire life. You were fine yesterday, out living your best life, working on cars, giving your guys a hard time --- then bam! This morning you feel like death and you're fairly sure if you even smell food you're going to barf.

"Are you sure you're okay?"

"I'm fine," you wheeze from behind the bathroom door, your voice muffled and weak. "Go to work."

Ricky frowns where he stands in front of the kitchen sink, stirring the creamer into his coffee slowly. He's pretty sure Chloe gave you her virus, although she's apparently fine according to the doctor and is now spending the rest of the week with her mother. You, however, sound like you're suffering immensely.

You haven't eaten anything this morning, or had anything to drink, but you'd looked as pale as a ghost as you'd made a mad sprint for the bathroom five minutes ago and have yet to emerge. You sound terrible, if he's being honest, and he doesn't quite want to leave you by yourself. He had plans on going to the studio today for some recording, but he kind of hates to leave.

"Do you need anything?" He calls.

"No."

Huh.

Ricky sips his coffee. He could leave, give you your space to suffer alone, maybe that's what you prefer. He knows he feels that way, he'd rather suffer in silence and have some space to himself, but... well, he doesn't want you to get dehydrated. He could leave, get you some medicine, bring it back so you have it. Maybe get some Gatorade or something, electrolytes right?

"I'm heading out, I can grab you some med ---."

"Just go!"

Okay, yep, he's leaving, you definitely do not want him around. He hastily grabs his coffee, making a quick dash for the door and locking it behind him before he starts down the narrow steps. He glances through the paned glass of the office into the garage, seeing two of your guys already inside and getting things ready for the morning.

"(Y/N)'s sick, she probably won't be down today," Ricky says as he exits the office, shutting the door firmly behind him. Should he really leave you alone, not at your best with these men working on cars? "You guys got the shop, right?"

"Yeah." One of your guys says after a moment, eyeballing Ricky. They're still not too sure about him, showing up out of nowhere marrying their boss and moving in so quick like that. He doesn't talk to them much, he always looks uncomfortable, which makes him suspicious. "She good?"

"Stomach bug is all." Ricky shrugs his shoulders. "She should be fine."

He'll bring you some medicine back, ensure that you eat/drink what you can. He sort of feels bad that Chloe is the one who gave it to you, her mother should have picked her up from school instead. He has to do something to help you feel better.

You: Not since you texted me an hour ago no

Ricky: I just feel bad since Chloe made you sick

You: I would've wound up sick anyway dont worry about it

Ricky: Are you drinking anything? Keep hydrated

You: k

Oh geez.

"She just k'd me," He says dismally as he sits on the sofa beside Ryan, who has his guitar resting in his lap at an angle as he tries to perfect the placement of his fingers. "Do you think she's alright?"

"I mean, your kid gave her the stomach virus from hell, I don't think she feels too good." Ryan replies after a moment, cutting his eyes at Ricky beneath long black lashes. "Plus you're bugging her. Let her have some rest, I'm sure she needs it."

"Is Ricky in the doghouse already?" Vinny asks where he sits across from them, the table separating the two couches in the studio. He's absently tapping his drumsticks against his thighs, playing out the beat in his head as they wait for Chris to stop recording in the studio. "Like you've barely been married a month, dude, that must be a record."

"I'm not in the doghouse," Ricky grumbles, clicking his phone screen dark. Chloe hugging him around the neck is his background, her matching eyes bright and cheeks glowing pink. It's one of his favorite photos of them, which reminds him --- he needs to text her mom and check on her too.

He's surrounded by sick women.

"Well, you'll probably be snoozing on the couch tonight if you got her sick," Vinny replies, shrugging his thin shoulders. "Bring her back some stuff when you go home. Her favorites, just no hot food that'll upset her more."

Yeah, nothing scented.

"Is she pregnant?" Ghost asks, his head slowly appearing from behind Vinny where he'd been trying to take a nap on the floor adjacent to the couch; he had a long flight, any sleep, no matter the location, is appreciated. "Like, you're sure she's not carrying another Olson?"

"I'm sure," Ricky rolls his eyes, feeling the heat crawling up his neck; the guys have no idea the two of you haven't slept together, and probably never will. It's not the kind of marriage that's... normal, by any means. He just hopes that it works out, since his court date is at the end of the week, and he's done so much to get this far. It'll have to be enough to get him fair custody of his kid, Claire can't use the excuse of an unstable home life anymore.

He's a musician, but he's not a bad father.

Ghost frowns, slowly disappearing from sight to return to his nap.

"Maybe I'll get her some egg drop soup, that should help, right? It's mostly broth." Ricky says thoughtfully, trying to think how to help. "She loves Italian, but that's not going to help her right now. Man, I feel so bad. She had to pick Chloe up from school and take care of her, and this is what she gets for it."

"The fact she picked her up and didn't bitch about it is good," Vinny offers with a shrug of his shoulders. "I mean, she's just her stepmom. Why couldn't your ex get her?"

"She couldn't get off work. She sent her boyfriend but (Y/N) already had her at that point, and I don't want that guy going to our place." Ricky huffs; he doesn't even want Claire's boyfriend knowing where they live. He doesn't realize he says "our" place rather then "your" place, but Ryan cuts his eyes at him again, his fingers pausing on his guitar strings. "I wouldn't feel comfortable with him being able to stop by whenever he wants. I mean, there's always people at the shop working, but still."

"Is it weird being married to someone who knows more about cars than you? You're the dude, you're supposed to know this stuff." Vinny asks curiously.

"Not really. I know more about music than her, makes no difference. I know how to change a tire now," Ricky shrugs, a little embarrassed. You actually took the time to make sure he knows how to do it so he's not stuck again, you sort of guilted him by stating he should know how, what if he has Chloe with him and a tire goes? "So it's fine."

Vinny drops it, turning his attention to his phone as he leans back into the cushions. A few minutes later he heads into the studio when Chris yells for him, the lead singer trying to perfect everything for the new song.

"So how are things?" Ryan asks after a moment, brushing black hair out of his eyes. Ricky hasn't come over in a bit, not since he picked up his last box of things. He used to stay over pretty frequently, he didn't stay every night at your place, considering it's just a sham and he doesn't like the mattress in your spare room. "Does it seem like smooth sailing?"

