Spy x Family Chapter 70 Spoilers and Blind Guesses

1. I see a lot of people say that Anya actively tries to defuse the situation simply because Anya thinks she’s the mc of a spy movie and she has become used to this sort of situations. I mean I guess these are part of the reasons, but note that Anya stepped up right after this:

All other children are immediately soothed right after Bill’s words, and Squire further emphasises on how they are precious children of important people. While other children are most likely to sit back and think that help would be on the way because their parents would protect them (esp Becky), Anya tries to actively help with the situation because she is reminded of her parents.

She didn’t do it for waku waku, and she didn’t do it for stellar stars. She did it because of her parents. Although she knows her parents are going to save her, she always tries to help to make their jobs easier. And that is why this scene struck me the hardest.

2. Not sure how Yor would be involved. A lot of people mentioned how Yor might see it on the news since Becky and Anya successfully got the message out. BUT! Do note that Yor works as a civil servant and she might be able to get info within the government (if so, going to Matthew McMahon for further info would be a sensible choice, and Matthew McMahon is the Director of Policy at the Berlint City Hall so the following chapter might show how much the Garden is involved with Ostanian politics.)

3. Franky would most likely inform Twilight, but Twilight most likely won’t be there till last minute.

Unpopular opinion: I agree that this could be the start of Twilight questioning his allegiance with WISE, but rather than doing this purely because of his “family”, I think Twilight would start to question how different his ideologies and WISE’s are.

A hijacked school bus + the political mess behind = a bunch of helpless kid crying

We already know Twilight knows what the sensible thing is to do, and we have already seen what he chose to do despite knowing all of these political stuffs. He would definitely choose the children over anything and everything else.

In Chapter 62 we already know Twilight didn’t become a spy because he likes what WISE or Westalis does. (When you really think about it, Westalis basically decided that his friends had to go to a battle that was doomed to fail for the greater good, and Ostalians killed them.) There will be a fallout sooner or later. Anya with a bomb strapped onto her neck would probably be the last straw.

I don’t mean to downplay his love for his family. But I don’t think Endo is the kind of person who would go LOVE CONQUERS ALL!!!!!! That means if Twilight is to get out of his “leaving the family behind” mindset, it should be because he doesn’t see how that is something necessary or even useful anymore. He has to step out of the shadows of his past on his own, but his family, or his growing love for his family, would continue to inspire or even show him the directions on the way.

4. It would most likely be a Yuri/SSS arc. Obviously Yuri would want Anya to be safe because he knows how important the little girl is to his sister. It will be much sweeter if Yuri could bond with Anya because of Anya’s behaviour/reaction. Anya is trying to survive and stay strong in an extremely hostile situation while her parents could not be there for her. She is a commoner dragged into the situation because the Red Circus wanted to use the rich kids as leverage against the big guns. Doesn’t that remind you of Yor/Yuri’s childhood? And to think how hard Yuri had to work to become successful in this classist society, and why Yuri would give up his position as a diplomat to become an SSS officer while being a diplomat is already respectable enough for most people?

Yep, a possible Yuri backstory arc.

5. If there is no Yuri backstory, it would most likely be a glimpse of Anya’s backstory (because “the Red Circus is funded in part by foreign interests”.) If so, Endo has chosen violence: “You think a bomb strapped on Anya’s neck is dark huh? Cute.”

6. I don’t think it will be a Nightfall arc because she is still a spy, although her love for Twilight has made her quite unprofessional at times. (And also Nightfall doesn’t really like Anya as well because Anya is not “good enough”. Remember how ready she was to be ultra-strict tough-love mom to Anya? But it’s too late to get another child to replace Anya now.)

If Nightfall is to impress Twilight, her go-to method will not be showing Twilight how much of a “good” mother she is to Anya. She would most likely want to prove how valuable an asset she could be to Operation Strix, and in this case, she might even think it is best to keep it from Twilight so he can do his spy work somewhere else while she takes care of the situation.

HOWEVER, the following chapters might show how she (sent by WISE) tries to cooperate with the SSS, and thus it could be a Yuri x Nightfall collaboration arc.

7. Plan D is now possible: Blackbell x WISE anyone? The Lady Patriots Society would most likely not be involved in the fight, but they could be instrumental to the decision-making during the process and ESPECIALLY the aftermath imo. Still on the fence if Melinda would appear. Demetrius would most probably appear because I think he and Desmond are the closest in the family.

8. Will there be a mini vacation arc after this serious arc? Pretty please?

Taking a road trip to the Roller Coaster Capital of the World last summer naturally got me thinking about whether or not the Links would enjoy these modern mechanical feats of ingenuity. Enjoy these long overdue LU Links + Roller Coaster Headcanons! 🎢

~ ~ ~

Wind - learning to love them. Adopted as Wild's unofficial riding partner, which makes Wind feel like a Kewl Kid™. Secretly apprehensive of going upside down for the first time, but puts on a brave face and rides anyways. Proceeds to shout about how "totally gnarly" the ride was afterwards, where everyone in his vicinity must suffer through a play-by-play of his entire ride experience. Will invariably (and illicitly) reach into the water to give you an extra splash on water rides, so watch out.

Sky - loves them. The fast launch coasters remind him of flying, and he loves that wind-whipping-through-your-hair sensation that nothing but loftwing flight can replicate. Rides with his hands in the air the entire time, which Wind tries to copy but only with partial success. Screams to his heart’s content, so expect to get an earful if you sit next to him. He and Zelda would absolutely be one of those disgustingly cute couples that lather on the PDA while waiting in line, where Legend pulls faces in the background.

Wild - lives for them. The more inversions, the better. (Think AT's ‘The Smiler,’ or ‘X2’ at Magic Mountain.) What you would call a proper “thoosie.” Enjoys terrorizing the others in the queue before boarding. (Wild: “You know people have fallen to their deaths on this, right?” Wind: “Wait, really? Do you think we’ll be okay??😨” Twi: “No they haven’t, can it Wild.”) Complains about trim brakes and stapling every time without fail. Excessively entertained by the ride photos, esp Twilight’s faces in them. Knows where all the cameras are and poses in the most ridiculous ways you can imagine.

Warrior - likes them in moderation. Will go on the high intensity rides but starts to feel woozy after too many, so don’t ask him to marathon them. Spends ten minutes fixing his hair after each ride, in which he's often left behind. Jokes about holding a worried Legend’s hand to convince him onto the big rides, which predictably triggers threats and a shouting match. (Nobody comments when Legend still chooses to sit next to him, though.) Enjoys mocking everyone’s pics at the ride exits, including his own.

Hyrule - loves them, especially the chaotic spinning rides. Likely to get sick after repeated runs, but always forgets and rides them anyway. (Just don’t feed him right before he rides, lol.) Probably the loudest screamer next to Sky. Enjoys the big coasters but is just as enthralled by the carnival games, skyrail, and bumper cars. Enjoys a quick stop at the petting zoo as much as any roller coaster. He's the quintessential friend to take to a theme park because he's down for anything and everything.

Time - used to enjoy them more, but now prefers the mellow rides. Jokes it’s because of his changing biochemistry as he ages. Partial to classic Disney-style family rides, esp the ones where he can sit passively and observe the corny scares and funny animatronics (or, better yet, a lazy boat cruise whiling the time away with Malon). Will ride the big baddies if pressured, though he’ll make sure to groan about it. Classic wooden roller coasters give him a headache. Remains straight-faced on all the rides so he looks utterly bored in all the photos, much to Wild’s chagrin and Twilight��s disbelief.

Legend - the most wary when it comes to roller coasters. Finds it hard to place his life in the trust of something he has no control over. Plays it off as nbd to save face, but privately he’s nervous. The only one who can really convince him to ride is Hyrule, maybe Warrior if Legend feels he has something to prove. Insists on being in the middle seat whenever possible. Keeps his eyes closed the entire time. Point blank refuses drop towers or anything that’s too tall. Carnival games remind him of her and he avoids those as well, claiming they’re all a big scam.

Twilight - mostly indifferent but tolerates them. Claims that a quick ride on Epona is more liberating than any roller coaster could be, and it's all he needs in life (commence eye-rolling from Wild). Feels more concerned over securing the loose articles in his pockets than over the coasters themselves. (Wild, after the ride ends: “Uh-oh, Twi, your shadow crystal’s missing!” Twi: “What?!” Wild: “Haha sike, it’s right here.” Twi: 😑) Enjoys browsing through the western-themed shops in the ghost town section of the park. Will go on the rides to appease Wild, but regrets it almost every time after the relentless teasing at the photo booths.

