#The Water Outlaws #aroaessidhe 2023 reads #i loved this a lot!! #I will say I think it has a few flaws: if I hadn't read audio it probably would have been a bit slow/weirdly paced #and i think there's too many characters that aren't developed fully enough #(maybe a result of being a retelling of something that had many characters ) #like there's setup for some amazing interesting relationships but they only get a couple scenes together? #there's this fight scene with the commander and a bit after it that made me insane then they didn't really interact after that.. #and lu junyi's storyline was a bit unconnected... #BUT ALSO the characters are all really cool and i can like. imagine in the gaps u know #LU DA my beloved himbo flower monk....i love her....... #also!!!! #no romance #there’s some discussion of a past ones…and maybe it was implying things between certain characters but I didn’t read it obviously that way #anyway i gave it five stars #its kinda one of those books where im like. #actually i would've liked more of a lot of things BUT also the baseline of what is here is already at a rly high level of what i like. so.

God this is such a. Niche lore post but like I need to post about it so bad

So in challenger deep, most merfolk do lay eggs like (most) fish do, save for the mammalian types. But in general they do come from Egg™ and they do go through larval stage to juvie stage to adult stage. And some of the lore I had been workshopping is that eggs are kept in special lil enclosures separate from the ocean itself until they hatch, some are even communal (like a daycare, if you will). I don't have a whole lot of worldbuilding on it yet but its a thing

And recently.. I have been binging a youtuber's videos and she has a lot of pet fish and comments on a lot of fishkeeping practice etc. And in one of the videos.... WAS a little device you put fish eggs/embryos in. It's an egg tumbler. It tumbles the eggs. Because if they lay still for long periods of time fungi can grow over them and they can die from that so... they literally put the babies on the fucking Trampoline Contraption for however long it takes them to hatch to keep them alive and healthy. And I cant stop fucking thinking about it also being a thing in CD like oh my god getting put in the pear wiggler is fucking real but its for your own GOOD

wait actually the star imagery and p5 kinda goes hard even if it's not as obvious as, say, p3 and its moon imagery. as a resident sun/moon/stars/earth imagery h03 this is deeply important to me

from what i've gathered with persona 5 and its stars:

-Hoshi to Bokura to, (with the stars and us) is the final theme of vanilla p5, which sings of stars, obviously. It's essentially about joker and the PT moving on with their past pain into the next part of their lives.

Interestingly, Our Light in p5r continues the "stars representing a bright, youthful, hopeful future" theming with the lyrics:

That pain will guide me / Towards the stars of the sky that shine above me even when it's essentially a grief song lol.

-Persona 5's dancing spinoff titled "Dancing Star Night"

-P5 UI has these flashy black and white stars everywhere when you know where to look. actually theres nowhere else to look. theyre pretty out there.

so far this is all pretty neat! again, i bring it up because you wouldnt think of stars when talking about persona 5. but i feel the devs definitely intended this.

these next ones are more speculatory but;

-Fallen angels like Lucifer or even satan are likened to falling stars. Fitting that the protagonist's initial persona resembles a demon, not to mention his final one outright being satan. Fallen stars are oft deemed defects but they're stars nontheless... in this way i think Joker's meant to be that very fallen star cast away from heaven?

-persona 3 is obviously moon-themed, embedded into its narrative and gameplay as it is, and it could be argued that the game following it is sun-themed too. persona 4, with its flashy yellows fits with the sun and its glory. persona 5 being star, kind of evokes the feeling of being the hopeful child brother of the two? the game was meant to be a love letter that both refreshed the formula and calling back to the series as a whole, for old and new fans alike... that leaves the earth, which pairs with star well. earth's parallel can also be heaven/sky, and p5's later parts kinda hammering down the "taking back the heavens from false gods!" narrative imagery (especially in vanilla's final boss. u be fighting angels as minibosses cmon now) it kinda tracks! so now star-heaven-sky are all synonymous to me. either way it all fits.

this all leads me to think p6 could have earth imagery, actually. if it's also going to be color-themed as green as fans are speculating, that's fitting!

maybe the social commentary this time would be "reconnecting with earth/nature" as the whole world's kinda experienced/experiencing that since the pandemic..? persona games being a product of the technological advancements of their time can also tie into that, since people depend on their devices more than ever, so maybe nature's (forceful) reclaiming can be an intriguing concept for them to explore... not that we'll know anytime soon!

its so interesting to me how tezukas art is just... like very ageless to me. in the way of yeah ofc u can TELL its his you can tell his drawing eras and how it progresses if you study it enough but you cant really like. determinedly say yeah its from this certain era. like i feel it truly is just in a league of its own (altho i do need to read more manga from the 60s and earlier lol so i might just be talking out of my ass here). im reading something that you can TELL is from the 90s-00s by art alone alongside it and idk. its just very interesting how different eras have different art trademarks