"I guess," Ricky sighs, rubbing his weary eyes. "We're getting along just fine, I think we're going to be good. ��Her and Chloe get along fantastic."

"They always have, but she's been in Chloe's life for as long as she can remember. It's not like you brought a complete stranger in."

"Yeah. I just hate... that, well, all this, has affected (Y/N) so much," Ricky grumbles, still aware of Ghost napping behind the sofa. He doesn't want to say too much and give anything away, but it's been a while since him and Ryan have been able to talk.

"You married her, you knew it would change everything. Marriage isn't something you can pretend didn't happen."

"I know." Ricky is aware of all of this. "It's actually not been the worst decision I've ever made. Under the circumstances, we're gonna have to make this work. I can't back out of it, I have to do this right."

"Second time's the charm, right?" Ryan sighs, and Ricky sends him a look.

"Second time?"

"Nevermind. I think Chris wants you," Ryan gestures with his guitar, not wanting to continue the conversation. Ricky sighs as he stands, lifting his guitar off its stand and heading for where Chris stands behind the glass panel at the microphone, gesturing with his hand at Vinny who is holding his drum sticks in the air like someone has a gun on him.

Recording must not be going well.

Ryan glances over as Ricky's phone lights up, displaying your name across the screen. Ricky is busy, Chris would murder half of them if Ryan barged in trying to announce he had a phone call, so he lets it go to voicemail.

He hesitates as his phone suddenly buzzes, and he raises a brow as he sees you're calling him instead.

Interesting.

"Hey, (Y/N)," He says lightly as he answers, wondering what's so important that if Ricky didn't answer you would call him. You could always just text your husband so he gets it later.

"Ryan," you sound absolutely terrible. like you're three days with no sleep and have smoked six packs. "Are you with Ricky? He said he had," you pause to cough, "to go to the studio today."

"Yeah, he's recording at the moment. Do you need something?"

"No, but Claire called me looking for him, apparently Chloe got her sick and she needs Ricky to pick her up and bring her back."

"What?" Ryan frowns. "Why can't she just take care of her? You're sick too."

"I don't know," you sound frustrated. "But Claire doesn't want me to come over and get her, I think she's afraid to let me know where she lives."

"Afraid you'll beat her up for bothering you, maybe. How did she even get your number?"

"Probably from where I called her seventeen times the other day when Chloe was sick and no one would answer the school." You reply, sighing. "Will Ricky be long? Claire was having a meltdown on me, and she usually just reserves those for Ricky."

Oh, so you've picked up on that.

"Uh... he just went in, so it's gonna be a while."

You groan, and it sounds like you sit down heavily. "Shit. Fine. I'll get Chloe."

"Are you sure you're up for it?"

"Not at all, but he's busy. He has to work, and I guess I signed up for this," you grumble. "Just let him know when he's done Chloe is staying with us again."

"Can do," Ryan almost feels bad for you, you don't sound like you're in any condition to go get the little girl. "Why not have Claire just meet you here at the studio? It'll take her an hour to get here, so it'll give you time to be here and Ricky time to stop recording. We gotta finish this song up today for the deadline," he adds, just to let you know why it's so important Ricky can't leave at the moment. If they don't get it done today, their producer is going to flip his lid.

"I mean... I guess I can. Can he meet me in the parking garage so security doesn't think I'm like a bag lady or something trying to get in?"

"I'll let him know."

"You're a blessing, thanks Ryan."

Ricky is going to have a meltdown. He gave Chloe back yesterday, this poor child who needs rest and care, and now her mother is pitching a fit because she's sick? You're sick! He doesn't care if she loses a leg, he doesn't have time for this!

He can't take care of Chloe right now, and you shouldn't have too!

"Claire, you don't even look sick," he hisses under his teeth as she stands in front of him, Chloe asleep in her carseat, the doors of the vehicle shut so she can't hear her parents fighting. He's trying to keep his voice low so he doesn't wake her, and you're not here just yet. "(Y/N) has the same virus, Chloe will literally get it right back!"

"Ricky, I can't take care of her if I'm sick too!" Claire replies just as snottily, and she does have dark circles beneath her eyes she tried to hide with concealer. She looks fine to him otherwise, if not maybe a little thinner then usual, but he's not about to make her feel good about her weight. She's trying to sabotage him this week, isn't she, because of the hearing? Well, she's not going to get under his skin! He's going to be on point for that court date, and he's going to make sure the custody is fair!

"Like hell, you expect (Y/N), too? I'm working, I can't take off right now!"

"Well, you married her, she seems competent." His ex retorts, crossing her arms. Ricky glances around, but the parking garage is fairly empty on this level other than their cars this early in the morning, so there's no worry about anyone overhearing them despite the way their voices echo in the enclosed space. "She's a tough bitch, I'm sure she'll be fine."

"Watch your mouth, Claire. You don't get to insult her." Ricky snaps, narrowing his bright eyes. "Don't be pissy just because she doesn't let you have your way all the time." His eyes flick to Chloe, but she's still sleeping. "This is shitty of you and you know it."

"You have no idea what's going on in my life, Ricky," Claire snarls, bristling in front of him. Her finger suddenly stabs into his shoulder as she speaks, causing him to take a step back. "You don't know what I'm going through right now, I'm doing my best!"

"If you would talk to me, I would know, but you keep me in the dark about everything!" Ricky responds, refusing to let her guilt him. She always did that before, made him feel like the bad guy and that everything was his fault. When he finally lost his cool, when he couldn't take another moment of it, she could never see what she did wrong to set him off or maybe she didn't care, he's not sure. They just couldn't make it together.  "If you need help or something, you need to tell me."

It's like nothing has changed.

"My life is none of your goddamn business, you're not going to try to control it. Chloe is your daughter and your responsibility too, you're not going to get out of keeping her. I need you to take her today, Ricky, I can't be around her when she's sick!" Claire presses forcefully, and he hears just the lightest bit of panic in her undertone.

"I have no issue with taking her, that's not a problem. I love having Chloe around, you just spring it on me when I don't expect it! If it's going to be like this, I'll just take her for the rest of the week, instead of her having to go back and forth."

Claire hesitates, but before she can say anything else you're pulling up beside them, slowly putting your car in park. You can tell they're fighting, you could from their tense stances the moment you saw them. Conveniently you still have Chloe's carseat in the back, so you're ready to take her without having to get anything from Ricky's vehicle.