Four - doesn’t really care for them. It doesn’t help that he’s too short for the extreme rides anyways. May or may not have stuffed his shoes before to reach the height limit. More fascinated by the operating tech than the actual ride experience itself. Not above riding the kiddie attractions, where he goads Time, Twilight, or Legend to join him. Is an outright menace at go-karts and bumper cars. Loves cotton candy and insists upon getting some whenever they go.

Okayyyy chappy seven 🤩 Here we goooo 🥳

Lord, Katniss always had nightmares 😭 even before the games, between her father’s death, her mother’s abandonment and the other traumatizing things she saw in her life, my girl never slept peacefully a day in her life 🥺.

She even indicates that she sometimes has nightmares about past hunger games 😭😭😭. Someone protect my smol child. Please. Someone.... Someone? Anyone? No? Okay 🥺

“I bolt up screaming for my father to run as the mine explodes into a million deadly bits of light.” This is such a powerful image and it really does show that Katniss has literally envisioned all the gory details of her father’s death for the last four years. This is so sad 😞

Also though. Katniss really doesn’t talk much about her father’s death after the first book and definitely doesn’t describe nightmares about it. So .... like basically, the games traumatized her so badly that, her father failing to escape the mines as the collapsed in on him, crushing him into the pits of despair, the possibility of rescuing his corpse deemed unimaginable, pales in comparison? Yes I just tried and failed to phrase that long run on sentence the way Katniss phrases her nightmares about her dad dying, yes that was over the top but you know what? So. Is. Katniss.

“Dawn is breaking through the windows” Twilight reference 😬😬😬. I couldn’t stop myself, y’all. Forgive for please.

“The Capitol has a misty, haunted air.” Katniss, you’re from the butthole of Kentucky, the air you’re used to is probably humid as all get out 😓😓💦😅😅

“I must have bitten into the side of my cheek in the night. My tongue probes the ragged flesh and I taste blood.” 😒😒😒😒 this feeling ..... is .... v v v .... distinct .... and .... familiar 😕🙁☹️

“I end up hopping from foot to foot as alternating jets of icy cold and steaming hot water assault me.” Why is this so funny omg 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂😅😅😅😅😅 Katniss is just like pressing buttons like, “Ah! Too cold! 🥶 Ah! Too hot! 🥵 Ah!!!!!” All while jumping like a .... cat 🐱🥁

Lemon foam? 🍋 Whatever. I guess there’s weirder flavors of soap we have today but like where’s the Philosophy flavors that give recipes on the bottles??? Surely they’d survive an apocalypse??? Everyone uses those???

I’m so glad Katniss didn’t forget to moisturize, even as she prepares for a death match 😅😅😅😅 even if it’s just as simple as pressing a single button, why is she even taking the time to press it?

I know, I know. She just wants to make sure her skin is so smooth for the arena that the knives and arrows just slide right off 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Also she’s already picking up on Peeta’s eye for beauty 😅😅😅

But also I love that already in this point of their relationship, Peeta is noticing when she’s being a brat 😭😂😅. “Don’t be so superior.”

“Despite Haymitch's order to appear mediocre, Peeta excels in hand-to-hand combat, and I sweep the edible plants test without blinking an eye.” Lolololol their mentor’s advise went into one ear and right out the other 😂😅🤣.

But also why did the movie make a point in adding an extra scene of Peeta looking weak and the Careers staring at him? That literally took up time and served no purpose at all. 😤😤😤 I’m coming for you, Gary Ross

Awww, everyone but the careers eat alone. But Katniss and Peeta eat together 🥺🥺🥺. It’s like a forced first date 🥳🥳🥳

I like how Katniss says they include bread from every district but she then proceeds to only mention the two districts that later have relevant tributes. 😅😅😅

Lolololol their fake friendship “laugh ... now! Okay, I’ll smile, try to say something interesting”

“Ever since I slammed my door, there's been a chill in the air between us.” Well yeah, you probably hurt his feelings 🥺🥺🥺

Umm, Katniss just casually drops that she was chased by a bear.... how did homegirl live? 😬😳

Peeta knowing Rue’s name and being the one to take notice of her first 🥺🥺🥺. If the games had come down to Katniss, Peeta and Rue, y’all know Everlark would have swallowed the berries and gotten Rue home. 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

“Don't. Don't let's pretend when there's no one around.” "All right, Katniss.” He made a single comment to you, ding dong. He didn’t ask for a goodnight kiss 🙄🙄🙄.

Also anyone ever think of how lonely Peeta’s life must be? He’s not close to his family that we can see, Delly’s his only real friend, after he wins he lives in that huge house all alone... I feel sad now. I did this to myself. 😬😭🥺

6. which one of your muses have you been playing the longest?

The longest consistently is Angeal, who has about 10 years behind him. Who I’ve played the longest off-and-on is Vegeta, however, who... probably has another 5-10 years on him.

10. which muse is the most fun to write for?

Not gonna lie, at this point in my life I think I have the most fun as Genesis, for just plain writing. He’s just so bold and confident and over the top. In some ways, he’s a lot like I was way back before things happened and I can relate. In other ways (the temper, the overinflated ego, the violent streak...) he’s very different, but still fascinating.

Honorable mention to Lazard, too, though. I’ve had such a good time as Laz on Tumblr and that can’t be overstated. He’s just not quite as versatile as Gen can be.

11. is there another muse you’ve been thinking of adding or writing for? who?

Let me preface this with most of these blogs exist, I just am shy and haven’t approached yet. Or have approached and it hasn’t worked out, which doesn’t help with the shy.

Vegeta (DBZ) - there are Goku’s out there, I just haven’t had the guts to approach one. Same for Bulma’s, and his kids. Nothing into Super, because I don’t know Super and therefore don’t count it in my canon but man... I’d love those. OH! And Piccolo would be really neat, too.

Angeal (FF7) - ZACK. Please please please let Angeal find a puppy of his own. I desperately need some catharsis from what a mess canon made of what could have been a great friendship. And Sephiroth, for that matter! (I have been blessed with a Genesis, but I mean, I do welcome more Genesis’ if they want)

Chaos (FF7) - there’s plenty of Vincent’s just not a whole lot who want to deal with Chaos. Which is a shame, because I think I write a... somewhat different Chaos. It could be a good experience.

Genesis (FF7) - an Angeal who fits my Genesis would just... be amazing. Seriously. I would also greatly appreciate a Sephiroth, and would kill for a thread where they work through that ridiculous rivalry and become friends.

Lazard (FF7) - would love, love, love a Rufus, particularly one who would like an “eventual allies” thread because you know that canon divergence is my jam. Also a Heidegger who plays in the pre-CC/BC era.

Reeve/Cait (FF7) - lumping these two together; basically, I’d really like to throw them against each other, a Cait for Reeve and a Reeve for Cait. I think it could really be cool to reach out to a Rufus, or AVALANCHE 2.0 too? idk, it would be neat

Iris (Story of Seasons) - my kingdom for a Mistel! Seriously, even in the dedicated Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons/Stardew Valley rp group I’m in we can’t keep a Mistel. Just let Iris have her baby brother. ;-;

Trent (SOS:FOMT/FOMT/DS/CUTE) - honestly just all the Mineral Town and Forget-Me-Not-Valley peeps. I have so much muse for this man I’m down for crossovers and everything.

Midna (Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess) - absolutely Link, but I’m also intrigued by Zelda, Ganondorf, and Zant

Sheik (Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) - I’d actually really like to toss Sheik up or down the timeline at another incarnation of Zelda. And Link. And any of the Sages. Oh, and Ganondorf.

Ami Mizuno (Sailor Moon) - Zoicite! (Be still my shipper heart) But also, I’d really just like the other Senshi too?

Kunzite (Sailor Moon) - I’ve been blessed with a Minako (though I’m open for more!) but I would also really love Mamoru and the rest of the Shitennou.

Mamoru Chiba (Sailor Moon) - I have been blessed with some lovely Usagi’s but I’d love to see him with his Shitennou, his darling daughter, Helios and the Senshi.

Minako Aino (Sailor Moon) - Kunzite, not just because I happen to ship it but because they’re both the leaders of their Prince(ss)’ inner guard and have a lot in common that would make things Interesting. Also, Usagi and the Senshi of course, and Artemis, who I haven’t seen around at all actually.

HK-47 (Star Wars: KOTOR) - any of the Ebon Hawk crew, either set. I just want to see HK being his ~charming~ self, bonus if it’s with a Jedi or other pacifist calling the shots. Actually, even though I hate what they did with Revan in SWTOR I’d be game for tossing him up the timestream too. Or even further into the movie eras, or crossovers. C’mon, someone needs an assassin droid!

Liana Raine (Star Wars:TOR) - if we’re making a dream list, I’d love a Yuon Par, tbh. And a Hero of Tython. And any of her crew, really.

Revan (Star Wars: KOTOR) - again any of the Ebon Hawk crew (esp Carth or a Bastila that’s better rounded than canon >_>) but really any of them would be amazing. And definitely fast forwarding her to the movie eras. What a difference might have been made if they had known ahead of time how to deal with Sith. Or, for that matter, just if Anakin had had a different sort of mentor. I die for the thought of Revan as a mentor to Anakin or Obi-Wan, Force Ghost, holocron or whatever.

Tharan Cedrax (Star Wars: TOR) - a Jedi Consular (player character) would be amazing, but I’d also love Holiday or the what-if he’d gotten hooked up with a smuggler or bounty hunter crew instead. Seriously.

Duke (Threads of Fate) - I’d really love to see a Belle, because there’s a lot to explore there. Really I’d be grateful for any of the Threads of Fate cast though.

Fancy Mel (Threads of Fate) - other Threads of Fate people aside (and I’d especially love the dolls, fellow Aeons/mages, or Klaus) I’d be really interested on her talking with like, spirits or other magical beings?

I sent an ask about merlin and Arthur for the ask game, I hope that's okay!! I don't know if you only wanted characters from bl shows lol but I had to send them, I l o v e them

hiii nonnie!! oh this is perfectly alright, i adore merlin and arthur like no other! bbc merlin was the first show that ever truly... stuck with me. so here goes! (uhhh, pretty pivotal spoilers for bbc merlin in case it wasn’t obvious!)

merlin:

favorite thing about them:

i just love how GOOD merlin is! he’s one of my absolute favourite characters of all time and the way how he tries to help everyone and anyone he can and uses his magic in order to make people’s lives easier is just... wonderful. he literally gets into escapades every episode because he wants to help one person or another and it’s just so so good and funny, i love him.

least favorite thing about them:

honestly you could not count the amount of times i’ve shaken my fist at the screen and told merlin to stop listening to kilgarrah lmaooo, i feel merlin trusts... too blindly. especially when it comes to destiny and all that lark, i wish he would think for himself and realise that destiny is something you mold. i feel that would have made s4 and s5 WAY more interesting and also... better! considering the entire mordred subplot as well.

favorite line:

god... this series is five seasons long and merlin has the most wonderful quotes. but off the top of my head? i have to pick something from the finale, as i will do for arthur as well. “and i use it for you, arthur. only for you.” like... that continues to tug on my heartstrings, honestly. the way he feels the need to justify himself having magic, and the way that merlin went from this young, innocent, stars-in-his-eyes boy to a wrecked mess in the end, living not for himself, but solely for arthur and the good of camelot. this line showcases that beautifully and how merlin needs to heal first before loving arthur. he has the greatest power in the world... and he uses it all for this one man. bro.

random headcanon:

this is similar to my one for met, but merlin should use his magic and play WAY more pranks on arthur. i’m talking throwing stuff at him when he’s got his back turned but acting all innocent when he turns back. i’m talking stealing more of his food and shrugging his shoulders. i’m talking sparring with arthur in front of all the knights and cheating so he can win. arthur is fuming but he can never say anything because the knights all love merlin more than him and would never believe any sort of accusation against him.

unpopular opinion:

he should have helped morgana. end of. merlin helps everyone he sees, and the fact that he would just brush morgana off like that is a) shitty writing for more drama and b) a complete mischaracterisation. they deserved to be friends who tried to bring magic back to camelot together in their own ways, and considering that they’re literally opposites when it comes to personality... it would have been SO interesting.

song i associate with them:

vanilla twilight by owl city. i have thought of this as a merlin (and merlin x arthur) song for quite a while now and wrote a whole fic based off of it! but yeah, especially the line “i’ll watch the night turn light blue / but it’s not the same without you” fucking GETS me. i always wondered how merlin coped with his grief, considering that arthur became such a pivotal part of his life, and how he realised he needed to live for himself and heal before he came back. some of that is explored in the fic! i wrote it like... almost four years ago, holy shit, so it’s not that good but have at it if you wish!

i adore how arthur always wants to do the right thing, even if it means going against his father in the later seasons. he also just loves the people of his kingdom so much, even saying he’d lay down his life for the people in camelot... which you need to do as king, obviously, but something about his sincerity... and that’s another thing. he’s so sincere in everything he does! i love him :’)

least favorite thing about them:

emotionally constipated arrogant BRAT fhsnfhsn lmaooo i love him, and he gets better with the arrogance and the emotional constipation (not so much on the brat front :/) in the later seasons. i just... adore his character development so much!

favorite line:

okay. i have two off the top of my head although he has some RAW fucking lines as well. “for the love of camelot!” always gets me btw but that’s not a part of this.

so number one, “i couldn’t bear to lose you.” this ties in with the thing about character development i was talking about earlier, because s1 arthur would have never said this to merlin, even if they had a great relationship. and also... that line is just so fucking raw, especially hearing arthur refer to merlin as his friend when arthur doesn’t refer to anyone else as a friend. just... the fact that he’s saying that he literally could not take it if merlin went missing or died, he couldn’t bear the weight of that on his shoulders as he bears everything else on his shoulders... it makes my heart clench every time. and how open and honest that is, how he lays everything out on the table--merlin is a vital part of his life, so much so that he couldn’t picture his life without him.

and secondly: “just hold me.” it doesn’t matter how many times i watch that finale, that line always gets me. how all arthur wants to do in his last moments is be held by merlin, and as said by the showrunners themselves i believe... he died peacefully in the arms of someone who loved him. the way that he gives up and he doesn’t say anything else, not things he needs to do after he dies or messages to give others... but only three words. “just hold me.” all he wants is to be held, and it gets me every time.

arthur is FASCINATED by magic. in a better world, after merlin had told him about his magic, he would have endlessly pestered merlin about this and that and being so impressed with every small feat of magic merlin did. merlin conjures up a light dragon and arthur is all “:D merlin do that again!!!” i love arthur being a little kid and getting to have the childhood he never had, makes me feel warm :’)

unpopular opinion:

i know it wasn’t his fault but i cannot BELIEVE he gave up right then and there during the finale. they were so close :(( i cannot accept that ending man i’m just sad

Hey Mike, hope you don't mind if I jump on the advice train. My family decided to sit down and try out Monster of the Week (it's basically a game based around shows like Buffy, Sailor Moon, etc) and our GM is super new. That's fine! I came into this fully prepared to not backseat GM because I know how daunting it can be to do this for the first time. My issue is kind of all us players?? One of them kept talking out of turn and tried to dictate to the GM, one kept watching other stuff (tbh 1)

uh I think I complained about one person not paying attention? Yeah so two of the players were being super annoying so like…I kept shutting down? I know it made it awkward at the table and I feel bad now, esp since I’m the most exp player at this point and I feel like it was my responsibilty to wrangle? Should I try to step in more next time or say something to the GM and hope he steps in? We all just want to have fun so should I just wait it out and hope it gets better? Thanks!

Not at all, I enjoy helping out with these issues. Establishing a lasting and fulfilling tabletop group can be a challenge, one which I try to support.

In my opinion by not “wrangling” during the session you did the right thing, awkward or not. There are a number of things to consider here. First, like Kenny Rogers said, don’t count your money at the table. Sure, he was talking about poker winnings, but the moral is that unless things are getting seriously heated to the point of lasting damage to friendships (or a physical altercation which, bizarrely, can happen over tabletop gaming) and whatnot, it’s often better to let the session ride out and then afterward have a discussion about how to improve things for next time.