You wonder what you just drove up on.

"Oh, there's your wife," Claire sneers, clenching her fingers tightly, able to see the size of your wedding ring where she stands. She has nothing against you personally, you're just fine, but she can't miss an opportunity to snap at him. She shouldn't have had a child so young, but she loves her daughter, it's just --- maybe when Chloe is older they'll get along better, but right now... she has a hard time even looking at Ricky.

She's just tired, all the time, and he doesn't make it any easier on her.

"Hey," you say awkwardly as you get out of the car, noticing the tension thick in the air. You're sure Ricky is going to tell you all about it later, but maybe they won't keep fighting in front of you.

Claire cuts her eyes at you, and alright, you do look like you feel bad. You're wearing a dingy gray t shirt and blue jeans, hair in a bun, no makeup --- actually, now that she thinks about it, that's typically how you look. She always suspected you two would end up sleeping together, she doesn't believe in platonic relationships, but married? You're too... tough for Ricky, in her opinion.

"Chloe's been asleep, she'll stay that way on the ride home." She mutters, turning away from Ricky. She tugs open the door, and after a moment Ricky goes to unbuckle his daughter from her carseat, replying gently to her soft, disgruntled mumbles as he has to lift her out. Her arms wind around his neck, and he picks her up easily, noticing she's still in her Paw Patrol pajamas. He quickly switches her between cars, making sure to grab her bag of extra clothes to toss in the seat beside her before shutting the door as quietly as he possibly can.

You don't say anything as you lean against the hood, your face a little pale as you debate how bad it would be if you threw your guts up all over his ex-girlfriends car. If she got close enough you could aim for her, but honestly, you're not that petty.

"I'll take her for the rest of the week." Ricky says to Claire as he comes to stand at your side, crossing his tattooed arms. "I'll see you on Friday at the courthouse."

"You don't have to keep her all week ---." Claire starts immediately, but he shakes his head.

"I'm keeping her. I'm not doing this back and forth with you, there's no point. You don't want to be around Chloe when she's sick, fine, I'll keep her until she's better. Sound fair?"

Wow, Ricky sounds pissed. You know you're annoyed, but he actually sounds angry. Your eyes flick up to him almost in surprise, and you reach forward thoughtlessly, placing your hand on his arm as if to remind him to tone it back a few notches. As much as Ricky denies it, you think Claire has some medical stuff going on, she's just not wanting to tell him about it, for whatever reason.

They were always bad at communicating.

Ricky exhales heavily, feeling your touch against his arm, reminding him not to lose his cool. There's no use in losing his temper, it's done anyway. Maybe it'll just be something else he can use against this woman when it comes down to it.

"I'll see you Friday," he mumbles, turning away from her. Claire presses her lips into a thin line, her eyes flicking back and forth between you and Ricky before she turns sharply and gets into her car. You see her look back at Chloe where she snoozes before slowly starting to back up, her fingers clenched tightly around the steering wheel.

"Ricky, don't be so mean to her,"  you say after a moment, biting your lower lip. "I really do think she's sick or something. Maybe her immune system is bad, and ---."

"Don't make excuses for her, (Y/N)." Ricky interrupts you, tired of fighting. He just wants to go upstairs and finish up the song before Chris and the producer rip him a new one, and he doesn't want to argue with you.  You're his saving grace right now. "If she's sick, she needs to tell me, not hide it. I don't see why she would anyway."

He's going to feel like such a dick if she is, but it's not his fault if he doesn't know! He's not sure why you're on her bandwagon anyway, you've never liked her. "She didn't look sick at all to me. She probably just wants to get her nails done. Ow! Why'd you hit me?"

"You're being a jerk," you mutter, sending him a look where you lean beside him. "Claire doesn't look well, you're just mad at her and ignoring it. You guys seriously need to work on your communication with each other."

"I'd rather eat a sandwich in hell than speak to her again."

You roll your eyes; men are so fucking stubborn.

"I'm going home," you sigh, not going to bother with trying to convince him to see the error of his ways; when he's in a mood it's like talking to a brick wall, usually he has to stew over it for a while before he sees sense. "When will you be back?"

"Around six, maybe. Do you want me to bring dinner?"

"Liquids only, please."

"Okay." Ricky glances over, seeing Claire is about to leave the parking garage. Her car is idling, and she's looking down like she's texting before she pulls out into the road. Maybe she's clearing her schedule to take a vacation with this stupid boyfriend of hers, both of them going to enjoy their free time together while he has to take care of their sick child! "I can do that."

"Thanks." You pat him as you walk by, still feeling nauseated but not quite so bad. You've had so much medicine you're pretty sure you could swim in it, although you really just want to get some sleep. Chloe has the right idea with taking a nap.

"Hey, (Y/N)?"

"Hmm?" You glance at your husband as you tug open your door, the car keys still waiting in the ignition. His eyes flick over your shoulder before he steps to your side, his fingers curling around the top of the door. "Can I kiss you dramatically so Claire sees it and thinks we're madly in love?"

"Only if you don't mind the threat of getting a stomach virus and spreading it to your entire band." You reply, doubting he'd want to do that. You don't really feel like kissing anyone, although he is lucky you brushed your teeth before coming over. You'd sort of drug yourself down the stairs to your car, mumbling incoherently at the guys in the garage as you passed them.

Ricky shrugs his shoulders, as if the consequences don't matter before he leans over the car door, his lips sealing firmly over yours. You blink in surprise, hesitating before leaning back, breaking the kiss.

You know you made fun of him initially about his kissing technique, but he's not bad at all. Just a brief kiss like that, how warm his lips are, how soft, well... you like those. They're simple, but they get the point across.

You sort of wish you'd agreed to have kissing as a more regular addition.

"I'll, I'll see you at home," you mumble, turning away from him. You guess maybe it is a good thing you're keeping sex out of the equation, because you might have issues with getting attached; you were never much of a "friends with benefits" kind of person anyway. You like for it to mean something, not just be casual. It's been such a crazy two months, planning the wedding, being married, Chloe being over... you feel like you know Ricky a lot better.

He's a good dad, he cares --- in some way he reminds you of your own. Your dad died a few years ago due to a heart attack, and you miss him dreadfully. Your mom died when you were young, so it was just the two of you, and he did his best raising a little girl. You know he loved you, read your princess stories to you, kept you fed and taught you everything you know about cars.