And speaking of improving things for next time, the hard reality is that much of that will be on your GM’s shoulders. As an experienced player and/or GM, you can offer bunches of advice to your GM on how to handle things going forward (heck, that’s kind of what I do in these posts here), but the bottom line is that it’s the GM’s table. They control everything about the game, its rules, its world. They are the kid in the Twilight Zone episode about the cornfield (”It’s a Good Life,” if anyone wants to look it up); they can, at will, destroy characters and end the campaign. That’s the power they wield. But that power is balanced by the fact that the players can choose to leave the table if they want, permanently. The GM is the leader and authority of the group, but if they don’t exercise that power properly, they can find themselves without a group to lead, and without any power or purpose. A well-operated game should be a joint effort; it should not feel like players are competing with the GM.

Player characters aren’t the only ones who level up after adventures. So do GMs. Part of that process is building confidence and learning how to manage the group, and if your GM is inexperienced, it may be a bumpy road. But they have to be willing to lay rules down for the group. A proper GM will not be dictated to. They will work to resolve issues and do so fairly (that part is critical) to the group. But their word is law, and with good reason – there has to be a final arbiter at the table who can unilaterally solve all disputes. That’s critical in games of competition between players, but it’s still vitally important in cooperative games, so no player feels like their ability to contribute or enjoy the game is less than another’s.

My recommendation to you is to talk to the GM in private (to help ensure that in any ensuing conversation there’s no potential for the GM to feel “ganged up” on), express some of your concerns, and offer A) to help in any way you can, and B) to make some suggestions that may help if they want them. Some people would be embarassed in accepting such help or think it makes them look weak, others will be extremely grateful. If the GM is unwilling to make changes and after a few more sessions the situation doesn’t improve and you are still left uncomfortable and dissatisfied, you are certainly within your rights as a player to find a different table to play at. A GM puts a lot of time and effort into running a game, but the player’s time spent is just as important. (Note that I don’t see this as criticism or management-style coaching, but if you do, there are lots of resources available that talk about how to approach that kind of conversation with someone, balance good things and bad things talked about, all that.)

If it were me, based purely on the information you’ve provided and with no other sides to the story having been heard, I would make the following changes:

The GM has the final say over what happens in the world of the game being played, the results of each player’s actions, and control over every NPC character (but not the player characters, who act according to the player whims) – this should be a given, but if someone is trying to “dictate” to the GM, they may not have gotten the memo. If what the GM says does not gel with the rules, you may politely mention so, but if it threatens to disrupt the game, it can be talked about after the session.[This rule is in effect for our group, and works well.]

There are no cell phones, books, televisions, radios or anything else brought to the session that serve as distractions to the game. Players are expected to pay attention. If you are bored during the game, let’s talk about why and fix that, if possible. If you are always going to be bored when it is not your turn in the game, then a tabletop game where people take turns may not be for you. Casual talk relevant to the game is encouraged during everyone’s turns. Is not Buffy the Vampire Slayer filled with witty dialogue during fight scenes? Sailor Moon has had conversations that happened in the middle of transformation sequences. Games like these are meant to be social experiences, not mechanical exercises in dice rolling. Extensive non-game-related discussion that distracts from the game itself is not welcome, though. We’re here to roleplay to at least some extent. If you’re not acting out what Hotaru Tomoe would have thought of the most recent Terminator movie, then maybe not discuss that.[This rule is in effect for our group, with very minor exceptions for fun: notably, players are allowed to occasionally queue up music on their phone for dramatic or humorous impact, such as “Danger Zone” when our fighter gets bold in combat, or a horrible recorder-flute version of “My Heart Will Go On” when our oracle attempted to play a complex musical symphony.]

You should not talk over another player when it is their turn. They have the conch shell, this is their time. Feel free to talk with them (in character, preferably) and if they declare an action that will likely destroy the group, there’s definitely room for some discussion about the wisdom of that. But by having them at the table, there’s a covenant between all players that each will exercise their own agency, and common manners will allow them to do so on their turn. (When the character makes a completely boneheaded play that could end up in a Total Party Kill, it’s up to the GM ultimately on how to interpret it, and a good GM will know whether the table wants the brutal results borne of recklessness, or a little bit of leeway to recover from such.)

As GM, always leave time at the end of a session to ask the players how it went, hopefully as a group (or as individuals if there are some notable hard feelings lingering.) The GM should take these discussions seriously and try to resolve any concerns while simultaneously understanding that while they are effectively God of the universe the players are in, they cannot always solve all the problems of the real world.

📃 - OK SO. without like, spoiling too many plot points, our main character is cara and she lives with her grandmother. her mom is dead and dad is out of the picture. one day theyre getting chased by these people that her grandma knows and cara gets thrown into an alternate realm full of fantasy creatures using her grandmothers amulet. she meets a unicorn named lightfoot and a bunch of other rad people and basically, starts a journey to save that world from the Hunters. the Hunters are an organisation who specifically hate unicorns and want them all dead, led by Beloved, and cara and her friends have to try and stop them from entering the world and wiping them out. its sooo so so good and i highly recommend it cause i have no one to talk to about it please god

✨ - oh boy uh, well. im just gonna like list them out lmao

unicorn chronicles: i loved unicorns as a kid and read it when i was in elementary school, and over the years its remained just as compelling and well written as i remember and like. god the whole concept is so godamn cool and all the subplots that get introduced are fuckign fantastic and like all the different creatures are amazing i literally cant sing its praises enough

howls moving castle: must i have a logical reason? is it not to vicariously live my fantasy of running away to the countryside with a wizard boyfriend, his demon and his apprentice?? for real though, its such a fantastic story with beautiful visuals in the movie and wonderfully compelling prose in the book, and esp in the movie the whole time travel subplot with sophie seeing howl and calcifer in the past and then howl finding her in the future makes me go feral

penumbra: gays in space. need i say more? im a huge slut for gay found family and especially in futuristic space, and im a huge big fan of the lgbt utopia its created. like yeah capitalism sucks but at least im not gonne get misgendered in space starbucks, u kno? all the writing and dialogue is so incredible and the SOUND DESIGN GOD, alex i know u specifically can relate when i say i would kill a man for sophie and her incredible sound design skills, like dude the dance scene in man in glass p2 you can hear every single individual step they take and every swish of junos dress and i jusT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! god its so good, plus the whole the characters help me work through my trauma and repressed anger haha

911: this one is entirely your fault. so obligatory horny on main everyone on that show is so hot i want oliver stark to cradle me gently in his beefy arms oh my god. other than Men, the way it drives home the whole ‘you can’t save everyone, and it will kill you to try, so just focus on what you can do and keep living’ makes me so emo. the way it tackles big bureaucratic issues as well as closer to home interpersonal ones is amazing and i love how it shows people going through and dealing realistically with trauma.

treasure planet: again, who doesnt want to live in Cool Steampunk Space Travel Future? i really really love jims story and his arc, the way he deals with his trauma is uhh very familiar lol and his relationship with silver is like the ideal. the story is just the coolest concept and i love all the wonderful character design and animation, plus the soundtrack SLAPS and everything is beautiful

legend of zelda: ive been associated with this series from a very young age due to my name and as soon as i gave into my fate and looked it up for real i just kinda fell into it lol. i cant really tell you exactly what draws me to it besides ‘wow fun game!’ and ‘god i wish that were me,’ but like the absurd amount of detail thats put into each installment and the creative ways they retell essentially the same/similar story over and over is incredible

guardians of gahoole: so i had the same experience with this and treasure planet which is i remembered ‘oh hey this is a movie that exists and i cant clearly remember watching it, ill look it up :)’ and then it consumed my life for a solid 3 months. firstly this movie is absolutely gorgeous, the animation and framing is fucking stunning and the way they handled owls talking like people as far as the movement of their very inflexible beaks was amazing. it sort of has the same draw for me as warrior cats? secret animal society ft incredibly traumatic experiences and the characters dealing with it. like, the whole concept is just so fuckign wild and it works so well, i rly enjoy this niche genre.