Ricky is so good with Chloe, he's attentive, although he does spoil her a bit, but that's just a dad thing and because he doesn't get to see her often. He just... you just wish he could get along with Claire better, all of this wouldn't be an issue if they weren't at each other's throats all the time.

It's fine if they're not together romantically, but they should at least pretend to coexist for their daughter's sake. That's your opinion, which doesn't mean much, and it's none of your business anyway.

You're just his fake wife.

"Sorry I'm late," Ricky says apologetically as he sets the bags of food down on the counter, glancing around for his daughter. He's an hour later then what he said he would be, but they had a lot of work to do to get everything finished in time. He was more behind than the rest of the guys, he's been so preoccupied he hasn't been showing up like he should.

"It's alright, she's just slept on and off all day. I gave her some more of her medicine, which apparently conks her out, so she'll probably be up at 3 AM." You comment, pursing your lips. You wonder if you should take it, if it would give you as hardcore of a nap as it does her. "Food is appreciated though, thank you."

Ricky bobs his head, leaving you to unpack the soups he brought as he goes to peer into the spare bedroom. It's dark inside, the curtain drawn, but he can see the bundle of blankets that is his child. She doesn't stir at all when he opens and closes the door, so that's good.

"How are you feeling?" He asks you, leaning back against the couch to kick off his sneakers, letting them drop to the floor. He shirks out of his jacket, letting it rest against the pillows; you always keep the apartment a little warm in his opinion, but he's not about to mess with the thermostat.

"A little better." You say, pleased to find the soup. For some reason egg drop soup always makes you feel better, despite it has grease and the like in it. You could literally drink it right out of the container, but that might be rude. "How did work go?"

"Took forever, but we finally got it done in time. I was behind on my parts with everything going on," he sighs, running his inked fingers through his black hair, which is getting a little long. "But the song is done, we hit the deadline, that's all that matters. Chris can take the diabolical arch out of his eyebrows now."

You snort, lifting the lid off the soup and grabbing two bowls. "Hungry?"

"Starving. I also got spring rolls if you can stomach those."

Your weakness. You love those just as much as you do breadsticks. "I love them, but I might wait for the time being."

"Okay," Ricky gratefully takes the bowl you offer, following you to sit down on the sofa. You have a small kitchen table, but he's never known of you to use it. You sigh as you snuggle down into your pillows, propping your feet on the coffee table and holding the bowl close to your lips.

"Thanks for getting this."

"No problem. You're sick because of me, so I might as well take care of you. I can draw you a hot bath next, add some bubbles to it, light some candles."

"Are you trying to make me feel better or get laid?" You send him an amused look, liking how his cheeks turn a bright pink. He's so easy to embarrass, you can't help yourself.

"Hilarious."

You chuckle, taking a few sips of your soup, loving the warmth and taste of it. "That Chinese place in the best in the world, I'm sure of it."

"Nah, there's a great one in California I'll have to take you too."

"Well, doesn't California have like Chinatown? So of course it's going to be good."

"True. But we should go, you'd love their food. Even better than this."

"Nothing is better than this. Plus the likelihood of me going to California? My shop would burn to the ground," you snort, shaking your head. "I'd come back to a shell of a building."

"Your positivity is so becoming."

You cut your eyes at him, tempted to bump his bowl just to be mean, but you let it go. It's been a rough day, plus with the level his blood pressure probably went this morning,  you don't want to rile him up too much. So you finish your soup in silence, staring at the TV but not really seeing what's playing. Chloe gets up only a few times to use the bathroom, eat a single spring roll, and go back to bed.

"I'm pretty sure she ate that with her eyes closed and still asleep."

"She's good at multitasking."

"I notice when she's sick she doesn't want to stay in the same bed with us," you say after a moment, curled up beneath your blankets now, your legs pulled under. "The other night she never came in once."

"Probably didn't think about it," Ricky yawns, stretching his arms back along the sofa. Your eyes flick over his tattoos, the sleeve, the words on his fingers. You wonder how badly it has to hurt to get his fingers tattooed, that has to be sensitive. "She just likes the attention, I think, and waking up with us."

You guess.

You kind of think she's getting a little old for it, though.

You stifle a yawn behind the blanket, and boldly shift until you're leaning up against Ricky, enjoying the warmth radiating off his body. You feel cold, and he's always like a furnace. His eyes flick down to you as you let your head rest against his shoulder, his arm dropping to curve around you hesitantly.

This is new, is it because you feel bad?

"We can change the channel if you want," you say after a moment, carefully curling your fingers into his black t-shirt. "I know you're not really into this show."

"It's fine, I don't mind. You're trying to catch up, right?" he doesn't care, he's not really been watching it. He was kind of debating on getting a springroll, but now he doesn't want to bother you and make you move. He can smell your shampoo, the lotion you use every morning that reminds him of brown sugar --- women and their scented stuff. He actually doesn't mind going places smelling like glazed cinnamon donuts or whatever it's called.

You snuggle into him, and after a few minutes you're dozing, your eyes closed. He absently toys with your hair, letting it drop lightly through his fingers as he watches your show. He has no idea what's going on or who the characters are, you're several seasons ahead of what he'd seen of it, but the music isn't terrible.

He props his chin on his hand, tired himself. It's been such a long day, he's been worrying about Claire and Chloe, about you. You're sick, Chloe's sick, Claire is possibly sick --- he's not sure what he's supposed to do. If the mother of his child is not good, she needs to let him know so he can help out. He's not trying to steal her daughter away from her forever, he just wants to see her more often.

Well, lately he can't really complain, he's got her pretty much half of every week. He doesn't mind, it's kind of nice, especially having little family moments with you. Sometimes he worries that's it's not good, that he's not keeping the necessary barrier up to keep it from getting too personal. You're just friends, and it's just a guy thing for him to think sometimes there could be more. How can he not the more he gets to know you?

You can know someone, but when you start living with them, everything seems to change. You know their bad qualities --- like how you would rather leave the sink full of dishes and wait until the laundry is piled to do it --- and their good qualities. You genuinely care and you'll help someone to the best of your ability, you're great with his daughter, patient, and you offer him advice he should listen to more often. Sure, you do kick in your sleep, often smell like grease, and curse a lot more than he thinks you should, but... he can overlook all that.

You're actually one of the best people he knows. Living with you has been fine, he hasn't been back over to his old house in a while. He's still kind of fretting over the fact he's paying rent somewhere he's not staying, but he can't just ditch out on Ryan --- if only you could have reasonably moved in with him instead. But at least here Chloe has her own room, sort of, whereas she didn't at the house, even if it's smaller.

Ricky's actually not minding the soft mattress as much anymore either. Everything here is becoming familiar, homey, and you didn't care that he hung up his posters or photos, or that some of his things are lying around the livingroom. He should move his shoes, you'll trip over them in the morning since you never look where you're going, but he'll do that later.

You mumble in your sleep, shifting closer, your arm slipping around his waist. He hesitates, sinking down a little more comfortably in the cushions, propping his feet on your scarred, messy coffee table. It's kind of nice to have you like this, it's... it doesn't feel fake at all.

Little things like this, when no one is watching and neither of you are having to put on a show, he likes it. It's comfortable, natural, like it's supposed to be. Sometimes he kind of worries he's getting too okay with this, he knows it's going to end.

He's not sure when, and that makes his chest pinch a little. He likes being married to you even if you're not sleeping together. His life hasn't changed that much, except he likes coming home to find the apartment warm, no matter who gets there first. You always greet him when he walks into the garage, even if it's just you waving your wrench in acknowledgment.

He presses his lips into your hair, sighing.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake

-Note: It’s kind of embarrassing to admit but my comments around the visuals of A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening are straight-up incorrect. The two games did not share the same visual style and I honestly don’t know why I said that; I most definitely knew better. Still, I’m not going to get rid of it because the internet needs more examples of people admitting to be being wrong.

I say a lot that I want to be positive, but it’s really gonna be hard with this one. See, at the latest Nintendo Direct it was announced that they would be releasing a remake of the 26 year old game, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. As it happens I was already considering writing something about this game in a “Games from my Childhood” article, but that would actually have been positive! This one is… well, I’m going to at least try and balance every negative with a positive.

  So where to begin: I won’t cover the story because spoilers but how about some personal background? The game came out a year before I did (ha! bad jokes) and I have no idea when I got my grubby little paws on it, but it was a part of my life genuinely for as long as I can remember, along with the Pokémon games. I never completed it as a child, but my memories of it were so good that I returned to it as an adult and completed it, learning its sad secret.

-hey! according to this it released the same year I did; me getting my years mixed up I guess-

  Link’s Awakening (LA) was originally a pet project made outside of work hours which is why it borrows resources from other games such as the Mario series, but it was eventually released to critical acclaim. The gameplay is much the same as its immediate predecessor A Link to the Past (LttP), but with a number of new items and a unique soundtrack. Visually it is much the same as well, although its original release was black and white for the GameBoy with Link’s Awakening DX adding colour for the GameBoy Colour.

  So let’s start with the visuals as that is most of what we have right now: the original shared its visuals with LttP what with them using the same assets (tools, resources etc) and LttP had a sequel recently that looked really nice. But the upcoming LA remake looks nothing like it; I wouldn’t expect it to but when a defence of the artistic choice is that “it’s an update of the original graphics” (so why not use the assets from the LttP remake?) or that it somehow “reflects the atmosphere of the original” except there’s no reason for it to be any different to, again, the LttP remake. And in response to the “atmosphere”, LA was one of the darker yet in some ways more whimsical games; this new style is childish to the extreme.

  Don’t get me wrong, I love something that is good and childish, but there is a level when it stops being great and starts to feel like they condescend to the player. Bright colours, simple faces, high pitched noises- Oh god the noises!! I’ll expand on the sounds later but I’m still on the visuals. I’ve heard the game described as looking like Claymation, which isn’t wrong, but my immediate thought was that it looked like cheap plastic. And after watching it again and again as I discussed it with a friend, this opinion stuck.

-tell me this doesn’t look like claymation; this isn’t a game, it’s an animated short film-

  You know how shiny and tacky cheap plastic usually looks? Imagine an entire game like that; an entire world like that. Fans of anime may understand what I say next, but there is a large element of “chibi” in this new game. Large head, tiny body. It’s often seen in short 4 minute spin offs of popular series.

-as you can see, chibi is hardly meant to be taken seriously-

  So shiny plastic, silly chibi art with a soulless expression. Oh yeah, that. Link’s eyes have zero soul behind them. Zero. He’s a freakin’ monster. Have you seen those Funko Pops? You know how empty they look? Some have said it somehow reflects the original game’s art again, but back then they didn’t have the technology to make him look soulless and young me always thought he looked determined; it was really cool.

Okay, so I said I would try and be fair, and I have shat upon the plasticine toy-box long enough, so here’s what is good visually. The areas are actually really nice. 

Ignoring the nail varnish sheen on everything, things are really detailed. There is an unfortunate trend in games, likely due to technical limitations, to have flat textures. Basically, imagine the difference between a tile or wood panel floor, and a picture of a tile or wood panel floor. But this game looks to have really tried in these areas. The grass looks thick and lush, tiles look like more than a photograph on the floor and even the flat flowers on the ground look decent. Just a shame it all looks like LEGO. Actually, a LEGO Zelda game would be awesome. But this is not that.

  I haven’t explained that very well, it’s an area that I am new at but I will say that clearly a lot of care has gone into the assets and the world. It is not a lazy game in any way.

Next I’m going to talk about the sound. First of all, I’m convinced that they have artificially increased the pitch of Link’s voice so it is painfully sharp to the ears. I’ll admit, I have an unusual sensitivity to lights and sound and thus I prefer darker colours and quieter sounds; I avoid clubs like the plague and not just because I’ll likely catch it there. So maybe, just maybe, I’m noticing something that won’t be a problem for most, and is just unfortunate for me. And let’s ignore that it doesn’t match the darker tone of the game.

  And the music? Also quite high pitched. And super cheery. It doesn’t have either the dreamlike or dark tones that could be expected (and just thinking of how it could be dreamlike gives me shivers; it could be so good) but is instead inanely cheery. In fact, I hope they sped everything up for the trailer and the pitch is just an unfortunate side-effect.