💎 - alright trivia time, so guardians of gahoole is based on a book series and the movie only covers part of the first arc i think idk, BUT theres another series set in the same universe called wolves of the beyond that i devoured when i was younger! i didnt know they were connected for the longest time and when i found out i was :000, i still rly love wolves of the beyond and wanna reread it, as well as read the actual gahoole books. in the howls books, sophie is a redhead! also, markl is named michael and like a fully functioning young adult who ends up marrying one of sophies sisters. treasure planet is, obviously, based off treasure island but its so much better than the book dont bother reading it lol i tried and it was boring. there was plans for a treasure planet sequel that was fully scripted and cast but it was cancelled cause disney sabotaged treasure planet from the start with the shitty release and advertising and tldr we were ROBBED, also amelias concept was much more octopus like and while that wldve been rad im p glad she was switched to a cat for. several reasons lol. uhh i dont have a lot of Fun Facts abt the unicorn chronicles but for the longest time i thought there were only 3 books and then last year i found the fourth book by chance in a kitsch store and nearly had a breakdown i was so happy, like full on i started shaking and crying cause there was so much joy in my body i cldnt contain it.

okay so one of my points in the original incoherent longpost ramble i wrote while fending off the the post-lost boys haze that overtook me after watching it for, i believe, the fifth time, was that i thought the reason it was such a good movie was how quickly it checked the “oh, i like these characters and want to think about them now that the movie is over” box. in that post, i then proceeded to not talk about the thoughts i’ve actually been having about these characters at all, so let’s get down to work and try to fix that, shall we?

okay i was going to just write another impossible to read multiple paragraph long post, but y’know, how about i make things easier on all of us and do this in bullet points. so, in no particular order..... headcanons!

despite her later desire to get out of the gang, star wasn’t tricked or pressured into becoming a vampire like michael was. rather, she had been hanging around them for long enough that she pieced together what they were and asked to join, only coming to realize that it would mean killing other people for her own continued survival and wanting out later on.

in the 6-issue lost boys comic, it’s implied that star has cystic fibrosis, informing her decision to become a vampire. i’m definitely not taking all of that comic into my own personal canon, but i stand by that part--esp. bc it fits with vampirism being her decision, even if it was one she later regretted.

marko is the smallest of the lost boys, but also the most dangerous, even exceeding david. have you seen that part where he’s peeling a man’s head like a fruit? that bitch is BLOODTHIRSTY.

not that he’s exactly an upstanding citizen on his own, but a good deal of the reason that david abuses exercises his control over the other boys is that he knows that they (but marko in particular) are always just about ten minutes and one show of weakness on his end away from staging a coup, and he knows that with anyone else in charge (save maybe dwayne, but dwayne isn’t interested in the leadership role) the group would become too violent and draw too much attention, getting them all killed.

okay now i feel like i’m vilifying marko which. i definitely stand by what i’ve said, but i also don’t think he’s like, pure evil or anything by any means. i like marko!

i feel like i owe marko some nice headcanons now so like: i agree with the general consensus that marko cares for the pigeons in the vampire hotel, to the point where he feeds them and maybe talks to them. he DEFINITELY has named them all, although honestly he can’t tell them apart that well so usually when he sees one and calls it a specific name, he’s fucking with everyone else. loves to make fun of the other guys for not knowing which one is which, though.

one day he looks at a bird flying into the cave and casually announces “hey, vlad’s back,” and after hardly a glance, michael deadpans “vlad? that’s lestat.”

marko goes into existential crisis mode for a week. this is the first time he starts to respect david’s decision to make michael one of them.

he never figures out if michael was just fucking with him the way everyone else or if he could really tell the difference between the pigeons and it haunts him to this day.

ok wow that was a LOT of marko

back to star: she’s trans. you know that part on the boardwalk where she and michael are introducing themselves to one another for the first time, and michael goes “oh, your parents too, huh,” when she says her name is star? i always felt like she didn’t really get what he was saying, even after michael elaborated and told her he meant that her parents were ex-hippies. now i’m totally choosing to read that as her being like, a little offended that he thought someone would only be named star because they were burdened with it by uncool ex-hippie parents, because honestly when she picked it she thought she had the coolest name of all time.

i will not take constructive criticism on that last part because it is already perfect.

on the subject of star, the general consensus i’ve seen in fic and stuff is that she had been a vampire for a few months or maybe a year before the events of the movie, but honestly i’d disagree.

personally, i feel like she’s been there for a lot longer than that--like, have you seen how she dresses? that immediately pinged “free spirit hippie girl” to me, which was kind of out of place, especially considering that everyone else dressed so 80′s. imo, star might have been turned as early as the start of the 70′s--making her the ex-hippie, and not her parents, like michael assumed. this fic here (which is SO good, by the way) explains the way that she was able to last a year with the hunger while michael was already struggling after about a week by having star steal sips from david’s bottle to tide her hunger when she could. that’s basically the way i see it, too, tbh, except over a longer time scale--rather than one year, something around 15.

which means star is nearly as old as michael’s mother. oops.

alright, it’s weird, but i don’t actually think it’s that weird. the way i’m choosing to see vampirism in this universe is that it permanently halts the emotional maturity of the vampire at whatever age they get turned; david and the guys are nearly grown, at ages like, 18-22 or so, but not quite, and they’re never going to grow up and out of their immature mindset. the worst is for laddie, who’s permanently stunted around 8 years old. the others respond to this with a certain degree of pity, but since he doesn’t actually know what he’s missing, it mostly translates to a really rabid older brother/sister instinct. heaven help anyone who tries to pick on that kid--they’re immediately going to face 5 angry vampire dudes and one absolutely enraged vampire chick.

(not to mention that his emotional immaturity means he’s got no real self control over the hunger he feels... if he ever snaps and becomes a full vampire, he’ll be the most dangerous of the group for a plethora of reasons)

on that note, if i were to list the lost boys by most control over their urges to least (or, y’know, least to most actively bloodthirsty), i think it’d be something like this: michael -> david -> star -> dwayne -> marko -> paul -> laddie, with the caveat that while marko is technically better at controlling himself than paul, paul has more moral reservations about the actual act of violent murder, while marko is more inclined to kill for fun.

david being so high on that list may be a point of contention for some but tbh i feel pretty strongly about it

a majority of that call for me comes from the unmade screenplay for the lost boys: the beginning, a prequel to the film set in 1906. before reading that, i honestly had different headcanons entirely, and a lot less sympathy for david, but if you take the script as canon, i think a lot of things change about his characterization.

in the script, the four main lost boys are together (plus one other member named jasper, which is the only crossover name between the lost boys and twilight) as a petty gang before they became vampires. the start of the movie sees them pickpocketing to try and pay for a place to sleep that night, and david seems to luck out early, lifting a wallet with a $100 bill inside.

however, when he realizes the guy has a family, including two babies, and he just took everything the guy has, he gives the wallet back, to marko’s intense dismay.

basically, david starts out a criminal, and he definitely does care about self preservation above most other things, but he still has morals. later, when the movie’s big bad is pressuring him and the others to drink blood and live eternally, he’s the only one who refuses, spitting out the wine when he’s forced to drink it and showing the others that it’s blood. notably, even before that he’s warning his friends that they don’t have to drink it if they didn’t want to (mirroring the way that star told michael he didn’t have to drink of the bottle), protecting not just himself, but also them. he resists becoming a vampire the longest, too; david refuses to join the movie’s villain, even after the other lost boys have been turned, right up until he’s shot by some military men in a scuffle and it’s a matter of life and death. then, his self preservation wins out, but even once he’s been turned, david doesn’t lose who he used to be.

tl; dr: i feel like david is a better person than the events of the movie alone would have you think.

in my opinion, he’s been looking out for his friends from the very beginning, and he’s never stopped doing that. yeah, even before he turned, he was a crook and kind of a burnout, but he had morals. i’m not going to deny that david enjoys being a vampire--enjoys drinking blood, the physical rush, the power over people who pushed him around--not by any means. i just think that comes from an understandable place, given that he was a streetrat who got pushed around a lot in the events of that script; he likes that he’ll never be a victim to assholes with knives who are bigger than he is again.

plus, if you look at the people the lost boys kill over the course of the movie, they’re not exactly innocent victims. there’s the asshole cop who restrained david with a baton to his throat for pretty much just the act of putting his hand on a dude’s face, a jerkass who starts fights on boardwalks, steals comic books, and ignores his girlfriend’s protestations in the car when he’s trying to make out with her, the girlfriend, who stuck by him while all that shit was going down (and was reading one of the stolen comics, if i interpreted that scene correctly--not that this means she necessarily deserved to die, but she wasn’t innocent), and a bunch of assholes calling themselves surf nazis. david and his gang only go after people who have started the fight themselves in some way or another, and i think that david is a big part in keeping it that way--he’s the one who deescalates the tension on the carousel to keep things from an all out bloodbath, after all, and was the one keeping the gang in check since the turn of the century from doing anything too unforgivable for their own gain. that to me says he’s got a pretty good grasp of self control, and he keeps the gang to a level of violence that sustains their bloodlust without being totally gratuitous as much as possible.