  On the plus side, the trailer opens with a cool cinematic and I swear the music changes from a nice, cheerful rendition (I don’t dislike cheerful in-and-of-itself) of the Zelda main theme to the death squeals of various instruments that I mentioned before. On top of that, it ends on a really nice vocal version of the LA theme, Ballad of the Wind Fish. If the trailer had been the cinematic and that closing song alone then I would be beyond excited about the remake. Thank heaven it wasn’t, I’m not sure my love of the series could survive such a plummeting disappointment.

So I’ll finish here. I was originally very pleased, excited even that they had decided to remake what was a favourite, underrated and apparently forgotten game, but I kept my expectations low because I knew what to expect from these companies. I thought I did anyway. I was still disappointed. I thought I had prepared for the worst. Still, at least it gave me something to write about.

  But, the game has clearly had a lot of work put into it and gameplay-wise it actually looks to flow really well so I’m sure it controls like a treat. But the visuals and music are too big of a deal for me to let slide; if it keeps up like this then it could literally be painful for me to play. Still, games do change a lot from the initial trailer to its release and I even put forth an idea of why the sound may hurt me so much here. Maybe the final game will be a lot better. Unfortunately, the things I want to be done in games and such rarely are, and I am often alone in my complaints.

And finally, yes I am aware that the famous and incredibly popular Wind Waker entry in the series also had similar complaints and became, as I said, incredibly popular. I wasn’t a part of that crowd, I was too young and honestly, Link’s Awakening was the only Zelda game I had actually played at that time.

jeankasa for the ship thing?

AH MY SECOND FAVORITE SNK SHIP ｡◕‿◕｡

• When or if I started shipping it: At first I saw Jeankasa as a shallow sort of ship since their first encounter involves Jean complimenting Mikasa on her beautiful, black hair (looking back though, Jeanboi WAS pretty nervous). Not to mention the ship was pretty one-sided. But after finishing the anime and reading the manga, as well as a meta or two, my view of the ship completely changed. I recall that scene where Jean is swayed by Mikasa’s head-turning beauty very endearingly now. This probably sounds silly, but I officially started shipping them hard around chapter 83 of the manga where Mikasa was shown in a panel treating Jean’s wounds, disproving any claim that she doesn’t give a shit about him. (Actually, there were other significant moments showing that she gave a shit about him before this)

• My thoughts: The thing I like about Jeankasa is that it has so much potential given that Jean is confirmed to be attracted to Mikasa in canon. Normally, I wouldn’t want the main girl to end up with someone deemed as a side character, but Mikasa and Jean are clearly an exception. Jean is also admirable for getting his facts straight no matter who he’s addressing, which means he isn’t blinded by his crush on Mikasa when he confronts her about Eren or her decision-making. For me, this is a good basis for a solid relationship.  

• What makes me happy about them: I’m happy that Jean is just so supportive of Mikasa. It’s clear that he respects her, even when he’s criticizing her, and even when he’s jealous of Eren. I’m also so happy for the little, telltale signs that Mikasa is starting to care for him in a way as well. The art drawn for this ship makes my heart glow (kudos to @shynii for their elegant sketches) and the fics aren’t bad either. I’m at least happy that the fandom is still around.

• What makes me sad about them: I’m sad at how underrated this ship is. It deserves as much love as other more popular Mikasa ships. It also saddens me that their interactions are somewhat lacking, like, I can’t put my finger on it, but I’d really like Isayama to give us a hint of how their relationship went before the timeskip.  

• Things done in art/fic that annoys me: I know this is a bit far-fetched, but can people NOT use Eren as a plot device for once? Also, I hate fics where Mikasa cheats on Eren with Jean, or where Mikasa only seeks Jean’s comfort whenever she feels lonely due to Eren not being around. 

• Things I look for in art/fic: Perhaps something like this. (Yeah, Eren’s absence is in it but its toned down this time) A fic where Jean tries his best to comfort Mikasa not because of his crush, but because he chooses to be kind and to be there for her as a friend. I want a fic with them sparring (I have a fascination for Snk ships sparring together), with Jean trying to understand who Mikasa is behind her cool exterior, and with them communicating with their eyes and are somehow being able to understand one another, even just a little bit. I’d really like that.

• Who I’d be comfortable with them ending up with, if not each other: With Mikasa, it would obviously be with either Eren or Armin. I also like her with Levi (DONT GIVE ME THAT LOOK), Hange (Please don’t kill me), Sasha or Annie (if she ever comes back, lol). With Jean, it’s either Armin, Eren, or Sasha.

• My happily ever after for them: I’d like them to live somewhere far away in a forest, and have their family setup similar to what Mikasa had with her parents. Jean would cook delicious omelettes for their kids, while Mikasa would go out hunting for game and chopping wood. Occasionally, they would get visits from Eren and Armin, and they would smile fondly as they watch their kids play with their uncles. (Omg I’m gonna choke on the fluff) 

• What is their favorite non-sexual activity?: Hmmm…does having a conversation about Eren or Armin count? Because I think Jean and Mikasa would gush over the two of them in whatever way they can. Also, I think they’d be the type to have strength matches with each other (even though Jean knows he’ll definitely lose lol)

Mother’s Day is nearly here and whether you’re of the group that posts adorable tributes to their mothers or the one that cringes (or openly shames those posters) because their reality doesn’t reflect yours (or you live somewhere in between), this might be a good year to read What My Mother and I Don’t Talk About. It was for me. While I especially loved that the experiences represented in the essays therein were diverse enough to reflect mine and also to challenge my thinking, I was also grateful to get new angles on my relationship with my mother and with myself as a mother.

Maybe “motherhood” is such a loaded concept because so much of who we are and who we believe ourselves to be is tied up in our relationship with the woman of whom we are borne. For too many of us that concept becomes something we have to work on for the rest of our lives as we grow from infants to children to adults and maybe even parents. It is for me. I think it has been for my mom, too. This complexity made me appreciate the ways in which the writers in this collection worked to understand both themselves and their mothers as separate beings in addition to examining the deeply close relationship between individuals.

Individuation is a Bitch (and So Was I)

It took a therapist to teach me the word “individuation” and it took my son to really teach me what the word means. At three and a half he’s stretching that individuality in all the ways he’s meant to. I can see how it hurts him to rip himself from me and how much he needs to know he’s welcome back. I can see how deeply he needs to have that space to become and how much he has no idea that his own actions can hurt, too. It reminds me of both the teen years to come and of my own teen years. I don’t think it’s fair to call myself a bitch (beyond even the patriarchal implications of that word) but not only was my own becoming hard on me, it was hard on my parents. I was hard on my mom. Our relationship now is not what I think either one of us wants it to be but I don’t think either one of us knows yet how to bridge the hurts.

Nayomi Munaweera’s essay “Her Body / My Body” about her mother’s inability to separate her idea of herself from her daughter hit close to home for me. The conflict is neatly summed up as “she saw no difference between her body and my body,” except if you’ve been in this kind of relationship you know how much that “neat” sentence conceals. While my mom did not wipe my ass until I was 12 (thank God!), I’ve struggled at times to feel like my mom sees me as a separate being. The push-pull of individuation is so necessary and yet it can be so painful for everyone, it’s no wonder that so many relationships break down along these lines. I hope I can do better with my son. Most days I am not doing better with my son.

Mothers are Humans

News flash! The fact that our mothers are human should not be surprising and yet the idea sort of rubs. When we are infants mothers seem purpose-built to meet our needs. As we grow up we grow into meeting our own needs many of us (guilty!) never really turn around and fully look at our mothers as people too.

Although Leslie Jamison’s relationship with her mom is wonderfully close—so much so that she writes how her friends never want to hear about the joy of that relationship, even in closeness there are things to learn. Jamison’s essay is about connecting with her mother’s former husband so that she can be even closer to the idea of her mother. When Jamison writes “How many times has my mom picked up the phone to hear my voice cracked with tears, only letting it crack once I knew she was there?” she is realizing new depths to her mother and that even the advice her mother has to offer isn’t something she’s fully inhabited herself. Instead that “wisdom” can be “a kind of muscle memory—something she might have wanted to tell that version of herself.”

This is tricky, because if our mothers, the women who represent the pinnacle of humanity, aren’t perfect, than how can we ever hope to be?

Brandon Taylor’s essay, “All About My Mother” left me with excellent homework. The essay is filled with a gorgeous back and forth about the ways his mother loved him and the ways she hurt him. He’s clearly grappling with understanding how both could co-exist, but in the final page of the essay he writes a slew of declarative sentences to describe his mother. I’d say they’re simple but they aren’t—the ideas are complex and the sentences contradict each other, but they are free of judgment and bring us closer to seeing her as a full human. I know that I can get closer to my mother by trying to see her in the same way. Maybe I’ll discover something as remarkable as André Aciman’s observance that his deaf mother could understand his masked conversation simply by following the movement of his eyebrows.

I was once my mother’s confidante in ways that I did not want to be. In this I related to “Nothing Left Unsaid” by Julianna Baggott which gave me a new lens to view that experience through… Baggott’s own examination and growth took me from feeling victimized by TMI to seeing my mother as a woman who might not have had anyone else to talk to.

The Strength to Mother Ourselves

I first heard of this book during a panel at AWP entitled “Writing the Mother Wound” where a couple of these essays were read. I learned a lot from that panel, not just about writing about motherhood but also about living with my own mother wound. One of the lessons that hit home was from Vanessa Martir who said, “I may be unmothered, but I will always want my mother’s love.” I realized then that I needed to look into this experience and not run anymore from what isn’t working. Because I do love my mom and I want her to love me. I think she does, but there are still voids between the love she gives and the love I want to receive… voids I have to learn to fill myself.

In some ways I dream of having Alexander Chee’s grown-up experience… the one where he talks to his mom about some really hard things and she helps him rewrite his narrative more fully. It’s a door that opened for me this winter when my maternal grandmother (a well of toxicity) died and I finally had a long overdue conversation with my mom. I heard some of the things I needed to hear that day, but I’m still having trouble trusting that our next conversation will build from there. And I fear that this next quote is optimistic.

Other Things I Loved in This Book

There were so many moments in these essays I related to in ways that were not about my mother. From Jamison’s description of writers as vampires to Machado’s love/fear of toddlers and how children destroy writing to Kiese Laymon’s observations that “the folks I’ve been most harmful to in this country are people I thought I loved.” The stark patterns in “Fifteen” by Bernice L. McFadden broke my heart hard and I felt deeply for the woman Dylan Landis’s mom could have been (even if only romantically so) in “16 Minetta Lane.” I recognized the woman Cathi Hanauer’s mother is in “My Mother’s (Gate) Keeper” and am still learning from the idea of living with the itch of a mosquito bite. The way Melissa Febos inhabits her mother’s lexicon in “Thesmophoria” is pure magic and Michele Filgate’s reminder that sometimes the deepest hurt is betrayal was illuminating in ways I won’t go into now. The book is rich and the experiences varied. I think readers of all kinds of backgrounds will find something in it to relate to.

What I Really Want for Mother’s Day

Since becoming a mother I haven’t been the best celebrant of Mother’s Day in regards to my own mom. I’ve wanted to soak up the time and love of my son and husband. I’ve wanted to enjoy the cupcakes and flowers and uninterrupted baths. This year I’ve asked them for a trip to the garden store and a planting-a-thon in our gorgeous back yard—my safe haven from the world. But this year I also want to talk to my mom. I don’t know what I want to say and I don’t know what I want her to say, but I do know that the cord between us is not completely cut, nor do I want it to be. So I’m going to sacrifice some of my guaranteed bliss for a shot at the bliss of mending fences. Wish me luck!

I don’t recommend you send your mom What My Mother and I Don’t Talk About for Mother’s Day, but I do recommend you send it. Start a conversation about something you’ve never said or about something you’ve never asked. Talk to her like a human you love, one who you may not have fully recognized as a separate human. I’ll bet money hearing from you is what she really wants on any given day.

I live in Southern California, I have been looking for work since I moved here from France. I posted a general sales resume on careerbuilder.com and have since been spammed by insurance agencies. Some have been good companies like State Farm and Farmers. Some have been less, like Colonial Life and Axa advisers. I believe Axa wanted me for a commissioned investment broker position. I didn't pass the personality test for State Farm, but I can try again in a year. I will have a strategy and research next time. Debbie Dooley is a self-described crusader for solar power in Florida, where she is up against major public power utilities. But she has already won a similar battle in Georgia, and she says her message is that of a true conservative

Debbie Dooley is a firebrand Republican and an outspoken founding member of the Tea Party. But in a fast-intensifying battle over the future of solar power in Florida, she is not on the side you might expect.