re: his placement on the sliding scale of vampiric self control, you might be wondering why i put michael at the absolute top. honestly, it’s not that i think he’s a saint or anything. i just think he was the one member of the gang (jury’s out on laddie, but he’s automatically at the bottom because of his age and inability to control himself) who didn’t make a conscious choice, one way or another, to become a vampire. marko, dwayne, and paul gave into the temptation of the prequel’s big bad. david and star were given the choice between vampirism and death, and chose to live. michael, though--michael gave into peer pressure, but the worst crime he committed was drinking some wine. watching the others kill absolutely fucked him up, but he was able to resist any kind of bloodlust that might have had him joining in the slaughter on the beach that night. when pushed to the absolute wall by david in the ending of the movie (an ending you might have noticed i’m completely ignoring in favor of a full gang inc. laddie, star, and michael for my headcanons lol), his strength was tested against david’s and he won. michael isn’t perfect or superhuman, but he’s making the choices an essentially good, normal human being would make, and when everyone around him for one reason or another chose what they have, he’s got that tiny bit of a head’s up on them that makes all the difference.

tbh tho, i think david was right when he said there was something of a killer in michael. i think on some gruesome level he’s kind of fascinated with the vampirism he’s fallen in with, which makes him more susceptible than, say, sam, or really any of the other emersons, who would rank above him on that scale, were they vampires too.

paul to me is just a fun happy dude. i was endeared to him when he clapped michael on the back after he drank and announced, totally earnestly, “you’re one of us!” i just, you know, liked his eagerness to welcome in a new friend. tbh i think he’s a bit of a ditzy airhead (or, dare i say it, a himbo), but he’s ultimately got his heart in the right place.

i really like dwayne. i like that he’s the quietest of the group (i saw a headcanon that said he didn’t speak that much because he’s got a stutter he’s embarrassed of, which i have absorbed into my canon), but i especially like that he does speak--to laddie, telling him what’s going on when he’s riding on the back of his bike. other than star, i think dwayne’s the most protective of him, and probably the most “maternal” of the guys. he’s under star in the sliding scale thing because to me he doesn’t really have qualms with killing assholes to survive, but at the same time, he’s never really tempted to take more than he needs, like marko is.

i like the idea that dwayne’s really into music, like, ‘can name the artist, album, and song title of any song made since 1890 from the first line’ into music. immortality is a hell of a thing for music buffery.

ok i have sooooooooo much more i want to say, i didn’t even realize i’d put together this many thoughts about this movie but Apparently I Have, holy god, but i need to cut off this post at some point sgfdshgh

one more fun marko one: totally love the hc that he paints, especially that he paints murals on the cave wall. artist boy.....

KH3 First Impression and Complete Thoughts

BACKGROUND: i've played kh1, com, kh2, bbs, 2.8, and a bit of khux. i've watched coded and 3d on yt, so i know the story relatively well. this is an impression of my first playthrough. i did my run on standard mode and watched the secret ending on yt. i mostly did this for story, so this will have my initial impressions based on my run that will not cover extra content like the phone mini games and cooking. my opinions are subjected to change if i ever do any later playthroughs. pls, feel free to disagree w/ me.

!!! WARNING: THERE WILL BE A LOT OF STORY SPOILERS!!!

AUDIO:

Music: utada is queen!!! that opening song!!! also i kept noticing how lit the songs are in each world esp frozen??? and aqua's. worth a replay just for the soundtrack alone.

Voice Acting: everyone sounded great for the most part. sora’s va have certainly improved and sounds less strained. his vanitas voice has suffered significantly though lolololol. i think i read that someone called it a wannabe dark knight voice? the organization sounded incredible, w/ my fav being xemnas, marluxia, and larxene. the disney and pixar va’s are incredible w/ my fav probably being randall in monster’s inc.

some ppl did not get vas like xaldin and laxeaus. and phil in hercules. which were all very disappointing bc in the scenes that they were in, they would just stand around woodenly, and it’s very noticeable.

VISUALS:

mostly a+. environments are beautiful. water and frost textures are amazing!!! you can really feel that waterga and blizzaga. fur textures in monster's inc. could use some work. little details like the sails moving in potc rly make the worlds come alive. this could be a me prob, but environments in certain worlds make it very hard to see map markers, treasure chests, and disney emblems (which are supposed to be hard to find, but still). mostly in tangled.

strangely enough, this is the only game where i prefer in game graphics to cgi. it's already highly expressive and there's something creepy and uncanny about the cgi esp in the final fight. and it's mostly bc sora's thin chapped lips throughout the entire game suddenly becomes full.

DESIGNS:

i don't love everyone's outfit or sora's outfit changes in this game besides toy story. this is something i alrdy knew going in, but i've always felt like the outfits in kh1 and 2 rly suited each of the character's personalities. and this is not just destiny trio but even chars like roxas, the twilight town kids and the hollow bastion crew. the move towards a uniformed look makes no sense to me like is it to unify the key bearers as one force against the organization? i could understand why destiny trio was wearing plaid but why the twilight town kids also? by the end of the game, almost everyone was wearing black and it's just boring to me. like there's a right way to do uniform while retaining characters' individual looks, and that's the wayfinder trio in bbs. in this game, not so much.

an aside, but i'm sort of disappointed in the hud moving to 3d too. the 2d portraits have always been part of kh so it's kinda a bum to see it go away.

i don't love the lvl designs but it might also be due to a narrative and pacing issue that i'll expand on. any case, vertical maps are a challenge to figure out. i don't consider myself bad at directions but there are so many moments, esp in hercules and tangled where i would be like where the heck do i go next (and i have the map) only for me to look up and find a shotlock teleport point (and this isn't so much a thing that heightens the difficulty but a time waster).

lvls and bosses in previous kh games have always been known for their gimmicks and mechanics, but in this game particularly i found it to be more tedious? and this mostly applies to frozen: who the fuck designed frozen? who the fuck thought it's a good lvl design to have sora climb a mountain, get kick off it twice, and climb it again as good lvl design? who?

all the disney bosses started blending together for me bc they're literally all giant monsters and rly easy. i think the mistake here is the fact that the disney worlds are put back to back whereas in kh1/2/bbs you have the interruption of original worlds and an actually playable important parts to the main story, in this game all the important storyline in radiant garden are locked in cutscenes interspersed throughout the game between finishing disney worlds.

a lot of ppl might disagree w this, but i miss the cinematic reaction commands and limit attacks. we still have them but i find them to be on a much smaller scale in the form of drive finishers and situation commands, but i find them to be less imaginative in kh3 in order to be less """"disruptive""" to the gameplay. i've always found cinematics charming in previous games as a way to show sora interacting with his party members during combat. little things like beast putting a hand on sora's shoulder, aladdin leaning on him, or riku bumping his fist have a way of making the friendships he forms feel organic. outside of link commands/ summons, in this game, he........just throws a lot of ppl around or is thrown around?

GAMEPLAY:

already sort of went through parts of it in the previous section, but overall combat was smooth. i love how mobile sora is in this game. the improvement to his running speed and addition of all the mobile skills like dodge roll, super slide, flow motion, blizzard skating, etc. makes combat feel fast paced and juking so easy.

magic is super improved on ever since 2.8 and feels satisfying to use esp bc i feel like ur given a lot more mp now and with the ability to save the last of your mana for cure, it feels like you're not always budgeting your magic.

underwater combat was smoother than i expected.

it's a mistake putting almost all the commands on the triangle button. there's so much options you can do in combat and you'd mean to activate one thing, but then an attraction flow comes out and you just want to die. it gets a bit easier as i went on and got more used to the controls, but in general, i still think it's a mistake to not to have an ability or something to disable certain features like in kh2 fm.

gummy ships continue to be a thing. why. i don’t like how i have to turn the camera myself now ;;;.

i'm not a speedrunner or anything, so i can't say too much else about fighting. the physical combos to me did feel like he was spinning a bit too much tho.