Along with a diverse grassroots citizens coalition including environmentalists and other left-leaning activists, Dooley is taking on Big Energy and its big-spending conservative backers in an intriguing fight that puts her toe-to-toe with her onetime political allies.

She is at the spearhead of a campaign to place an initiative before Florida voters next year that would give consumers the freedom to choose to buy their solar energy from smaller private companies and bypass the mega-bucks utilities.

Its Floridas solar eclipse, says Dooley, who points to statistics she claims are proof that the Sunshine State is trailing the nation in utilising its most plentiful natural resource.

If the initiative is successful, Florida would no longer be one of only four states that prohibits so-called third-party power purchase agreements (PPA), which, in basic terms, refer to a consumer allowing a company to install solar panels with no upfront cost, then paying the company for electricity that the panels generate.

As things stand, only those who can afford the substantial initial outlay can power up from the sun, a situation Dooley says is unacceptable. With Florida 14th in the country in terms of installed solar capacity, only $63m was spent on new installations statewide in 2014, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Lets remove the barriers, remove the shackles that protect the monopolies and allow consumer choice and freedom, said Dooley, whose Green Tea coalition of environmentally conscious conservatives is a key component of the Floridians for Solar Choice amalgam.

Unsurprisingly, the big public power utilities dont like the message being pushed by the activists as they tour the state attempting to collect the 683,000 signatures needed by February to get the initiative on Novembers ballot. So companies including Florida Power and Light, Duke Energy, Tampa Electric and Gulf Power are among the donors who have ploughed millions of dollars into a rival group, Consumers for Smart Solar, which is promoting its own initiative that would enshrine in the states constitution their exclusive right to sell solar power.

Their argument is that opening up the industry the way the citizens coalition wants would lead to less regulation and extra expense for traditional consumers in subsidies for the solar industry.

As the duel has become more caustic in recent months, so have the attacks from rightwingers on Dooley, who has driven thousands of miles across Florida with her partner Jason to speak at rallies, lunches and other engagements in support of a new direction for solar power. Some have called her a fake conservative and say she has betrayed her Republican roots. Others have branded her eccentric and dismissed her travels as a solar-powered clown show as she shills for the industry.

I dont worry about the attacks because I understand the political reality, which is theyre afraid of you, Dooley told the Guardian after a recent speaking engagement before the League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County.

If youre not being successful, theyre going to ignore you, so Im really getting under someones skin. I have to laugh at that.

Back in 2009, feeling that the Republican party had lost its way, Dooley joined up with 21 like-minded supporters to give the Tea Party movement its first organised structure. I was tired of politics as usual, tired of big money controlling everything, she said, explaining why she became a director of the Tea Party Patriots.

Now, she says, she finds it ironic that much of the criticism comes from rightwing groups who shared her beliefs, including the Koch brothers-funded American Legislative Exchange Council, but which take an opposite stance on clean energy.

True conservatives champion free-market choice, not government-created monopolies that stifle competition. she said. Trying to protect monopolies from competition is not free market. You should be bound by your principles and develop your position on issues based on your principles, not who your financial donors are.

The presence of Dooley, a pastors daughter from Bogalusa, Louisiana, in the midst of the Florida battle could prove to be a trump card, according to Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.

Here in Florida, the political leadership is conservative, so having a voice like Debbies and others on the conservative side to be able to stand up for solar is very critical to the success of running this ballot initiative, he said.

Additionally, this is a conflict Dooley has fought and won before. She says the arguments in Florida, and the tactics employed, are similar to those that existed two years ago in Georgia, another red state wrestling with the solar power issue. Despite heavy opposition from the utilities there, and what she says was its $10m war chest against the organisation, Dooleys grassroots coalition won the day, with a third-party solar bill clearing the legislature this April.

If you mentioned solar in Georgia, it was always, No way, no how, but we won that fight with people power, Dooley said. We couldnt match them in money, so we built a coalition, we got free media, we got our message out there. It was easier for us to get press coverage because people were amazed you had these conservative groups, Tea Party groups, the Sierra Club, elected officials, all joining forces to oppose this.

We all had different messages, the different groups, but we were working for the same goal. If we agree solar is the way to go, we come together and ignore issues we may disagree on while respecting the right of everyone to believe and advocate for them. But come together and stay focused. There are many different roads into Atlanta, where I live, and you make your choice depending on which direction youre coming from. What matters is that you end up there.

Even as a little girl, Dooley refused to be put in a box. When her grandfather bought her a dress-up cowgirl costume as a Christmas gift when she was just seven, the self-confessed tomboy complained loudly.

I dont want that. I dont want be a cowgirl. I want a cowboy outfit, Dooley recalls shouting at her relatives. I was so upset, they took it right back and got me the cowboy outfit. Theyd assumed because I was a girl that was what I wanted. But I was not afraid to challenge the norms.

Dooley says her early years following her fathers preachings in Louisiana, Tennessee and Florida helped to shape her political leanings and turned her into the driven character she is today at the age of 57.

I learned at a very early age to speak up and not be taken advantage of. I had no issue doing that, she said. My daddy prepared me well: he was strong, not afraid to take a step out, and I get a lot of my traits from him.

I will do whats right and damn the torpedoes kind of thing. If you know a preachers kid, you know they can be rebellious. People have preconceived notions about you and you fight to show its not like that. You grow up tough, you grow up to be independent.

Any pastor will tell you, you can have 100 in your congregation and only a portion of them will be happy at any one time. You understand that not everyone will be happy; you just do your best and stand for whats right.

Dooley, however, insists that taking a stand does not always have to be a politically charged move. I became a crusader for solar and Im appealing to conservatives, [but] I believe being good stewards of the environment God gave us should not be a partisan issue, she says, pointing out that it was the ultra-conservative president Ronald Reagan who championed the 1987 Montreal Protocol that phased out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from aerosols to protect the ozone layer.

I believe in clean energy. Ive always cared about clean air and a clean environment. Ive always been like that, she said.

I have a grandson, Aiden, who is seven. Hell know I fought for energy choice and freedom, hell know I fought for a clean environment for him, so he wouldnt have a polluted world. I see it is my legacy to him.

Unfortunately, the legacy of some of my fellow Republicans is that they simply denied that we were damaging our environment because they were greedy for economic reasons.