STORY: oh, fucking boy.

i'm not mad, i'm not disappointed, and i'm not even surprised. i already knew that post bbs, kh has already departed far from the franchise i loved as a kid and still today, at least story wise. but let's walk through it.

Disney Worlds: the disney worlds was literally a retelling of their movies. and unlike in kh2 and bbs, where visits to disney worlds were split into two parts, with the first part following the disney story and the second part being heavily tied to the main kh story and thus having original content, the disney worlds in kh3 only get one long visit. and the integration of kh into disney was just done so poorly. remember how kh villains used to kidnap princesses? remember how they used to actually conspire to take disney characters' hearts and turn them dark? remember, you know, when they were still evil and actually interfered with the worlds? in almost every world in kh3, an org member just comes says vague menacing things to sora, calls him stupid, and then leaves. yeah. and oh, maleficent and pete looks for a black box only to not find it, and leaves. AND THEY DON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE FOR THE REST OF THE GAME.

the pixar worlds + bh6 were the only ones with any actual new content and they feel so fresh. i esp loveeeeeeeed toy story omg. the script was so good, funny, and heartwarming. the pixar consultants should have helped kh all the way tbh.

like previous games, there's an attempt for each disney world to thematically tie into the main kh story. in this game, it was as heavy handed as ever, probably even more so.

Original Worlds: onto the meat of kh, the main story was rushed up until the end. you have a slew of disney worlds, then bam, they slam you with all the human bosses and the important story stuff.

the ‘awakening’ of roxas, xion, and ventus were very rushed. you literally have one moment they’re no there then two seconds of white screen and all of a sudden they’re there.

there’s a shit ton of shoehorned character redemption arcs: vexen, demyx, saix, eraqus, xehanort, xemnas, ansem. all were done either offscreen or by some miracle, they reached an epiphany after sora beat his keyblade into their heads.

the only death scene that i actually liked, that a lot of ppl complained about, was vanitas bc yes, although i thought his character had so much potential, it was at least a consistent and sympathetic death. bless him, born a villain die a villain. same with xemnas bc i loved his last speech.

xehanort was a shitty villain through and through. no one understood his motivation; it’s like nomura took a page from thanos’ guide of how to write villains, gave him some stupid ass goal to have a keyblade war to restart the world, and then just have him...get everything he wanted? his estranged friend comes back in ghost form for whatever reason and is just like ok we’re cool man even tho u took my student and indirectly murdered me and then gets taken up to heart heaven, like O K. and like what’s the most frustrating is that it’s implied they’re keeping him as a villain??? bc fucking ymx is like ooohh imma just go back to my own time via time travel. it’s too late for u sora hurdur.

and the younger members of the organization, the ones that we do know were in khux. we don’t get to know how they became nobodies and they don’t get a redemption??? really???

you can tell they tried, TRIED, hard to give everyone closure. and they miserably failed to close plot points. they actually opened more. who the fuck is the unnamed girl in lea and isa’s storyline? why the fuck did you mention her if you were going to play the pronoun game and not name her??? what the fuck was in the black box??? why are they looking for it when no one know what’s in it??? why the fuck was repliku inside of riku the whole fucking time??? why have org members be norted if they can still have agency and choose to betray xehanort??? why the fuck was BOTH sora and riku in different worlds in the secret ending????? ? ? ?

and tho i’m very glad that wayfinder and sea salt trios get their happy ending, the destiny trio had their characters assassinated. kairi was teased to become an independent character of her own and fight alongside sora, only to get shafted to become a damsel in distress, again, literally replaced by xion in one of the last battles, AND referred to as ‘motivation’ for sora by xehanort lol. sora, the guy who’s always going my friends are my power, ONLY grieves about losing kairi, accrediting all of his strength ONLY TO HER. riku, who spent the first game desperately trying to get kairi’s heart back, and who protected her from saix in the second, suddenly doesn’t give a shit about her and is just there as sora’s moral support. it’s so frustrating that nomura has the audacity to say that this series is primarily about friendship and then pull this shit lol. it’s transparent.

CONCLUSION:

i think for me, the quintessential kh trilogy has always been kh1, com, and kh2. as far as i’m concerned, the story should have ended there for destiny trio. and it’s like nomura said, how he feels more sympathetic towards villains now, i think nomura’s ideas have outgrown his main character.

sora’s journey worked in 1, com, and 2 because he had an overarching goal to find kairi and riku and return home. not everyone has to understand heartless vs. nobodies or dark vs. light but at least, anyone can understand the desperation of saving your friends. when that framework is taken away, sora’s goals and motivations become unclear; he’s a kid and has little reason to be caught up in xehanort’s plans, the keyblade war, or the organization’s agendas. and his failure to grow with the increasing complexity of the plot, to investigate for himself the bigger picture or even come into a similar realization of his own darkness/ balance like riku, makes him unfit; he’s a reactionary character instead of an active one. that’s why this game, being experienced from his point of view, felt mostly like a catch up to speed for sora and a set up to nomura’s next big thing instead of a genuine ending. i honestly don’t think nomura knows what to do with him and with kingdom hearts anymore.

kh3 is a game wrapped in nostalgia and promised something bigger than it could fulfill. and aside from better graphics and improved gameplay, the story wasn’t worth the wait.

I think it was so unpleasant because I do not like or do well with revisiting the past esp coming to relationships. ESPECIALLY one so intense. Like we were planning to get married sometime during college and we would look up apartments in the area all the time comparing prices and go back n forth about kids. Like it was a real intense love but it’s over now and I don’t derive pleasure from musing over it I had my time for that and I’ve moved on. Like that’s why I generally can’t be friends after something like that because I just want to move forward and leave everything behind me and like. Never think about it again lol. So I do not appreciate my brain generating twilight zone scenarios centering around her like leave me be demons

most likely is beliax, who i might rename… what was my idea earlier… oh, ferrosia. beliax isn’t that fitting for her lore. ANYWAY she is one of my warcraft ocs! ive talked about her a bit, but. she is a black dragon, who are Designed Evil, but i enjoy kind of… playing with that a bit. her primary deal is that she was hatched after most of the other black dragons were all wiped out after trying to destroy the world. she barely managed to scrape by. she claims she just wants a quiet life to herself, but that… would never actually satisfy her. she has an unending need to power to try and fill some vague void in her from feeling so isolated. she’s a little tragic because she probably would’ve ended up less awful if some other dragons had given her a bit of guidance when she was very young….. but she also throws away any chances to have a stable life with other dragons in a similar situation.

ANYWAY. i am trying to push myself to app her because villain! denny needs villains! i need a villain! and she’s not like laurel, she’s not gonna get immediately routed to a redemption arc. she’s kind of redemption arc proof, actually, she’s like a kung fu panda villain that rejects a redemption arc. one of my main problems is i DON’T know what she’d do exactly. she’s clever and scheming and likes to charm her way into different social circles to try and build up power, but usually ends up getting impatient and throwing them away/destroying what she made. but i don’t know… what she’d do? she could join up with the MLD, or maybe team up with jack, or… i don’t know. but at this point i figure it might be better to “app a villain and then figure it out” than “sit around and don’t app at all”

and then a few others…

ive also considered arvensia (also maybe be renamed). she’s another warcraft oc, also a dragon. she’s a twilight dragon! theyre a bit weird. she’s kind of a foil to beli/ferri, in that arvensia is everything she SAYS she wants. arvensia is also a designed chaotic evil dragon, but she’s chaotic neutral. she really does just want a life of her own and to get away from her kind’s terrible history and reputation. in some versions, the two of them team up, but if i app them both to denny they probably won’t know each other. i think she has a lot of potential to end up hanging out with some denny people, especially some groups on the edge. i just gotta… differentiate her from laurel. she’s the sort who could end up dragged along with heroes, OR working with villains, OR just in some neutral group… she’s not a bad person, but she’s not really a good one either. she’ll take umbrage with like, some things beli does, but she’d look at the mld or jack and just go “who cares, not my problem”. her and beli/ferri are both Young Dragons, both under ten. (so mentally theyre in like... i think i decided beli/ferri is like early twenties, arvensia is like mid twenties)

and for a warcraft CANON, i’ve considered apping jaina. she is….. an old warcraft character. she was introduced in warcraft 3, i think, which came out in 2002. and she’s been pretty involved in lore since then. she’s this like, very powerful human mage who originally really just wanted peace between the horde and alliance and was kind of a symbol for that. but then some intense trauma happened and she got more… vengeful before people talked her down. her most recent stuff has involved reflecting on her past and going back to the homeland that hates her. she is, uh, a warcraft women, which means her writing is all over the place and very ?? at times, but… conceptually a lot of it is compelling. ive hesitated because 1) warcraft characters sometimes feel weird outside their universe, since the world is one of the best parts of that lore 2) ive been waiting to finish the new question stuff, but health issues and… game balance issues have been a block 3) the weird and baffling moral stances this expansion has been taking, esp re: jaina’s old feelings about the horde?? i wont get into that, but. maybe someday. she’d be pretty interesting to involve with other magical characters, and she is pretty op but not likely to involved herself in things unless pushed, which… i feel like could be used somehow, but i’m not sure how.

actually i gotta link it, jaina’s warbringers song is basically the best thing blizzard has put out in years, even without context i feel like it’s worth the watch (warning for… some sytlized corpses, i guess? eh)

also, as you know, emily from until dawn! meeks mentioned maybe apping jess and i thought about if there was anyone i really liked, and… well. i always wanted to like sam, but emily stood out to me more. i think because she’s such an asshole, but in that until dawn cast way of “mean asshole until stuff gets real”. i’ve talked about her potential before so i don’t have much to add. i’m just sitting on this idea while i canon review slowly and see how i feel. it would be fun to have more college-aged kids around denny…

WandaVision: The Sitcom Influences of Episodes 1 and 2

Marvel was never shy about promoting that its first Disney+ series, WandaVision, was inspired by classic TV sitcoms. The show’s trailers revealed its concept of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and The Vision (Paul Bettany) living a classic sitcom lifestyle, laughtrack and all. In the show’s posters, Wanda, Vision, and other characters like Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) are made up of literal TV sets. Producer/Marvel head Kevin Feige, head writer Jac Schaeffer, and director Matt Shakman all went through what they describe as a “sitcom school.”

Still, even with all that forewarning, it’s hard to contain one’s surprise at just how seriously and literal WandaVision takes its sitcom mission. Save for a handful of moments that suggest all is not what it seems, WandaVision’s first two episodes are made up entirely of classic sitcom plots. In one, Wanda and Vis endure many classic sitcom misunderstandings as the latter’s boss makes an unexpected appearance at dinner. In the second, the pair must concoct a magic show for Westview’s kids…all while Vision is basically drunk on chewing gum.

This is a bold new direction for Marvel’s storytelling. The franchise is beginning its future on television by looking to the medium’s past. Given that Feige, Schaeffer, Shakman, and company went to such efforts to create as “sitcom-y” experience as possible, it’s only fair that we delve into the episodes and identify all the sitcoms it’s paying homage to. What follows are our findings.

The Dick Van Dyke Show

The Dick Van Dyke Show is the clearest influence on WandaVision’s first two episodes. The first episode in particular closely resembles the aesthetic of the classic Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore-starring show. Wanda and Vision’s home appears to be at least partially modeled off of the Petrie’s abode. Right inside the entrance of the front door is a small landing leading to a lowered living room floor. Van Dyke would step off that landing and theatrically pratfall over an Ottoman in the show’s opener.

Even Wanda and Vision’s kitchen appears to be modeled after the Petrie’s, with ample counter space and shuttered windows leading out into the living room. This modeling of the Van Dyke Show home for WandaVision’s main dwelling was clearly no accident. In fact, as part of their aforementioned “sitcom school” the producers had lunch with the still sprightly and energetic 95-year-old Van Dyke to discuss the finer points of sitcoms.

“That remains one of the great afternoons of my life,” Shakman told reporters about meeting the comedy legend. “We asked him, ‘What was the sort of governing principle behind the Dick Van Dyke Show? Why did it work so well?’ And he said if it couldn’t happen in real life, it can’t happen on the show. If you’re drawing something that’s grounded and it’s real and it’s resonating with everyone’s experience at home, you can do crazy things.”

Imagine Shakman’s heart dropping during the first part of Van Dyke’s quote, realizing that he was about to make a sitcom about a magic-user and her android boyfriend. But it’s the second part of Van Dyke’s message that matters. Viewers can accept pratfalls over Ottomans or even tea saucers flying via ESP as long as the characters feel grounded.

WandaVision is dealing with fantastical circumstances to begin with…and that’s before little “glitches” in its characters’ reality suggest that none of this is real. The importance of opening with a setting as grounded and recognizable as The Dick Van Dyke Show therefore cannot be overstated.

I Love Lucy

While The Dick Van Dyke Show makes up most of episode 1 and 2’s settings and vibes, there is also a little bit of I Love Lucy sprinkled in there. And that’s partially because there’s almost always a little bit of I Love Lucy sprinkled into every sitcom.

I Love Lucy is one of the most influential shows of all time. Lucille Ball starred as a fictionalized version of herself, Lucy Ricardo, a young middle-class housewife living in New York City with her husband Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz). Episode 1’s opening theme song (written by EGOT winners Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez) mentions that Wanda and Vision are relocating from the city to a smaller town, so the setting is not similar, but it’s still hard for the show to avoid Lucy comparisons all the same.

In speaking to reporters Olsen mentioned Lucy as an “accidental” inspiration for her performance, saying: “It was like an amalgamation of Mary Tyler Moore and Elizabeth Montgomery (of Bewitched). I think I accidentally threw in some Lucy in the ‘70s just because there was so much physical comedy.”

Feige also invoked I Love Lucy when talking about styling the black and white episodes.

“We often talked about that when something shifted from a Dick Van Dyke or an I Love Lucy style into something that was outside of that, that it was going into kind of a Twilight Zone,” Feige said. “You know, we were thinking about what were the period shows that addressed, you know, the odd and the strange, and how could we embrace that?”

One tangible aspect in which WandaVision pays homage to I Love Lucy is in Wanda and Vision’s separate twin beds at the beginning of the second episode. In the 1930s through the 1950s, TV characters, married or otherwise, almost never shared the same marital bed. The Hays Code explicitly mentioned “Man and woman in bed together” as an image to avoid. As the most popular sitcom of the time, I Love Lucy became something of a hallmark of this strange rule. It was downright jarring to see a couple so clearly close as Lucy and Ricky spending their nights in separate twin beds.

Thankfully, shortly into the episode Wanda uses her magic to conjoin her and Vision’s beds. And that gives her something in common with another TV witch…

Bewitched

Funnily enough, the first live-action TV couple (who weren’t already married in real life) to share a bed were Darrin and Samantha Stephens on Bewitched. And it’s from that show that WandaVision episode 2 borrows much of its format.

The opening credits for WandaVision episode two are highly, highly similar to Bewitched’s animated opener. (There’s also some I Dream of Jeannie influence, which makes sense as that show basically copied Bewitched.)

The general conceit of the episode is right out of a Bewitched episode as well. When her husband (Vision in WandaVision and Darrin Stephens on Bewitched) encounters some trouble, our witch protagonist (Wanda and Samantha Stephens) uses her magic to help him out. It’s a bit of an ironic twist, however, that Wanda uses her magic to make Vision’s own “magic” seem like simple sleight of hand trickery.

Though Bewitched makes up most of the inspiration of WandaVision’s second episode, its influence can also be felt in episode 1. When Wanda uses her powers to make recipe cards float all around her, the show borrows a simple string special effect from Bewitched.

“Our special effects team usually blows things up, sets things on fire, creates wind, creates smoke – (now) these guys became like puppeteers of things floating in the sky and dealing with magnets,” Olsen told reporters. “It was just so incredible to watch them adapt to the specific ways of creating these practical effects by doing the research of what they did on Bewitched.”

Bewitched also aired its first 74 episodes in black and white before switching to color for its next 180. WandaVision’s transition to color at episode’s end could be an homage to that…or it could just be setting up all the other exciting sitcom references to come.

twilight by stephanie meyer because i love trashy vampire romance novels. kidding! but also not kidding, because one of my favorite series’ is the house of night one, by pc and kristen cast, and it's also abt vampires but one attending a school and i loVE it. but no. overall, my fave YA book,, is gone, by michael grant, bc it kicks off the whole series and i would do absolutely anything for any of the characters he created. i even met him at his dublin book signing and it was!! the happiest day of my life!!
